Interviews With The Hunting Masters - Big game Hunting podcast
Corner Crossing with Zach Sandau Show Notes: A hot topic I've heard about over the last several years, at least since the invention of GPS software, is corner crossing. Zach Sandau knows a ton about this subject. I've been seeing a lot more about this recently, but it's been around forever. Since we've developed better mapping software, we've gotten much better, and it's replaced a lot of the paper maps people used to use. In the last 10 to 12 years, people started realized there's a lot of land that has a corner that's getting in the way of crossing. Zach currently lives in Montana and has been working for onX for over 7 years. onX is a mobile hunting map app that tracks over 850 million acres of public land and over 100 million private properties. One of the current issues was around some guys who went hunting in Wyoming and they were stopped twice and were told they were OK by local authorities, but the third time they were stopped, they were charged with trespassing. It became a big national case because of the implications. The case wound up going to court and the guys were charged and found not guilty. The thing that's the most interesting is that each state has different rules and regulations when it comes to corner crossing, which adds to the complexity of the issue. This creates a gray area and causes some hunters to avoid the situation altogether. onX actually helped me figure out a land situation in Wyoming as well. This new technology both helps hunters and opens a Pandora's box, as we now have more information than ever before. Zach shares insights from his work with onX and how they develop their technology. He also has some tips about how to deal with the checkerboard areas and how to navigate them and the nuances of access between public and private land. We wrap up by talking about the importance of activism as the hunting world evolves and changes. What's Inside: Why corner crossing has become more prevalent over the last several years. How onX helps hunters see corners and access more clearly. A recent corner crossing issue in Wyoming. Checkerboard areas and how to deal with them. Why technology like onX opens a Pandora's box when it comes to corner crossing. Frustrations around closed gates and how onX is finding a workaround. The importance of being a hunting activist. Whats up ladies and gents. Welcome to the ELK HUNT podcast! This is Cody Rich, if you are new here this podcast feed is a place for all of the Elk hunting interviews I have done over the last 6 or 7 years. This will eventually be one of the largest collections of elk hunting podcast and interviews ever compiled, which is pretty cool and I would love your guys help getting it out there to the world. To do that just leave a 5 star review and maybe tell a friend about it. Much appreciated, and enjoy! Hey If you want to be a good elk hunter there is one thing that I have noticed that every great hunter I have interviewed does that almost every new elk hunter does not. It's having a system. In my own quest to be a better hunter I sent out to learn from all the best hunters out there and the one thing they all have is a system that took them years to develop. Elk Hunt 201 Course Want to become a damn good elk hunter? You could listen to every elk hunting podcast in the world but until you develop a system you are going to stumble around in the woods trying to figure it out. What do every single one of the best elk hunters in the world have after years of honing their skills? a system. A system that allows them to find elk as soon as they hit the ground, get close to those elk, and then capitalize in the red zone. It's not some secret they know that know one else does, it's having a system and putting in the work. After interviewing hundreds of hunters and my own experience from the Oregon cost to the prairies of Montana I have put together my 4 step system in Elk Hunt 201 Course. Want to go from 101 to 201 this is the framework you need. Please note this is not for the newbie. If you are looking for a course on how to gut an animal this is not it. If you have experience but want to get better, go here!
On this episode, Clay is joined by an entirely new Render crew while at deer camp in Arkansas. Zach Sandau and Jared Larsen of OnX join the conversation along with Clay's good friend Rusty Johnson of United Outdoors. You'll enjoy the guys talking about some tough public land deer hunting and about Rusty's hardcore whitetail hunting tactics. Clay talks about the details of his doe kill and the crew spends the last thirty minutes analyzing the previous podcast, Folsom Part 2. Interviews With The Hunting Masters - Big game Hunting podcast
Episode #: 302 Title: Hunt Smarter, Not Harder With onX Maps Show Notes: I’ve been using onX maps as a guide and on my own hunts for a while now, and I consider them my secret to a better hunt. I talk with Zach Sandau from onX about how he uses the tool, how it’s evolved over the last 6 or 7 years, and why using it has changed his hunting habits. For Zach, one of the reasons this resource is so crucial are the many checkerboard boundaries that exist all over the country. If you’re driving down the road and you see what looks like a great area, how do you know for sure if you’re looking at public or private land? Zach talks about how he uses the map to find access roads to public lands, and how he uses the public/private land angle as he’s out hunting (and it’s a pretty genius idea). By marking out where he sees a herd throughout the year, Zach can better predict where the herd will be at any time during the year. The app helps him get a holistic picture of the herd, like where it prefers to eat, or where it’s breeding. This big picture view helps him figure out where they might be bedding down, and helps him zero in on a hunt more quickly. Some of the not-so-obvious benefits of the app are using it to find an animal that you shot from a distance. When there’s topography, I like to switch to top-o mode to find identifying landmarks to find an animal. The better I get at using the app, the more I can see how it has become the number one deciding factor on many of my hunts. As a company, onX is committed to meeting the needs of their customers. Zach assures me that they’re constantly adapting the app to meet the needs of their customers by simplifying data and adding better features. What’s Inside: How Zach uses the onX app to prepare for a hunt. Naming hunting districts and color-coding icons helps Zach manage hunts. How the app has changed how I guide hunts now. Stalking in on an animal using the range finder simplifies things. Mentioned in this Episode: onX Maps website Short Description: If you’ve ever been out on a hunt and come across an unexpected fence marking a boundary, then you might understand why it can be frustrating to not know where public lands end and private lands begin. I talk with Zach Sandau from onX Hunt about how we both use the onX map to plan and strategize better hunts, and Zach shares some insider tips on how to best utilize this app. Tags: Hunting apps, hunting strategies, planning a hunt, range finder, hunting districts, hunting on private land, hunting on public land, hunting technology

Over the past 4 episodes of our Hunt Tech mini-series we've explored a deer movement prediction app with the Drury's and their new app called Deercast, the on-demand action camera with Aaron Stonehocker from Tactacam, a game camera picture data processing system with Jon Livingston from DeerLab, and mapping and waypoint technology with Zach Sandau from OnX Hunt. Now, we move onto the arrow and the broadhead with David Hand from Slash Arrows. The earliest evidence of the arrow launched from a bow dates back some 10,000 years and we've seen some amazing arrow and the broadhead advancements in technology since the aluminium arrow was first introduced. Every year there seems to be a new innovative arrow and broadhead design and David Hand may have one of the most innovative designs in recent years. We asked David to join us to explore all the innovations over the last 20 years, where things are today, and what the future of the arrow and the broadhead looks like for archery hunters. Remember when maps were on paper? We use to spend money on paper topo maps and put a thumbtack on that map to represent a deer sighting, effectively creating heat map with multiple thumbtacks. Then along came Google and Google Maps. It was a revolutionary step forward in scouting technology, but there were some very important pieces missing from the Google map. For one, we couldn't instantly in-the field in real-time tell where the boundary lines of property existed. Sure, we could spend hours looking at town survey maps, but nothing was instant. And who the heck owned the property? That was another game of tracking down slow information points. These were all the challenges that Eric Siegfried, founder of OnX Maps had at one time. All of the information was available, but not instantly on any single device in an organized manner when you needed it. So, Eric set out to fix all that with his new company. A decade later, with a subscription and smart phone or GPS you can instantly have access to all this information. It's a game changer for the hunter. You'll learn more about the areas that you hunt than you ever thought to ask and it makes the hunting possibilities endless. We dive deep into all the bells, whistles, and capabilities that OnX has to offer with Zach Sandau, Project Co-Ordinator for OnX Hunt. This is part IV of our series on hunting technology and stay tune for out next episode when we explore arrow and broad head technology with David Hand CEO of Ballistic Arrow Tech and Slash Arrows.
