As nonprofits generate more revenue through business-like activities, the question is no longer theoretical: should some of that income be taxed?In this eye-opening conversation, Scott Hodge of Arnold Ventures joins The Nonprofit Show to examine how nonprofit revenue models have evolved—and where the current tax framework may no longer align with reality.The nonprofit sector now represents $3.6 trillion in total revenue, with approximately $2.8 trillion coming from business-related activities. Yet much of this income remains untaxed. As Scott explains, “We have this enormous… gap in the tax code so that these businesses that are now nonprofits are not paying any tax on their business income.”This raises real operational and strategic questions for nonprofit leaders. In these roles, he oversaw multi-site global manufacturing networks, large-scale capacity expansions, and complex technology platforms across oral solid dose, biologics, and advanced delivery modalities.   As Chief Executive Officer, Alessandro led Catalent through the COVID-19 pandemic, during which the company played a critical role in the global response by supporting vaccine and therapeutic manufacturing at unprecedented scale. More recently, he has overseen Catalent's transition to private ownership following its $16.5 billion acquisition by Novo Holdings, positioning the company for long-term investment and growth as a privately held global CDMO.   Prior to joining Catalent, Mr. Maselli held a range of operational and business leadership roles at ABB Group, Alstom, and SGS, gaining extensive experience in industrial automation, engineering, and large-scale manufacturing operations. He began his career as an automation systems engineer in the food industry. In addition to his executive role, Alessandro serves on the Board of Directors of Graphic Packaging Holding Company, to which he was appointed in May 2025. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in electronic engineering from the University of Rome and is a native of Italy.   Franco Negron is the Chief Executive Officer of Simtra BioPharma Solutions, a leading sterile injectable contract development and manufacturing organization formed following the divestiture of Baxter International's BioPharma Solutions business. He was appointed CEO in 2023 by Advent International and Warburg Pincus to lead the business as an independent, private-equity-backed CDMO focused on clinical-to-commercial parenteral manufacturing. Franco is an industry veteran with nearly 30 years of pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical experience, bringing deep expertise across sterile manufacturing, commercial operations, and global supply chain leadership. Andria Parks, Head of Commercial Operations at First Ascent Biomedical, highlights the value of using a biopsy to grow cancer cells in a lab to determine which drugs are most likely to be effective against a specific cancer. This functional medicine approach combines lab data, genomic data, and AI to produce a report that identifies which drugs might work and which are unlikely to be effective for that individual patient. This perspective is particularly effective for rare cancers, which often lack established treatment guidelines.  Andria explains, "First Ascent Biomedical is a functional precision medicine company. And what that means is we've put together three very unique and advanced technologies to produce something very specific, and I'll explain what that means. What we do is we take a fresh biopsy from a patient, and we will grow those cells in our lab in a medium very similar to the human body. We will test or validate more than 150 drugs and drug combinations on those cells to see what works on those cells and what kills them. We will combine that with a patient's genomic information using our advanced AI. And then a report is produced that stack ranks the drugs that work, but most importantly, the drugs that don't work for that patient's cancer. And when a physician sees that report, they know exactly what to start with before initiating treatment. So everything we do is outside the body."   "If you are testing 150 drugs and combinations on your unique cancer cells, you will be able to know what works and doesn't ahead of time. Usually, most patients who don't follow this approach go through a standard-of-care protocol. And what that means is these protocols or ways of treating patients are based on hundreds of thousands of patients that may look like you and me, but are not you and me. So it's based on evidence of many, many, many patients with a similar type of profile. But the uniqueness of getting a drug to work for your specific cancers is based on your unique cells. So that's what makes a big difference. Shoutout to Alison for the killer slides.​ What You'll Learn in This Episode Ken's new grandpa status (the little guy is 7 months old—congrats!) and why it's the “next step in life” that keeps him energized for trade tech.​ The #1 mistake companies make with GTM software Data cleanup first: Don't dump junk into GTM. Scrub inactive vendors, obsolete parts, invalid HS codes (like 111111 or all zeros). Clean it like you're hosting the in-laws—no mess allowed. Why: GTM amplifies what you give it. Bad data in = faster mistakes out.​ Avoid the “Big Bang” implementation trap Don't try to do everything at once (denied party screening + classification + FTA rules + solicitation). Start small: Classification (builds the foundation—parts, HS codes, values). Denied party screening (uses your vendor/part data). FTA analysis (relies on classification/HS from step 1). Why: Master data dependencies mean you build once and reuse everywhere.​ Processes over pixels GTM won't fix broken workflows. Map your processes before going live. If your current setup is emailing Excel files between systems, you're not automating—you're digitizing chaos. True automation: ERP ↔ GTM via SFTP, APIs, XML—no human hands on keyboards. Reduces errors, speeds everything up.​ Who owns what after go‑live MIC US (GTM provider): Manages the software backend—reg updates, HS databases, platform maintenance. Your team: Owns the process (classification, entry creation, decision‑making). Someone still reviews outputs for accuracy. No “managed services” from MIC—GTM is a tool, not a full‑service outsource.​ Testing: where most implementations fail Allocate real time and resources to testing—don't rush it. Test end‑to‑end: data flow, workflows, edge cases. Why: Skipped or rushed testing = live problems that cost more to fix later.​ “If your systems are emailing Excel files to each other, you're not automating” Ken's golden rule: Hands‑off data flow (ERP → GTM) eliminates errors. In 2009, Fellner transitioned into commercialisation consulting, partnering with large pharmaceutical companies on market access and launch strategy. She joined MedImmune, part of AstraZeneca, in 2012 as manager of access services operations, marking her move into the biopharmaceutical industry. In 2017, Fellner advanced into AstraZeneca's commercial organisation, serving as associate director of consumer marketing for respiratory biologics and later as global marketing director for the same franchise. In 2022, she relocated to Vienna and assumed the role of business unit director for respiratory, immunology, and vaccines, with responsibility for strategy, performance, and commercial leadership. Fellner joined AOP Health in 2025, where she oversees the company's global therapeutic areas. In this role, she leads lifecycle strategy development and drives international brand integration across functions and markets to accelerate sustainable portfolio growth. Her career started in the underwriting side at a carrier and after 4 years moved to the agency side. Prior to joining Travelers, Kathy retired after 28 years as a partner/owner from Propel Insurance where she held the position of Vice President of Marketing and Commercial Operations located in the Pacific Northwest. Kathy developed a passion for the industry and feels it is important to give back to the industry by teaching. She has been a teacher in the Junior Achievement program and enjoyed working with students as they learned about community involvement. She was a Human Frontiers/Howard Hughes postdoctoral fellow at the Skirball Institute of Biomolecular Medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center, where her research focused on cytoplasmic determinants and cell signaling pathways involved in the migration, establishment and maintenance of germ line stem cells in Drosophila melanogaster. Prior to this, Dr. Forbes was a research fellow at Duke University and at the Carnegie Institute at Johns Hopkins University where she studied the role of the hedgehog gene and its signaling pathway in the Drosophila embryo and adult. Dr. Forbes received her Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from Oxford University, UK and attained a double first degree in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University, UK. Dr. Forbes serves on the Board of Directors of MeiraGTx, and as a Trustee and Director of the Selfridges Group Foundation, the European arm of the Weston Brain Institute, a charity supporting research into neurodegenerative diseases with the aim of speeding the time to the development of disease modifying treatments for these currently intractable diseases, particularly Alzheimer's.
