Because September is Emergency Preparedness month, Nick and Clint put together a handful of useful tips & tricks to stay safe the next time you head out into the woods for a hike or a weekend to the campsite. As you probably know, 50 Campfires is dedicated to family camping. It’s our mission to get people outside - and outside more often. Traditionally the Daily Outdoor podcast is dedicated to topics that directly effect this take on the world. In early September, I had the chance to sit down with Mark Norquist, who operates a brand called Modern Carnivore. I met Mark about a year ago when both of us were attending the Outdoor Bloggers Summit in Bentonville Arkansas - and we hit it off. I asked Mark to meet me at a local brewery outside of Minneapolis to share his views on the connections between camping, foraging, fishing - and even hunting. As we sat and talked, I couldn’t help but nod my head to much of what Mark was saying. I hope you go into this episode with an open mind. Enjoy. There's a buzz traveling around the outdoor world regarding War-Mart's acquisition of retailer Moosejaw. Which got us wondering...if you're a Mossejaw customer, are you going to start shopping at War-Mart? If you're a Way-Mart customer - are you suddenly more attracted to the Moosejaw store? Do you even know what they are? We'd love to hear your feedback, especially on where you buy your hiking, camping and climbing gear - does this impact you? I’m going to assume that you understand what the “sharing economy” is…Platforms like AirBnb, Uber and bicycle sharing are changing the way we see and visit the world. Things that seemed almost impossible a decade ago are now standard ways of traveling and getting around I had the opportunity to speak with an entrepenuer named Joel Holland. Joel is the CEO of Harvest Hosts - and digital platform that’s designed to connect RV’ers with more than 600 farms, wineries, breweries and other private locations around the country. It’s really a great idea. Joel shared what makes Harvest Hosts so unique, why he left his job in the city, and what’s next for RV’ing and camping. I hope you’ll take the time to check out Harvest Hosts, and their network of RV sites around the country. For more information, visit: http://www.harvesthosts.com
On the last Saturday of June 2018, I found myself hanging out inside of a Tentsile tree tent in the heart of the redwood forest in Northern California. You’ve probably seen these tents - or have at least heard of them. I like to think of them as a grown up camping tree house. They’re super cool. Anyways, I was fortunate enough to be hanging out with Alex, the founder of the company. Like I usually do, I took out my phone, and recorded our conversation. I found it fascinating to hear about how he came up with the idea, what camping looks like in other countries, and what’s next for his brand. I hope you enjoy our conversation. When Marlene arrived in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, she had no idea that a summer job with the YMCA would somehow shape the direction of the rest of her life. On a day in early June, I met Marlene on a trail inside of Rocky Mountain National Park - where she told me her story. I hope you enjoy. This is a special solo-edition of the 50 Campfires : Daily Outdoor podcast. Clint digs into the nerdy science behind sleeping bag ratings. Have you ever wondered how a company decides how cold a sleeping bag is rated down to? A 20º bag? A 0º bag? We got to talking one cold night in camp, and decided that we'd eventually figure that out. Well, here it is! In June of 2018, the 50 Campfires team was fortunate to spend a day in Fort Collins, Colorado - and hang out at the New Belgium Brewery. While we were familiar with New Belgium, and have drank our fair share of their beers over the years, we were less familiar with the employee-owned business model that the brewery was founded under. The story of how New Belgium started and continues to operate to this day was a story that we knew we had to share...with you. I hope you enjoy this one-on-one interview with Bryan Simpson, a long standing employee owner of the New Belgium Brewing Company. It seems like there's been more awareness lately for taking care of our great outdoor places. From trails to campgrounds, it's important to leave it better than you found it. The 50 Campfires team recently came across a list that was published by Inside Hook called "The 50 Worst People At Your Campsite, Ranked" (you can find the full list here: https://www.insidehook.com/nation/50-worst-people-at-your-campsite-ranked) - and we couldn't get enough. In some cases, we know these people...in others, we might be these people. Regardless, it's an entertaining read - and a topic that really resonated with us. Clint and Nick discuss a few Campfire Cone recipes that they've put together, as well as sample a moonshine cocktail infusion that Nick has had "brewing" in a mason jar for a week. Coachella decided to delay entrance to the festival campsites, and we discovered an English climber who has established a B&B hanging over the English Chanel. A half dozen times per year, the 50 Campfires team heads out on the road to explore the people, places and locations that make our country unique. In late March 2018, the team headed to Florida to explore the Nature Coast on the Northwestern side of the state. They spent a week exploring natural springs, swimming with manatees, fishing from kayaks and road tripping around the area. This is a brief recap of the trip. We first heard about "Champing" about a month ago from an article that we stumbled across online. Basically, it's the idea of camping or glamping inside of historic churches across the United Kingdom. It was an idea that was developed (and trademarked!) by The Churches Conservation Trust - a charity group that's responsible for managing and protecting the historical churches in the UK. We had the please of speaking with Chana James, who's the National PR Officer for the Churches Conservation Trust. She shared her insights on how champing got its start, what it takes to spend the night in a church, and the closest champing opportunity to a pub. Enjoy! To learn more about Champing, or to book a visit - check out their website: http://champing.co.uk For more camping tips, tricks, gear reviews, recipes & more - visit us at http://www.50Campfires.com *Thanks for subscribing & reviewing the 50 Campfires : Daily Outdoor podcast!
If you follow along with 50 Campfires, then you already know that Nick is a nerd for all things "limited edition"...including whiskey and bourbon. The guys got their hands on a limited run bottle of Roaming Man whiskey from Sugarlands Distilling Company in Gatlinburg, TN - and gave it a taste. If you're hoping to get your hands on a bottle of the next limited edition run, sign up for Sugarlands email list - and they'll let you know when it's coming: https://www.sugarlands.com/whiskey/pre-order/ For more camping tips, tricks, gear reviews, recipes & more - visit us at http://www.50Campfires.com *Also, thanks for subscribing & rating the 50 Campfires - Daily Outdoor podcast!
Clint was left alone in the 50 Campfires Studio for the day, and put together a pretty interesting Q&A show - with the most popular camping-related questions that people ask Google. Sure, som are philosophical, others are pretty straight forward - but regardless - it's a pretty interesting way to gain some insight on other campers around the country. For more tips, tricks, gear reviews, recipes & more - visit us at http://www.50Campfires.com
Matthew Hofmann is an architect living in Southern California. After making a career for himself designing and building small living & working spaces, he started a company called Living Vehicle. This isn't a part-time mobile home. The Living Vehicles are designed to be full-time living spaces for up to 6 people. They're beautifully designed, and integrate not only indoor space - but bring the outdoors along for the journey as well. You could live off-grid for as long as your water supply allows, thanks to the solar powered construction of the Living Vehicle. We had the pleasure of speaking with Matthew, and asking him what makes his vehicles special - and where they're going. Enjoy. To learn more about the Living Vehicle, visit them: http://www.LivingVehicle.com
On Monday, March 26 we invited musician Shane Secor into camp at Lake Griffin State Park in Florida to play a 50 Campfires : Campfire Session. It's always great to connect with local and national musicians as our paths cross - and this was no exception. Shane's music blurs the lines between country, folk and even punk rock. It was a pleasure having him in camp with us - and if you get the chance, you should check him out live in concert as he makes his way around the country. For more on Shane Secor, check out his website: http://www.shanesecor.com
Have you ever dreamed about designing the next great camping product? What about the brain behind a new climbing or hiking innovation? It could become a reality! We recently learned about a program in Outdoor Product Design and Development from Utah State University. In this episode of the Daily Outdoor, Nick and Clint had the chance to speak with Chase Anderson from the school - who gave us a little more insight into what this degree program is all about. If you're interested in learning more, feel free to reach out to Chase Anderson directly: chase.anderson@usu.edu
50 Campfires had the privilege of speaking with Chris Havel, who's the Associate Director of Oregon State Parks, and has been for nearly 24 years. We wanted to know what was behind record setting years in their campgrounds - as well as some of his favorite spots to check out around the state. We were fortunate enough to spend some time camping around the state a few years ago, and had an amazing time in their parks. Stunning, beautiful and memorable. Enjoy!
We recently learned about a movie event outside of Austin, TX called JAWS On The Water. Basically, Rolling Roadshow sets up a huge movie screen on the edge of a lake - and projects the movie JAWS onto it. Even better? The audience is floating on inner tubes with their feet dangling. They've built in some additional surprises to the experience as well. We caught up with Henri Mazza, the VP of Events for Rolling Roadshow and Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas - who painted a pretty amazing picture of what this event looks like. We hope you enjoy!
On this episode of the Daily Outdoor, Clint discusses a photo that's been floating around on the internet of a "sneaky" camping spot on the roof of a train station in San Francisco - and how it was discovered. Also, the Florida Interstate got a little drunker this week, as a truck hauling 60,000lbs of canned beer overturned - spilling it all over the highway. Do you have an extra $4,000 that you'd like to drop on a vacation? We've got just the trip for you - camping with reindeer herders in Russia. Enjoy!
We're celebrating International Women's Day with a handful of women in the outdoors that inspire us. We talk about the first woman to hike the entire Appalachian Trail...the first woman to summit Mt. Everest, as well as a few of our favorite contemporary women in the outdoors. Who inspires you? As always, we'd love to hear about them! Also, don't forget to rate & subscribe! Enjoy!
NASA put their best minds to work, and developed a lightweight, compact material that Prima loft took over - and worked into sleeping bags. While we haven't tried it, we thought the crossover between space and camping was pretty interesting. We also check out the new Diamond Grip from Yaktrax - perfect for anyone who needs to move across the frozen winter tundra... Lastly, why are we still using disposable drinking straws? They're filling our oceans with plastic, and there are so many great alternatives on the market. Enjoy!
An artist in Minnesota has left a scary sculpture at the bottom of an old pit mine lake, appropriately named "Crystal Lake" of Friday the 13th bad guy Jason Voorhees. Also, we talk about the new Light Phone 2 and what Clint liked about the original Light Phone. Enjoy!
Nikolas Green is a young man with a YouTube channel. To celebrate his 70th follower, he decided to spend a night outside...camping for his first time...in a blizzard. Overnight, his videos received millions of views - not because he was an expert camper, but rather because he showed his authentic experience of camping for the first time. We also talk about the re-release of the Nokia 8110 cell phone that boasts a 17 day battery life. Maybe it's time to get rid of our smart phones and de-evolve with technology? All that and more - enjoy!
We recently came across an auction to spend a night at Camp Crystal Lake - the scene from the original Friday the 13th movies. Not only is it a real place, but for the right price - you can spend the night there on FRIDAY THE 13th!! The guys have mixed opinions on the topic. IN addition, they overview Glerups wool slippers and the new underwear brand BN3TH.
As most campers know, glass is a big no-no at the campsite. A single beer or wine bottle can cause havoc for kids, pets - and anyone who enjoys spending time barefoot outdoors. We recently got a shipment of The Drop - wine in a can, and we taste it for the first time. In addition, we talk about a few points from a recent article we published "10 Things Every American Should Know About Our National Parks." Enjoy!
One of our favorite camping meals is made by Maine-based Good To-Go. Backed by the skills of an Iron Chef-winning co-owner, these dehydrated meals are spicy, natural and delicious. Even better when we combine them with Outdoor Bill's 7-Layer, 7,000 calorie dutch oven brownies. Enjoy!
For as long as we can remember, Clint's been trying to convince Nick that zero drop shoes are where it's at. On this episode of the Daily Outdoor, Nick shows up wearing the newest Coalton shoes from barefoot shoe company Xero Shoes. Clint's reaction is priceless. Enjoy!
When Nick and Clint traveled to the Northeast in the summer of 2018, they had the fortune of connecting with a guy named Own Rachampell who worked for Darn Tough Socks. Owen's claim to fame? He had hiked the entire Appalachian Trail in just 4 months. We thought his story and personality were so interesting that we had to talk to him again. We hope you enjoy!
Believe it or not, January is a pretty busy time around the 50 Campfires offices. It's trade show season, and we're out looking for trends and gear that'll make our summer camping trips more enjoyable. On this episode, Nick is broadcasting from the Venetian Resort while Clint mans the studio back in Minneapolis. Enjoy!
What's your trick to getting outside and staying active during the cold winter months? Ice fishing? Cross country skiing? Snowshoeing? We break down some of our favorite winter activities - and look for yours. Enjoy!
On this episode, Clint and Nick discuss GoPro getting out of the drone business, and the life-saving beer that comes complete with a blanket and a knife. Plus lots more on this weeks episode of the Daily Outdoor! We'd love to hear what you think - and include you in an upcoming episode! Send us a direct audio message via our profile on Anchor: http://www.anchor.fm/50campfires
We didn't believe it until we saw it with our own two eyes : waterskiing in sub-zero temperatures over the New Years holiday?!? Also, we check out the new TinCup Whiskey X Danner boots collaboration - and what does the acronym C.O.L.D. - what does it mean?
At the end of every year, the editors from 50 Campfires get together to pick their favorite gear they've used over the past 365 days. The winning selections become known as "Gear of the Year". If you're looking for new camping, hiking or outdoor gear - give this episode a whirl.
