What happens when a physicist experiences a moment of transcendence that science cannot explain?Alan Lightman has spent much of his life exploring the mysteries of the universe—from black holes and the nature of time to the fundamental laws that govern reality. A physicist, novelist and longtime professor at MIT, he's fascinated by the transformative power of awe and wonder. In this live conversation recorded at New York's Morgan Library, Lightman reflects on extraordinary encounters in nature—from a startling moment with two ospreys to a solitary night beneath the stars—that shook him to the core and left him feeling as though he had somehow "fallen into infinity." Calling himself a "spiritual materialist," he seeks to bridge the divide between science and religion, between mathematics and art.Can a scientific worldview make room for awe, transcendence, and mystical experience? Lightman says these fleeting moments reveal something essential about being human: our longing to connect with something larger than ourselves. This event at the Morgan Library was co-sponsored by the Nour Foundation as part of our series “Spirituality in the Age of Science: Conversations on God, Transcendence and Mortality.”— Video of Steve's complete conversation with Alan Lightman at Morgan Library:  MIT website Books PBS series: "Searching: Our Quest For Meaning in the Age of Science"  —0:00 Introduction2:40 The Osprey Encounter9:40 Science And Religion13:30 Scientist And Novelist28:50 The Religious Impulse36:50 Evolution And Consciousness Wonder Cabinet is hosted by Anne Strainchamps and Steve Paulson. Welcome to the Daily Bitachon: Erev Shabbat Edition The Shulchan Aruch tells us in Siman Reish-Samech (260) that one should cut their nails on Friday afternoon. Simply speaking, cutting one's nails on Friday afternoon is Kevod Shabbat —it is showing respect for Shabbat. The Be'er Heitev , one of the commentaries on the side of the Shulchan Aruch , invokes the Gemara ( Niddah 17a) which tells us that one should not leave fingernails on the floor when they are cut. One should either burn them or bury them, but definitely not leave them out. What is the reason behind this? Why are fingernails dangerous? He tells us that before the sin of Adam HaRishon (the first man), man was cloaked in a clothing similar to a fingernail. That means his body and soul shone through this thin, translucent fingernail material. After man sinned, he was coated with the physical flesh that we have today. The Ben Ish Chai ( Parashat Bereshit ) says that originally it was Kotnot Or ( כותנות אור ) with an Alef —clothing of light—and it switched to Kotnot Or ( כותנות עור ) with an Ayin —clothing of skin and flesh. When Shabbat comes, we will see that Shabbat is all about going back to the state of man before the sin; the job of Shabbat is to lift us up above the sin. So, on Friday afternoon, we cut our nails to beautify them. We are going into Shabbat when our clothing is meant to be the cloth of nails—that is what it was supposed to be. The Transcendence of Shabbat and the Reality of Motzei Shabbat Then, on Motzei Shabbat , we look at our candle and we look at our fingernails. Why do we have a candle on Motzei Shabbat ? It is because God created fire on Motzei Shabbat . Why did God create fire on Motzei Shabbat ? What about Friday night? The answer is that when Adam sinned, there was a change in the light that God had created. Originally, God created a light which we call Or HaGanuz —the hidden light. It was a light through which you could see from one end of the world to the other. Because Adam sinned, God said that light was too dangerous to use because people could misuse it, so He hid that light away for the future. Today, we no longer have that light. When did that light disappear? On Motzei Shabbat . Out of respect for Shabbat, that original light stayed from Friday afternoon at twelve o'clock (when Adam was created) until Motzei Shabbat . So, it was lit for thirty-six hours. Motzei Shabbat is all about the consequences of the sin of Adam taking hold. We have that candle to remind us that we would not have needed artificial fire if not for the sin of Adam. We look at our fingernails to remind us that we should have been totally coated in that translucent material. Similarly, a woman is traditionally not supposed to drink from the Havdalah cup. Why not? Because there is an opinion that the Etz HaDa'at (the Tree of Knowledge) was a grapevine. Therefore, when Havdalah arrives, we do not want to remind anyone that Chavah (Eve) took from the grape when she was not supposed to, which could arouse a prosecution—a Kitrug . The Be'er Heitev explains that the Gemara says if a pregnant lady steps on discarded fingernails, it is dangerous for her pregnancy. Why? The answer he gives is that discarded nails remind us of the sin of Adam and Chavah. Originally, there was no such thing as a fingernail that you cut and discarded; your whole body was coated in it. These clippings remind us of the original sin, and the punishment of Chavah was difficulty in childbirth. We do not want an arousal of that sin, and therefore, a pregnant lady touching discarded fingernails becomes dangerous. The Power of Friday Afternoon Preparations Coming back to our main story, which is the positivity of Shabbat: Shabbat is all about bringing us back to Adam before the sin. The Sefer Chemdat Yamim tells us that the Erev Shabbat Friday afternoon preparation has the ability to atone for the sin that happened on that day. We also see this in a pasuk in Shemot 16:5: וְהָיָה בַּיּוֹם הַשִּׁשִּׁי וְהֵכִינוּ אֵת אֲשֶׁר־יָבִיאוּ וְהָיָה מִשְׁנֶה עַל אֲשֶׁר־יִלְקְטוּ יוֹם יוֹם "And it shall come to pass on the sixth day that they shall prepare what they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily." This refers to the Manna. They prepared on Friday, and they received a double portion. He tells us that the word Mishneh ( מִשְׁנֶה )—which means double, like shani —has the exact same letters as Neshamah ( נְשָׁמָה ). This hints to us that the preparation of Erev Shabbat causes us to be cleansed from the sin of Adam HaRishon , which brings down upon us the Neshamah Yeteirah (the extra soul) that we lost. The Neshamah Yeteirah symbolizes the level of man before his sin. Similarly, we say in the Shabbat prayers: Yismach Moshe be-matnat chelko ( יִשְׂמַח מֹשֶׁה בְּמַתְּנַת חֶלְקוֹ )—Moshe is happy with his portion. What does that mean? This might be a little complicated, and you might have to listen to this class twice! The commentators say that when we stood at Har Sinai, the negativity of the original sin disappeared. Adam HaRishon's sin was corrected, everything went back to the way it was meant to be, and we received two crowns on our heads. Those two crowns represent the same spiritual power as our extra Neshamah —the correction of Adam's sin. However, when we sinned with the Golden Calf, we lost those crowns. Who received them instead? Moshe Rabbeinu. And that is why his face shone. Every Shabbat, Moshe is kind enough— Yismach Moshe is very happy with his given portion—to give us back those crowns. Because on Shabbat, in a spiritual way, we return to the state of Adam before the sin, so we get our crowns back. Right after the end of Parashat Ki Tissa (which talks about Moshe Rabbeinu's face shining), the next Parashat , Vayakhel , starts immediately with Shabbat. The Ba'al HaTurim notes this connection because the Gemara says that a person's face looks different on Shabbat than it does during the week. We have a shining face on Shabbat because we are returning to that original Kotnot Or —the clothing of light. The Hidden Light and "Extra Credit" For some real extra credit: that light, as we said, is the light of the Or HaGanuz (the hidden light). That hidden light is symbolized by the Torah she-Ba'al Peh (the Oral Torah) that we toil over. Where did God hide the light? He hid the light in Torah she-Ba'al Peh —in the Mishnayot and the Gemara . That is why the word Neshamah ( נְשָׁמָה ) shares the exact same letters as Mishnah ( מִשְׁנָה ). The Mishnayot bring back that Neshamah Yeteirah ; they bring back that lost light. Again, that's extra credit—we're going a little into information overload here! The Bottom Line What is the practical takeaway from all of this? Through man's sin, he lost what he lost. But on Erev Shabbat, through our physical and spiritual preparations for Shabbat, we receive it all back once again. Then on Motzei Shabbat , we are reminded of what we lose until next week. Our nails—both cutting them on Friday and looking at them on Saturday night—are strongly connected to this profound message. But the main message is that Shabbat, which is what we are constantly working toward, lifts us up far above the sin of Adam HaRishon . The Chemdat Yamim further says that when man was originally placed in Gan Eden , he was given a positive commandment: l'ovdah ( לְעָבְדָהּ )—to serve it, and a negative commandment: u'lshomrah ( וּלְשָׁמְרָהּ )—to guard it. That is exactly why on Shabbat we have the positive commandment of Zachor (Remember) and the negative commandment of Shamor (Guard). He further notes that the beautiful clothing we wear on Shabbat is to remind us of those original spiritual garments. We see from so many different areas that Shabbat is designed to fix the sin of Adam HaRishon . I apologize if there was a bit too much Kabbalah and a lot of information at once, but I came across this recently and I just needed to share it with someone!

What's going on? Is this a reaction against thin, seeker-friendly evangelicalism? Spiritual nostalgia? Across the Western church, some younger Christians seem to be searching for deeper roots: tradition, transcendence, beauty, liturgy, sacraments and a stronger sense of connection with the historic church. Some evangelicals have become Roman Catholic or even Orthodox. Even a church formerly affiliated with the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches (FIEC) in the UK has become Orthodox.Orlando Saer, senior pastor of Christ Church Southampton, describes himself as something of a “spiritual mongrel”, shaped by Roman Catholic, high Anglican, low Anglican, independent Baptist and FIEC influences. On sabbatical in Australia, Orlando has been thinking deeply about why Christians are longing for rootedness, transcendence and tradition, and how evangelical leaders should respond.Anglican AidTo find out more about supporting Anglican Aid. That description certainly applies to this week's subject. First she was Alice McLeod, a single Black woman working on the jazz circuit in New York, Paris, and her home city of Detroit. Then she was Alice Coltrane, John's muse and partner in free jazz exploration. After John passed at the height of the Summer of Love, Alice was called first to India, then California on a spiritual journey; establishing her own ashram as Swamini Turiyasangitananda. Pursuing just one of these life paths would be remarkable. In just 69 years, Alice somehow pursued all three; transcending all limitations placed on her, internal and external. Dr. John Vervaeke
William Desmond and John Vervaeke: Strong Transcendence, Plato, and the Between

Dr. John Vervaeke

Play Episode Listen Later May 28, 2026 97:11

Can transcendence still make philosophical sense after modernity? John Vervaeke speaks with philosopher William Desmond about Platonism as a living tradition, the meaning of strong transcendence, and Desmond's philosophy of the metaxu: the between. The conversation builds from John's proposal that relevance realization and transjectivity are philosophically grounded in Desmond's ontological account of the between. John begins by distinguishing modern psychological accounts of transcendence from the ancient and Platonic sense of strong transcendence. In this stronger sense, transcendence is not merely a better state of mind. It discloses truths that are otherwise unavailable and changes the knower's relation to reality. That claim challenges modern assumptions about flat ontology, the buffered self, representational cognition, and the fact-value split. Desmond responds through Plato. He presents Plato not as a dry theorist of two worlds, but as a philosophical artist of the between: a thinker of mimesis, eros, mania, dialogue, singularity, and participatory transformation. Plato's dialogues are not ornamental containers for arguments; their drama, characters, and dialogical movement are part of the philosophy itself. The later conversation opens into deep memory, imagination, eternity, possibility, God, Daoism, intercultural philosophy, pilgrimage, and the life-world. Desmond and Vervaeke converge on the need to move beyond the view from nowhere and return philosophy to transformative practice, embodied dwelling, and a richer contact with the sources of intelligibility. Key Insights Strong transcendence has epistemological and ontological significance, not only psychological benefit. The metaxu, or between, names a porous relation before, beneath, between, and beyond modern dichotomies. Modernity's fact-value split risks producing default atheism or default nihilism. Participatory knowing offers an alternative to treating cognition as internal representation of an external world. Plato's dialogical form is integral to his philosophy; the drama cannot simply be stripped away to extract arguments. Mimesis involves relation between image and original without collapsing their difference. Eros and mania point to two directions of transcendence: from below upward and from above downward. Deep memory is a source of imagination and ontological depth, not merely storage of past facts. Possibility should not be reduced to logical possibility; living possibility points toward enabling power. Pilgrimage and theoria are linked: philosophical transformation requires being on the way, not merely observing from nowhere. Every human being, regardless of background or belief, carries the same deep drive for meaning, connection, and something bigger than themselves. Scientists have studied it, neuroscientists have mapped it in the brain, and every major religion in history has tried to answer it. So what is that longing, and where does it actually lead? This sermon looks at Jesus' conversation with a Samaritan woman in John 4, two people from completely different religions having an honest talk about worship, truth, and what the soul is really thirsty for. From entrepreneurial burnout to authorship on realignment, Pascal Wiscour-Conter shares his learnings You know that feeling when someone speaks and every single word lands? Not because they're loud or made slick slides or rehearsed an elevator pitch to death, but because you sense they mean it? Pascal Wiscour-Conter calls this alignment and has spent three years building the science to prove it. Pascal is back in the studio: author, entrepreneur, strategist, and the kind of person who once convinced government ministers in a landlocked country to register mega-yachts. His new book, The Culture of Purpose: How to Communicate in the Age of Intelligence, is out now. "Shouting louder does not work anymore. The secret is learning how to whisper: clearly, meaningfully, and with impact." We are drowning in noise: more channels, content, AI-generated everything. And yet, nobody feels more heard. Pascal's counter-intuitive argument, backed by neuroscience, Havas research, and decades of entrepreneurial scar tissue, is that the answer is not volume but authenticity. Specifically: the alignment between what you believe, what you say, and what you do. It sounds simple. Of course it's not quite that simple. The Noble Cause Why do you do what you do? Before there's a pitch, a mission statement, or a marketing budget, there's a why. Pascal calls it the Noble Cause: the thing inside you that, when unfulfilled, leaves you hollow. Pair that with an Aspirational Goal: something that makes you want to get up every morning, and you have the roots of purpose. Here's the twist: you can't think your way to it. Your neocortex, the rational brain, is not where decisions are actually made. That happens in the limbic system, the emotional centre, the part that knows you love someone but can't explain why. "Ask 'why' seven times," Pascal advises. "Keep going deeper. Very often, the real answer takes you back to your adolescence - something that made you suffer, something you've been trying to solve ever since." "People think they rationally made a decision. What really happened is the brain decided emotionally and then rationalised afterwards." The Business Case Purpose isn't fluffy - it's financial. For the sceptics, and Pascal has met plenty, here are the numbers. Havas research shows that purpose-driven, meaningful brands are 100% more effective than their counterparts. On the stock exchange? A 133% premium. The Edelman Trust Barometer maps trust against competence and ethics. Deloitte can now measure it in five specific parameters. This is a competitive edge. Pascal's model, the Tree of Business Life™, maps it visually: roots (your vision), trunk (mission and value proposition), the prism of culture, and two ecosystems in the crown: outward communication to clients, inward communication to teams. When both ecosystems are aligned and self-sustaining, he calls it Comusynthesis™: converting the energy of ideas into the energy of communities. Just like photosynthesis. Just as essential. On AI & Being Human The beast is yours to harness. Pascal is not afraid of AI. He is, however, precise about what it cannot do. Curiosity? An LLM can't wonder. Transcendence? It cannot transpose one idea onto an entirely different domain the way Newton did when an apple fell on his head. Wisdom - the ability to use lived experience to make the right call in a new situation? Distinctly human. "Use AI as a tool," he says. "But harness it. Push the limits further. The questions just get harder, like the day you were allowed a calculator in a maths exam. The test didn't get easier. You just got to solve bigger problems." His term for this? Creative AI, as opposed to Lazy AI, where you prompt, copy-paste, and call it done. One of these will make you obsolete. The other will make you extraordinary. "The next ten years will compress an Industrial Revolution and a Renaissance into one decade. Step out of the comfort zone, or someone will do it for you." Physicians lack of self-compassion? Physicians in the USA have the lowest self-compassion of any workforce. That statistic, shared at a Stanford medical roundtable that Pascal sat on, is the kind of detail that stays with you. People who enter medicine to heal others, hollowed out by a system that forgot to ask why. It is, Pascal argues, the corporate culture problem in its starkest form: the gap between the values on the wall and the values in the room. Luxembourg, by the way, has one of the highest rates of active workplace disengagement in Europe. Numbers from the annual Gallup Quality of Work Life study don't lie, even when they're uncomfortable. This is the 3rd talk in a Series on Wellness dealing with Trauma from a spiritual perspective. The two core premises presented in the discussion to help with a spiritual perspective is the Dharmic traditions understood that all pain and suffering will be somehow rooted in ignorance, and secondly, material existence and spiritual life as operating under completely different paradigms based upon the understanding (or misunderstanding) of the ‘self', who I actually am. Am I the temporary and constantly changing material body and mind, or am I an eternal spiritual being who is inhabiting the material body and mind?During the talk a previous series of seven videos was referenced, titled “Weathering a Storm”. In this episode Jerry and Stably discussed Ride the Tiger, a survival manual for the aristocrats of the soul by Julius Evola. The discussion centered on Evola's core thesis that the modern world is in terminal decline, having fallen from a traditional, hierarchical society where people found inherent meaning through natural aristocracy. The hosts explained that this decline has left people feeling a lack of meaning, which they attempt to fill through materialism, viewing both capitalism and communism as different expressions of the same materialistic impulse. Evola's prescription, the titular "Ride the Tiger," is an acknowledgment that the forces of decadence are overwhelming and cannot be stopped; therefore, the "differentiated man" must embrace the flow of modernity as a path toward transcendence, prepared to jump off and restart the cycle when the world exhausts itself. Jerry noted that the book functions more as a "permission structure" for individuals feeling alienated from the world rather than a literal manual, giving them authorization to be themselves and aim for transcendence. Both hosts acknowledged Evola's background as an actual fascist and Mussolini supporter, but pointed out that the book promotes a stance of apolitia, urging the differentiated man to be detached from all political, moral, and religious identification, as their will is their own morality. While Jerry agreed with the diagnosis of modernity's inability to provide meaning, he criticized Evola's superior, elitist tone and the book's focus on aristocracy, contrasting it with the compassionate ethics of other philosophical traditions. The hosts distinguished the modern issue of lacking meaning from the question of historical happiness, arguing that past societies may have had a clearer sense of meaning despite pervasive physical suffering. The conversation detailed Evola's philosophical critiques of his contemporaries, particularly Nietzsche and the existentialists. Evola respected Nietzsche but saw his philosophy as ultimately materialist, relying on a faith-based ideal of the Superman that Evola compared to Marxist aspirations for a "new model man". Against the existentialist claim that "existence precedes essence," Evola countered that essence, derived from the metaphysical Will, precedes existence, viewing the individual as an instantiation of this universal force. Evola also analyzed certain modern practices that a differentiated man could use for transcendence—what he called "residues of tradition"—such as asceticism, warrior ethics, and even drugs (if used to awaken the mind rather than as an anesthetic against meaninglessness). However, Jerry strongly disagreed with Evola's specific condemnation of "Negro jazz," arguing that its improvisational nature and capacity to create a trance-like state aligns perfectly with Evola's own goal of "lucid inebriation" as a transcendent experience. The episode concluded with Stan announcing the next book pick, Homo Ludens, a study of the play element in culture by Johan Huizinga.

He co-directed two short, environmental films with filmmaker Katie Cokinos. From Minnesota, Guy has now lived longest in the Catskills Mountains.  Visit:    Praise for Richard Parisio “Like his great predecessor, the English Romantic nature poet John Clare, Richard Parisio is a poet laureate of the meadows, forests, mountains, and waterways of the bioregion he so fully inhabits, the Catskills and the Hudson Valley. His eye and ear are deeply engaged with the minute particulars of the natural world—with salamanders ‘whose silent passage breathes a kind of prayer,' or mockingbirds ‘flinging mad arias of desire,' or the call-and-response of ‘windchimes and wren song.' But he also trains his clear, sharp focus on the fraught human relationship to that world of essential, yet increasingly endangered sovereignty—that world of trees, bees, and beasts that is inextricably interwoven with ours.”         ~Mikhail Horowitz Praise for Guy Reed “There is a lineage of poets—Wang Wei, Thoreau, James Wright—who remind us that deep attention is its own kind of virtuous devotion. In Time Under the Overlook, Guy Reed follows in this tradition, illuminating the overlooked and the everyday. Here, mosquitoes and the Milky Way command equal reverence, and a hundred dragonflies rise like tiny miracles. With the sharp eye of a field guide and the soul of a poet, time itself stretches just a little longer under his watchful gaze. These poems do what time rarely allows—pause, linger, and open the door to wonder.”  ~Jeffrey Davis, author of Tracking Wonder: Reclaiming a Life of Meaning and Possibility in a World Obsessed with Productivity

Beta's book is the first full biography of this remarkable, groundbreaking artist, and is an elegant, deeply researched corrective to the historical—and critical—record. It elevates Alice Coltrane to her proper place, both alongside her husband as one of the greatest musical visionaries of the 20th century, and also as a singular artist in Western music, one who became a spiritual leader in her lifetime.Alice Coltrane (1937-2007) was one of the most misunderstood artists of the last sixty years. For most of her life—and even in the decades since her passing—she was primarily known as the widow of the late John Coltrane. John Coltrane is widely seen as being one of the greatest tenor saxophonists and composers of the 20th century, with a fervor and devotion approaching sainthood. Yet ever so slowly, that level of love and appreciation is also being bestowed upon pianist, organist, harpist, and composer Alice Coltrane. In the years since her passing, she has become a great influence on a new generation of musicians, especially women, people of color, and artists who seek to combine jazz with other musical forms, be it modern classical, electronic, Indian music, and more. Cosmic Music also unearths previously unknown connections between Alice Coltrane and other generational icons, from Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, and Nina Simone to Mother Teresa and Doja Cat. The goals we set often lead us away from the meaning we ultimately seek.Meaning in life isn't a concrete point we can route toward. That's why we need what Arthur Brooks calls “proxy goals” — and much better ones than we typically choose.Brooks, a professor at Harvard Business School and author of The Meaning of Your Life: Finding Purpose in an Age of Emptiness, says that meaning can't be pursued directly, but rather through proxy goals — markers that lead us to what we're really seeking. “The big, complex, meaning-filled things in life, you can't see them directly,” he says. “If you want to find meaning, you have to have proxy goals.” The problem is that many of us have chosen terrible proxies. “Money, power, pleasure, fame, prestige; those are really bad proxy goals for the meaning of life,” Brooks says. “You're never gonna find it.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Brooks returns to the show, and with host Matt Abrahams, he explores how we can move from searching for meaning to actually finding it. From understanding the three components of meaning to transcending the “me self,” Brooks offers practical guidance for those who strive and strive, yet still feel like something's missing. To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premium.Episode Reference Links:Arthur BrooksArthur's Book: The Meaning of LifeArthur's Podcast: Office Hours179. In this episode, Host Dave Asprey sits down with Harvard professor and bestselling author Arthur Brooks to reveal the neuroscience of meaning, consciousness, and why your left brain's obsession with optimization is quietly destroying your happiness and human performance. -Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR - Buy Arthur's new book “The Meaning Of Your Life” at: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/724315/the-meaning-of-your-life-by-arthur-c-brooks/ Arthur Brooks is a professor at both the Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School, where he teaches leadership and happiness. He writes the wildly popular "How to Build a Life" column at The Atlantic, hosts the weekly podcast "Office Hours with Arthur Brooks," and has authored 15 books, including two number one New York Times bestsellers: Build the Life You Want with Oprah Winfrey, and From Strength to Strength. His new book, The Meaning of Your Life: Finding Purpose in an Age of Emptiness, releases March 31, 2026. Brooks is one of the world's foremost experts on the science of human happiness. Dave and Arthur go deep on hemispheric lateralization, the rediscovered neuroscience showing your right brain holds everything that makes life worth living: meaning, mystery, consciousness, and the ineffable experiences that no AI, no nootropic, and no amount of fasting or sleep optimization can manufacture for you. They break down why the depression and anxiety epidemic is really a right-brain deficiency crisis, and why all the supplements, ketosis protocols, and functional medicine hacks in the world won't fix it if you're living entirely in your left hemisphere. This is a rare episode that bridges hard neuroscience with the deepest questions of human existence. Whether you're deep into anti-aging, neuroplasticity training, or Smarter Not Harder living, this conversation will change how you think about what you're actually optimizing for. You'll Learn: Why the mental health crisis is fundamentally a meaning crisis, and what your brain hemispheres have to do with it How technology, AI, and screen culture are suppressing the right hemisphere and wiring you for anxiety The six scientifically backed ways to open your right brain and unlock experiences of real meaning Why self-improvement fails without first understanding the neuroscience of how ideas install in the brain How suffering, handled correctly, is the single most powerful path to consciousness and purpose Why romantic love, beauty, and deep conversation are forms of neurological medicine What Dave's $2.5 million biohacking journey taught him about the limits of optimization The Buddhist physics of suffering: pain times resistance, and how to lower the resistance instead of the pain Thank you to our sponsors! - Danger Coffee | Grab yours at DangerCoffee.com and use code DAVEPOD at checkout for 15% off. - Screenfit | Get your at-home eye training program for 40% off using code DAVE at https://www.screenfit.com/dave. - Join My Low-Oxalate 30-Day Challenge: daveasprey.com/2026-low-ox-reset - Calroy | Go to Calroy.com/DAVE for exclusive discounts on Arterosil HP, Vascanox HP and all Calroy products.Dave Asprey is a four-time New York Times bestselling author, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, and the father of biohacking. After witnessing a man drown in the Ganges during the Holi festival in Rishikesh, Kaustubha shares a sobering reflection on death, prayer, and the fragile nature of material life. In this episode of Wisdom of the Sages, he and Raghunath explore how the teachings of Bhakti Yoga and the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam help us confront mortality with clarity and spiritual perspective. But the same sacred text that reminds us of life's temporary nature also opens a window into the highest transcendence. As the discussion moves into the famous pastime of Krishna stealing the garments of the gopīs, the hosts examine a profound distinction drawn by mystics like Rumi—the difference between immorality and a realm beyond morality. In the spiritual world of Vrindavan, divine love is entirely selfless and pure, revealing a reality that transcends the ethical struggles of this world. ******************************************************************** LOVE THE PODCAST? To pray is "to lift up our minds and hearts to God."  Often, however, we lose a proper sense of the grandeur and awesome nature of God.  Routine makes us used to prayer and God becomes something taken for granted, ordinary, and even boring.  Reflecting on God's power and transcendence can spark us to a renewed love for him and new horizons in our prayer life.

Sheri is the author of the new book, The Beautiful No, And Other Tales of Trail, Transcendence, and Transformation. They discuss the inevitable question that arrives somewhere in your 50s: what's next? In the midst of a major career, an enriching family life, or other successes, how to you find inspiration for your next steps, and more importantly, how to make a total commitment to yourself to make that happen? Part of that is admitting that you don't need to settle for success in only one or two areas of your life: you can have the whole package—if you want it. And often it's the tiny changes that make a world of difference. They also propose trashing the now-prevalent work-life balance ideal, as all it seems to do is instill shame and failure in so many women. Lastly, they urge people to curate their own life experiences, instead of simply letting life happen. We discuss his decade with Castaneda, writing "Amputation" after the LA fires, the relationship between suffering and art, Buddhist and Sufi wisdom, and why fiction is our most potent vehicle to truth. Philosopher and author Rebecca Newberger Goldstein discusses her new book, The Mattering Instinct, which argues that our lives are a quest to validate our inherent self-centeredness. Tracing this essential longing from physics and biology through to ethics and politics, she explains to EconTalk's Russ Roberts why material success alone can never satisfy our deep-seated need to matter. She describes the four ways people seek significance--through transcendence, social connection, excellence, or competition--and explains how the unmet need to matter is at the heart of some of the biggest problems afflicting modern societies: loneliness, extremism, and polarization.
