This Pride Month, we are proud to spotlight the powerful work happening in Maryland to build more inclusive and welcoming park and recreation spaces for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Way back in September 2024, Christina attended the second annual Maryland Recreation and Parks Association (MRPA) 2SLGBTQIA+ Summit at the North Laurel Community Center. As the only known state-level summit of its kind in the field of parks and recreation, this gathering is a testament to the intentional and sustained effort to center representation and inclusion across the profession, and we've been eager to share the voices and stories that came out of the summit! The summit first began in 2023, sparked by a recognized need within Maryland's park and recreation departments to better support and engage the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. As Noah Callahan from Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks explained, it all started with a gap that was quickly filled by forming a committee, engaging with community members, and building momentum for a first-of-its-kind statewide event. That first summit left a lasting impression, especially on attendees like Jaimie Wilder from Howard County Recreation & Parks. The welcoming atmosphere, thoughtful programming, and sense of solidarity stayed with them long after the event ended. So, when the second summit came around, it was clear this was becoming something special. It wasn't just a one-off, but a catalyst for real change. The 2024 summit expanded on the foundation built the year prior. With both 101 and 201 breakout session tracks, attendees were able to engage with a variety of topics including allyship, inclusive policy, indigenous inclusion, programming strategies and historical context. As Ashlyn Thompson, inclusion and community outreach specialist for Montgomery Parks, shared, the summit was intentionally planned to meet people where they are — whether just starting their inclusion journey or deepening their understanding. Kindness, joy and a strong willingness to learn was felt throughout the summit. That spirit, combined with deeply personal storytelling and education, created a space that was not only informative but transformative. Tune in to the full episode to learn more about this special event and how it's impacting the culture throughout parks and recreation in Maryland. You'll also learn: How the MRPA 2SLGBTQIA+ Summit is a model of how to build welcoming spaces through education and collaboration How connecting with speakers and organizations already doing work in your community — such as at Pride events — can make your inclusion efforts more authentic and impactful How this event led to new programs like “Robinson Rainbows” and influenced internal policies and workplace culture in meaningful ways How you can get started or deepen your organization's journey as it relates to this work And much more! LOOK OUT - Goose crossing ahead! Not all take kindly to the following of directions. Communication takes practice. Patience is needed to get where you'd like to be. Last week was National Accessibility Week (beginning on the final Sunday of May) and this time on Outlook (where “accessibility” is a given) we discuss the unhelpful helpers, how we orient ourselves, plus goose crossings and fermented mushrooms. This first Mixed Bag of June we're talking what's in store for these warmer months ahead including Pride celebrations, as we examine our gratitude toward those, in other marginalised communities, who come before us in all this disability community's diverse group and anticipating a new show reboot of the animated King of the Hill with the importance of understanding modern relevance vs a snapshot from a previous generation. Also, we touch on and go over the eager waiting for this month's announced applications to open up to qualify for the new Canada Disability Benefit and speaking of federal government, with Canada's new federal cabinet (and Mark Carney at the helm) doing the “Cabinet Shuffle” by eliminating the Minister of Diversity, Inclusion, and Persons With Disabilities. Happy Indigenous History Month and Pride Month to our First Nations, Metis, and Inuit and 2SLGBTQIA+ friends and listeners - from May mixed bags to June, toward the strawberry moon, and celebrating kidney transplant anniversaries during this summer season.

Content Warning: This interview includes personal accounts of homophobia and experiences of violence. Please listen with care and sensitivity. It's Pride Month, and while advocating for queer and trans rights is a year-round commitment, this June feels especially urgent. Countries once considered relatively safe—like the UK and the US—are rolling back protections and adopting increasingly hostile policies. And in many parts of the world, same-sex relationships are criminalized, people who defy gender norms face punishment, and simply living authentically can put someone's life at risk. An organization that works to protect queer and trans lives globally is Rainbow Railroad. In 2023 alone, Rainbow Railroad received more than 15,000 pleas for help from LGBTQI+ individuals facing life-threatening danger. While not everyone can be relocated, the organization works with global partners to get those at risk to safety. This week on the show, we're joined by: Devon Matthews, the head of programs at Rainbow Railroad to discuss the important work the organization is doing to support 2SLGBTQIA folks across the globe; and also Rahma Esslouani, a newcomer to Canada originally from Morocco. Rainbow Railroad is a global not-for-profit organization that helps at-risk LGBTQI+ people get to safety worldwide. Based in the United States and Canada, they are an organization that helps LGBTQI+ people facing persecution based on their sexual orientation, gender identity and sex characteristics. In a time when there are more displaced people than ever, LGBTQI+ people are uniquely vulnerable due to systemic, state-enabled homophobia and transphobia. These factors either displace them in their own country or prevent them from escaping harm. About our guests Devon Matthews (she/they) is the Head of Programs at Rainbow Railroad, where they lead global initiatives to support LGBTQI+ individuals facing persecution. Since joining the organization in 2018, Devon has led the organization through numerous major international emergency responses, helping to deliver life-saving support to thousands of queer and trans people at risk. She holds a BA (Hons.) from Dalhousie University and an MA at the University of London under the Refugee Law Initiative. Rahma Esslouani is a newcomer who relocated to Toronto, Canada, from Morocco via Turkey. Nunarput was formally colonised by the kingdom of Denmark and Norway in 1721, it was transferred to Danish rule when the kingdom separated in 1814. Nunarput officially ended its status as a colony of Denmark in 1953, and gained ‘home rule' in 1979 and a referendum in 2009 gave the island ‘self government'. This week on rabble radio, Jack Layton Journalism for Change fellow Eleanor Wand sits down with Bennett Jensen, the director of legal at Egale Canada to discuss what's at stake under the proposed legislation targeting trans youth in Alberta. “When there are restrictions on access or information around queer and trans people, that communicates that there is something wrong with being queer or trans.” About our guest and Egale Canada Bennett Jensen (he/him) is the director of legal at Egale Canada where he develops, leads and directs strategic litigation in furtherance of 2SGLBTQI rights. Jensen began his career as a litigator at a leading law firm in New York City, before becoming the deputy head of the firm's award-winning pro bono practice and leading responses to national rights violations like the Muslim travel ban and the family separation crisis. Prior to joining Egale, he served as a policy advisor and then as director of litigation to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada where he supported the passage of the criminal ban against conversion “therapy.” He has been recognized as a Rising Star by the American Bar Association, as one of the LGBTQ+ Bar Association's Best 40 Lawyers under 40, and, most recently, with the 2024 Canadian Bar Association's National SAGDA Hero Award. Egale Canada is the country's leading 2SGLBTQI rights organization. Egale's vision is a Canada, and ultimately a world, without homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and all other forms of oppression so that every person can achieve their full potential, free from hatred and bias. What does the New Testament say about same-sex relationships? Three of the so-called "clobber passages" are found in Paul. These are 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, 1 Timothy 1:9-11, and Romans 1:26-27. This is not a full scale study of those passages but rather a reflection of how they have been used to exclude 2SLGBTQIA+ people and whether that is consistent. More than any other episode in our 275 plus now, this one hits home for me and is the most personal version of me you are likely ever to get on the show. If you've listened to our commercials over the month of September, you should already be familiar with the UnSeen/UnHeard Anthology on Kickstarter, a 64-page anthology that collects 12 new comic short stories about dealing with disabilities or being neurodivergent. I fall into both those camps and rarely get to chat with comics creators who do so it should be no surprise that I'm excited to talk with today's first time guests, co-editors Aubrey Lyn Jeppson and C.K. Carpenter. The challenges that creators with disabilities face is numerous, I've personally turned down quite a few comics projects as a colorist I'd love to have worked on because I didn't want to commit and ultimately let people down and regular listeners will know that from time to time I have to take a break and Jimmy kindly makes sure to keep us on a regular release schedule here on the podcast. These are our stories and this is a unique window into a rare opportunity many disabled creators have to tell them. Please consider backing the project at the link below. unSEEN/unHEARD Anthology on Kickstarter Need a PFP? Make sure to hit up Lane Lloyd Synopsis From the editors that brought you Scott Snyder Presents Tales from the Cloakroom vol. 1 and the Ringo-nominated creator of Etheres comes unSEEN/unHEARD: Disability & Neurodivergence, a 64-page anthology that collects 12 new slice of life, romance, sci-fi, fantasy, and horror short comics about dealing with disabilities or being neurodivergent. It was vital to us that stories about neurodivergent people and those with disabilities be told by people with those conditions. Similarly, creators with these conditions often find it difficult to make comics consistently, from financial barriers to constant interruptions to the creative process because their energy must go to simply...existing. As such, we wanted to produce this anthology to give those who might not usually get to tell their stories a platform to do so. The anthology covers a wide spectrum of conditions: AuDHD, Ankylosing Spondilitis, Traumatic Brain Injury, Dyslexia, Spinal Cord Injury, Misophonia associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Tourette Syndrome, Blindness, Fibromyalgia, CPTSD, and more. Furthermore, intersectionality and representation of other marginalized communities is a pillar of Unseen Alchemy Publishing. As such, expect to see 2SLGBTQIA+ and BIPOC representation in our stories. Anas Abdulhak, Aubrey Lyn Jeppson, and C.K. Carpenter comprise the editorial team. All three of us either have a disability ourselves or are neurodivergent, which was important to us in the formation of this anthology. All three have experience running crowdfunding campaigns: Aubrey Lyn Jeppson and C.K. Carpenter produced the first volume of Scott Snyder Presents Tales from the Cloakroom, and Anas Abdulhak has handled campaigns for such comics as Kill My Boyfriend and Objects in the Mirror. Our episode sponsors From Within on Kickstarter From Within is a martial arts revenge graphic novel about a slave fighting his way through a deadly tournament where the rules shift at the whims of a tyrannical emperor. It's a mash-up of the high-impact action sequences of Bruce Lee's films with the paranoid thriller undercurrent found in Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips' Sleeper series. Late pledges are enabled if you happen to hear about it after the campaign officially ends. Arkenforge Play TTRPG games? Make sure to check out our partner Arkenforge. We have become a bit disconnected after COVID but at the same time we are emerging more consciously while we were more complacent before. I hold hope about an inherent belief that collective liberation is a planetary right. I think we should all be always learning to reach that goal.semzyiri is a multimedia storyteller who blends surrealism, existentialism, cosmic wonder, and inner worlds with the lived reality of a neuroqueer cultural nomad. Navigating the crossroads of a world in poly-crisis and of nature divorced from human experience, semzyiri's work captures the intricate dance between the internal and external, offering a unique lens on our interconnected existence.I first met semzyiri at an ‘Ideas, Welcome' Session hosted by the Rideau-Rockcliffe Community Resource Centre meeting about social infrastructure and third places, organised by Luc Lalande and colleagues (see an upcoming episode about him) at the Rideau Community Hub, in Ottawa. We met again by chance at a local eco fair on June 1 2024 where we talked about our common interest in community engaged arts, art and ecology and in social collapse awareness and acceptance. One of the topics that struck me in my conversation was the notion of ‘numbness', which is coming back again and again this 5th season of the podcast, notably in e171 kimberly skye richards - dept of utopian arts & letters (‘one of the roles that artists play within the poly crisis is supporting us through processes of unnumbing'). semzyiri reminds us that : Art is something that really bypasses our walls, our numbness and our overstimulation. After our conversation semzyiri told me more about a new organization of which they are a co-founder called Collaborative Movements, a multimedia amplifier that centres community initiatives through a documentary series, a podcast, a website hub, and community events and that this initiative highlights and supports a network of third spaces, community centres, social enterprises, non-profit organizations, social innovation labs, and more. The idea is to address a diverse range of themes including local arts, sciences, sustainability, community mental health, social housing, food insecurity, IBPOC, 2SLGBTQIA+, and immigrant stories. This is a welcome development in the Ottawa arts and media community, and I hope other communities are creating their own collaborative movements.semzyiri recommends the following publications:Modern Monetary Theory by John Verdon (not yet in print)Shock Doctrine by Naomi KleinOther Minds: The Octopus, the Sea, and the Deep Origins of Consciousness by Peter Godfrey-SmithThe One by Heinrich PäsWhen Animals Dream by David Peña-GuzmánNote: Link to semzyiri's Substack. *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESI've been producing the conscient podcast as a learning and unlearning journey since May 2020 on un-ceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory (Ottawa). It's my way to give back and be present. In parallel with the production of the conscient podcast and it's francophone counterpart, balado conscient, I publish a Substack newsletter called ‘a calm presence' which are 'short, practical essays about collapse acceptance, adaptation, response and art'.
