This one's personal. In 2019, I made a decision I thought would help my dog Fitz—something I believed would make his reactivity better. But instead, it changed both of our lives in ways I never saw coming. This episode isn't about chaos. It's about what came after—the guilt, the overwhelm, and the quiet belief that I had somehow failed my dog. That's where this podcast was born.Because I couldn't find a judgment-free space when I needed one—so I created it.You'll hear:The decision I made for Fitz that didn't go the way I hopedHow the storm shaped the mission behind Straight Up Dog TalkWhy solo episodes like this exist—and who they're here forA reminder that you're not alone, no matter where you are in the processIf you're feeling discouraged, tired, or unsure of what's next… this space is for you. You're not failing. You get to be a fly on the wall inside the LIVE q & a coaching call inside The Collective, my monthly home decorating membership. Today, you'll hear from: Nicole: who has slowly been transforming her home over the past 7 months. She wonders about art placement in her living room and hanging a plant above her ADORABLE console. Michal: who wonders if a mirror she's been eyeing at Ballard Design (that's finally on sale) fits within her personal design style (aka aesthetic) and, if so, how to make it work in her foyer. Side note: her personal style is so sweet. We named it: southern modern! Rosie: who is remodeling her family's cabin for future generations to enjoy. She's in the fun, but often confusing stage of making ALL THE DECISIONS. Fun when you have clarity, but overwhelming if you don't! What is the secret to consistently delivering high-quality work, day in and day out...Recently, I was chatting with my neighbours who run a bespoke interior design and manufacturing business. They make truly stunning, customised pieces for the upper market. It's easy to think their success hinges on exceptional craftsmanship, which is surely part of it.But what really keeps their business running smoothly is something far more fundamental. In my conversation with them, we agreed that most of it comes down to things like having the right supplies available, making sure everything in its place so it can be found quickly, that tools in tip-top shape, and even something as simple as having lunch prepared so you don't have to worry about it.These basic and somewhat "boring" conditions, are what enable them to deliver consistently high-quality work. Without them, production would be a slog, quality would be all over the map, and let's face it, they probably wouldn't be in business for very long.We often take these kinds of conditions for granted. When things are running like a well-oiled machine, we assume that's just how it's supposed to be.But you, as a service design professional, know that the conditions for delivering your best work are often far from guaranteed. In fact, it can often feel like your organization is actively making your job harder, not easier. This brings us to the question: What would it take to create the ideal conditions for service design to achieve its maximum impact? And how can we actually put those conditions in place?Well, as you might have guessed already, that's where Design Operations (aka DesignOps) comes in.Getting started with DesignOps (or scaling it) can be a real challenge, especially in organizations that don't have a strong design heritage. But the good news is that John Calhoun and Rachel Posman have done the heavy lifting for us. They've gathered best practices from experienced DesignOps professionals and compiled them into a brand-new book "The Design Conductors".This book promises to help you kickstart or scale your DesignOps efforts more effectively, make a bigger impact, and sidestep common pitfalls. The result? Making your life as a service design professional a whole lot easier! So, with this foresight, we of course need to know more about this book. And you guessed it, that's exactly what this episode is all about. Here's already one key insight from the conversation: Every organization is already doing design operations. Most are just doing it unconsciously and missing out on the benefits. Yeah, there's a lot of low-hanging fruit waiting to be picked...--- [ 1. Favour and Sonia also explore strategies for promoting the book, particularly through Pinterest and speaking engagements. They touch upon the themes of personal growth, advocacy, and using one's story to connect with and inspire others. Sonia also mentions her podcast, "On the Spectrum with Sonia," which further explores these topics and highlights stories of overcoming adversity.Frequently Asked Questions with Sonia1. What was the initial inspiration behind writing your book, "Dropped in a Maze"? The inspiration struck in 2005 while attending a book fair in Chicago. Witnessing numerous authors openly sharing their personal stories, including experiences of war, trauma, and hardship, deeply moved me. It sparked the realization that my own story, navigating life after a late diagnosis of high-functioning autism, was also worth telling. As we were leaving, the thought, "Oh my god, I need to write my story. If they're telling their story, why can't I?" became the catalyst for "Dropped in a Maze."2. What are some of the core themes explored in "Dropped in a Maze"? The book delves into various aspects of navigating life with high-functioning autism, both before and after the diagnosis at age 20. Key themes include the feeling of being socially and emotionally lost ("like being blindfolded in the maze of life"), the challenges of social connection and peer rejection, struggles with sensory issues and change, and learning at a different pace (including failing second grade). It also explores navigating different types of friendships, including toxic ones, and the complexities of therapeutic relationships, alongside broader themes of career, loneliness, and ostracism.3. What kind of impact has "Dropped in a Maze" had on readers since its launch? The book has resonated with a diverse audience. I've received messages from individuals who were also diagnosed late on the autism spectrum and found common ground, even across cultural backgrounds. A therapist found it helpful professionally and wrote a review. Notably, an editor who worked on the book, a former teacher, expressed wishing she had access to it during her teaching career, highlighting its potential educational value in understanding neurodiversity. How to stay connected with me
