Live from downtown Watford City in the Flag Family Studios, Scott Hennen delivers a fiery and wide-ranging episode of What's On Your Mind. From jaw-dropping stories of retail theft at Home Depot to Fargo Police Chief Dave Zibolski deep dive into sentencing failures and motorcycle mayhem, this episode doesn't hold back. Plus, Senate Majority Leader David Hogue breaks down the highs and lows of the just-completed legislative session—including why school choice hit another roadblock and why a seemingly small “cell phone ban” in schools might change education as we know it. Finally, Scott is joined by author Sal Di Leo, whose journey from orphanhood to inspirational speaker will absolutely stop you in your tracks. His message on forgiveness and gratitude? Unmissable. ⏱️ Standout Moments with Timestamps: [1:20] - “Blatant Theft at Home Depot” Scott shares a listener's unbelievable account of a man trying to return stolen power tools with no receipt—and the shocking response from store employees. [4:14] - “Shoplifting in NYC vs. Fargo” Scott recounts his real-life New York CVS theft story and draws disturbing parallels to Midwestern crime. [6:13] - “Motorcycle Menace and the Quality of Life Decline” A T-bone crash and nonstop noise have Scott and Chief Zibolski fired up about "crotch rockets" and property values. [9:08] - “The Revolving Door of Justice” Chief Zibolski confirms that violent repeat offenders are slipping through the system—and Scott calls the justice system “broken.” [13:57] - “Why Cops Can't Arrest Shoplifters in North Dakota” The chief gives a frank explanation of state law handcuffs that frustrate store owners and officers alike. [18:50] - “A New Tool for Law Enforcement” Zibolski reveals a new owner-liability bill that allows police to hold car owners accountable for reckless or fleeing drivers. [54:04] - “Truck Full of Flags and American Pride” Jim the Flagpole Guy joins in with a heartfelt report on patriotism across the prairie—and a job opening if you're feeling handy. [1:18:07] - “Gratitude, Forgiveness, and a Life Rebuilt” Sal DeLeo, author of Did I Ever Thank You, Sister?, shares his powerful journey from orphan to grateful survivor—and previews the upcoming movie based on his life.

This week it's time to talk about love... Now, I know what you're thinking. Who am I to talk about love when all I seem to be interested in are firey, passionate, fleeting moments on a dancefloor? Well, yeah, you've probably got a point there.... So, it's a good job that this is a conversation podcast and I have a guest to show me the way! And who is that guest? Why it is the author Neil Laird, who is currently promoting his new book 'Prime Time Travelers: a satirical MM Adventure', to tell us all about when he met his husband at the long-gone Caribou Coffee Shop in Chicago's gay village (often referred to as Boystown). And you'll be pleased to hear that I demonstrate a smidgen of growth here, asking questions and trying to understand this love phenomenon and what it all means... (baby steps! I'm getting there!) Want the SCOOP & UNEDITED Visual Timeline for ALL The Dichotomy Diaries Episodes AND MORE?... Click below. You won't want to miss how Season One ENDS... PATREON IS LIVE!!! and MERCH IS LIVE!!! TRIGGER WARNING: This episode of The Dichotomy Diaries discusses sexual assault in detail. If this topic is triggering for you, please take care of yourself and consider skipping this episode. Dear Diary (& Listeners), The past few months have been a serious struggle for me. I've been dragging my feet on wrapping up Season 1 of the podcast, stuck in this frustrating writers' block. No matter what I did, I just couldn't get the creative juices flowing like I used to, keeping me up late into the night creating for you all. I think I know what sparked the shift, but it's still a bit confusing. I reconnected with someone who just gets my brain. Being around him feels amazing—safe, even. It's like all the overthinking noise in my head quieted down for a change. But here's the thing: I need challenges in my life to stay motivated. I thrive on goals to work toward every day. This podcast was that challenge for me. But as Season 1 wrapped up and I got to the final interview, I looked around and thought, “WTF? This is too easy now.” And you know what? The most unexpected challenge I found was in my own head. My new relationship is healthy and fulfilling, but I'm literally challenging my traumatized brain every day not to go off the deep end and screw it all up. Can you imagine that feeling? Being completely happy and fulfilled, yet your brain is like, “ABORT! Everyone's a liar!” It's a wild ride. Here's the thing I didn't know: there are people out there who see you struggling, who actually help and affirm your feelings, and who can take a horrible situation born from trauma and make it better. Yep, not worse—better. So, that brings me to why I'm sharing what I'm sharing today. I'm going to take you back to something that happened to me about 11 years ago. It was traumatic then, and it still is to think about (I definitely had a few mini panic attacks while recording this—watch it on YouTube if you want to see how wild it was). I'll walk you through one of my first Tinder dates, back when it was the hottest dating app out there. As I always say, shame has no home inside me. I made some bad choices that put me in danger, and I need to own up to that. I want to share it with you so you can see, 1) we all make mistakes, 2) how serious those mistakes can be, 3) what you can do to avoid them, and 4) the tools you need to stay safe in this crazy dating world. Maybe it's because I feel safe, seen, and truly loved right now, but I really want to get this off my chest. I'm not going to lie, though—this is rough. It's graphic, and if you have any issues with content related to sexual assault, I suggest you skip this episode. As always, thanks for giving me a place to be 100% myself. Thank you for listening to me without judgment. You all keep me going. Oh, and PS: I'm so glad to be back on the mic. Forever Sharing My Truth, Amanda WE ARE ACTIVELY LOOKING FOR SEASON TWO'S STORY! Kane Hansen, the Founder and Managing Director of True North Lifestyle & Academy, has been someone who hasn't let his past dictate his future. He grew up in a low-income household with a single mother and multiple siblings, with his early years marked by significant challenges, including his parents' divorce and his mother's cancer diagnosis. Despite the challenges and obstacles, Kane moved through tough situations and a rollercoaster journey, which included being educated at the Original Boys' Town (now Dunlea Centre) in Sydney, a secondary school for disadvantaged youths. At Boys' Town, he learned essential life skills, practiced discipline and routine and formed his core values. Kane's journey into the financial world was unconventional. After a series of unfulfilling jobs, he left Sydney to work in a mine in the Northern Territory. During this time, he immersed himself in financial books, upskilling and boosting his knowledge as well as moonlighting as a stock trader, gaining hands-on experience and self-education in financial management. In 2010, seeking to formalize his knowledge, he completed a Diploma of Financial Planning. This led him to leave his high-paying job to pursue a career as a financial adviser. He quickly gained employment with a successful financial practice, where his innovative approach and client-focused strategies set him apart from the rest. After a desire to continue his progression and really help as many people as he could, he started and founded his own practice, True North Lifestyle in 2015. Through True North Lifestyle, Kane helps people from all walks of life take control of their finances and build their dream lives. His focus on smart money management and creating financial freedom resonates with many clients. His passion to make financial strategies and knowledge as accessible to as many people as possible, in 2023, he founded True North Academy, an education platform aimed at teaching everything from basic budgeting to advanced financial strategies. His goal is to improve financial literacy and empower individuals to win at the money game. Kane has a deep gratitude for where he's come from and where he is now so as soon as he was able to, he involved himself with giving back, firstly with his old school, the Dunlea Centre (nee Boys Town) as a Foundational Board Member and also with PCYC and Project Youth. Kane's vision and ultimate goal is to build a retreat for disadvantaged youths, offering them a safe place to set clear goals, develop strong values and learn practical life skills. As a loving fiancé and now Dad, Kane has a deep appreciation for life and continues to learn and grow. He has just authored his own book, "Find Your True North" and shares within this episode many of his reflections on life, his passion for helping youth and his knowledge and experience in finance. Dr. Chris McGinnis joins me in Session 266 to talk about his work in Primary Care Behavioral Pediatrics. If you're not sure what that is, don't worry. We go over that right away and learn that this area of work sits in an important and underserved niche: The niche between the general behavioral advice dispensed by pediatricians, and intensive treatment for serious mental health challenges. In a way, this conversation expands on something that Pat Friman brought up in our most recent interview: The idea that BCBAs are uniquely suited to provide families with this type of care. In order to provide direction to those who are interested in doing just this, Chris recently published Introduction to Primary Care Behavioral Pediatrics: A Guide for Behavior Analysts. In our conversation, we covered: · His background in Behavioral Pediatrics, including his work at BoysTown (and meeting Pat Friman for the first time). · The motivation for writing his book. · The reification of psychological terms (see Skinner '45). · The myth of the Chemical Imbalance Hypothesis. · The range of behavior challenges he sees in his practice. · Thoughts on caregiver adherence. · The pros and cons of reimbursement practices, including the concierge model he has currently adopted. · Chris' study of Trauma-Informed Care. · Permissive vs. Authoritative, and how those related to adolescent mental health.... In other words, why parenting is like The Marshmallow Test. · Advice for the newly-minted BCBA. This podcast is brought to you by the following: Please welcome our newest sponsor, The New England Center for Children! Yeah I don't know what the fuck was in the giggle water this week but this is a particularly cracked out episode lmfao WELCUM 2 THE JUNGLE! The girls return to discuss matters of utmost importance with international implications. As we pregame for the Nicki Minaj concert and spread our passports wet 'n' wide for entry to Gag City, we pay ten dollars to get in the ball and take a closer look at what the world is up to... First, we discuss the rates of LGBTness among Gen Z high schoolers, and the New York Times (I think? LOL) report that it's mostly girls saying that they are bisexual. Then, we discuss the Normal Middle Class Guy TikTok and unpack what makes straight men so drawn to the grindset. Last but CERTAINLY not least, we unpack the imminent opening of JOHNSON'S the male strip bar set to replace Berlin in Boystown, and the fuming gogo boys involved. Pretty messy! Missing but not forgotten LGBTQ person is Aaron Cody Fortner. 31 year old Kevin Clewer was on a night out with his friend John. The two men were bar hopping in the Boystown gayborhood of Chicago in March of 2004. Kevin would leave John at one of the bars as he left with a young man who called himself Fernando. Kevin's body would be found in his apartment by his father the following evening. The case has gone cold and has some eerie similarities to the case of Phillip DiMartino, who I covered just a few episodes ago. True Crime Quickie is from Canada. When your life story is dominated by trauma resulting from one fucked-up thing after another, it plays a nasty trick on your definition of what's “fine”.After surviving being killed almost three times before she was two years old, Sonia Graham was adopted into a strict Puerto Rican / Irish Catholic family. Her father was in the Air Force, so while she developed resilience to deal with ever-changing situations, she did NOT learn how to create lasting relationships because she knew whatever friends she made, she would not have for very long.Because of her extensive behavioral issues, her parents eventually put her into Boys Town. The bigger issue was that she had PTSD from her childhood traumas, and in the 80s, PTSD was misunderstood. As a result, Sonia was treated with psychiatric drugs rather than the proper treatment. So, as an adult, she hesitated to seek the therapy she needed, which prolonged her suffering. All this instilled one of Sonia's core values – at the end of the day, the only person you really have is you, so you have to be true to you. After she got out of Boys Town, she graduated high school early, then had her first child at age 18. Six years later she was pregnant again. Then at age 27, she married, divorced, and remarried – all in one year.Sonia's husbands, like her father, were in the military, so she went back to the pattern of moving around. After the family moved to Maryland, she became a Realtor. Then she got divorced again. She discovered her passion for teaching and found a unique niche helping Maryland Realtors learn the business side of real estate, beyond simply getting a license. All in all, everything seemed fine.Until her teenage son tried to murder her.Indeed, Fine is a 4-Letter Word.In a moment, when you meet Sonia, you'll discover her quest for what she calls “living in beige”. When your life is dominated by trauma and violence, with occasional good things such as finding your niche in your career and excelling at it, you just don't see the middle.Sonia's hype song is “The Greatest” by Sia.Resources:Sonia Graham's websites: https://www.simplemovesgroup.com/ and https://soniagraham.jpar.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sonia-graham-7060b442/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SoniaMaria1980 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sold_with_sonia X (formerly Twitter): https://x.com/SoniaMGraham1The movie mentioned in the episode is called "Inside Out".Invitation from Lori:Like Sonia, it's possible you're not “fine” because trauma is the only thing you really understand – as a result, trauma itself becomes your “fine”.If you want to start changing the coding in your brain so you can see past the trauma and find the beige, the 5 Easy Ways to Start Living The Sabbatical Life guide is for you.Once you read it, you'll ✅ Discover a counter-intuitive approach to making intentional changes in mindset and lifestyle.✅ Learn how to own your...

In this episode, Rylie Heck and Sofia Scher interview Pam Heck and Brian Heck. They discuss topics surrounding fostering with biological children and how to foster a strong family dynamic. Brian and Pam met in college and came from completely different backgrounds. Pam was raised in a two parent home. Brian's parents were divorced when he was just an infant and his mother remarried. He jumped between mom and dad's house throughout his childhood. Through divine intervention, they ended up at the same college with the same group of friends. Through many years of friendship they married in 2004. They welcomed their daughter, Rylie, to the world in 2007 and their son, Cason in 2011. Pam and Brian both had careers in helping people. Pam was a director of In Home Family Services for Boys Town. She led a team of consultants who worked with families to intervene and to help prevent their children from going into foster care. Brian was a teacher. He worked in a Title 1 school with kids with severe behavior problems that were voted “most likely not to succeed.” Even though they were helping kids, they had a desire to work together and in a different setting. An opportunity arose for them to become family teachers for Boys Town in Tallahassee, Florida. They would be responsible for their two children as well as 6 teenage boys who were in foster care. They had a home setting with their family, while also teaching life skills to be successful in the future. This was an incredible opportunity that will forever impact Brian and Pam as well as Rylie and Cason. They stepped away from family teaching a few years ago in order to focus their time and attention on their biological children.
