In this episode, Heather discusses her background and how she came to working with couples in therapy. She discussed how usually, when a partner in a couple has significant PTSD, it is recommended that each do individual therapy, but as she discussed, that doesn't mean the couple doesn't continue to struggle in their relationship. She shared how in her research with couples, where one person was a child sexual abuse survivor, the Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy approach was helpful, but it was difficult to complete Deescalation Stage, since there was a great deal of emotional dysregulation and difficulty with mentalizing. Heather discussed her conceptualization of Complex PTSD and how she began starting with cognitive-based interventions to help clients understand trauma, their reactions to trauma, and learn skills for emotional regulation and mentalizing, which is being able to reflect on one's own perceptions of the other, what the other may be experiencing/thinking, and how one might be being perceived. She explained how helping improve these skills helps to couple to address the effects of the trauma together and then allowing for the couple to do the relationship work. She talked about refining her Developmental Couples Therapy for Complex Trauma approaches, trained other clinicians, writing a treatment manual and conducting research. Heather also shared that she had recently published a workbook for clients, “Healing Broken Bonds: A Couple's Workbook for Complex Trauma” which goes through Developmental Couples Therapy for Complex Trauma step-by-step from a client's perspective. She describes how it's being used not only alongside treatment, but independently by couples and individuals. It can be paired with episodes of her podcast Healing Broken Bonds that help walk people through the concepts. Heather MacIntosh, Ph.D., CPsych is a clinical psychologist, Associate Professor, and Director of the Couple and Family Therapy Clinic at McGill University where she is the recipient of the H. Noel Fieldhouse Award for Distinguished Teaching. Heather is author of Developmental Couple Therapy for Complex Trauma a Manual for Therapists and Healing Broken Bonds: A Couple's Workbook for Complex Trauma. She is also the developer and host of Healing Broken Bonds, a podcast featuring couples dealing with the impacts of complex trauma in their relationships. Developmental Couple Therapy for Complex Trauma is an evidence based, psychoanalytically informed treatment approach, developed by Heather, for working with couples dealing with the impacts of complex trauma. Heather is the author of over 60 peer reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and treatment manuals. She is in demand as a speaker at international conferences and workshops as well as a resource for local and national media in the areas of trauma, couple and family relationships and issues, and queer and trans wellbeing. She leads an active funded research program having been principal researcher on over $500,000 in peer reviewed research grants and an active co-investigator on over $7,000,000 more with other internationally recognized colleagues. Heather's research primarily examines the impact of early life trauma on the process and outcome of couple therapy. In addition, she studies the experiences of 2SLGBTQIA+ trauma survivors in therapy, in healing their sexual selves, adapting and integrating models of treatment to ensure accessibility and inclusion of Indigenous, racialized, queer, and trans, graduate student therapist trainees and clients. Heather lives and works on land of the Crawford Purchase Mohawk territory “purchased” for settlement by United Empire Loyalists at the end of the American Revolutionary War. MerryMac Farm is in Eastern Ontario, Canada, where she strives to live with the land in peace, and to bring healing through therapy offered in relation with her Icelandic horses, her retired RCMP Musical Ride Horse, three Ojibwe Spirit Ponies, and a cadre of other creatures who bring joy, hilarity, and love to life.

Advocates urge Jews to march in Montreal's Pride parade after ban reversal

On Sunday Aug. 10, Montreal's 19th annual Pride parade is set to take place, and two local Jewish organizations have been once again been invited to participate—despite a turbulent few days in which the organizers originally barred both Ga'ava and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs. The explusion stemmed from complaints Pride said it received that Ga'ava, a pro-Israel, Jewish 2SLGBTQIA+ group, had used “hateful discourse” in a recent CJN article when describing groups that objected to Zionists participating in the parade this year. The short-lived ban outraged many, since Pride is supposed to be inclusive and a celebration of 2SLGBTQIA+ people, and also because the festival receives over $1 million in government funding. While the reversal is being described by some activists as a victory—and Ga'ava and CIJA, who march together, are pushing for a large turnout ahead of the big day—some members of the Jewish queer community say the whole incident has left them feeling traumatized. There is also some concern about how their enjoyment of the annual Pride experience might be marred by the required heavy security that will be deployed to protect them. On today's episode of The CJN's North Star podcast, host Ellin Bessner gets reaction from Claire Frankel, a recent graduate of McGill University and a board member with JQueer Montreal, as well as from retired Ontario justice Harvey Brownstone. Brownstone was Canada's first openly gay judge, performed numerous same-sex marriages and, years ago, was the president of Chutzpah, a group created in the 1980s to support queer Toronto Jews who had been rejected by their families. Unfortunately, even after many years, I have found that this area still has a largely unseen queer presence. Without the support of a needed community, and further isolation due to the ongoing health, social and political crises, I was compelled to explore new relationships with the environments I experienced when I was younger. Returning to these familiar places years later with a different body, I focus on getting to know the unknown self. This Pride Month, we are proud to spotlight the powerful work happening in Maryland to build more inclusive and welcoming park and recreation spaces for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Way back in September 2024, Christina attended the second annual Maryland Recreation and Parks Association (MRPA) 2SLGBTQIA+ Summit at the North Laurel Community Center. As the only known state-level summit of its kind in the field of parks and recreation, this gathering is a testament to the intentional and sustained effort to center representation and inclusion across the profession, and we've been eager to share the voices and stories that came out of the summit! The summit first began in 2023, sparked by a recognized need within Maryland's park and recreation departments to better support and engage the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. As Noah Callahan from Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks explained, it all started with a gap that was quickly filled by forming a committee, engaging with community members, and building momentum for a first-of-its-kind statewide event. That first summit left a lasting impression, especially on attendees like Jaimie Wilder from Howard County Recreation & Parks. The welcoming atmosphere, thoughtful programming, and sense of solidarity stayed with them long after the event ended. So, when the second summit came around, it was clear this was becoming something special. It wasn't just a one-off, but a catalyst for real change. The 2024 summit expanded on the foundation built the year prior. With both 101 and 201 breakout session tracks, attendees were able to engage with a variety of topics including allyship, inclusive policy, indigenous inclusion, programming strategies and historical context. As Ashlyn Thompson, inclusion and community outreach specialist for Montgomery Parks, shared, the summit was intentionally planned to meet people where they are — whether just starting their inclusion journey or deepening their understanding. Kindness, joy and a strong willingness to learn was felt throughout the summit. That spirit, combined with deeply personal storytelling and education, created a space that was not only informative but transformative. Tune in to the full episode to learn more about this special event and how it's impacting the culture throughout parks and recreation in Maryland. You'll also learn: How the MRPA 2SLGBTQIA+ Summit is a model of how to build welcoming spaces through education and collaboration How connecting with speakers and organizations already doing work in your community — such as at Pride events — can make your inclusion efforts more authentic and impactful How this event led to new programs like “Robinson Rainbows” and influenced internal policies and workplace culture in meaningful ways How you can get started or deepen your organization's journey as it relates to this work And much more! LOOK OUT - Goose crossing ahead! Not all take kindly to the following of directions. Communication takes practice. Patience is needed to get where you'd like to be. Last week was National Accessibility Week (beginning on the final Sunday of May) and this time on Outlook (where “accessibility” is a given) we discuss the unhelpful helpers, how we orient ourselves, plus goose crossings and fermented mushrooms. This first Mixed Bag of June we're talking what's in store for these warmer months ahead including Pride celebrations, as we examine our gratitude toward those, in other marginalised communities, who come before us in all this disability community's diverse group and anticipating a new show reboot of the animated King of the Hill with the importance of understanding modern relevance vs a snapshot from a previous generation. Also, we touch on and go over the eager waiting for this month's announced applications to open up to qualify for the new Canada Disability Benefit and speaking of federal government, with Canada's new federal cabinet (and Mark Carney at the helm) doing the “Cabinet Shuffle” by eliminating the Minister of Diversity, Inclusion, and Persons With Disabilities. Happy Indigenous History Month and Pride Month to our First Nations, Metis, and Inuit and 2SLGBTQIA+ friends and listeners - from May mixed bags to June, toward the strawberry moon, and celebrating kidney transplant anniversaries during this summer season.

Content Warning: This interview includes personal accounts of homophobia and experiences of violence. Please listen with care and sensitivity. It's Pride Month, and while advocating for queer and trans rights is a year-round commitment, this June feels especially urgent. Countries once considered relatively safe—like the UK and the US—are rolling back protections and adopting increasingly hostile policies.  And in many parts of the world, same-sex relationships are criminalized, people who defy gender norms face punishment, and simply living authentically can put someone's life at risk. An organization that works to protect queer and trans lives globally is Rainbow Railroad.   In 2023 alone, Rainbow Railroad received more than 15,000 pleas for help from LGBTQI+ individuals facing life-threatening danger. While not everyone can be relocated, the organization works with global partners to get those at risk to safety. This week on the show, we're joined by: Devon Matthews, the head of programs at Rainbow Railroad to discuss the important work the organization is doing to support 2SLGBTQIA folks across the globe; and also Rahma Esslouani, a newcomer to Canada originally from Morocco. Rainbow Railroad is a global not-for-profit organization that helps at-risk LGBTQI+ people get to safety worldwide. Based in the United States and Canada, they are an organization that helps LGBTQI+ people facing persecution based on their sexual orientation, gender identity and sex characteristics. In a time when there are more displaced people than ever, LGBTQI+ people are uniquely vulnerable due to systemic, state-enabled homophobia and transphobia. These factors either displace them in their own country or prevent them from escaping harm. About our guests  Devon Matthews (she/they) is the Head of Programs at Rainbow Railroad, where they lead global initiatives to support LGBTQI+ individuals facing persecution. Since joining the organization in 2018, Devon has led the organization through numerous major international emergency responses, helping to deliver life-saving support to thousands of queer and trans people at risk. She holds a BA (Hons.) from Dalhousie University and an MA at the University of London under the Refugee Law Initiative. Rahma Esslouani is a newcomer who relocated to Toronto, Canada, from Morocco via Turkey. More than any other episode in our 275 plus now, this one hits home for me and is the most personal version of me you are likely ever to get on the show. If you've listened to our commercials over the month of September, you should already be familiar with the UnSeen/UnHeard Anthology on Kickstarter, a 64-page anthology that collects 12 new comic short stories about dealing with disabilities or being neurodivergent. I fall into both those camps and rarely get to chat with comics creators who do so it should be no surprise that I'm excited to talk with today's first time guests, co-editors Aubrey Lyn Jeppson and C.K. Carpenter. The challenges that creators with disabilities face is numerous, I've personally turned down quite a few comics projects as a colorist I'd love to have worked on because I didn't want to commit and ultimately let people down and regular listeners will know that from time to time I have to take a break and Jimmy kindly makes sure to keep us on a regular release schedule here on the podcast. These are our stories and this is a unique window into a rare opportunity many disabled creators have to tell them. Please consider backing the project at the link below. unSEEN/unHEARD Anthology on Kickstarter Need a PFP? Make sure to hit up Lane Lloyd Synopsis From the editors that brought you Scott Snyder Presents Tales from the Cloakroom vol. 1 and the Ringo-nominated creator of Etheres comes unSEEN/unHEARD: Disability & Neurodivergence, a 64-page anthology that collects 12 new slice of life, romance, sci-fi, fantasy, and horror short comics about dealing with disabilities or being neurodivergent.   It was vital to us that stories about neurodivergent people and those with disabilities be told by people with those conditions. Similarly, creators with these conditions often find it difficult to make comics consistently, from financial barriers to constant interruptions to the creative process because their energy must go to simply...existing. As such, we wanted to produce this anthology to give those who might not usually get to tell their stories a platform to do so.  The anthology covers a wide spectrum of conditions: AuDHD, Ankylosing Spondilitis, Traumatic Brain Injury, Dyslexia, Spinal Cord Injury, Misophonia associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Tourette Syndrome, Blindness, Fibromyalgia, CPTSD, and more. Furthermore, intersectionality and representation of other marginalized communities is a pillar of Unseen Alchemy Publishing. As such, expect to see 2SLGBTQIA+ and BIPOC representation in our stories.  Anas Abdulhak, Aubrey Lyn Jeppson, and C.K. Carpenter comprise the editorial team. All three of us either have a disability ourselves or are neurodivergent, which was important to us in the formation of this anthology. All three have experience running crowdfunding campaigns: Aubrey Lyn Jeppson and C.K. Carpenter produced the first volume of Scott Snyder Presents Tales from the Cloakroom, and Anas Abdulhak has handled campaigns for such comics as Kill My Boyfriend and Objects in the Mirror. Our episode sponsors From Within on Kickstarter From Within is a martial arts revenge graphic novel about a slave fighting his way through a deadly tournament where the rules shift at the whims of a tyrannical emperor.
