Todd Ross shares his journey from growing up as a closeted queer youth in rural New Brunswick to becoming a leading voice for 2SLGBTQIA+ veterans in Canada. After being forced out of the Canadian Navy during the discriminatory LGBT purge, Todd transformed his trauma into activism—becoming a lead plaintiff in a class-action lawsuit that resulted in a national apology and the establishment of the LGBT Purge Fund. The conversation explores his intersecting identities as a Two-Spirit Métis person, the resilience forged through adversity, and the ongoing work of reconciliation, memorialization, and representation. Todd's story is a testament to healing, leadership, and the quiet strength of returning home.

*This episode includes mentions of gendered medical abuse*.Last episode, we discussed the history of Sister Kate's children's home and the policy of forced removal of Aboriginal children from their families, which officially ended in the 70's and 80's, but in reality continues to this day through policing and carceral racism.Over the other side of the world, In Nunarput, or so called Greenland, the Inuit people are experiencing their own stolen generation through the continuing genocidal policies of their coloniser Denmark. The Inuit are Indigenous to several regions in the arctic including Nunarput, northern areas of Turtle Island and Chukotka north of Russia. Nunarput was formally colonised by the kingdom of Denmark and Norway in 1721, it was transferred to Danish rule when the kingdom separated in 1814. Nunarput officially ended its status as a colony of Denmark in 1953, and gained ‘home rule' in 1979 and a referendum in 2009 gave the island ‘self government'. However foreign policy, defense and security are still controlled by Denmark, and the government of Nunarput is still largely made up of Danish settlers. In this episode Mell speaks to Michael Bro, an Inuit and 2SLGBTQIA+ advocate who has been outspoken on issues concerning the rights of Inuit people across the arctic as well as his homeland of Nunarput. If you want to know more about Inuit struggles, follow Michael on instagram @michaelsevvv and check out the resources on his linktree.Check out the film ‘Orsugiak - Greenland's White Gold', a documentary by Inuit about the exploitation of Nunarput resources. - Link incoming* gofundme campaign to help bring Inuit kids back to their parents* Petition to bring Keira Kronvold's baby homeThis episode was made on Wurundjeri land, this land was invaded, stolen and remains under occupation. In this episode of All Hands on Tech, host Eilish Bonang sits down with QueerTech's CEO and Founder, Naoufel Testaouni, to explore the organization's mission, impact, and future. QueerTech was founded in 2016 to address the lack of representation and inclusion of 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals in the tech industry. What started as a local meetup in Montreal has grown into a national movement, with initiatives like the QT Conference, QT Connect meetups, and Canada's first-ever accelerator program for queer entrepreneurs. The conversation delves into the challenges faced by queer individuals in tech, including isolation, lack of mentorship, and barriers to leadership opportunities. QueerTech aims to tackle these issues through programs designed to support early-career professionals, emerging leaders, and startup founders. By fostering connections and creating safe spaces—both in-person and online—QueerTech is working to increase representation and accessibility across the industry.Listeners will also hear about the organization's ambitious Vision 2034, which seeks to train and support tens of thousands of queer professionals, leaders, and entrepreneurs over the next decade. The discussion touches on the importance of digital inclusivity, the rise of online hate, and how QueerTech is collaborating with companies and policymakers to create a more equitable tech landscape. With over 125 events hosted since its inception and a rapidly growing community, QueerTech continues to break barriers and create meaningful change. Normalizing Non-Monogamy - Interviews in Polyamory and Swinging
Growing up in a small, remote, conservative town in Manitoba Alayna didn't even know that women could be gay... It wasn't a thing she even thought was possible. She was boy crazy in school to the point where her parents and teachers were a bit concerned. Today she takes us on her beautiful and complicated journey of discovering her own sexuality and ultimately coming out as gay when she was 29. Along the way Alayna was in a 10-year relationship with her boyfriend, explored polyamory, thought she was bisexual, and then slowly realized that she wasn't bisexual and that polyamory wasn't for her. Alayna's story is so powerful as she shows us how hard it can be to overcome the shame and societal expectations around our sexuality and relationships. Alayna described herself on her YouTube Channel better than we ever could... Earlier this year, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced dramatic changes to that province's approach to the healthcare, education, and inclusion of transgender youth. READ MORE: In Alberta's new war on trans people, children will suffer Since then, queer activists and groups supporting the rights of 2SLGBTQIA folks have come together to challenge and speak out against policies like the ones proposed in Alberta and have done their best to support queer and trans youth across the county. This week on rabble radio, Jack Layton Journalism for Change fellow Eleanor Wand sits down with Bennett Jensen, the director of legal at Egale Canada to discuss what's at stake under the proposed legislation targeting trans youth in Alberta. “When there are restrictions on access or information around queer and trans people, that communicates that there is something wrong with being queer or trans.” About our guest and Egale Canada Bennett Jensen (he/him) is the director of legal at Egale Canada where he develops, leads and directs strategic litigation in furtherance of 2SGLBTQI rights. Jensen began his career as a litigator at a leading law firm in New York City, before becoming the deputy head of the firm's award-winning pro bono practice and leading responses to national rights violations like the Muslim travel ban and the family separation crisis. Prior to joining Egale, he served as a policy advisor and then as director of litigation to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada where he supported the passage of the criminal ban against conversion “therapy.” He has been recognized as a Rising Star by the American Bar Association, as one of the LGBTQ+ Bar Association's Best 40 Lawyers under 40, and, most recently, with the 2024 Canadian Bar Association's National SAGDA Hero Award. Egale Canada is the country's leading 2SGLBTQI rights organization. Egale's vision is a Canada, and ultimately a world, without homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and all other forms of oppression so that every person can achieve their full potential, free from hatred and bias. What does the New Testament say about same-sex relationships? Three of the so-called "clobber passages" are found in Paul. These are 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, 1 Timothy 1:9-11, and Romans 1:26-27. This is not a full scale study of those passages but rather a reflection of how they have been used to exclude 2SLGBTQIA+ people and whether that is consistent. More than any other episode in our 275 plus now, this one hits home for me and is the most personal version of me you are likely ever to get on the show. If you've listened to our commercials over the month of September, you should already be familiar with the UnSeen/UnHeard Anthology on Kickstarter, a 64-page anthology that collects 12 new comic short stories about dealing with disabilities or being neurodivergent. I fall into both those camps and rarely get to chat with comics creators who do so it should be no surprise that I'm excited to talk with today's first time guests, co-editors Aubrey Lyn Jeppson and C.K. Carpenter. The challenges that creators with disabilities face is numerous, I've personally turned down quite a few comics projects as a colorist I'd love to have worked on because I didn't want to commit and ultimately let people down and regular listeners will know that from time to time I have to take a break and Jimmy kindly makes sure to keep us on a regular release schedule here on the podcast. These are our stories and this is a unique window into a rare opportunity many disabled creators have to tell them. Please consider backing the project at the link below. unSEEN/unHEARD Anthology on Kickstarter Need a PFP? Make sure to hit up Lane Lloyd Synopsis From the editors that brought you Scott Snyder Presents Tales from the Cloakroom vol. 1 and the Ringo-nominated creator of Etheres comes unSEEN/unHEARD: Disability & Neurodivergence, a 64-page anthology that collects 12 new slice of life, romance, sci-fi, fantasy, and horror short comics about dealing with disabilities or being neurodivergent. It was vital to us that stories about neurodivergent people and those with disabilities be told by people with those conditions. Similarly, creators with these conditions often find it difficult to make comics consistently, from financial barriers to constant interruptions to the creative process because their energy must go to simply...existing. As such, we wanted to produce this anthology to give those who might not usually get to tell their stories a platform to do so. The anthology covers a wide spectrum of conditions: AuDHD, Ankylosing Spondilitis, Traumatic Brain Injury, Dyslexia, Spinal Cord Injury, Misophonia associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Tourette Syndrome, Blindness, Fibromyalgia, CPTSD, and more. Furthermore, intersectionality and representation of other marginalized communities is a pillar of Unseen Alchemy Publishing. As such, expect to see 2SLGBTQIA+ and BIPOC representation in our stories. Anas Abdulhak, Aubrey Lyn Jeppson, and C.K. Carpenter comprise the editorial team. All three of us either have a disability ourselves or are neurodivergent, which was important to us in the formation of this anthology. All three have experience running crowdfunding campaigns: Aubrey Lyn Jeppson and C.K. Carpenter produced the first volume of Scott Snyder Presents Tales from the Cloakroom, and Anas Abdulhak has handled campaigns for such comics as Kill My Boyfriend and Objects in the Mirror. Our episode sponsors From Within on Kickstarter From Within is a martial arts revenge graphic novel about a slave fighting his way through a deadly tournament where the rules shift at the whims of a tyrannical emperor. It's a mash-up of the high-impact action sequences of Bruce Lee's films with the paranoid thriller undercurrent found in Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips' Sleeper series. Late pledges are enabled if you happen to hear about it after the campaign officially ends. Arkenforge Play TTRPG games? Make sure to check out our partner Arkenforge. We have become a bit disconnected after COVID but at the same time we are emerging more consciously while we were more complacent before. I hold hope about an inherent belief that collective liberation is a planetary right. I think we should all be always learning to reach that goal.semzyiri is a multimedia storyteller who blends surrealism, existentialism, cosmic wonder, and inner worlds with the lived reality of a neuroqueer cultural nomad. Navigating the crossroads of a world in poly-crisis and of nature divorced from human experience, semzyiri's work captures the intricate dance between the internal and external, offering a unique lens on our interconnected existence.I first met semzyiri at an ‘Ideas, Welcome' Session hosted by the Rideau-Rockcliffe Community Resource Centre meeting about social infrastructure and third places, organised by Luc Lalande and colleagues (see an upcoming episode about him) at the Rideau Community Hub, in Ottawa. We met again by chance at a local eco fair on June 1 2024 where we talked about our common interest in community engaged arts, art and ecology and in social collapse awareness and acceptance. One of the topics that struck me in my conversation was the notion of ‘numbness', which is coming back again and again this 5th season of the podcast, notably in e171 kimberly skye richards - dept of utopian arts & letters (‘one of the roles that artists play within the poly crisis is supporting us through processes of unnumbing'). semzyiri reminds us that : Art is something that really bypasses our walls, our numbness and our overstimulation. After our conversation semzyiri told me more about a new organization of which they are a co-founder called Collaborative Movements, a multimedia amplifier that centres community initiatives through a documentary series, a podcast, a website hub, and community events and that this initiative highlights and supports a network of third spaces, community centres, social enterprises, non-profit organizations, social innovation labs, and more. The idea is to address a diverse range of themes including local arts, sciences, sustainability, community mental health, social housing, food insecurity, IBPOC, 2SLGBTQIA+, and immigrant stories. This is a welcome development in the Ottawa arts and media community, and I hope other communities are creating their own collaborative movements.semzyiri recommends the following publications:Modern Monetary Theory by John Verdon (not yet in print)Shock Doctrine by Naomi KleinOther Minds: The Octopus, the Sea, and the Deep Origins of Consciousness by Peter Godfrey-SmithThe One by Heinrich PäsWhen Animals Dream by David Peña-GuzmánNote: Link to semzyiri's Substack. *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESI've been producing the conscient podcast as a learning and unlearning journey since May 2020 on un-ceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory (Ottawa). In this episode, I sit with a Writer and Therapist, who specialises in working with the LGBTQIA+ community, Tom Smithson (he/him). We discuss the faith that it gets better, Tom's book that he is writing due for release in 2025, that there is no one way to come out, how what a therapist looks like can affect how much we share with them, the many ways in which Tom finds his work meaningful, and the idea of ‘inviting in' as an alternative to ‘coming out'. This week's episode begins with a trip down memory lane to how Jann and Caitlin began working together! The conversation then transitions to Pride Month and the significance of the Canadian flag and their support for the 2SLGBTQIA community. They share personal stories about peeing in unconventional places...which leads to Jann's ride-on mower incident. They also cover some pride history, drag performers in the UK army, the queer experience in Calgary, online hate, the election of Naheed Nenshi, Taylor Swift's relationship, and Dave Grohl's comments about her live music. Requests for asylum in Canada from 2SLGBTQIA+ refugees are popping up from every corner of the globe, driven by hostile environments and laws targeting the community. The Canadian government has partnered with civil society organizations to welcome those facing persecution in their own countries, but are we and other states doing enough to protect this vulnerable minority? For insight, we welcome: Aleks Selim Dughman Manzur (they/them), co-executive director at Rainbow Refugee Society; Adrienne Smith (she/her), principal lawyer at Smith Immigration Law; Bali Ali (they/them), queer human rights defender; Devon Matthews (she/they), head of programs at Rainbow Railroad.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
https://www.snhu.edu/about-us/newsroom/community/pride-month-2024 In honor of Pride month, we talked with 2SLGBTQIA+ employees about what Pride means to them. From queer history, to personal stories, to a new wave of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, our community reflected on why it's so important to keep this tradition alive. From all of us at SNHU: Thank you to our vibrant and beautiful 2SLGBTQIA+ community. We celebrate and stand with you!
In communities across the country, people are gathering to mark Pride. To celebrate, to march, and - in the face of an increase in anti-2SLGBTQIA+ sentiment - to fight for the right to safety, acceptance and belonging. Last week, 36-year-old Esmail experienced their first Pride parade ever. Having fled Yemen - where homosexuality is punishable by death - they recently arrived in Winnipeg and are finally experiencing moments of being accepted for who they truly are.In a narrow vote, citizens of Westlock, Alberta recently banned rainbow crosswalks and Pride flags from all municipal properties. Shaylin Lussier, the teenager who pushed for the crosswalk in the first place, tells us why she isn't backing down - and what Pride looks like for her today. On a plot of wild prairie in central Manitoba, Charlotte Nolin and Barbara Bruce are hard at work preparing for the Two-Spirit Sundance - the only one of its kind in North America. Because life has shown them that safe ceremonial spaces for Two-Spirit people are worth fighting for.Samantha Jones was seven when she told her mom Catie that she was a girl born in the wrong body. Now 10, she hopes to start puberty blockers when it's time, but proposed policies in Alberta restricting access to gender-affirming medication might force Samantha's voice to deepen and facial hair to grow. Find out how Catie is fighting back.Toronto's Dre Govender, aka N9ne Godmother Dior, gave all of herself to her beloved kiki ballroom community - until she burnt out serving it. Now, as she prepares to come back to the community she loves after a two year absence, she gives Ify a lesson in serving face. For years, Lish Francoeur tried attending Pride events but found a lot of them were expensive, not accommodating of different mobility and sensory needs, and were far from sober-friendly. Tired of not finding the kind of queer community they needed, Lish decided to create it for themselves - and Queer Sober Social was born.

On our podcast, we've talked a lot about sexuality related to people who identify as female, but today we are focusing on those who identify as male. Societal gender roles not only impact females, but everyone else. Reece Malone and Kara discuss the way that the buzz phrase “toxic masculinity” affects those who identify as male and the way their female partners perpetuate this culture. Reece discusses topics brought into this sex therapy practice and how many grown men don't know how to access their emotions as they have been told to shut them off for so long. This messaging affects the way they show up in relationships and their sexual lives. Listen to the way Kara and Reece unpack these narratives together. Reece Malone is a sexologist, sex therapist and sexuality educator. He is an associate professor at Antioch University Seattle and a certified sexuality educator supervisor through the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists. He provides program and policy consultation and service provider training in healthcare, education, social services and corporate sectors. Reece's specializations include: workplace equitable and inclusive communication and practices, sexuality and sexual orientation awareness, 2SLGBTQIA+ equity and inclusion, transgender and gender diversity, issues in human sexuality, and sex-positive / sexuality affirming service delivery. Jen and I, Anne, sat down for a Zoom interview with Christopher Nesi, the head of the Education Podcast Network. The EPN plays host to a terrific collection of education-related podcasts, which you should definitely check out. Our interview was the first in a series called "Behind the Mic: Voices of the EPN."
