Anastasia Avvakumova/ Cortes Currents - Cortes Island is a noteworthy location for the number of annual warranties claimed through the Darn Tough brand of socks, which are guaranteed for life. Although the 2022 claims total was only 21 pairs for the island, per capita this is 24.75 times higher than the Cities of Vancouver, North Vancouver and West Vancouver combined. Cortes and Quadra Islands together added up to 43 pairs claimed under warranty in 2022, which is the same number as all of Campbell River, said Carly Murdoch in the warranty department of the Canadian distributor, Interex Industries. As a remote island community, there are very few outlets for buying everyday goods like socks. This particular brand has been carried locally by Cortes Natural Food Co-op since at least 2015. “Since June of 2020, we have sold approximately $25,000 in retail value of Darn Tough Socks, likely more than 700 pairs,” said Wellness Buyer Kate Archibald. “We sell the most socks in the lead-up to the winter holidays, and given the limited gift-shopping options on the island in the winter-time I expect a lot of people receive Darn Tough socks for Christmas," she said. According to Darn Tough's website, the company has been designing and manufacturing socks in Vermont, USA for almost 40 years. In Canada, they are distributed by Interex Industries in Vancouver, and claimants can navigate to the warranty page for all relevant information on submitting a pair for replacement.
Janelle Thomas, better known as Coach Nelly, has more than 20 years of experience coaching under her belt. In 2018, she birthed Raising Little Rippers, where she has created an educational resource for adventurous mamas, raising the next generation of big mountain skiiers. She's a treat to learn from! Janelle Thomas started working as a Ski Instructor her senior year in college. She knew teaching littles to ski was right up her alley. Armed with a Degree in Psychology with a strong focus on Adventure Therapy, she had no idea that she would spend the next several years working in the ski industry. From Certified Ski Instructor, to Children's Program Supervisor, to Ski School Clinician, her specialty has always been working with children. As she started a family of her own, her biggest joy became raising her own three (not so little anymore) rippers, and she continued working as a part-time ski instructor season after season. Skiing can be challenging financially and physically. Risks and How to Mitigate Them: Start in young years teaching simple things like moving to side of hill when you stop (pull over like a car), and being aware of environment As they grow in skills and age, share nuggets of risk management along the way. Those become habits! Teach how to merge on trail and how to give right of way Take them out into environment and use actual moments as teachable moments Raising Little Rippers: Virtual coaching, but also meet ups with other mamas Asks individually what mamas need for tips and tricks Session also includes a movement analysis via videos sent - so you know where to go next Shares drill and game videos to help them progress through next steps When to Start Skiing: Can start kids as young as 15-months, but will take longer to progress - so set expectations. Keep it fun! Introducing them to snow, weather, flat ground work Kids 5 to 6-years-old will progress faster. Also depends on particular kid Young age - start at home!! Grow interest, curiosity, and comfort. Be willing to go in and outside. Then work on teaching them to slide (can use edgy wedge or harness). Learn wedge downhill – think “pizza” shape, then learn turns to control speed https://www.raisinglittlerippers.com/blog/teaching-tools-from-edgie-wedgie-to-ski-harness https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdbrRuc1TRo&ab_channel=RaisingLittleRippers Learning as a Family: Learn alongside kids. Can do family private lessons at some ski skills Or adults can take lessons and then put the children in the child-specific lessons. After, come together and teach each other what you learned Raising Little Rippers will help parents progress as well How to Ski on a Budget [stay tuned in two weeks for another episode on this]: Get to know local area – thrift and secondhand stores Check during off-season for sales Watch for ski swaps – usually right before season starts (October/November) Handmedowns are wonderful! https://www.raisinglittlerippers.com/blog/how-to-family-skiing-on-a-budget Some Gear Tips: Don't skimp on helmet; you don't want any gap between ski goggles and helmet Young kids don't need ski poles Use quality gear that is breathable, warm, dry (especially mittens or gloves) Recommendations: Shred Dog Convertible Children's Ski Bibs (grow for many seasons with the kids) - https://shreddog.com [https://www.raisinglittlerippers.com/blog/the-elevated-collection-shred-dog-gear-review] Darn Tough Socks - https://darntough.com Podcast: Ski Moms Fun Podcast - https://www.buzzsprout.com/1882919/9922299-teaching-your-kids-to-ski-with-nelly-thomas The Great American Rail Trail - https://www.railstotrails.org/greatamericanrailtrail/route/ Follow Along: www.raisinglittlerippers.com Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/raisinglittlerippers Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/RaisingLittleRippers You Tube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCu3wl7KBxyncpZOMwH-PhZg Thank you to Keen Footwear for sponsoring today's podcast! Our guest on today's episode is with Rachael, near Tunnel Falls, off the Eagle Creek Trail in Oregon. On this episode we clocked in at about 13 miles roundtrip and around 2,400 ft of elevation gain spread across the out and back. Why 13 miles and why Eagle Creek? One word - Waterfalls. We were averaging around 2 waterfalls per mile, culminating with Tunnel Falls, a 175 foot waterfall, with a tunnel carved behind it that you walk through. Joe Nocito, International Sales and Global Marketplace Business Development at Darn Tough Vermont, laughs as he tells people sitting next to him on a flight that he's a sock salesperson. It's true but it's an understatement to all that he's done. Over the last five years, he's taken Darn Tough Socks from 3 countries (US, Japan, and Canada) to 25 countries around the world. We deep dive into how he and the senior management team developed their international growth strategy and talk about grants available for translation. And for fun, hear about why the socks they sell are different in Sweden and Norway! In recent years, "rucking" has become a popular form of exercise. For many decades, the ruck march, rucksack, and rucking were terms only heard in a military context. The benefits of rucking for exercise, though, apply to everyone, so let's talk about how to start rucking safely, the gear you'll need, and how to track your progress.
Our worry over clothing drives us to buy too many clothes at too low a price and for all the wrong reasons. All of this inadvertently sustains an industry involving 1.5 billion underpaid workers and tens of millions of slaves. But how do we move forward as followers of Jesus? How do we buy clothes in today's complex world? Positive Mentions: GORUCK, Redwing Shoes, Darn Tough Socks, Prana, Everlane, Patagonia, Adidas, Columbia, and a long list at: truecostmovie.com. (forgot to mention Levi’s, Calvin Klein, IKEA, and others!) Negative Mentions: Walmart, American Eagle, Abercrombie, Macie’s, Aeropostale, Carter’s, Nike, Nordstrom’s, Gymboree, Costco, Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, Bed Bath & Beyond, and of course many others as well. Nicole Mericle is your 2019 Spartan Race World Champion. This is Nicole's first world championship. Nicole and Lindsay Webster have been going back and forth all year in the Spartan US Championship Series and at the Spartan North American Championship. Nicole and Lindsay are clearly the top two women in Spartan Racing right now. Lindsay has won most of their head-to-head matchups this year, but in the race that mattered most, Nicole Mericle stepped on the gas and won by nearly 16 minutes. Nicole's win at the Spartan World Championship this weekend was one of the most dominant World Championship performances we've ever seen, male or female. Her world championship places her alongside other past world champions including Lindsay Webster, Zuzana Cucomova, and Amelia Boone. We talk about how she was scared in the starting chute at Tahoe, why she comes out of the gate so fast at every race, and what her plans are for the Spartan Race Million Dollar Challenge. Nicole is sponsored by Darn Tough Socks, Spartan Race, and AltRed. You can follow her on Instagram at @nickeldm. --- Welcome to The OCR Report Podcast! Nicole Mericle may be the fastest woman in OCR. Nicole is the reigning two-time back-to-back 3k champion of the OCR World Championships. In 2018 she won the Red Bull All In OCR in Oberstdorf, Germany. In 2018 she also placed second in the Spartan Trifecta Championship in Athens, Greece. This year she has won three of the four Spartan races held so far and she will be on the start line at the first race in the Spartan U.S. Series on February 23 in Jacksonville, Florida. Nicole is a member of the Spartan Pro Team, and is sponsored by Darn Tough Socks, and AltRed Beet Supplement. She is an ambassador for Salomon Trail Running shoes. (Nicole likes the S/Lab Sense 7 SG.) Before we talked with Nicole we talked dates and venues for the Spartan Mountain Series and Spartan Stadion Series. We also answer the question: "What is a Stadion?" (Spoiler: It's a distance. Not a location.) We also read our first batch of reviews from Apple Podcasts. Product Endorsement – Darn Tough Socks https://darntough.com This is my first product endorsement podcast that I’ve shared and in all honesty, I can’t remember a product in the resent past that I’ve just completely loved!!! Darn Tough Socks is that product and I share the story how I came across them, use them, and benefits. This is the actual style I have - https://darntough.com/collections/mens-hike-trek/products/boot-sock-full-cushion-1?variant=30180817799. Three pairs right now and still growing!!!!
When Nick and Clint traveled to the Northeast in the summer of 2018, they had the fortune of connecting with a guy named Own Rachampell who worked for Darn Tough Socks. Owen's claim to fame? He had hiked the entire Appalachian Trail in just 4 months. We thought his story and personality were so interesting that we had to talk to him again. We hope you enjoy!
Manufacturing socks in a small town in Vermont, especially in the 80s and 90s when most companies were sending this work offshore, is hardly your standard business plan. Still, as of 2016, Darn Tough Socks was a 40 million dollar business. The name “Darn Tough” is a brilliant pun. The socks, like the CEO, are resilient (carrying a lifetime guaranty,) and relentlessly and thoroughly vetted and improved to strengthen them further. When asked for business advice Ric’s was simple “never, ever, give up.” What he’s found is that the hard way turned out to be the best way. Lessons: 1.When things seem impossible, sometimes the answer is to double down on your strengths. 2.There is no such thing as negative feedback; it’s all valuable information that can steer you towards improvement. 3.Doing things the hard way can reap its own rewards. 4.Success is holistic - making the extra effort to support the community pays back in loyalty, quality and branding.
