We all have hopes and dreams, and imagine how transition is going to go, and who we really are inside. But often the only way to actually get to that true person inside is by letting go of our preconceived notions of who we were going to be. Hello EIComrades, happy Pride month
We're once again asking if it's right or fair for trans women athletes to be competing with biological females, but some people want to have a much dumber, uglier conversation instead
Did you know that in the large majority of the United States, a violent cis person can attack a trans person, and a valid legal defense in court is "trans panic?" It's some bad nonsense, we'll discuss what it is, why it's a nightmare, and what we can do about it. Writer, comedian, and actress Riley Silverman joins us to discuss online fan discourse, and installing the right operating system for your body. This is not your regular, garden variety misogyny! A study conducted in Finland confirms what everyone already knew: that transgender people are mentally ill, and “gender-affirming care” is harmful for a person's long-term mental health. The Left has created the world's most outrageous and inclusive acronym. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) is rolling out his “racial equity plan” after discovering white households are more wealthy than black ones. Hunter Biden has his most cracked-out idea yet: challenging Eric Trump and Don Jr. to a cage match. This week, the Idaho Senate is considering a bill that would block transgender people from using public bathrooms that conform with their gender identity, escalating the state's preexisting trans bathroom ban in public schools. A first offense could land someone in prison for a year. This bill is just the latest in a devastating cascade of legal actions stripping away trans rights. For the midweek pod, host Brooke Gladstone speaks with Alejandra Caraballo, a civil rights attorney and a Clinical Instructor at Harvard Law School Cyberlaw Clinic, about why she's been looking toward a legal framework invented in the wake of Nazi Germany called "the dual state" to better understand this moment. Last month, Kansas passed a law requiring that the gender listed on all driver’s licenses and birth certificates match the person’s sex at birth. Similar laws have been adopted by other states. But Kansas is the first state to have made its law retroactive. Meaning that any person who previously changed their gender marker no longer has a valid license or birth certificate. With no grace period. 1,700 Kansans woke up to find their documents were no longer valid. Invalidating government-issued I.D. is just one of the ways transgender rights have been rolled back by recent state and federal policy changes. And that’s part of what’s prompting trans people to move to states with more legal protections. Including Washington. One Seattle nonprofit is working to help trans people living in conservative states to relocate. Guests: Adalyn - currently in the process of relocating to Seattle with Traction's help Michael Woodward - Executive Director of Traction, or “Trans Community Action,” a non-profit based here in Seattle. Aspen Coyle - Program Manager for Traction’s Project Open Arms, designed to assist trans people moving to Western Washington. As their public approval sinks lower and lower, the MAGA right is leaning harder and harder into policies of abject cruelty directed at vulnerable populations that have been turned into sacrificial scapegoats; that is especially true when it comes to immigrants and trans people. In the state of Kansas, for instance, Republicans just rammed through one of the most extreme anti-trans bills in the country. TRNN Editor-in-Chief speaks with journalist and LGBTQ+ policy analyst Erin Reed about how the new law is affecting trans Kansans and about the explosion of anti-trans policies around the country. From Martial arts to gun clubs, trans people are taking their personal safety into their own hands. This week, Imara is joined by two guests to help think through personal safety for trans people and what preparing for self defense can actually look like in an era when faith in law enforcement organizations—always precarious for the trans community—has reached new lows.First, Imara speaks with Fin Smith, also known as the Queer Armorer online. They are the founder of Rainbow Reload, a queer and trans centered gun club in New Hampshire. Then, Imara chats with Abigail Austin, a Thai boxing coach and founder of Red Panda Muay Thai in Seattle, Washington. This week's Trans Joy features a trans owned tattoo shop in Minneapolis. The deadly immigration enforcement operations in Minnesota, where local communities put themselves on the frontline to resist what amounts to an occupation, has led to trans and queer people being violently detained and retraumatized. Minnesota is where things have boiled over now, but it's far from the only place where this remains a continual threat. Today, Imara is joined by two guests to think through what safety for trans people who want to oppose ICE can look like. First up is Jess Braverman, the Legal Director of Gender Justice, a Minnesota-based organization dedicated to fighting back against the legal and structural barriers that trans people face in the Midwest and beyond. Then, Imara chats with Seal Dwyer, a therapist and community organizer from St. Cloud, Minnesota, about the ways queer people can step up for other marginalized communities. This week's trans joy features trans-owned adult retail shop Smitten Kitten in Minneapolis, which has transformed its space into a donation center for community members in need. Following several recent violent incidents involving transgender-identified perpetrators, media and lawmakers are increasingly proposing firearm restrictions based not on criminal conduct — but on identity. But what happens when investigators begin examining digital footprints instead of demographic categories? In this episode of Tranny Tuesday, Chad Law walks through:Why status-based firearm bans are analytically flawedWhat investigators are actually finding in online ecosystemsThe role of AI alignment discourse in emerging ethical radicalizationThe difference between academic long-termism and downstream extremismThe rise of the Zizian network within rationalist subculturesAnd why policymakers may be designing solutions to the wrong problem entirelyBecause banning a demographic group may feel decisive —but it does nothing to address a worldview.

There's almost nothing in this world better than gender euphoria, and yes I'm aware of both pizza and sex. In this episode Dennis and Ashleigh are joined by their spouses for a group discussion on the recent shooting of a Catholic school in Minnesota by a former trans student.
This is a vulnerable episode for me to share, but it was very important to me to record and release this episode because it highlights something I don't think we see enough: people in positions of power, privilege or leadership openly receiving feedback. Janie Ganga is a yoga teacher I deeply admire and have worked closely with for nearly a decade. In May of this year, they reached out to tell me something I had posted on social media had upset and hurt them. (Here is the reel that started it all.) We've had several conversations about the situation since, and this episode is the culmination and public sharing of how we worked through that. Please listen, share it widely, and let us know how it lands with you. Janie Ganga (she/they) is an E-RYT 500 Yoga Teacher, social justice activist, and co-owner of Santosha Yoga, an online studio rooted in the Providence, RI community. Certified in I AM Yoga since 2013, Ganga specializes in Private Yoga, Yoga Nidra, and Let Your Yoga Dance, and is completing certification as a Yoga Therapist. Beyond the mat, Janie has organized queer community events for years – creating queer friendly femme-centered spaces in Boston with madFemmePride and co-leading the 2006 Transcending Boundaries Conference, which brought together activists for Transgender, Bisexual, Intersex, Polyamorous, and Kink Rights. As a Professional Member of ASDAH (Association for Size Diversity and Health), Janie is guided by Health at Every Size and is passionate about making yoga accessible to all bodies and identities. Anne Lamott's son “called on” his mom after a transphobic tweet - Janie stumbled on this story after she questioned a colleague about sharing a Lamott's quote. Ganga discovered Lamott had publicly apologized, though the apology received little attention compared to the initial harm. Public Enemies, Private Friends - recommended by Janie's friend Marshall Miller, this documentary highlights dialogue between pro-choice and pro-life leaders in 1990s Boston. Accessible Yoga Podcast - hearing Jivana Heyman speak about his own activism and yoga inspired Janie to share her own perspective more openly. Ganga is deeply grateful to the colleagues and friends who supported their growth, including Stacy, Jyotika, Padma, Megha, her Anti-Racism for White Yoga Teachers book club, and all her students. Erin's back from her quick trip to NYC where she saw some theater and families wearing merch from punk rock bands you forgot about. Synopsis: Is Authoritarianism Here?: Gessen and Stanley discuss the shift in America's self-understanding, from democratic ideals to a self-identity based on loving the US for its past greatness, and warn that this is not a democratic project, but rather a fascist one, similar to what Putin is doing in Russia.Stay informed and engaged! Please hit the podcast subscribe button if you've yet to subscribe.Description: What will it take to reject fascism, before it's too late? Masha Gessen and Jason Stanley are two leading experts on autocracy, and they're sounding the alarm. They and their families have escaped totalitarian regimes and oppressive governments; today Gessen and Stanley are pulling back the curtain on the attacks against DEI, trans bodies, civil rights, higher education and more. Is authoritarianism here? Masha Gessen is an acclaimed Russian-American journalist, a Polk Award winning opinion writer for the New York Times and the author of "Surviving Autocracy" and “The Future is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia.” Forced to leave Russia twice, in 2024, a Moscow court convicted them, in absentia to eight years in prison for their reporting on the war in Ukraine. Jason Stanley is a best-selling author and professor whose books include “Erasing History” and "How Fascism Works". He recently left his teaching position at Yale University to relocate to Canada with his family; noting that he is a child of Jewish refugees who fled Nazi Germany. In this historic conversation — the first interview between Gessen and Stanley — the two explore how to be bold in our movements and envision a multi-ethnic democracy. Plus, a commentary from Laura.“Trump has proposed a revived empire, a return to an imaginary past. The Democrats have proposed the way things are now, which are deeply unsatisfying and horribly anxiety provoking for a very large number of people. So we need a vision of a future that is more appealing than the imaginary past.” - Masha Gessen“What I see now is this regime shifting the self understanding of America, from having these democratic ideals . . . God knows they've been imperfect, to a self identity as loving the United States because we've had these great men in our past, and we've conquered the West, and we can punch you in the nose. And that's not a democratic project. That's like what Putin is doing in Russia.” - Jason Stanley• Masha Gessen: Opinion Columnist, The New York Times; Author, Surviving Autocracy; Distinguished Professor, Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, CUNY• Jason Stanley: Author, Erasing History & How Fascism Works; Professor, Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto Music Credit: “America” by Sylvan Paul, courtesy of Wolf+Lamb Records. Today, we’re bringing you the best from the KUOW Newsroom… Transgender people in Washington’s state prisons are still fighting for better treatment, years after the Department of Corrections agreed to make changes. Now that Congress has cut funding for the federal food assistance program SNAP, hundreds of thousands of Washingtonians who use the program are trying to figure out what this means for them. And even after 50 years, Dungeons and Dragons is still growing in popularity, thanks to “actual play podcasts” like Dimension 20, which stopped by Climate Pledge Arena last month.
