The panelists, Social Work Professor Nafees Alam, Psychotherapist Stella O'Malley, and author and Social Worker Zander Keig, discuss the nuance and complexities of balancing competitive fairness with inclusivity. Send Wilk a text with your feedback!Exploring The Third Space: Transcending Rigid BinariesJoining me again today is my friend, Zander Keig, someone of remarkable depth and impact. Zander wears many hats—award-winning social worker, speaker, educator, caregiver, and bestselling author. You may remember Zander from his 1st appearance on DTH back in September of 2023 when we discussed how the Trans community is often mistakenly believed to be a monolith. Zander is a thought leader with a profound ability to guide individuals and communities toward resolution and redemption. As a ProHuman Foundation Advisor and co-founder of the LGBTQ Caregiver Center, Zander has dedicated his life to bridging divides and fostering unity. In today's episode, we'll unpack concepts from Zander's book, The Third Space: A Nonconformist's Guide to the Universe. What is the “Third Space,” and how does it help us transcend the rigid binaries that often define identity and community? Zander brings a unique perspective as a neurodivergent, first-generation Mexican American who has navigated life's challenges with resilience and grace. His story and insights are a lighthouse for those searching for ways to navigate conflict, isolation, and division. We'll discuss how creating inclusive spaces can foster greater understanding, why education is crucial in combatting ignorance and hate, and how organizations like the ProHuman Foundation and Braver Angels are making a difference. Above all, we'll explore the redemptive potential of human connection—because no matter our past, the future holds possibilities for growth, community, and shared humanity.TakeawaysThe 'Third Space' allows for unique identities beyond binaries.Creating inclusive spaces can foster community and understanding. The lighthouse symbolizes guidance and navigation through challenges.Education is key to overcoming ignorance and hate.Isolation can have severe impacts on mental and physical health.Conflict resolution requires recognizing our shared humanity.Nonconformity can lead to personal growth and community support. The Pro Human Foundation promotes anti-racism through understanding, not division.Human connection is essential in combating loneliness and hate.Learn moreWhat have you done today to make your life a better life? What have you done today to make the world a better place? The world is a better place if we are better people. That begins with each of us as individuals. Be kind to one another. Be grateful for everything you've got. Make each and every day the day that you want it to be! Many cultural critics have expressed a mounting concern about prevalent attitudes that promote fragile mentalities, potentially crippling a generation and leaving them underprepared for the demands of adult life. Today's roundtable panel brings together experts in mental health, social work, and social-emotional learning to discuss these concerns. How do narratives about our ability to bounce back from adversity shape our mental health and impact our outcomes? The discussion touches on the importance of self-awareness and the practice of mindfulness in strengthening our emotional resilience. But what happens when our nervous system goes haywire, and we can't trust our emotions? How do we navigate through moments of distress and disorientation? The guests share personal experiences and insights on how to cultivate mental fitness in a world filled with fear and self-censorship. Join us as we unravel the complexities of emotional well-being and resilience in the modern age.Jake Wiskerchen, LMFT owns and operates Zephyr Wellness in northern Nevada and serves on the board of Walk the Talk America. Zander Keig grew up in an unconventional household, as his father explored alternative spiritual practices like meditation and yoga alongside his career in engineering. Zander was exposed to these ideas from a young age. When COVID lockdowns began, Zander and his wife had to care for his father full-time while working remotely, which caused stress and isolation. Zander's father's health rapidly declined after moving to assisted living. When his father was scammed out of $18,000, Zander realized something was wrong as his father had always been very conscientious but no longer recognized scams. Zander would move his father to Florida, taking on the role of primary caregiver for his elderly father, who was living with dementia. Despite the challenges of caring for his declining father, Zander tapped into various support systems, attending both grief and all-male caregiver support groups. During visits, Zander focused on sensory experiences over memories of visiting his father. Today, Zander is committed to helping other LGBTQ caregivers by sharing his story and resources through consultative services.

The Trans Community IS NOT A Monolith Assuming that groups of people think as a monolith is a simplistic and often harmful mindset. It oversimplifies the rich diversity of perspectives and experiences within any given group, ignoring individual differences and perpetuating stereotypes. People are shaped by a multitude of factors, including their upbringing, culture, personal experiences, and beliefs, which can lead to a wide range of opinions and viewpoints even within the same demographic category. Recognizing and respecting this diversity is essential for fostering understanding and promoting inclusivity in our increasingly interconnected world. If you only listen to the loudest voices in modern society, you might not know that The Trans Community IS NOT A Monolith.Who is Zander Keig? Zander Keig is an award-winning social worker, author and educator.  Zander is a first-generation American Latino transsexual man who delivers sought-after impactful emotional intelligence and constructive conflict resolution presentations, serves as an advisor and trainer for the LGBTQ Caregiver Center, and co-hosts the international radio show The Umbrella Hour.I first learned of Zander through his past work with the organization FAIR (Foundation Against Intolerance & Racism) and then got to know more about him more recently through our work with Braver Angels. Recently, Zander went from being WPATH Educator of the Year to becoming the subject of an ethics complaint and an underhanded cancel campaign — for committing the unforgivable sin of advising the Gender Dysphoria Alliance. Long-time listeners of this show have heard from numerous voices in the post-trans community, all of whom feel that the beliefs and medical practices surrounding transgender identification have been harmful to them. Today's guest, on the other hand, has a different perspective. Zander Keig is a "trans man” with no regrets after 17 years on testosterone. As it turns out, though, Zander and I have a few things in common. We're both mental health professionals who share practical concerns about how certain culturally sanctioned ways of thinking and relating to others impact wellbeing. We've both been accused of bigotry for expressing concerns about whether “transitioning” is right for everyone. And we're both world-bridgers, who respect viewpoint diversity, and see the need to help society collectively navigate sensitive issues more gracefully. In this episode, Zander debunks the myth of the "trans monolith,” arguing there is no consensus in his community about the right way to approach certain issues. We exchange ideas about how certain prevalent mentalities, narratives, and dialectics impact behavioral health and social wellbeing. Zander articulates his pragmatic understanding of how and why emotional health should not be taken for granted, nor can it be catered by the outside world, but must be actively cultivated by the individual. We share our mutual concerns for the welfare of trans-identifying people in general, whether or not they will eventually desist. And we debate important questions for which there are no easy answers, such as: what should the future of healthcare for trans identifying people look like, and how should it be governed? Plus, Zander shares about his own personal history. Zander began his “transition” in his late 30's, after a lifetime of facing discrimination as a gender-nonconforming butch lesbian. Zander had no history of dysphoria earlier in life, yet he felt as though a weight had been lifted the moment he started taking testosterone. What does this tell us about the relationships between sexism, homophobia, social pressures, and transition? Zander also tells us about how counseling would have been helpful during such a disorienting time in his life, and how, despite the horror stories we've all heard, his marriage survived his transition just fine.If I do say so myself, I believe we had an excellent discussion. We each represented a different voice with which many others will find themselves agreeing. I believe an ongoing dialectic between these two different perspectives is necessary in order to help move society forward constructively while navigating unprecedented challenges.Zander Keig is an award-winning licensed clinical social worker, educator, and author who served in the US Coast Guard. Zander serves as an Advisory Board member and Senior Fellow for the Foundation Against Intolerance & Racism (FAIR) and helps develop and deliver FAIR's corporate diversity training, emotional wellness, and interpersonal growth courses. As a trans man and first-generation American of Mexican heritage with subject matter expertise in transgender health, social care, and mental wellness, Zander brings a unique perspective to all aspects of his work. You can find Zander's work at ZanderKeig.net, Zanderology on Locals, or FairForAll.org.A note on pronouns and my choice of guest: My audience comprises many thoughtful people with a wide range of viewpoints on controversial issues in the field of gender. Many open questions are up for debate in the broader community, such as the notion of “true trans;” conceptualization around “dysphoria” and social contagion; and of course, the question of pronouns. Perhaps you recall how I spoke with Jayme in episode 28, and what I stipulated in that show's notes and introductions, or how I spoke with Corinna Cohn in episode 31. Given that I have grown increasingly comfortable over time with sticking to biology-based pronouns despite social pressures to do otherwise, some listeners who favor this approach may find themselves disappointed or frustrated that I reverted to calling Zander, a biological female, “he.” I understand this frustration. The erosion of truth in language has real consequences for the human psyche, and broader cultural implications as well. On principle, I remain committed to speaking truth, and honesty is one of my topmost guiding values. I don't want to be manipulated, coerced, or frightened into denying reality. However, many social situations challenge us to strike a balance between competing values, and selecting one guiding principle above all others may come across as rigid, inflexible, and imbalanced. For instance, those who choose brutal honesty in all situations, without incorporating kindness as a counterbalancing virtue, can often come across as insensitive jerks, and have difficulty making friends with anyone but the thickest-skinned.In the case of my conversation with Zander, it simply would have felt stilted to remain committed to this form of honesty at all costs and insist on calling Zander “she.” Not only do I know that Zander goes by “he” and prefers not to talk about it; not only was I in the earliest stages of building a relationship with a colleague who kindly offered his time to be a guest on my show; but also, frankly, everything about Zander's appearance and presentation, not the least of which include his bald head, enormous beard, and deep voice, intuitively reads as "male.” We are an unprecedented situation that evolutionary biologists I admire (Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying) might call “hyper-novelty.” Never before in human history has there been such a thing as a female whose physiology has been altered by years of exposure to large doses of male hormones. Whenever faced with such a radical and complex challenge, I think it advisable to summon patience, goodwill, and temperance. It seems to create a sort of psychic split when we have to reckon with such a profound inner tension between what we cognitively know to be the reality (“this is a female on testosterone”), and how we intuitively read it (sensing maleness or femaleness via the same unconscious processes that have allowed us to correctly intuit one another's sex without thinking about it 99% of the time since time immemorial). This split is at the heart of many contentious issues within the community of those of us who debate gender issues in any capacity. Radical activists on the pro-trans side of the debate would like the rest of us to feel guilty and repent for committing “literal violence” for having dared refuse to comply with their attempts to deceive us. Meanwhile, activists on the gender critical side see the blatant, glib, remorseless choice to deceive us as Machiavellian, dangerous, and unworthy of our respect or compliance. While I generally align with gender critical views, I sometimes depart ideologically from other GCs' stances by favoring such virtues as nuance, world-bridging, forgiveness, redemption, grace, charity, and cooperation. For example, I was recently name-called, slandered, and blocked by a gender critical feminist who followed me on Twitter when I came to the defense of EJ Rosetta, who I respect for having publicly acknowledged she was wrong about something — a mature and principled move many people go their whole lives without risking. You can see a part of this exchange here. I can no longer view the whole thread, as the other person involved has blocked me.Many GCs and radfems will forever draw hard lines that exclude people like Zander and declare them unworthy of the sort of collegial dialogue we had in this episode. And, as I am unfortunately reminded every month or two on Twitter, some of these folks seemingly have no qualms with escalating to name-calling and character assassination the moment someone they follow (including me) amplifies any message they do not agree with 100%. Frankly, this kind of behavior strikes me as toddler-esque: lacking the maturity it takes to recognize that other people are separate from you, entitled to their own opinions, worthy of respect; not divinely ordained to serve as your personal mouthpieces, nor deserving of righteous rage the moment they fail to fulfill this role you assigned them in your mind. While I dislike overgeneralizing, I can't help but to think these are the same sorts of people who listen to my abortion debate with Robin Atkins (episode 27) and jump straight to making comments that attack the other side (whether pro-choice or pro-life), entirely missing the point of people on different sides of a complex issue attempting to have a respectful, nuanced discussion. So, if today's episode weeds out some of my audience, so be it. I'd love for all my listeners to be on board with my world-bridging mission, but I can't expect that to be the case. Perhaps, like episode 27, this one will serve as a litmus test for those who share my broader values, and not just those who like it when I say things that happen to align with their views on a controversial topic yet have no ethical qualms with flying off the handle at people they disagree with. It's not my intention to lose people, but when it does happen periodically, I trust and accept the process. If you enjoyed this conversation, please rate & review it on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. In this episode of OutBüro Voices featuring LGBTQ professionals, entrepreneurs, and community leaders from around the world, host Dennis Velco chats with Jennifer Henius and Zander Keig founders of the LGBTQ Caregiver Center. Jennifer has a long history of working in the caregiving space at the national headquarters for the US Veterans Affairs where she was in a leadership role within the caregiver support program. In that role, she worked on public policy including LGBTQ policy and the caregiver education and training curriculum where she worked to integrate LGBTQ awareness and sensitivity into the training curriculum. She is a licensed clinical social worker and healthcare consultant. Zander and Jennifer initially met through LinkedIn and soon realized their common interests. As covered in our past interview with Zander, we discussed his past military experience, and his past work at the US Veterans Affairs as well. Both Jennifer and Zander are caregivers for family members who are also US Veterans. The LGBTQ Caregiver Center provides resources, education, and services to empower LGBTQ Caregivers and those who care for LGBTQ people to improve their health, mental health, and wellness. The LGBTQ Caregiver Center is founded and directed by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals, advocates and allies. Caregiving is a major public health concern that impacts more than 53 million adults in the USA. Caregiving is far more common among LGBTQ individuals than cisgender or heterosexual adults. Caregiving can be physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially exhausting. Maintaining your health and wellness is essential. Their mission is to raise awareness of the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ Caregivers and those who care for LGBTQ individuals, empower LGBTQ Caregivers to live with pride and dignity, and serve as a conduit for education, wellness, training, and research. The Center provides information and resources, delivers training and innovative services to enhance the health and wellness of LGBTQ Caregivers. Learn more at https://lgbtqcaregivers.org/ Jennifer shares that past studies have not been inclusive yet recently organizations that conduct studies have realized the need to be fully inclusive and are now taking great measures to include the LGBTQ community. Further, advisory board members of the LGBTQ Caregiver Center are medical doctors who are experts on LGBTQ healthcare disparity. We chat about some of the unique needs of LGBTQ caregivers such as having to be a caregiver for a loved one that does not accept them for who they are. Zander shared his personal situation of caregiving for his father who has dementia and as a transgender person having to share his personal information with personnel at the assisted living facility in case his father starts to inquire about his daughter. Jennifer shares how many LGBTQ seniors who need assistance in-home or at care centers often return to the closet out of fear of discrimination, harassment, and the potential of care refusal. We discussed the need for LGBTQ training and certification for those organizations. After a military medical discharge, his career took a slightly winding path yet always with a focus on being of service to others. He became a local police officer, achieved a degree in conflict resolution with a focus on corporate merger and acquisition. But he then attended seminary focusing again on service to others achieving a Masters in Theology. Afterward, he began working in career services working for the State of California working with US Veterans. An economic downturn led to being laid off. and took the opportunity to relocate to Orlando, Florida to be close to family. During COVID he was led into his current role of providing consulting and coaching services virtually. Zander provides services through an Employer Assistance Program (EAP). Check to see if you have an EAP as part of your benefits. Familiarize yourself with their offerings and take advance of them. Zander shared that he is working on a new educational service exploring childhood adverse experiences, their impact on adulthood health, outlook, and lifestyle, and how to deal with such adversity in a healthy way. He explains the strong study based research that correlates trauma to addiction, homelessness, obesity, diabetes, heart health. These policies outline all the rights and entitlements for LGBTQI+ veterans have as medical patients. In addition, all VA centers have at least one LGBTQI+ Patient Care Coordinator who is like a patient advocate. The Affordable Care Act ACA) aka Obama Care opened the VA up to provide Healthcare to all US veterans who qualify based on income. I met Zanderat a friend's house-warming party.  We spoke of working within the government agency system of therapy and had a lively discussion.  I went home and "friended" him on Facebook  - I then discovered my new friend was quite a fascinating person, having lived a life of social advocacy for the LGBTQ population.  It was when I clicked on a link to his website that I saw he was not only an advocate, but a well-respected person in that community who had actually gone through the transition from female to male.Zander Keig is a unique individual, not only because he used to be a she, but because his life has been one of overcoming tremendous hardships, starting at birth. When Zander was born, the doctor predicted he would be dead, but he was not.  Then when he was 6, he developed encephalitis - he went into a coma and when he awoke, he had to relearn some basic life skills all over again.  Zander's life since then has been a journey of self-discovery and social advocacy.Zander and I discuss:His early life struggles and some family reflectionsWhy he identified with the "separatist lesbian" community and what that meant for himHow and when he began identifying as "trans"Why he feared TestosteroneHow he and his wife created a relationship that has withstood the stress of transitioningHow his education helped him understand those that did not understand himWhy he decided to edit and write books and articles on the subject of transitioning when his own transition is a very private experienceWhy trans men are often invisible in our societyHow intentionality informs his relationship with his wifeThe strange thing that happened when he went from being seen by society as a 1st-generation Mexican-American lesbian to a highly-educated white male - where did his culture go?The prejudices he experienced both pre and post transition were not what you'd think!Questions and CommentsAlthough we have comments turned off this blog in general, Zander welcomes your questions and comments.  Feel free to email me DrMullen@CoachingThroughChaos.com, or leave a comment or a question on my facebook page  and I will be happy to pass it on.ResourcesZander speaks of some of the books he's edited, the documentary being produced about his life journey and his website.  Here is where you can find those resources:Website:  ZanderKeig.netFilm: Episodes of ZanderologyBooks Zander has been involved in, including Manning Up and Letters for My Brothers can be found here http://www.zanderkeig.net/booksAwkward Correction on my partI realized when listening back to the produced episode that I was saying "LGBT and trans" when, of course in LGBT the T stands for trans - I don't know why I was saying it that way, but that's how it came out.  To anyone that thinks I was "not aware" - I am, I just speak faster than I think sometimes and it results in awkward verbal trip-ups.
