Hammama trauma! Harry Styles! Helicopters! How to shower! And the life-changing art of Japanese Misogi! Episode 16 is all about getting as comfy as possible…but also, it's about stepping out of our comfort zones! One of the scariest and most fun things about stepping out of your comfort zone is that you never really know what's going to happen: you might discover a new hobby, you might score a new job, you might even meet your spouse! Ultimately, that's what it means to step from the known into the unknown - you're trying something new, taking a chance, and that always involves a bit of risk - you just never know what is going to happen and that's okay! Oftentimes, stepping out of your safe little bubble is terrifying, it's true. But it can also be thrilling and super valuable in your own journey of discovery and growth! Sewer snakes! Sinkholes! Social Anxiety! Episode 14 of Friday Candy the Podcast is all about fear! No question about it, there is a lot of scary stuff out there in the world! And on today's show, we are wandering into the deep dark forest of the sub-conscious to try and discover the sources of our fears, the strange and ridiculous ways in which they manifest in everyday life, and how we might confront and conquer the monsters that scare us! Fear is really a fascinating thing. It can truly come in so many forms - both rational and irrational. It starts in our minds, but it can also overtake our bodies. Fear can stop us from taking risks but it can also help to spike the adrenaline that we need to run away from a mountain lion. At times, fear can save your life…but it can also stop you from living your life. Episode Credits Friday Candy was created and hosted by Ashlyn and Austin Sailsbury. That's Us! Life's big questions! The wheel of destiny! Apricots! Peaches! Figs! A self-care nightmare! Baby #3! This is our 'sexiest' episode yet! . Episode 10 of Friday Candy The Podcast is all about making decisions: good decisions, bad decisions, even ‘non-decision decisions.' Every day of our lives is full of decisions - from the minor to the major. This constant decision making can be exhilarating, sure, but it can also be exhausting. So, rather than giving into decision fatigue, we thought, let's have some fun with all this deciding! In the end, Austin and I found that this was a very fun and fascinating topic to discuss…but, of course, you will have to decide for yourself if you agree. . And that's the end of season one of Friday Candy the Podcast! Thank you so much for listening, it has been such a joy to create these first ten episodes for you. Quicksand! Pickles! Licorice! Dolly Parton! And lots of DUNKS! Episode 08 of Friday Candy the Podcast is all about change - specifically, how our ideas and perspectives change over time; as we grow up and gain new knowledge and experiences. Sometimes, this change is as easy as giving a second chance to a food that used to ick you out. Other times, in order to change, we need to acknowledge that we were wrong before we can move on. This might mean apologizing to someone or asking for forgiveness. Or it might just mean being truly honest with ourselves. I used to think or feel one way, but now I have new information and my thinking has changed. And that's okay. Friday Candy was created and hosted by Ashlyn and Austin Sailsbury. That's Us! Whether that's teaching, raising kids, building decks, or decoding ancient messages like Indiana Jones - there are about a million jobs out there and, honestly, most of them are pretty fascinating. So whatever kind of work you do, or wherever you are in your personal career journey, we hope that today's show inspires you to keep on keeping on! Marina Shifrin, writer of Pickled Herring, and Bryan Simpson and Taylor Simpson, creators of Creating Things. This conversation was recorded as part of a special live podcast and film screening event we held last month at the Library. The filmmakers—who grew up here in Deerfield—all traveled home to share their films and an illuminating panel discussion with an audience of community members, friends, and family. You'll hear how Marina, Bryan, and Taylor all reconnected on the film festival circuit, as well as entertaining and deeply felt reflections on the surprising thematic connections between the films, which both center on fathers and the power of translating life into art. The documentary Creating Things (2022) was created by brothers Bryan Simpson and Taylor Simpson and uses clips from an interview with their late father, Roger Simpson, in which he shares his personal philosophy of creativity as an artist, creative director, and person. Set to Taylor's beautiful score, and featuring pieces of art and family mementos, it is a moving exploration of art-making and legacy. Creating Things won Best Documentary at the 2023 Pittsburgh Shorts film festival. We are honored to announce that Bryan and Taylor have made Creating Things available to stream for free on their website as of our podcast release, in celebration of their father's birthday. Pickled Herring (2023), written by our guest Marina Shifrin, and directed by and starring Milana Vayntrub, tells the autobiographical story of a woman who has a major accident requiring assistance for her basic needs. Enter her Russian immigrant father, who has ideas of his own on how to help, from finding the best Russian foods or fixing her garage to cultural clashes over family, lifestyle, and art. Pickled Herring won Best Narrative Short at the Santa Clara International Film Festival. You can watch the trailer of Pickled Herring on Marina's website. Marina has written about her father before, including in her book of essays 30 Before 30: How I Made a Mess of My 20s and You Can Too. Listen to our 2019 podcast conversation with Marina on 30 Before 30, or check it out here at the Library. Blog post: https://www.deerfieldlibrary.org/deerfield-filmmakers/ We hope you enjoy our 63rd interview episode! We had a great conversation with Maddie Poppe Season 16 American Idol Winner on The Chris & Sandy Show. We talked about may things from music, sacrifices, she told some really great stories especially on the side of music no one really talks about plus a whole lot more! Just like the 1st time we had her on the show, she was straight up authentic and raw which we love that about her!Unless you've experienced it firsthand, there's no way to understand just how dramatically instant fame can mess with your head. Maddie Poppe went through all kinds of emotions — from elation to self-doubt — after winning American Idol in 2018, releasing her debut album Whirlwind the following year, and then ultimately watching in amazement as many of the people in her creative orbit dropped away. Despite the momentum from a pair of hit singles, “Made You Miss” and “Not Losing You,” Maddie found herself alone, and her future as an artist uncertain.“There were so many times I felt I had the rug pulled out from under me. Like the minute any momentum had built up, it came crumbling back down. From losing team members to seeing crucial opportunities fall through, I found myself feeling so helpless and thinking, ‘How am I going to do this on my own?' It felt like I was standing at the bottom of a mountain I was too afraid to climb,” Maddie says. “It took some time, but I finally realized I didn't have a choice, my fate was in my own hands. I had to face my fears, rise above. The Iowa native, who captured the attention of fans with her folksy singer-songwriter style, did exactly that by giving herself the grace to evolve. While Maddie, now 24, can still very much bowl over a crowd with only her honeyed voice and acoustic guitar, she's upped her game by tapping into a modern sound that blends R&B, pop, and Americana, and by committing herself to writing her own songs. On her irresistible new single “One That Got Away,” Maddie writes about the dissolution of a friend's longtime relationship, predicting that the guy who foolishly dumped her will realize he threw away something great. But the song — a soulful jam with shades of Bruno Mars and Maroon 5 — can also be seen as a commentary on Maddie's own experience in the music industry. Working with L.A. producer Scott Robinson and Nashville's David Spencer, along with hit songwriters like Molly Reed Grayson, Bryan Simpson, and Thomas Finchum, Maddie has been constantly coming up with new ideas, both lyrically and musically. The deceptively upbeat “Good Soldier” is about the expectations and rules you're supposed to adhere to in life and why it sometimes pays to not fall in line. “Good Enough to Let You Go,” meanwhile, begs an addiction — be it a lover or a vice — to break your heart and set you free. Unlike the tracks selected for her on her debut LP, each new song is rich in Maddie's own voice."I'm very proud of Whirlwind, but I feel like this new project speaks truer to me and my story,” she says. “When you're just starting out like I was then, it can feel like 100 different people are trying to tell your story. Now, I'm finally telling it in my own voice.”Maddie has a lot to tell. Hand-in-hand with her American Idol victory, she won a People's Choice Award for her turn on the show, had Whirlwind hit Number 2 on the iTunes Pop Charts, and went on to become a hot guest on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Live With Kelly & Ryan and Good Morning America. All of this in addition to touring the country opening for Ingrid Michaelson and headlining her own tours, including a Christmas run that has become a seasonal “must” for Maddie's fans. With a newfound momentum and passion for music, Maddie is ready to play her new material onstage. She's plotting a tour to introduce fans to the sound she's created, one shaped by the diverse artists she's been listening to: Lily Allen, Sheryl Crow, and Corinne Bailey Rae are all in rotation."I'm thrilled to be releasing new music, but I'm even more excited to play these songs live,” Maddie says. “Almost everything I'm writing is upbeat and will be so much fun to perform with the energy of a live audience."“It's so important to be true to yourself and in doing so, the right audience will find you,” she adds. “For a long time, I simply thought of myself as the singer-songwriter, hometown girl from Iowa. But along the way I learned to spread my wings and branch out. I truly feel I've become the artist I was meant to be.”#AmericanIdol #Winner #MaddiePoppe

What a blast listening to him and playing music together. - Warren Haynes, The Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule Matt,TheBanjoPlayer’s name might be simple but the music of the man that wears the moniker is anything but. Rare is the musician that possesses such a strange ability to blend and intersect the complicated nuances of the head with the passionate sways of the heart. And somehow incorporate them with subtlety and power. Transforming an age old instrument into something more like a five string version of Doc Brown’s time-traveling Delorean. Seamlessly dancing back and forth between traditional sounds and future-seeking modern motifs. Lauded by Grammy award-winning banjo player Winston Marshall of Mumford and Sons as his ‘‘biggest inspiration on the banjo'“, MATT’s other-worldly banjo playing has received praise from all corners of the musical universe. His unique approach to the 5-string has led him to record and perform with such luminaries as Béla Fleck, Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Douglas, and Mumford And Sons; just to name a few. First introduced to the banjo through his grandpas love for bluegrass music, Matt connected quickly with the instrument. And at 17 his coming out party included winning the prestigious Winfield National Banjo Championship. From there he co-founded two critically acclaimed bluegrass-acoustic super groups Cadillac Sky and Chess Boxer and circled the planet with his banjo in hand. Around the same time that Matt was studying the works of Earl Scruggs and Béla Fleck, Matt was also falling in love with the music in video games. Before long Shuckin’ the Corn was cross breeding with Sonic the Hedgehog and in 2018 he decided to combine his most powerful musical influences - video game music and bluegrass - and recorded a record under the name The Hit Points of which Higher Plain Music called The Hit Points debut the ‘Biggest surprise of 2018 to date’ and Gamasutra recognized that The Hit Points gave listeners ‘the album they never knew they needed’. As FiveSpeedbanjo.com put it, ‘Clark Kent climbs into a phone booth and transforms into The Man of Steel, Matt Menefee climbs into a banjo case and becomes MATT, TheBanjoPlayer.’ Whether it’s carving out sonic spaces within genres as diverse as hip hop, rock, EDM, Jazz, or classical music, or colluding with former C-Sky bandmate Bryan Simpson to create the Alt-bluegrass sounds of The Golden Age or continuing to integrate the compositions of video games with the sounds of bluegrass, MATT, TheBanjoPlayer is just beginning to come into his own. Whether it’s as MATT, TheBanjoPlayer or MATT, TheBanjoPlayer Plays Video Games he is changing the colors and sounds that have for so long ear-marked the banjo. Be on the lookout for MATT, TheBanjoPlayer.Matt is technically one of the best musicians I have ever worked with. Yes, he is very gifted, but also he works non-stop at his craft. - John Cowan, founding member of New Grass Revival

Craft Brew News - 5/3/2019Craft Brew Alliance Agrees to Settle Kona Labeling DisputeCraft Brew Alliance (CBA) has agreed to settle a years-long class action lawsuit over alleged “false and deceptive advertising” of its Kona Brewing beer brand. In an SEC filing, the publicly traded Portland, Oregon-based craft beer company – today said it expects to incur costs of about $4.7 million to settle the dispute, which surfaced in early 2017.That amount is inclusive of all legal and administrative fees but does not represent the total amount CBA will pay to the class, according to Marcus Reed, the company’s general counsel.According to Reed, the nationwide settlement will be open to consumers who purchased Kona-branded beer products dating as far back as 2013.The original complaint alleged that CBA, “intentionally misleads consumers into believing that Kona Brewing Company beer is a local beer made in Hawaii.”Although CBA maintains a production facility in Hawaii and produces thousands of barrels on the island, it produces a majority of the Kona beer sold in the continental U.S. at facilities in Portland, Oregon, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and at an Anheuser-Busch brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado.Speaking to Brewbound, Reed said the company agreed to a settlement after two years of litigation because it was becoming a “distraction” to the company’s day-to-day business.“It got to the point where it was time to reach a settlement,” he said.Canada’s Moosehead Breweries Enters Cannabis Sector in JV with SproutlyCanada’s oldest and largest independent brewery is getting into the cannabis business.Moosehead Breweries Limited and Sproutly Canada, which aims to become the leading supplier of water-soluble cannabis solutions, yesterday announced their intent to form an exclusive joint venture that will develop, produce and market cannabis-infused beverages. In the release, Moosehead CEO Andrew Oland said Sproutly’s proprietary “Infuz2O” process for delivering cannabis effects within five minutes drove the brewery’s interest in entering the cannabis market.Recreational use of cannabis was legalized in Canada last October, however, the sale of edibles and infused beverages are not currently permitted. Legalization of those products is expected to occur on October 17.Moosehead joins a growing list of beer manufacturers that have already invested in the cannabis space. Large beer companies such as Anheuser-Busch InBev (Tilray), Constellation Brands (Canopy Growth) and Molson Coors (Hexo) have each struck partnerships with other Canadian cannabis companies. Hamilton, Ontario-based Collective Arts Brewing has also established a sister company called Collective Project Limited to develop and sell cannabis-infused beverages.Cannabis is not federally legal in the U.S., however 10 states — Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, and Washington, D.C. — have established laws permitting the sale and use of recreational cannabis within their borders. Several other states are currently working to decriminalize and legalize cannabis.Meeting of the Malts: Pennsylvania Craft Beer Production Tops in the NationFor the third consecutive year, Pennsylvania produced more craft beer than any other state in the nation, Brewers Association chief economist Bart Watson shared during the Brewers of Pennsylvania’s annual Meeting of the Malts gathering in Hershey, Pennsylvania. (Check out Craft Beer Storm – Episode # 41 with Bart Watson!)In 2018, Pennsylvania’s 354 craft breweries combined to produce more than 3.7 million barrels of beer. And, according to Watson, the state ranked second in the number of brewery openings, trailing just California. Most of that growth, Watson said, is coming from the small breweries that sell directly to consumers.Direct-to-consumer sales at Pennsylvania breweries increased by 15,000 barrels last year, Watson said. He added that Pennsylvania brewers have room to grow as national taproom sales accounted for about 12.5 percent of beer sales.Looking at the national landscape, Watson said he believes there will be 10,000 breweries in operation in the U.S. within the next two years. In 2018, a record number 7,346 breweries operated for all or part of the year.As more breweries have opened, the median size of all beer companies has shrunk to 400 barrels, Watson said. He added that half of the breweries in the country produce 400 barrels or fewer. However, Watson said craft brewers have the opportunity to buck those trends and grow over the next decade as millennials “age into beer, rather than aging out of beer like previous generations.”Veteran New Belgium Communications Director to Depart on May 10Longtime New Belgium Brewing spokesman Bryan Simpson will depart the company on May 10, Brewbound has learned. (Founder is Kim Jordan)“It’s been an absolute honor to represent this brewery and everyone’s collective love and talent,” he said via a statement.Leah Pilcer-Pitman, who most recently served as New Belgium’s director of retail development and strategy, will supplant Simpson as director of communications.Simpson, who spent 21-years with the country’s fourth largest craft beer company, said he will launch his own boutique digital media agency this summer.“I’ll be moving on to pursue my long-deferred dream of creative film and media production, and I will always be a passionate and vocal fan of New Belgium Brewing and the entire craft brewing industry,” he said via the statement.Speaking to Brewbound, Simpson said his yet-to-be-named agency would focus on “content generation” and the creation of “digital and web assets.”Simpson, one of New Belgium’s longest-tenured employees, joined the company in July 1997. At the time, New Belgium produced about 80,000 barrels of beer, its offerings were distributed in just five Western states, and the entire craft brewing industry comprised fewer than 1,100 breweries that collectively produced 5 million barrels.Today, more than 7,300 breweries make nearly 26 million barrels of craft beer, according to industry trade group the Brewers Association. For its part, New Belgium, now the fourth-largest U.S. craft brewery according to industry trade group the Brewers Association, produced 846,000 barrels of beer in 2018, down from 955,000 barrels in 2017. The company distributes to 50 states.“I was literally hired on the bottling line, and then I worked in the tasting room for one-to-two years, but at that time everyone was doing a bit of everything,” he said.Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel. In June of 2018, the 50 Campfires team was fortunate to spend a day in Fort Collins, Colorado - and hang out at the New Belgium Brewery. While we were familiar with New Belgium, and have drank our fair share of their beers over the years, we were less familiar with the employee-owned business model that the brewery was founded under. The story of how New Belgium started and continues to operate to this day was a story that we knew we had to share...with you. I hope you enjoy this one-on-one interview with Bryan Simpson, a long standing employee owner of the New Belgium Brewing Company. The Whistles & the Bells – alt-rock moniker of acclaimed singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Bryan Simpson – has revealed a “dark but beautifully poetic” new single, “Ode To Yeezus / Ultralight Beam,” which EARMILK is premiered last week. They call the track “a somber tune that blurs the line between songwriter and mad-man producer,” and state, "Simpson takes a very real moment in Kanye West’s life to create a sonic reflection on the current state of this social media/often shallow world we're living in...It's an evocative look at how too often we forget that artists, like Kanye, are real people with human struggles and that their personal battles aren't just catchy headlines to them," adding, “Be sure to turn the lights down, put these songs on and sip a glass of red wine because that is the best way to enjoy this beautiful, strange magic."
