Missouri killer Maury Travis is better known as the Videotape Killer. His disturbing VHS collection was uncovered in a search of his home, along with plans to build a basement torture chamber. The killer's MO was to target primarily black sex workers, whose disappearances are less likely to be investigated. Travis died before he could be convicted, but is believed to have murdered around 17 women. His first victim, 33-year-old Alysa Greenwade, was found 21 years ago today. Hey everyone! What happens when you mix a porno with traveling teens? This episode is about horror. A24's X is our Recent Review this week, and we paired it with the slasher horror flick, Tourist Trap (1979). While both are horror films, our Variety Time segment is about the horrors of when critics get it horribly wrong. Yes, that's right. We're talking about the Turning Red review published by Cinema Blend and the controversy surrounding the Pixar film. Next week, our Recent Review is Deep Water, available to stream on Hulu, and our Geriatric Cinematic is Brian De Palma's Body Double (1984), available for rent on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, YouTube, and other VOD services. Be sure to follow us on Twitter (@TheReelAppeal), Facebook, Instagram, and you can contact the show at TheReelAppeal@gmail.com. Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy tackle seven new films this week. They include a couple from Sundance they have not talked about yet from the 2-part documentary on HBO MAX from Amy Berg about Evan Rachel Wood's traumatic relationship with Marilyn Manson (Phoenix Rising) and Regina Hall in a ghost story about racial dynamics on a college campus (Master). Steve reviews about a Buddy Guy apprenticeship (The Torch) and Erik handles an odd hostage comic thriller with Jason Segel, Lily Collins and Jesse Plemons (Windfall). There is a better example of the singular setting chess game in a thriller with Mark Rylance and Zoey Deutsch (The Outfit), but also a peculiar misfire from Adrian Lyne garnering an early reputation of “so bad it's good” (Deep Water). Finally, they dig into what makes Ti West's new film stand apart from so many other slaughterhouse tales (X). 0:00 - Intro 1:45 - Phoenix Rising 10:01 – The Torch 17:19 – Windfall 25:54 – Master 38:02 – Deep Water 59:32 – The Outfit 1:09:51 – X 1:31:50 - Outro

This one's for the cartography geeks! We know that's a lot of our followers. Peng Shepherd joins us to think about what a map of your fantasy world can tell your readers, what the social and cultural implications of a map's presentation might be, and how much time you should spend squiggling in all those little fjords. Plus: Schrodinger's Continents, a bowling alley on the Enterprise, and an augmentation for our Magical Nude Gate system of travel! Transcript for Episode 71 (thank you, scribes!) Our Guest: Peng was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, where she rode horses and trained in classical ballet, and has lived in Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, London, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., New York, and Mexico City. Her first novel, The Book of M, won the 2019 Neukom Institute for Literary Arts Award for Debut Speculative Fiction, and was chosen as a best book of the year by Amazon, Elle, Refinery29, and The Verge, as well as a best book of the summer by the Today Show and NPR On Point. A graduate of the NYU MFA program, Peng is the recipient of a 2020 fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as the Elizabeth George Foundation's emerging writers 2016 grant. Her second novel, The Cartographers, is forthcoming from HarperCollins in March 2022.

Popdose writer and host of the podcast X Marks the Pod Beau Dure speculated why today's music sucks on his podcast. Well, Ted Asregadoo invited him to Planet LP to talk about the opposite: Why music today does not suck. In a world where recording music is much, much easier than it was between the 1960s to the early 2000s, finding good to great new music can be a challenge. Ted and Beau talk about some of those challenges in a landscape where a lot of good music gets buried in a sea of mediocrity.

We begin our look at the third stringers of the '67 Kaiju Boom with The X From Outer Space, one of the most divisive monster movies ever. Monster Kid Hall of Famer Derek M. We open the pod talking about Drake's continued tummy trouble, Kevin has started slacking at work, and we provide a betting recap from Championship weekend. We get into some CFP final rankings and then discuss the possibility of ANOTHER Walkon meetup in Orlando? Stay tuned because you do not want to miss those details. We dive into some details about the Charity golf tournament that we are trying to cook up and then we get into the juicy stuff. Deuce Hogan's mom is not on the podcast but she is on Facebook and we talk all about parents on social media, the comment made from Coach Ferentz that was described as 'Slander', as well as the implications on Deuce's career moving forward. Tyrone Tracy is in the portal and we talk about his contribution as a Hawk and what he did for the program, and we react LIVE as Xavier Nwankpa, the nations top high school safety from South East Polk, made his decision while we were recording. All of this and more.

RIP DMX, your legacy has left a dynamic impression on our souls. You will be sorely missed yet greatly remembered. Shigg and Missy have brief discussions on: Prince Phillip, Thandiwe Newton, Nikki Minaj, shrimp tails in Cinnamon Toast Crunch, bullets in Flamin Hot Cheetos. Until next time, you rock with us, we'll rock with you. Peace.
As I briefly specified within yesterdays video on regards to the X, the center or intersection signifies the balancing, the equilibrium, the perfected state of the Higher Being. Quoted from the site: https://www.richardcassaro.com/esoteric-symbolism-egypts-crook-flail/ "The “crossing” of the two staffs above the chest has various meanings and connotations, but the one most pertinent for our discussion is the act of “combining” their power together (the two instruments are held in the right and left hands in a parallel manner) showing they have equal strength. The Osirianised dead, by crossing these two symbolic staffs over his or her chest, were conveying the idea that he / she had used both tools to help them become the Master of his / her own self—to help them become an Osiris. By using these twin instruments of self-control to subdue their lower animal nature, the deceased had “followed in the footsteps” of Osiris (the Egyptian Buddha or Christ) and found their higher Self." This week, Armon breaks down the hypocrisy of complaining about "Ring chasing" yet criticizing players for never winning a ring. (01:44 - 29:39) MLB made the easy choice, by moving their All-Star game out of Atlanta after Georgia passed suppressive voter right laws, unfortunately the Braves couldn't let a good decision go without a self inflicted wound. (29:41 - 44:15) And "Snowfall" is one of the best shows on T.V. but its taken a hit after losing a legend. Is it time to worry about the future of the show? (53:03 - 1:13:44)

Blind Bargains Audio: Featuring the BB Qast, Technology news, Interviews, and more
Our virtual convention coverage is in full swing, with a deep dive into the happenings at Humanware. Joining J.J. in the simulated Exhibit Hall is Peter Tucic, Blindness Products Brand Ambassador, for his first interview in front of the BBQast microphones. The pair discuss all the features in the new Brailliant BI 20X and 40x units along with how they differ from the APH models. They then turn their attention to the Victor Reader Trek and its most recent GPS update. But that is just the tip of the iceberg as they cover more ground, including the recent service outage. To learn more, join the BI-X mailing list at brailliant-bi-x-users+subscribe@groups.io or visit the Humanware website Blind Bargains Virtual Exhibit Hall coverage is Brought to you by AFB AccessWorld. On this week’s episode of HIM Podcast the guys chat about hot topics such as Saweetie + Quavo, bills passed against trans youth, Donnie McClurkin, and Lil Nas X.
There have been, so far, only two positives from this pandemic that I can see. One, Zoom technology has finally lead to the long delayed question, “Wait, all this time I could have been doing your podcast from my house???” Turns out yes! I don't see that going to the how we did it, “In The Before Times” anytime soon. The second cool thing has been the release of ALPHABETLAND by X. John Doe, Exene Cervenka, Billy Zoom and DJ Bonebrake formed X in the heyday of the late '70's LA punk scene. Their first album, Los Angeles, was released in 1980, and they quickly made an indelible mark on American music. I love ‘em and I always have. Now I had heard, being a fan and all, that they were recording some stuff, and I naturally assumed it was a one-off for a soundtrack or somesuch. But them, on the 40th anniversary of the release of Los Angeles, Bandcamp announced that the album ALPHABETLAND was available for immediate download. The huh the whaaaaa? So I bought it, sat down to listen. And I knew it would be good. But, you know, it's their first album in 27 years. I was prepared to grade on a curve. No need. It. Blew. My. Socks off. From the first cut to the last, it is a 27 minute punk rock fist to the solar plexus. tt starts out great, it never lets up and it ends with a flourish. Now many of you may recall that last year Mr. Doe and our mutual friend Tom De Savia were kind enough to invite me to moderate the panel for the book More Fun In The New World, which is the second installment of their two part oral history of LA Punk, the forst being Under The Big Black Sun, both available where fine books are sold. Tom was kind enough to make a call and I am very happy to say we have John Doe and DJ Bonebrake on the podcast today to talk about the album. So let's get right to it. https://DanaGould.com
X Marks the spot! Let's Go!
