Turning Towards Life - a Thirdspace podcast

We begin with Rick Rubin's “The Prism of Self”. A conversation about the welcome and unwelcome, our inner multitudinousness, bringing forward what's been in the shadows, discernment, and how art and open conversation can make room in our lives for more of the vast complexity we each are. This week is hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. This is Turning Towards Life, a weekly live 30 minute conversation hosted by Thirdspace in which Justin Wise and Lizzie Winn dive deep into big questions of human living. It may be impossible. We inhabit many different versions of a changing self. The suggestion to be yourself may be too general to be of much use. There's being yourself as an artist, being yourself with your family, being yourself at work, being yourself with friends, being yourself in times of crisis or in times of peace, and being yourself for yourself, when by yourself. In addition to these environmental variations, we are also always changing within. Our moods, our energy level, the stories we tell ourselves, our prior experiences, how hungry or tired we are: All these variants create a new way of being in each moment.Depending on who we're with, where we are, and how safe or challenged we feel, we are changing all the time. Moving between different aspects of self.We may have one aspect that wants to be more bold or subversive, which wrestles with our more agreeable, conflict-avoidant self. There may be a dreamer aspect, aspiring to inhabit vast magnificent worlds, at odds with our pragmatic side that questions our ability to make our dreams real. There is a constant negotiation occurring between these various aspects. And each time we tune in to a particular one, different choices result, changing the outcome of our work.In a prism, a single beam of light enters and is broken into an array of colors. The self, too, is a prism. Neutral events enter, and are transformed into a spectrum of feelings, thoughts, and sensations. All this information is processed distinctively by each aspect of self, refracting life's light in its own way, and emitting different shades of art.For this reason, not every work can reflect all of our selves. Perhaps it's never possible, no matter how hard we try. Instead, we might embrace the prism of self, and keep allowing reality to bend uniquely through us.Like a kaleidoscope, we can adjust the aperture on our vision and change the results. We may aim to work from one particular aspect, like taking on a character, and create something from our darkest self or our most spiritual self. Those two works won't be the same, but they both come from us and they would both be true colors. The more we accept our prism-like nature, the more free we become to create in different colors and the more we trust the inconsistent instincts we hold while making art.We don't have to know why something is good or wonderful, if it's the “right” decision or if it reflects us accurately. It is simply the light our prism emits naturally at this moment in time.Rick Rubinfrom ‘The Creative Act'Photo by Ruan Richard Rodrigues on UnsplashJoin Our Weekly Mailing: www.turningtowards.life/subscribeSupport Us: www.buymeacoffee.com/turningtowardslife---Join Us Live in 2026Foundations of Integral Development Coaching, led by Lizzie and JustinSept 9-10 2026, Online, Book HereOur two-day immersive introduction to integral development coaching, led by Lizzie and Justin from Turning Towards Life. Turning Towards Life - a Thirdspace podcast

We begin with Ella Dessington's poem “Where Words Kneel” and reflect on freedom, trust, safety, belonging and the limits of language. How language is always provisional, changing as we use it and inquire into its meanings. How fixed definitions can distance us from our living experience, and how relationships can remain alive through return, listening, apology, openness and the willingness to let one another change. An invitation to slow down, question what's certain and stay with ourselves and one another until language becomes gentle and humble enough to meet experience. This week is hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. This is Turning Towards Life, a weekly live 30 minute conversation hosted by Thirdspace in which Justin Wise and Lizzie Winn dive deep into big questions of human living. Dr. Louise Steel is an archaeologist whose work focuses on challenging colonial interpretations of Cypriot history by emphasizing the agency of the local population. Through postcolonial theory, she encourages a re-evaluation of Cyprus not as a passive recipient of outside influence, but as an active participant in Bronze Age interconnectivity--especially through trade and cultural exchange. She uses the concept of the "Third Space" to frame Cyprus as a dynamic cultural middle ground, particularly during the Late Bronze Age, when the island thrived through the copper trade and maintained complex, often peaceful, relationships with powers like Egypt. Dr. Steel highlights Enkomi as a prime example of this hybridity: a site marked by elite tombs, Egyptian imports like scarabs and broad collars, and signs of status and identity shaped through interaction rather than domination. Her work invites further inquiry into how material culture reveals the identities and social lives of Cypriots in this pivotal era.

It is our amazing capacity to be affected by the incredible richness and complexity of the relational web in which we live… Relational power includes three components: (1) the ability to be actively open and affected by the world around us; (2) the ability to create ourselves out of what we have taken in; and (3) the ability to influence those around us by first having been affected by them… Everything actual exercises some power - either to affect or be affected. [But] there is a crucial, life-shaping difference between the power to control others and the strength that enables us to be active and open to the world around us. There is an equally vital difference between the power to control others by shutting them out of our lives and the power to engage the lives of others in ways that enrich us all… The world of the individual who can be influenced by another without losing his or her identity or freedom is larger than the world of the individual who fears being influenced. The stature of the individual who can let another exist in her or his own creative freedom is larger than the size of the individual who insists that others must conform to their own purposes and understandings. From Process Relational Philosophy, Chapter 8 on ‘Relational Power',by C Robert MeslePhoto by Yuri Antonenko on Unsplash---Join Us Live in 2026Foundations of Integral Development Coaching, led by Lizzie and JustinSept 9-10 2026, Online, Book HereOur two-day immersive introduction to integral development coaching, led by Lizzie and Justin from Turning Towards Life. What does an institution built in the 1820s have to teach us about designing for the future? Dr Caroline Butler-Bowdon has spent two decades moving through museums, historic houses and public space, and now leads the State Library of NSW into its 200th year. In this episode, Caroline talks with Vince about the library as one of the last true third spaces, somewhere people come to be alone together. She unpacks why trust and human connection sit at the heart of public institutions, what the data says about belonging and wellbeing, and why the resurgence of physical books and slow reading isn't nostalgia, it's a response to digital exhaustion. The conversation also covers Caroline's own career, from a PhD written between naps with a newborn, to a Churchill Fellowship that changed how she thinks about public space, to a hard-won Instagram detox. Turning Towards Life - a Thirdspace podcast

When we're in difficulty, or people who matter to us are in difficulty, we often rush to find out how to make the problem go away. That's just fine for some issues we face... for example just before recording today's episode we had to fix an audio issue which would have prevented us getting this episode out. But many other kinds of difficulties are not so amenable to such an approach and, in any case, trying the 'fix' them might mean having to exile part of ourselves, or treat something that is deep and poetic as if it were shallow and trivial. So instead of trying to 'cure' an issue we face, Thomas Moore's source this weeks invites us into an ethic of 'care', in which we "might take the time to watch and listen as gradually it reveals the deeper mysteries lying within daily turmoil. Problems and obstacles offer a chance for reflection that otherwise would be precluded by the swift routine of life." This week is hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. This is Turning Towards Life, a weekly live 30 minute conversation hosted by Thirdspace in which Justin Wise and Lizzie Winn dive deep into big questions of human living. Find us on FaceBook to join in the lively conversation on this episode. You can find videos of every episode, and more about the project on the Turning Towards Life website, and you can also watch and listen on Instagram, YouTube, and as a podcast in all the usual podcast places. Our source for this week:Care vs CureA major difference between care and cure is that cure implies the end of trouble. If you are cured, you don't have to worry about whatever was bothering you any longer. But care has a sense of ongoing attention. There is no end. Conflicts may never be fully resolved. Your character will never change radically, although it may go through some interesting transformations. Awareness can change, of course, but problems may persist and never go away. Our work in psychology would change remarkably if we thought about it as ongoing care rather than as the quest for a cure. We might take the time to watch and listen as gradually it reveals the deeper mysteries lying within daily turmoil. Problems and obstacles offer a chance for reflection that otherwise would be precluded by the swift routine of life. As we stop to consider what is happening to us and what we're made of, the soul ferments, to use an alchemical word. Change takes place, but not according to plan or as the result of intentional intervention. If you attend the soul closely enough, with an educated and steadfast imagination, changes take place without your being aware of them until they are all over and well in place. Care of the soul observes the paradox whereby a muscled, strong-willed pursuit of change can actually stand in the way of substantive transformation. The fitness internet is getting louder, meaner, and weirder, and it's exhausting. Today Mike flies solo and says the quiet part out loud: platforms don't reward the most helpful coach, they reward the most shareable fear. If your feed is full of seed oil panic, sunscreen paranoia, “miracle” peptides, and comment-section cruelty, you're not imagining the shift. We talk through what that does to real people trying to lose weight or get in shape, especially beginners who already feel exposed. Mike breaks down why fitness is one of the only “learning” spaces where newcomers get mocked for not already being good, and why that ugliness rarely shows up the same way in real life. The fix is not another hack. It's community, context, and a return to human-to-human communication. So we get practical and concrete: Third Space is evolving into more in-person connection, including walks, runs, hikes, and a sanctioned 5K planned for mid-November around World Kindness Day. Mike also shares a big long-term vision: building a physical gym location targeted for early 2027, plus “Project Lifeboat,” a push to move people off fragile algorithms and into more stable resources like groups and newsletters. Along the way, he shares a run-club story, how to test your baseline safely, and why “week one shouldn't look very different from week zero.”If you're tired of the noise but still want real progress, hit play, subscribe, and share this with someone who needs a kinder path. When our lives change in an instant, when we find ourselves in relational difficulty, when circumstances shift and we no longer understand what to do... what then? In this week's source, Ingrid Goff-Maidoff invites us to trust the inherent openness and holding power of our hearts as both a support and as a pathway. And that's our conversation this week - how to we learn to trust the many-chambered heart that was given to each of us without our having to do a single thing? And what might it be to respond to the hugeness of life, with all its intense joys and searing difficulties, with the qualities that our hearts can bring? This week is hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. This is Turning Towards Life, a weekly live 30 minute conversation hosted by Thirdspace in which Justin Wise and Lizzie Winn dive deep into big questions of human living. Donatella Caggiano was living in a Best Western while her flooded apartment got fixed when she watched a SWAT team raid a neighbouring house to catch a fugitive. She caught herself rooting for the person running and then realised she was the person running. Donatella accepted the hint her body and the universe were giving then drove to her office that morning and quit. The job she walked away from was a corporate role she had stayed in through a merger and acquisition that kept her and her team in the dark, and left everyone working in an unfinished office surrounded by moving boxes for months. The message was clear long before the layoffs: stop investing. Stop expecting. Just wait. The hotel window was Donatella's accidental third space — the room outside both home and work where she could finally see herself. She now designs that room intentionally, for teams. She helps organisations have conversations the office wasn't built for, to rebuild belonging in places where gratitude is demanded and silence is rewarded. We talked about why grief gets skipped when organisations change, what happens to a team when a leader hands back agency instead of holding the line, and what four haircuts taught her about leading through change.Links to learn more about Donatella Caggiano:WebsiteLinkedInNewsletterSubstackPodcastAny thoughts? How much of each us gets excluded when we constantly compare ourselves to one another, and to the expectations we're handed by our culture.  And how much we exclude the gifts of others by the very same process. Is there a way we could give up inappropriate comparison and in so doing learn to include so much more everyone's talents and gifts, and the supportive ground of life itself? In this conversation we talk about different kinds of learning, mischief, the attitudes we take that portray us as 'better than' or 'worse than' others, and what it is to deeply and gladly welcome the many kinds of difference and intelligence that are available in the world. This week's Turning Towards Life is from May 2023, remixed and represented as we are in the midst of teaching the final session of this year's Professional Coaching Course. Some people have the patience to sit with the right problem instead of fixing the wrong one. They ask the question that actually needs asking, don't accept our stories at face value, and get to the real thing waiting to be said. They see what we're actually struggling with, not the account we offer. They are quiet, patient, kind, curious, and deep enough for us to speak about what matters. They know when to wait and when to act. This capacity lives between and within us. It can grow and be practiced. Inspired by William Martin's poem ‘Journey's End', we wonder together about what it would be to each receive the one, precious, unique life that we are rather than trying all the time to be something or someone else. What happens when we let ourselves soften into receiving everything that has, since the beginning of time, led directly to each of us, seeing ourselves and one another as the sacred presences that we are? And what might the words of someone towards the end of their life offer us to help us do that? If you’ve ever felt stuck in a loop (work, home, repeat), this conversation is for you. Julia Romanova brings an unusually human-centred lens to how we navigate change. In this episode, Julia introduces two powerful frameworks that reframe how we relate to ourselves, our colleagues, and the world around us. Radical Connectedness is the idea that we each exist across three interconnected dimensions (personal, group, and societal). When you recognise them, you stop taking things personally, you build more resilient teams, and you start acting with greater awareness. The Third Space is something we’ve quietly lost in modern working life. It’s not work. It’s not home. It’s the place where you reconnect with who you actually are, and without it we struggle to recover our energy and feel increasingly trapped.A sharp, practical conversation for anyone navigating modern work. Our Guest: Julia Romanova Julia Romanova is a Berlin-based communication strategist, trainer, and change facilitator with over 15 years of experience at the intersection of politics, business, and society. Currently working in corporate communications and change management, she specialises in transformation communication, helping organisations not just navigate change, but make it land with the people it affects most. With a background spanning German Association for SMEs, StartUps, and her own practice as a Rational Games Trainer for organisations like Microsoft, the German Foreign Office, and ESMT, Julia brings a rare blend of strategic thinking, creativity and human-centred communication. Her academic background in linguistics, a diploma in acting and certifications in Change Management (IHK) and Leadership gives her a uniquely embodied understanding of how people connect, resist, and transform. We're unable to record a new episode this week so we have remixed the sound and video on one of our favourites, from 2022, about a topic that we're thinking about a lot right now - time. So often our lives are ruled by 'clock time' - we're counting off how long there is to get something done, or we're aiming for a time-bound goal, or we're measuring time wasted or time used productively. But although this is the dominant way of understanding time for many of us, it is only one way of relating to the flow of things. What if, instead of filling time with work or play, we turned things around and allowed time to flow into our activity? And what if instead of trying to secure ourselves against an unpredictable future, we took up a playfulness with the unfolding of time itself? A conversation about living into our lives as an infinite unfolding, rather than a finite game.  This week's Turning Towards Life is hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. This is Turning Towards Life, a weekly live 30 minute conversation hosted by Thirdspace in which Justin Wise and Lizzie Winn dive deep into big questions of human living. You can find videos of every episode, and more about the project on the Turning Towards Life website, and you can also watch and listen on Instagram, YouTube, and as a podcast in all the usual podcast places. Our source for this week:What Is Time? There are two kinds of games. One could be called finite, the other infinite. A finite game is played for the purpose of winning, an infinite game for the purpose of continuing the play…For an infinite player there is no such thing as an hour of time. There can be an hour of love, or a day of grieving, or a season of learning, or a period of labour. An infinite player does not begin working for the purpose of filling up a period of time with work, but for the purpose of filling work with time. Work is not a way of passing time but engendering possibility. Work is not a way of arriving at a desired present and securing it against an unpredictable future but of moving towards a future that itself has a future.[So] infinite players cannot say how much they have completed in their work or love or quarrelling, but only that much remains incomplete in it. This week, the Canopy staff have a dialogue around the practice of simplicity. They touch on how simplicity confronts our desire to control and our patterns of worry. The invitation of Jesus reminds us to slow down and to become available and attentive to His presence.

Turning Towards Life - a Thirdspace podcast

What might become possible if, even for a moment, we let ourselves feel cherished… allowing ourselves to feel the care of others as a living presence in our bodies? And what happens to our way of being in the world when we use this as a doorway, returning us to connection, to belonging, to the quiet rhythm of being human together? In this episode, we turn toward a luminous poem by Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer, and into a conversation about imagination as a way to recover our capacities as we respond to the world. We explore what it means to remember we are held, how that remembrance changes the way we meet one another, and why it may be more foolish not to imagine a world that can be shaped by our care. Along the way, we find ourselves asking: if even one of us begins to live as though we are cherished, what kind of ripple might that set in motion? This week's Turning Towards Life is hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace.Episode Overview00:00 Introduction and Community Engagement03:33 The Power of Imagination10:08 Cherishment and Connection17:12 The Ripple Effect of Cherishment22:14 Choosing Connection Over Isolation30:20 Creating Community SpacesThis is Turning Towards Life, a weekly live 30 minute conversation hosted by Thirdspace in which Justin Wise and Lizzie Winn dive deep into big questions of human living. What if we let ourselves linger in this moment of connection? What might happen insideeach body? What might happen in the world as in unison our breaths begin to even and slow? Wouldthe pulsing of our hearts begin to synch, the way heart cells in a petri dish come to keep time witheach other? What is earth if not a great experiment in which we are all both observer and observed? How long could it last, this rhythmic communion between jailor and prisoner, oppressor andoppressed, between fighter and fighter, maker and destroyer, parent and child, liar and believer, all ofus thinking of love? Foolish, perhaps, to imagine such impossible moments. But more foolish not toimagine such things. Even now, I'm thinking of someone. On today's show, we recorded live on location at the Mississippi Museum of Art during Third Space JXN's Soulfood Sunday event this April with our guest, Third Space founder Aisha Carson. We find out what it actually takes to build intentional community in a city that deserves to see itself celebrated. Her belief is rooted simply in this: that narrative change is where all other change begins, and that when people start experiencing their city differently, they start talking about it differently, too. By choosing integrity, I become more whole, but wholeness does not mean perfection. It means becoming more real by acknowledging the whole of who I am. Identity and integrity are not the granite from which fictional heroes are hewn. They are subtle dimensions of the complex, demanding, and lifelong process of self-discovery.  Identity lies in the intersection of the diverse forces that make up my life, and integrity lies in relating to those forces in ways that bring me wholeness and life rather than fragmentation and death.Parker Palmer, from ‘The Courage to Teach'Photo by Dalelan Anderson on Unsplash   ‍---Join Us Live in 2026Professional Coaching Course, begins July 2-5 2026, OnlineOur year long programme, an opportunity to learn to support others in deep, life giving discovery and development. You can hear us talk about the programme here:www.turningtowards.life/coachingAnd you can read more about it here:www.wearethirdspace.org/professional-coaching-courseTurning Towards Life Live Season 3, from September 2026Our Turning Towards Life live programme of community, learning and reflection runs in six month seasons, in person on Zoom once a month. Stronger Together: How Baby Booty Is Redefining Parenthood Fitness In this episode of the Boulos Beat, guest host Sasha Phillips sits down with Molly DeLong Brubaker to discuss how she transformed her background in startup marketing and her experience as a new mom into Baby Booty—a fitness and community platform designed for parents. What began during COVID as virtual workouts quickly evolved into in-person classes, built around a simple idea: parents need a space where they can work out, connect, and show up as they are—without leaving their babies behind. Baby Booty blends functional fitness with real-life parenting, offering classes where children are welcome and community is central. Each session combines a workout with dedicated time for connection, creating a supportive “third space” for parents to rebuild strength and identity. The business has grown largely through word-of-mouth, with many instructors coming from within the community, reinforcing its authentic and deeply personal culture. A key part of their conversation also highlights the real estate journey behind the brand's growth. Molly shares how moving from pop-up classes to a permanent studio required finding a space with easy access, ample parking, and a welcoming layout suited for parents with young children. With her first location in Portland and a second in Massachusetts, she reflects on navigating different markets, negotiating leases, and adapting spaces to fit her vision. As she explores expansion in southern Maine and considers franchising, real estate strategy remains central to scaling Baby Booty's unique community-driven model.

The people we live with or meet with, the animals that help us with our farm work, the soil we till, the materials we shape, the tools we use, they all contain a mysterious spiritual substance which depends on us for helping it towards its pure form, its perfection. If we neglect this spiritual substance sent across our path, if we think only in terms of momentary purposes, without developing a genuine relationship to the beings and things in whose life we ought to take part, as they in ours, then we shall ourselves be debarred from true, fulfilled existence. It is my conviction that this doctrine is essentially true. The highest culture of the soul remains basically arid and barren unless, day by day, waters of life pour forth into the soul from those little encounters to which we give their due; the most formidable power is intrinsically powerless unless it maintains a secret covenant with these contacts, both humble and helpful, with strange, and yet near, being.Martin BuberPhoto by Linh Pham on Unsplash---Join Us Live in 2026Professional Coaching Course, begins July 2-5 2026, OnlineOur year long programme, an opportunity to learn to support others in deep, life giving discovery and development. How can we love - people, life, the world - in a way that allows us to genuinely contribute? And how is that different from the kind of love that is really a strategy to have ourselves feel ok?  That second kind of love might be better understood as a way that we try to control life or other people - we'll love just as long as we get back exactly what we hoped for.  The first kind of love is wilder and more surprising and, as author Maria Popova says, the great wonder is ‘how it continues to hold as it continues to change'. This week's Turning Towards Life is hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace.Episode Overview00:00 Introduction to Turning Towards Life Podcast04:23 Exploring the Source: Maria Popova's Poem06:17 The Nature of Love and Neediness12:45 Distinguishing Love from Control19:41 Loving Kindness as a Disposition27:47 The Essence of Lovingness31:31 Reflections on Love in Today's WorldThis is Turning Towards Life, a weekly live 30 minute conversation hosted by Thirdspace in which Justin Wise and Lizzie Winn dive deep into big questions of human living. What if one of the most powerful things you could do for your health had nothing to do with what's on your plate—and everything to do with where you spend your time? Not more time at home.
