We all know about the knife thrower in the circus or sideshow. There's the beautiful woman, blindfolded, standing and strapped to a spinning wheel while the confident, all knowing man, who's also blindfolded, throws those long, sharp, penetrating knives at her. Every time after each performance she walks away unharmed. Although both participants are applauded, it's the knife thrower who is seen as the hero and star of the show. Everyone stands in awe of his prowess, timing and skills. The woman, on the other hand, realizes that in order for the man to have success she has to have complete trust in his skills as a knife thrower and of course she has to remain perfectly still and in place as he has positioned her. Let me be honest with each of you, as great as the skills of a knife thrower might be, no matter how many years he's been practicing this feat, there is no way I'd say yes to taking the place of the woman on the wheel. But what if someone offered me a tax free $10,000,000 dollars? There is no amount of money that someone could offer me to stand there while he's blindfolded and allow him to throw knives my way. My choice would still be a sound, definite, undeniable no. It would be my option. Would I miss the opportunity of a lifetime? Quite possibly. Would the time come that I would regret it? Most probably. But with it being my option and even with the knowledge of what I might miss I would still say no. And so it is with the choice that our heavenly Father gives us. We have the option to say no when given the choice of whether or not we're willing to trust Him implicitly with our eyes closed, not His. Blind trust is what we need when it comes to saying yes to God. It needs to be a matter of knowing that in spite of what we can or cannot see, we must believe that without a doubt He can't miss when it comes to doing what's best for us. Episode 224: The letter "C" could be the difference between you crushing your New Year's resolutions. You have a choice! Welcome to the new year! I mean the New You! Have you thought about what you want more of in 2024? According to a survey conducted by Forbes, some of the most common resolutions for 2024 include: Enhancing finances (38.2%) Shedding weight (33.8%) Refining dietary habits (31.6%) Improving fitness (48%) Improving mental health (36%) Losing weight (34%) Improving diet (32%) Some of those may be on your list. There is a strategy for crushing your goals in the new year. The French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre noted that "Life is C between B and D," meaning that the life we live is the choices we make between the "B" of birth and the "D" of death. The simplicity of that statement is relevant to each of us in our journey of life. The Choice is yours, regardless of your circumstances. You can choose to make excuses or give up the power that you know you can live a life without barriers. But remember that choosing is active, and it is time for you to make better choices today. I have found that there is another "C" you need in addition to Choice if you want to resolve something in the new year. That word is Commit! Many of you want to do something that will improve your life and business. Something you know you should do. But you don't do it because you let other things get in your way. You break that promise to yourself over and over. So, what can you do to achieve those Resolutions in the new year and get more out of 2024? You schedule time to think about what and who is holding you back. What do you want more of in your life? You write it down because when you write it down, it becomes more of a commitment or promise to you. For some, you may want to share the new choices you plan to make in 2024 with family, friends, or socially to hold you more accountable. If you prefer to keep that promise to yourself, write down those choices. I can help you find a great way to do this. I learned this from Jim Kwik, who wrote the book Limitless, by committing yourself to yourself. Ask yourself the following questions to get you started: I ( Fill in the blank) commit to doing (Insert) each day until I have reached my goal. I am choosing to stay curious, yes, another "C" word. I love learning new things and new ways to do things differently, learning from others who have achieved. I love listening to podcasts and audiobooks and sharing what I know with others. I commit to focusing by forgetting my prior understanding, distractions, and limiting beliefs of what is possible. We all are limitless! We can no longer let others influence how we live our lives. Who is holding you back? Step past those thoughts and opinions and keep moving toward your dreams. Again, it's your Choice. I commit to being active in the process ( Action required). It takes you to be actively engaged in your choices. We can no longer Hope and Wish for them. We must move toward them and take the necessary steps to reach them. I commit to managing my state of being, checking my energy levels, and adjusting. Making new choices about your life and business requires energy. Some of us stop before we start because we get mentally drained. You can choose to be engaged in a better life or not. Even if I fall short, I commit to giving myself grace, getting back up, and doing my best. Your Choice! Remember, our lives are between B and D. Birth and Death! We will fall short, but give yourself credit for taking action to improve your life. A life of adventure, changes, connection, and fulfillment. A life for making better choices. So I encourage you to choose wisely for you! There are a lot of C's you can choose. Challenge, Change, Compete, Courage, Commit. I wish you more and better choices. Choose Something! What's the hardest thing you've ever done? Climbing Mt. Everest? Swimming the English Channel? Raising a teenager? Ok. I haven't done the first two, but I survived raising a teenager and I think it ranks right up there near the top of the list of hardest things. I actually found a website the other day that listed someone else's ideas of the hardest things to do in life. None of the ones I mentioned were on their list, but there were some that hit home, particularly as I was thinking about this podcast topic. One of them was giving up comfort, getting out of your comfort zone. Sharing your music - playing in front of other people - is out of the comfort zone for most of us. When we play for others we are making ourselves vulnerable. It isn't just about playing well, although that always helps. It's also about feeling, however wrongly, that we are being judged, and that we may be found unworthy. It's about revealing our artistic side, something we often feel is private and personal. No matter how confident we are in other areas of our lives, sharing our music can be extremely hard. I've been playing the harp in public for over 50 years and although I can tell you it gets easier over time, I still face some of the same doubts and fears I had when I started. I've had plenty of good performances, but I've plenty that were more the crash-and-burn type. Today's episode is devoted to making playing for others easier for you. One of the benefits of my own performing experiences, particularly the crash-and-burn ones, is that I have had to look at the right way to prepare so that I can be reasonably confident that my performance will meet my expectations. And I have discovered that the best preparation has two parts - preparing your music properly (which isn't the type of practice you're doing now, I can almost guarantee) and preparing yourself. This is a big topic, much bigger than a single podcast episode. But because we are coming into a season with lots of extra musical performances, I thought it was important to share the broad outline with you so that if you decide to share your music this holiday season, you have the information you need to prepare well. Now a quick note for everyone who is in the My Harp Mastery membership.
