In this chilling episode of National Park Nightmares, we explore two of the most unsettling disappearances in America's wild places—stories where the line between accident and something darker blurs beyond recognition.First, we return to 1958 and the shadowy slopes of Mount Meeker in Colorado. Ten-year-old Bobby Bizup vanished from Camp St. Malo, a Catholic boys' camp near Rocky Mountain National Park. Deaf, trusting, and familiar with the camp, Bobby was last seen leaving a fishing spot alone. Despite an exhaustive search, his remains weren't found until a year later—by a counselor who was also one of the last people to see him alive. Decades later, shocking revelations surfaced: that same counselor, Neil Hewitt, along with other clergy members from the camp, were later exposed as prolific abusers. Federal investigators are now reopening Bobby's case, fueled by new evidence—including the discovery of Bobby's missing skull in the possession of a Colorado family tied to the camp's leadership. What really happened to Bobby Bizup? And why did the people meant to protect him fail him so completely? Then we move to Yosemite National Park, 1981. Fourteen-year-old Stacey Ann Arras disappears during a short walk from Sunrise High Sierra Camp. Last seen standing on a rock near camp, she simply vanished. Despite an intensive search, not a single clue was found. No tracks. No belongings. Nothing. How does a teenager disappear in plain sight on a sunny afternoon? Forty years later, we still don't have answers. These are stories of innocence lost in America's most beautiful—and unforgiving—places. How do you measure a mountain?

On the banks of the St Lawrence River in Quebec stands a 100-year-old lighthouse. While initially built to help boats navigate one of Canada's most difficult waterways, the Point-de-Père site now also holds a different responsibility: it is a key reference for measuring sea levels around the entire North America continent. But this is all set to change. With the development of new satellite technology, the tricky task of measuring sea levels is being updated - which could mean mountains around North America get brand new official heights. In this episode we revisit a question from CrowdScience listener Beth, who wondered about the elevation signs she saw scattered along a mountainous road, indicating how high above sea level she was. As sea levels rise, will all the elevation signs need repainting? And how do you measure sea level, anyway? The height of an enormous pile of rock like Ben Nevis, or Mount Everest feels unchangeable. But we measure them relative to the nearest patch of sea, which is where our story becomes complicated. Unlike water in a bath, sea level is not equal around the world. In fact, nothing on earth - not the sea, the shore or the mountains - is stable or constant, so the question of what you measure from and to becomes incredibly tricky. But that hasn't stopped scientists risking life and fingers to use an ever-evolving array of technologies to find answers. Join host Marnie Chesterton as she dives into the mechanics of the latest sea level technology, and how it could make a big difference to understanding our unpredictable world. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Pamela Kyel, author of the book Charm City Spouse's Club. Award-winning author Pamela Kyel was born and raised in Edgewood, Maryland—north of Charm City. It's kind of a running joke that when you live near a large, well-known city, you tell people that's where you're from. So, unofficially, she's from Baltimore!   She followed the drum of the Air Force for 25 years. She joined her husband on six assignments—OCONUS (Outside Continental United States), aka overseas, and CONUS (Continental United States). Along the way, they added two children and numerous pets, not counting the half-a-dozen cats that came with their house in Italy. She has traveled extensively across the states and Europe, with her favorite overseas locations being Paris and Slovenia, among stateside favorites such as Rocky Mountain National Park and Door County, Wisconsin.   Family is important to her, and nowhere is that more evident than in her Charm City Mystery Series. When you've lived across the world from mothers and brothers, you adapt and overcome. You create family—and they stay with you long after the career ends. Her military family resides in Virginia, Texas, and North and South Carolina—with many still on active duty worldwide.   Writing came out of their duty station in Illinois. She picked up her computer while sitting with her elementary-age child through covid classes and thought, I can write a book. And the rest is history. While her original novel will never see the light of day, she grew and expanded her confidence in what she was doing. She was good at this, and she would have something to show for it one day. In a little over three years, she'd trod the agent querying circuit and amended her goal. Now, she just needed to hold her book in her hand. It was necessary. With that in mind, she sent out three queries to small publishers, and for her, the third time was the charm. The Wild Rose Press picked up her book and offered a contract. Less than a year later, she now held all those years of hard work in her hand.    In my book review, I stated Charm City Spouses Club is the second installment of the Charm City Mystery series. If you loved Special Agent Laci Duvall, AFOSI in the first book, you won't be disappointed in the second! This time, Laci is at a friendly baseball game between the Air Force and Army's Special Investigative Teams. However, the friendly game turns deadly when the president of the military spouse's club turns up dead in the bathroom.   The list of potential murder suspects is long - from jealous women who wanted to be president to unhappy club officers who hated the president's cruel nature, to unhappy neighbors and everyone in between.   But Laci isn't just trying to solve a murder. She is figuring out how to work in tandem with another military agency all while fighting the new agent in her own office who wants to make a name for herself by taking over the investigation without Laci's direction or approval.   Once again, we see Laci's humor, charm, and insights into the world around her. This is a book you won't want to miss. Today I sit down with Maximilian Barlerin. You might have first heard his name back in October when Corey Buhay wrote what Max humbly calls “a fluff piece” about his staggering 14-pitch, 5.13 big wall first ascent in the Wind River Range—Children of the Sun. The article described an "everyman" 5.14 climber balancing family, two jobs, a fledgling business, and an impressive list of first ascents. This is the first time Maximilian has spoken publicly about his life.Max isn't just a climber…He works as a climbing ranger and search-and-rescue responder in Rocky Mountain National Park. His career put him face-to-face with some of the harshest realities of the mountains, forcing him to reconcile the risks we take as climbers with the consequences he's witnessed firsthand. Through years of SAR work, close calls, and deep self-reflection, he's developed a rare perspective on climbing, risk, and the ever-evolving relationship we have with danger.Just days before this episode launch, I learned that Max and his entire team of rangers had been laid off due to recent federal budget cuts—a devastating blow, especially for those who relied on the job not just for income, but for housing. The outdoor community is certainly hurting right now, and my heart goes out to everyone affected. Max reminds us that this is not a good year to get injured in the mountains—there just might not be anyone there to rescue you. After we unpack the highs and lows of his time as a climbing ranger..we dive into four of his most notable first ascents in Patagonia, Zion, and the Wind River Range—covering the vision, the process, and the lessons he's learned along the way.Maximilian is a soft-spoken, humble climber with an astonishing depth of experience and achievement, and I'm psyched to share his story.----HELP KEEP THIS PODCAST AD FREE! | For a little as $3/mo!----Don't forget to check out our full video episodes on Youtube! The TCM movement is growing but we need your help to spread the word! This invigorating winter activity offers a plethora of benefits for triathletes and fitness enthusiasts alike. The Benefits Snowshoe running is a powerhouse workout that combines cardio, strength, and endurance. The added resistance of trudging through the snow increases the intensity of your runs, making it a phenomenal cardiovascular exercise that boosts your aerobic capacity. The uneven terrain challenges your stabilizer muscles, enhancing strength and coordination. Plus, it's a low-impact activity that reduces the risk of injuries typically associated with running on harder surfaces. Snowshoe running also works your core and legs harder than traditional running, promoting muscular and tendon development while improving overall athletic performance. Essential Gear Getting started with snowshoe running requires some specialized equipment, but don't worry—it's straightforward. Here's what you'll need: Snowshoes: Opt for running-specific snowshoes which are lighter and more streamlined than their hiking counterparts. Brands like Atlas and MSR offer excellent options. Running Shoes: Wear your regular trail running shoes, paired with gaiters to keep the snow out. Apparel: Dress in moisture-wicking, breathable layers to stay warm and dry. Don't forget gloves and a hat to protect against the cold. Poles (Optional): Some runners prefer using poles for added stability, especially on uneven or steep terrain. How to Get Started Starting your snowshoe running journey is easier than you might think. Follow these steps to hit the snow-covered trails with confidence: Find a Trail: Look for local parks or dedicated snowshoe trails. Many ski resorts also offer groomed trails perfect for beginners. Warm-Up: Just like any workout, start with a dynamic warm-up to prepare your muscles and prevent injuries. Pace Yourself: Snowshoe running is more challenging than regular running, so begin with shorter distances to build your endurance. Focus on Form: Keep a shorter stride and lift your knees higher to navigate through the snow effectively. Use your arms to maintain balance. Stay Hydrated: Cold weather can be deceiving; you still need to stay hydrated, so bring water and hydrate regularly.   5 Best Trails to Check Out in Colorado according to All Trails:   #5. Nymph Lake Trail: Head out on this 5.0-mile out-and-back trail near Estes Park, Colorado. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 2 h 34 min to complete. It's been a hotly-debated topic ever since the rotation with Nice was announced and it seems all options are now open for the IMWC.   The future location and format of the IRONMAN World Championship would appear to be more up in the air than ever judging by the latest development from the M-Dot brand.   Rumours have been swirling around for much of the second part of this year as to whether the current rotation between the spiritual home of Kona and Nice will see out its four-year cycle.   The IMWC had always been held in Hawaii, with the men and women racing on the same day. That was until 2022 when they were each given their own day in Kona, with the pro women racing on the Thursday that year and the men on the Saturday.   From a pro racing perspective the hugely important benefit of that was that the women had their own day of racing and all the coverage that entailed.   However at that point it proved too much for the islanders, with the then mayor saying: “We learned that more than one race day during IRONMAN week is too many for the community to manage.”   But with a steadfast commitment now in place for separate race days for men and women, IRONMAN decided a dual location system was the next best solution – so for 2023 they announced that the women would race in Kona and the men in Nice around a month before, which would then rotate for the next four years through to 2026.   We're only halfway through that process and it's far to say it continues to split opinion more than virtually any other topic in triathlon – with huge implications for age-groupers and pros alike.   It's a burning issue for Scott DeRue, who this year took over from long-term incumbent Andrew Messick as IRONMAN's CEO and inherited the rotation format.   Another potentially significant recent change is a new mayor in Hawaii – so could two days in Kona now be back on the table?   ‘Listening and learning' Judging by a survey that IRONMAN have sent out to sections of the media (and plenty of others by the sounds of it, including the all-important athletes) it would appear that all options are again up for discussion.   The email introduction to the survey we received read as follows: “Respected Members of the Media – Two years ago, we split the IRONMAN World Championship, spanning both Kona and Nice, and we are incredibly proud of all that our athletes have achieved in both of these historic and beautiful locations.   Email/Survey Two years ago, we split the IRONMAN World Championship, spanning both Kona and Nice, and we are incredibly proud of all that our athletes have achieved in both of these historic and beautiful locations. During these two years, we have sought and received feedback from diverse stakeholders to help us better understand the important role of the IRONMAN World Championship within our community. One thing is clear – the IRONMAN World Championship is the pinnacle of our sport, a celebration of human achievement, and a testament to the passion and commitment of our IRONMAN community.   As we look to the long-term future of the IRONMAN World Championship, we are committed to listening to and learning from our community. In this spirit, we would like your input as a valued member of our IRONMAN `ohana. Your feedback will form part of the ongoing inputs we will continue to collect as we envision the long-term future of the IRONMAN World Championship.    Would You Rather? -  Colorado Triathlete Edition   1. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by thru-hiker and Trek Writer, Katie Jackson, known on trail as Double Dip. Katie gives us an in depth breakdown of her recent thru-hike of the Continental Divide Trail, including why she advocates that hikers not take the Creede cutoff, her experience of a wild storm so intense that lightning struck and killed nearby cows, the challenge of losing her hiking partner early on, hiking on an injured foot for hundreds of miles- and how it was miraculously healed in some hot springs, waking up to grizzles in her camp, and much more. Katie also gives some of her backpacking hot takes, including how the Colorado Trail is superior to the JMT. We wrap the show with whether it'll be possible to thru-hike the AT in 2025, the incredible phenomenon that is Frito feet, my new depressing thing of the week, and the triple crown of places where a long trail should exist. S10:E7 – That John Denver knew what he was talking about… After enjoying the Rocky Mountains for years, we finally made our way into the official Rocky Mountain National Park, where we were immediately blown away by the wildlife sightings. In addition to a morning hike in the Bear Lake area, we also made our way up Trail Ridge Road, the highest road in America, and enjoyed the glamour of The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park. I was so excited to go to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Colorado because I knew nothing about it! I am very type A and usually know where we are going to hike, what we will see, and pit stops for along the way. All I really knew going into Black Canyon is that hiking to the river is steep & we had campsite 27A booked for 2 nights. Turns out, the park blew me away! I was also very exited to return to Rocky Mountain National Park and show Hayden around for his first time. We camped in the National Forest just outside of the park, and it ended up being my favorite site of the trip! Join us as we take you on an epic road trip to all four of Colorado's national parks!   These four parks are incredibly diverse, and this trip will have you driving through alpine forests in the Rocky Mountains, hiking up the tallest sand dunes in North America, climbing ladders as you explore cultural treasures, and standing on the rim of a seemingly bottomless dark canyon.   We've organized this episode with the road trip starting in Denver and driving clockwise around the state, but you can pick up our trail anywhere along the loop. And we've made suggestions for several add-on sites you'll also want to consider, including Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, Chimney Rock National Monument, and a mountain pass highway in southwest Colorado with million-dollar views.   Summer is here, and it's time to hit the road. And we have the perfect itinerary planned for you – coming up!   Here are a few helpful links related to this episode: ·     Where to get Mesa Verde NP tour tickets ·     A link to Pike Peak's website where you can buy visitor and vehicle timed-entry tickets ·     More information about Rocky Mountain National Park's timed entry permit program ·     Link to our Patreon account   The best way to support our podcast is to become a member of our Patreon account.
