This week I had the pleasure of speaking with Lioba Oerter, Director of Expert Services, 3E Expert Service Processing Centre (ESPC), and Karin F. Baron, Director of Hazard Communication and International Registration Strategy at B&C and our consulting affiliate, The Acta Group, about the significant changes to product classification, labeling, and packaging (CLP) in the European Union (EU). Lioba and I shared a podium recently and found we also have a shared belief that these forthcoming CLP changes will have a profound commercial impact on product classification, labeling, and packaging globally and that with everything going on in the world these days, this impact may be a bit underappreciated. Karin and I spoke about these matters last year, and I welcomed an opportunity to consider them again with Karin and Lioba in light of the new CLP developments as of December 2024. Karin, Lioba, and I discuss the CLP changes, including those recently made, why they came to be, what they mean for commercial operations, and conclude with some tips on staying ahead of this coming storm. OxygenCare, a leading provider of life-saving medical equipment and solutions, announces a new partnership with Defibtech, a manufacturer of life-saving resuscitation devices, to improve the availability of rescue-ready defibrillators in Ireland which could save lives. Defibtech, a long-standing American manufacturer in medical technology, is dedicated to crafting dependable, affordable, and user-friendly products, empowering communities globally to respond to sudden cardiac arrest. Joseph Mullally, Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations, Defibtech, said: "Partnering with an industry leader like OxygenCare was a natural fit for Defibtech. We have a shared mission to provide emergency medical technology and spread awareness which can save lives. We recognise that the true impact of our work lies not only in the accessibility of our products but also through knowledge and skills". Cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of death in Ireland, with at least 9,000 deaths and 25,000 hospital admissions each year according to the HSE. The availability of functional defibrillators is crucial, and inadequate maintenance has rendered many devices non-functional, exacerbating the issue. Conrad Wynne, Senior Product Specialist, Resuscitation, OxygenCare, said: "This partnership with Defibtech not only enhances our critical care offering but enables us to help ensure that AEDs across Ireland are both available and functional when people need them. Emergency situations arise all the time and every second counts in these situations, so having operational, life-saving technology is crucial. As a leading provider of emergency and resuscitation equipment, OxygenCare has extensive experience and a long-standing reputation in the Irish healthcare industry. The addition of Defibtech's Lifeline AED (automated external defibrillators) greatly enhances its existing portfolio. Joseph Mullally added: "By combining our defibrillator products with OxygenCare's support and service, we're equipping organisations and communities across Ireland with the tools, knowledge and confidence to act decisively in the face of cardiac emergencies. Together, we are on a journey to reach this goal, saving lives and safeguarding communities, one heartbeat at a time." See more stories here.

They also delve into crucial factors influencing decision-making for the future, with a particular emphasis on the formidable challenge of navigating data considerations. Matt introduces a compelling and reflective concept, emphasizing that decisions must be "Fit for Purpose.” That is sound learning, no matter the size of your organization.    IN THIS EPISODE: [2:32] Matt discusses the key differences between working for large pharmaceutical companies and his current position [3:41] Matt explains his vision for setting up the commercial function [5:50] Matt discusses how he decides what priorities are needed for Milestone to benefit the company  [8:05] Matt shares what components he wants to implement to build a foundation for data-driven commercialization, and he is developing a data governance system [13:16] Matt speaks to the technologies and capabilities that they are planning for the future and how he is putting his team together  [17:27]  Matt shares what he has learned in the process of setting up the commercial function KEY TAKEAWAYS In a smaller company, when you don't have the resources of a large entity, you have to determine the must-haves and what things would be nice to have. You need to be able to make adjustments quickly for growing or scaling back.  Connecting with stakeholders, department heads, and other management figures in a smaller organization is more straightforward. The absence of a sprawling corporate structure, as seen in larger companies, facilitates smoother and faster communication.   A company can make a big mistake by spending resources on collecting data, and then they find out it needs to be more accurate data. The perfect time to make data governance decisions is when you are starting out before you start collecting massive amounts of data you won't ever use.    BIOGRAPHY:  Matt Bachman brings over 20 years of experience in the insights and analytics arena at both large pharma and small biotech companies. During that time, he has worked closely with brand teams to commercialize numerous drugs in multiple therapeutic areas. These include drugs for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular drugs that were first in class and novel therapies, as well as the ones that had little clinical differentiation, which presents its own set of challenges. From a customer standpoint, he has worked on commercializing drugs that targeted specialists and also the ones that targeted broad-based PCPs. He currently leads the commercial operations for Milestone Pharmaceuticals, a small biotech company launching a novel treatment for patients with PSVT. Before Milestone, Matt worked for large companies like GSK and BMS. Today on The Business of Wellness Podcast: Justin Levy is the Executive Director of Conscious Alliance, a Colorado-based hunger relief organization, and Randy Gilbride is the VP Commercial Operations at Sunrise Strategic Partners. This summer, Conscious Alliance announced that Sunrise Partners will join their family of annual donors, starting with a meal distribution event last month to support children facing food insecurity as the school year came to a close. Sunrise contributed financially to the event, providing 10,000 meals to local families in need. In addition to their monetary donation, Sunrise employees will donate 10 hours of their time individually to volunteer at Conscious Alliance's national distribution center and headquarters in Broomfield, CO, for a total of 100 hours annually. I wanted to learn more about this unique partnership in among for-profit and not-for-profit organizations in the food space, so Justin and Randy join me for a candid conversation about it all.   We discuss: Their unique individual backgrounds and experiences working in different areas of the food industry; why this partnership makes sense at this moment, and how growth capital investment can help move the needle forward in ending hunger in the U.S.; why collaboration is so important;  what makes for a great collaborator across industries; how these organizations will continue to work together to support their individual missions of providing nutritious meals for people who need it, and what's next for each of their respective organizations. If you're interested in food investment, early stage investing, behind-the-scenes in non-profit work, the work that goes into food venture capital investing, and what a venture capitalist looks for before investing in a CPG food and beverage company, this episode is for you.  —
