In 1980, a 20-year-old Graham Broyd turned a prestigious six-week scholarship to Washington, D.C. into the adventure of a lifetime. He traded his ticket for a flight to Los Angeles with a dream of surfing in Malibu and a wild plan to hitchhike across the country. In this episode, Graham shares the incredible story of his journey, a tale he revisited in 2024 to see how the country and he had changed. This is the ultimate story of hitchhiking across America then and now. What happens when you have just $600 to survive for six weeks, relying on your wits and the kindness—or danger—of strangers? This sprawling conversation, a must-listen for fans of incredible travel stories, is like a living "Backpack, Jacket, Surfboard" book review. Author Graham Broyd sits down with Blaine DeSantis to recount his unbelievable journey. We hear tales of extreme budget survival, like his method for turning a single Big Mac into a three-course meal, a story that comically landed his book in the "cooking humor" category on Amazon. Graham shares the unwritten rules and etiquette of the road, offering a fascinating look into the lost art of hitchhiking. This Graham Broyd travel memoir comes to life as he discusses his disastrous first attempt at surfing in Malibu, how he acquired an eight-foot surfboard as a travel companion, and the frightening night he spent alone in the desolate expanse of Death Valley. The episode explores the stark difference between America in 1980 vs 2024, contrasting the past with the present through Graham's retraced journey. He shares thrilling and sometimes chilling stories from hitchhiking America, from navigating an unwelcome advance near the Grand Canyon to the bizarre experience of ending up in Tijuana, Mexico on a trip to Malibu—a mystery he still hasn't solved. We learn how a single smart jacket gave him access to the high-rolling casinos of 1980s Las Vegas and how a chance encounter in a youth hostel led to a stunning interview with Senator Howard Baker about the Panama Canal Treaty. This detailed look at hitchhiking across America then and now culminates in a tale of unexpected benevolence on the gritty subways of New York City, proving that adventure and humanity can be found where you least expect them.About Our Guest:Graham Broyd is the author of the travel memoir "Backpack, Jacket, Surfboard." In 1980, at the age of 20, he embarked on an impromptu hitchhiking trip across the United States, a journey that profoundly shaped his life. Over 40 years later, he retraced his steps to recapture 24 photos from his original trip, discovering not only how much America had changed, but how much he had as well.Timestamps:(00:00) A Scholarship Becomes an Epic Adventure(02:12) From D.C.

What's in your backpack? What are you carrying around with you from yesterday? Life is full of adventure, lessons, memories, and stress. As we go and do stuff and interact with others, we have a tendency to take bits of those moments and carry them with us. Those bits can add up to weigh us down. When we focus on God, He will tell us what we need to carry and what to drop. We get to start each day with an empty backpack. We can choose to not carry the past with us.Have a listen, and let us know what you think.Have the best week! Enjoy the journey!

When it comes to a child's backpack, 10% to 15% of body weight is the maximum safe range, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). For example, a backpack that weighs 6.6 to 10 lbs. (3 to 4.5 kg) is recommended for a child weighing 66 pounds (30 kilograms) 5% to 10% of body weight is recommended for smaller children, those who have longer walks or commute, or if pain is already present Weigh, don't guess — use a bathroom scale to check. If the pack exceeds the range, remove items or split the load The way a backpack fits is just as important as its weight. Always use two straps, keep the pack high and snug, and place heavier items close to the spine Watch for warning signs that a backpack is too heavy, including leaning forward, red strap marks, tingling or numbness, or frequent complaints of back, neck, or shoulder pain

We find out about a portable operating theatre called SurgiBox that fits in a backpack and inflates in minutes, creating a sterile space for operations almost anywhere. We meet the inventor, see it put to the test, and speak to a surgeon who has used it to save lives far from a hospital. We also hear from Field Ready, whose engineers in Syria are using 3D printing to bring broken hospital equipment back to life, and we hear about Sudan's Emergency Response Rooms — grassroots command centres where volunteers coordinate life-saving help and vital information in the midst of war.Presenter: Myra Anubi Producer: Craig Langran Editor: Jon Bithrey Sound mix: Gareth Jones(Image: A 'patient' demonstrates the equipment in the Surgibox, BBC)

The More Sibyl Podcast Presents: 학교 부모 현실| Raising Kids, Navigating Schools: What Parents Really Face | Episode 28 (2025)It's back-to-school season, and while many families are packing lunches and buying supplies, some of us — especially in immigrant or multicultural homes — carry invisible loads. We're advocating for kids who don't “fit the mold,” navigating behavioral concerns, or trying to decode school systems never designed with us in mind. That's why we hosted “More Than a Backpack,” a live panel born out of my own rough start to kindergarten with my daughter. What followed was a raw, honest, and deeply needed conversation with parents and professionals who know this weight firsthand.Ms. Farah, worship pastor, creative leader, and mom of six, shared wisdom from home and ministry. Her reminder: the system is too overwhelmed to parent our kids and knowing their individual needs is our sacred work.Dr. Ihyembe, developmental-behavioral pediatrician, explained why some appointments can't be squeezed into 15 minutes and how parents must see themselves as advocates, not outsiders. She drew a clear line between what pills can and can't do and when to seek professional help.Mr. Afolabiyi, husband and dad of three, spoke with candor about the quiet weight fathers carry, urging couples to stay united and keep children's needs first.Ms. Millicent, nurse practitioner, content creator, and mom of four, brought humor and honesty. She reminded us that “real” parenting isn't about being perfect, and that grace and connection matter just as much as grades.Ms. Shola Adewumi, mom of two and nursing student, shared her journey raising a son labeled “too emotional.” Guided by faith, she learned to trust her instincts and advocate for him in ways that mattered. In my own reflections, I compared navigating U.S. schools with Nigeria's system and saw how adaptation isn't optional; it's essential. Across all stories ran the same thread: parents filling gaps with lessons, encouragement, and relentless advocacy, because our children are more than grades or labels.

In this episode, host Zach Urness talks with outdoors intern Rose Shimberg about backpacking the 40-mile trail around Mount Hood: the Timberline Trail. In late August, Shimberg spent three nights backpacking the loop, journeying through terrain including waterfalls, high alpine landscapes, lush forests and deep canyons. She reports on how to navigate the trail's notorious stream crossings and the status of the "blowdown section" that was closed for years by downed trees. Shimberg also talks about where to find cell service, find an amazing breakfast and spots on the trail to not miss.

As the new school year opens, a new report from the Latet organization points to persistent socio-economic gaps that underscore the challenges for needy youth to thrive. According to the report, over half a million children are beginning the new school year in poverty. Two thirds of supported families reported their children lack basic school supplies and textbooks, while 84 percent could not finance extracurricular activities for their children. Key Takeaways: You're going to hand your kids a "backpack" whether you like it or not—the goal is to make it as light as possible by dealing with your own emotional health first. Non-reactive parenting starts with slowing your breath and asking "what else is going on here?" instead of jumping to conclusions. Resilience isn't about avoiding hard emotions—it's about how quickly you recover and what you learn from difficult seasons. Your calendar reveals your true values; intentional rhythms like family dinners and Sabbath don't happen by accident. One of the greatest gifts you can give your children is your own repentance when you mess up. GUEST: Glenn Packiam is the author of The Intentional Year and several other books focused on spiritual formation and resilience. He's a pastor, speaker, and father of four children ranging from teenagers to young adults. Glenn lives in Southern California with his wife Holly, and his oldest daughter recently got engaged. He's passionate about helping parents move from survival mode to intentional, rhythmic family life that builds resilience in both parents and children.
