Welcome back to another episode of the Generations of Hunt podcast, where we dive into the bucking truth of hunting and outdoor adventures. I'm joined by my co-host, Matt, and we kick things off by discussing the recent weather changes and how it's the perfect time to start hiking for sheds. We share some personal anecdotes about the brutal cold and the excitement of finding sheds. We then transition into a discussion about deer holding their antlers longer due to a second rut and the impact of a mild winter. Matt shares his buddy's theory on this, and we debate the scientific evidence behind it. We also touch on the importance of starting early to find sheds before the state land gets crowded with people and their dogs.Next, we delve into the recent Team USA ice fishing tournament held in Michigan, where the US team disappointingly placed sixth. We joke about the challenges of releasing fish from the ice and the potential of making ice fishing an Olympic sport. The conversation takes an interesting turn as we discuss survival shows. We ponder whether we would participate in one and share our thoughts on the mental and physical challenges involved. We also talk about the strategies and hardships faced by contestants on shows like "Alone" and "Survivor."We then shift gears to discuss the National Deer Association's findings on the distance between shed antlers. According to their research, 56% of match sets are found within 10 yards of each other, which is a fascinating insight for shed hunters. Our discussion moves to the impact of weather on deer movement, referencing a new MSU Deer Lab study. We debate the effectiveness of hunting apps and the importance of actual deer sightings over predictive models. We also touch on the controversy surrounding new solar panel projects in Michigan, particularly in Gaylord. We discuss the role of organizations like BHA in pausing these projects and the potential impact on public lands. Finally, we dive into the topic of antler point restrictions (APRs) and their effectiveness in encouraging hunters to shoot more does. We reference another MSU study that suggests APRs do not significantly impact doe harvest rates.

It is that time of year once again where bucks are shedding their antlers, and boots are hitting the ground to get out and search for those antlers. For a majority of hunters, shed season is an awesome time of the year, you get to hopefully find the antlers from your target buck, you may find sheds to a new buck, or you find new areas on a farm to hunt. If you are an avid shed hunter, then you have probably heard the phrase "miles equal piles". The real question is how much validity does that phrase have? Is it all about putting in miles for a ton of antlers, or are there other legit strategies? Exploring Iowa's Public Land: Big Rubs, Shed Hunting, and Scouting for Future Hunts In this episode of Dropping Pins, Derek embarks on his first-ever public land scouting trip in Iowa. With a possible tag draw in two years, he's putting boots on the ground, marking stand locations, and soaking in everything the terrain has to offer. From massive rubs and historical scrapes to ideal bedding areas and overlooked hotspots, Derek covers miles of ground, uncovering prime whitetail sign along the way. The trek isn't just about finding sheds (though he does walk away with two fresh ones). It's about understanding how mature bucks use the land—where they bed, travel, and stage before heading to food sources. Whether you're gearing up for your own out-of-state hunt or just love the thrill of scouting new ground, this episode is packed with takeaways that will help you dial in your whitetail strategy.

In this episode we talk with Eve Hoehle of Von Major Sheds Kennel about shed hunting. Eve lives with, competes with, and breeds German Short Haired Pointers. Shed hunting gets its name from the antlers animals such as deer, elk and moose "shed" each year. Shed hunting is scent work, but out in the open, off leash, and specifically for medium white tail deer antlers (if you are competing). The sport is less than 10 years old and was developed from wild shed hunting. Eve explains that for competition it can be any terrain which can make the sport physically demanding. For championship trials it is set in a course the size of a football field with 5 antlers that are partially or fully hidden. The dog needs to deliver all 5 antlers to the human competitor's hand within 10 minutes. This sport naturally attracts more retrieving breeds, but is welcoming to every breed of dog. Eve talks to us about how she got started in this sport as well as how she starts training dogs for the sport. Although she starts exposing her puppies to sheds at an early age, she promises that dogs of all ages can be successfully introduced to the sport and gives some great resources to get started. A couple years back I spent two days shed hunting in South Dakota; I learned a lot about how deer choose where to spend there time, and I think it's very applicable to the Midwest.
