This podcast covers New Girl Season 2, Episode 15, Cooler, which originally aired on January 29, 2013 and was written by Rebecca Addelman and directed by Max Winkler. Here's a quick recap of the episode:The guys determine they're all ready to have sex again and have a night out togther. However, Jess gets paranoid while she's home alone, and makes the guys come home early. She tries to show them she's not a “cooler” so they play their second on-screen game of True American, which leads to an exciting predicament for Jess and Nick shippers… We discuss Pop Culture References such as:Abu Nazir (Homeland) - During the game of True American, Schmidt calls out “Abu Nazir” who is a fictional character from the TV Show Homeland. Inspector Gadget - When trying to get Nick to kiss Jess, they encourage him to inspect her tonsils like Inspector Gadget. Additional Pop Culture References such as:Band of Brothers - When they guys see Holly at the bar, they confirm they're like the group from Band of Brothers. Band of Brothers is a dramatized account of "Easy Company", assigned to the United States Army's 101st Airborne Division during World War II. Gang related / Crips - Jess heard the sounds at the door and was worried it was gang related. She was also concerned about her blue curtains and whispered “Crips” when on the phone with Nick. The Crips are a gang based in the coastal regions of southern California whose members traditionally wear blue clothing. “I am not a crook” - During the True American game the loft calls out “I am not a crook”. Amid charges for the Watergate scandal, President Richard Nixon infamously said, "I am not a crook" during a press conference in Orlando, Florida. We also cover Schmidt's dismissal of Shivrang's “English” accent as our “Schmidtism” this episode as well as give Schmidt's dancing an honorary Schmidtism. In our “not in the 2020s” section we talk about how Schmidt makes light of Nick being sad. We also discuss how Cece “lying” for Schmidt so he can move on is a “yes in the 2020s” moment as well as how comfortable Sam was in his relationship with Jess. We also explore the careers of Brooklyn Decker (Holly), Sal Stowers (Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Girl), and Andree Vermeulen (Beth), the guest stars of this episode. Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: David Walton (Sam - discussed on S2E3), M. Hasna M. (a movie-goer), Jocelyn Osorio (Andrea), Katie Wee (Palm Reading Girl), Brenda Song (Daisy), and Satya Bhabha (Shivrang).Additionally in the podcast we discuss how the beer that the loft is drinking is Heisler beer and mention a few other shows that also use this fake beer brand. We had also previously included links to find “instructions” on how to play True American on S1E20's show notes which can be found here. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:London Fog - Schmidt refers to Nick as London Fog, telling him he's “hot to trot”. London Fog is an American coat manufacturer known for making trench coats, raincoats, jackets, and parkas. London Fog was also a nightclub in the 1960 in Los Angeles and is a hot tea-based drink including Earl Grey tea, milk, and vanilla syrup.401(k) - When Nick is trying to convince Holly that Schmidt is happy he mentions that he has a 401(k) which is an employer-sponsored pension plan where employees can deposit into their retirement funds directly from their paycheck and is sometimes matched by their employers. There are two main kinds including an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) and tax exempt or EET.Throughout the game of True American, there were many historical and political references such as:Clinton - Bill Clinton was a former US president who was impeached after lying to a grand jury about his affair with Monica Lewinsky, who was at the time a White House intern.Joe Biden - Joseph Biden Jr. was born in 1942 and was elected the 46th President of the United States in 2021. Prior to his time as President he was also the Vice President of the United States and the Delaware Senator for 36 years, being sworn in just after he turned 30.Howard Dean Scream - Howard Dean is a retired American politician who was the Governor of Vermont from 1991 to 2003 and is also a physician, author, and lobbyist. When he was a Presidential Candidate in 2004, he lost the Iowa Caucus to John Kerry and while reassuring his supporters listed out the states he would win and screamed “Yeah!” which became popularly known after it was broadcasted over 600 times in the next 4 days.Hawley-Smoot Tariff - This is a United States tariff in 1930 that was passed to help American farmers by raising taxes on imports by up to 20%. The stock market did not react favorably to its passage and the timing coincides with the start of the Great Depression as the tariff raised prices that led to other countries having retaliatory tariffs on US goods as well.Mulligan - This is a golf term that means the second attempt after the first one didn't work. The earliest known use of the term is from 1931 in a daily newspaper in Detroit and most believe that the term came from a golfer with the last name Mulligan.Iron Curtain - This is the political and military barrier that the Soviet Union created after World War II to keep itself from the Western and non communist countries. Although it had been used sparingly since the 19th century, Winston Churchill, the British prime minister, used the term in a speech in 1946 which solidified the usage of the term.“Amber Waves of Grain” - This is a lyric from an American patriotic song called “America the Beautiful” which refers to fields in the plains area where wheat (which is golden in color) is grown. The song was written by Katharine Lee Bates in 1893 and was set to music and officially titled “America the Beautiful” in 1910.Mason-Dixon Line - This was a line separating the borders of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and West Virginia which also was seen as the border between the North and the South during the American Civil War. It originated when Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon surveyed the land in the 1760s to solve a border dispute which had been going on for almost a century.Gettysburg - This was a battle during the American Civil War fought in July 1863 which is described as the war's turning point and involved the largest number of casualties in one battle in the entire war. It is also the location where President Lincoln gave his famous speech, the Gettysburg Address.Bull Run - This battle was the first major battle of the American Civil War in July 1861. This battle caused both sides to realize that this war was going to be much longer and bloodier than anticipated and highlighted many of the problems that were typical during the first year of the American Civil War.This episode got a 10/10 Rating from both Kritika and Kelly and we both had the same favorite character: Nick! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 16!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/
Part of being a machine shop owner—and a business owner in general—is that every day there's a new challenge to navigate. A machine might break down. Perhaps someone who has been a team member for decades quits. Your factory could burn to the ground. Or your Dad—the owner and manager of the shop—gets sick with cancer. That's how Nick Sainati was thrust into becoming the GM of Belden Universal. In this episode, he shares his journey. It will resonate with some of us, fascinate most of us, and impress all of us. They started in 1970 as Belden Tools, founded by Nick's grandfather and his brothers on Belden Avenue in Chicago. They used to buy tools from ZENGERS, which was just down the street! Instead of going into the family business, Nick ended up in San Francisco in investment banking. He spent two years at an eCommerce startup and eventually moved back to Chicago. After both he and his wife got an MBA, they moved to Seattle for her job. After running a wine business, Nick transitioned into Starbucks Corporate in brand management. He helped launch the Starbucks evening program that tied-in with wine. He transitioned to a strategy team after that. He learned about culture, managing people, and running complex projects. How Nick took over his Dad's machine shop Two months after Nick's first daughter was born, his parents came to visit them in Seattle. They told Nick that his Dad had a rare form of Leukemia. He needed to take time off of work for treatment. They were going to have to sell the business unless Nick or his sister could come back and run it. Nick was shocked. His parents were healthy active people who were never sick. After processing the news and discussing it with his wife, Nick decided to move back to Chicago to take over Belden Universal, an AS9100 manufacturer of precision universal joints and drive shafts. Four months later, he was in Chicago running a machine shop—and he knew nothing about manufacturing. Nick bought a large book about manufacturing that was for a college-level manufacturing class and dug into back episodes of Making Chips, which helped him get immersed in the language of machining. Navigating challenges while learning the ropes When Nick took over in 2018, the machine shop had just moved into a new facility, doubling the size of their manufacturing floor. They had a tenured team and people to help get Nick up to speed. But he was also their boss—and couldn't do most of their jobs. Soon after taking over, Belden lost their biggest customer—which was one of the reasons they had moved into the bigger space. They immediately lost what would have been ¼ of their business. Nick knew it would be his first challenge. But then his sales manager of 19 years quit three months in. Instead of panicking, he took stock of the situation and helped define where they wanted to go in the future. They hired an internal candidate for the sales management position. She blossomed as a leader and got their team back on track. They worked hand-in-hand on the culture so people were excited to come to work every day. In an era like today where every shop is competing for employees, the culture matters. A shop can't survive with a negative culture. 18 months later, after continuous incidents with the production manager (who had been there 29 years), Nick decided it was time to part ways. They let him go. But this man had been involved in every part of the business. The benefit of letting him go was that Nick was forced to get more involved in floor operations. He began to work closely with his engineers on improvement projects and personnel issues. He got to know the people on the factory floor. He stepped up and earned respect from his team. How did Nick manage the machine shop through COVID? What does the future hold for Belden Universal? Listen to the whole episode to hear more of his unique story. How Nick's experiences have prepared him for the future What did Nick learn? The most important thing is that problems can look very daunting in the moment—especially multi-faceted problems. But the most important thing is to take a break, formulate a plan, understand what the desired end outcome is, and start chipping away at it. Family businesses have long timelines where things don't have to be solved overnight. They can make progress every day, month, and year towards that vision. Eventually they will find success. A problem now may seem like a bump in the road over the arc of your career. — BAM! Resources mentioned on this episode Get The Boring Bar Newsletter - Text CHIPS to 38470 to subscribe! In the 95 days that Nick spent fighting for his life in the ICU, Amanda shared updates to her social media, rallying a rapidly growing community of supporters around her. She stayed infectiously positive as she urged her followers to sing and dance to Nick's music, and ultimately created a movement around the hashtag #WakeUpNick. On July 5, 2020, Nick passed. Welcome to episode #60!In this week's episode, Nick Stumbo, Executive Director of Pure Desire Ministries, shares his story and talks about how to break free from a culture of shame.Trying harder doesn't workAttempting to beat porn in a a try harder mentality leads to a binge purge cycle, and it led Nick to years of struggling behind closed doors and being bogged down in shame and guilt. When we focus on just the behaviour, it becomes about managing a problem on the surface level, but true freedom comes with inner healing which is where the root of the problem is located. Porn is just a coping mechanism to deal with pain, trauma, or even emotion that we don't know how to deal with or regulate well. When Nick dealt with the root, that is when he began to experience true and lasting freedom.Being in a group is vital to healingFor Nick, being part of a group helped him to learn about the underlying issues about his porn use, and when he was honest and vulnerable in a group it helps others as well! We need a group to help us learn and heal, and it breaks us out of the isolation that we tend to hide in when we are struggling with porn. To join a pure desire group click here.Shame attacks us to the core Guilt revolves around the idea that we did something wrong, whereas shame makes us think that there is something wrong with us. It attacks our identity, our sense of worth and it leaves us feeling like we have no value and that we don't have anything worthwhile to give. These are lies that make a porn addiction so harmful, because we feel like the only place that sense of worthlessness is masked over is when we look at porn. This creates a downward spiral that is really hard to come back from until we deal with the sense of shame in our lives. This podcast covers New Girl Season 2, Episode 5, Models, which originally aired on October 23, 2012 and was written by Josh Malmuth and directed by Eric Appel. Here's a quick recap of the episode:It's Cece's birthday and Jess comes to celebrate but clashes with her model friends. They get in a fight that leaves their boobs sore and also leads to Cece getting drunk and almost missing her modeling gig. Being the amazing friend she is, Jess fills in… This is also the episode where Schmidt buys Nick a cookie. We discuss Pop Culture References such as:Clueless - Jess and Cece have a tradition to watch Clueless for Cece's birthday every year. Jay Cutler - Nick tells Schmidt the only time a man is allowed to think about another man is when that man is Jay Cutler. Additional Pop Culture References such as:YOLO - Nadia yells “YOLO” when Jess agrees to go out with Cece and her friends for her birthday. YOLO stands for You Only Live Once and along the same lines as the Latin phrase “carpe diem,” it is a call to live life to its fullest extent, even embracing behavior which carries some risk.Serena Williams - Nick calls Schmidt Serena Williams because he thought Schmidt was grunting at him. Serena Williams is an American professional tennis player. She has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the second-most of all time. Tennis players often grunt when hitting the ball.Wilmer Valderrama - After going out for Cece's birthday, Nadia thought she hooked up with Wilmer Valderrama. Wilmer Eduardo Valderrama is an American actor, producer, singer, and television personality. He is known for his role as Fez in That '70s Show and as Carlos Madrigal in From Dusk till Dawn: The Series.“You Make My Dreams” - When Jess tries to model at the Ford car event, the song “You Make My Dreams” by Hall & Oates plays. "You Make My Dreams", sometimes incorrectly referred to as "You Make My Dreams Come True" is from the band's ninth studio album, Voices. The song reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1981.Brian Austin Green - In the flashback scene, Schmidt mentions that Brian Austin Green is his favorite rapper. Brian Austin Green is an American actor, rapper, and producer, best known for his portrayal of David Silver on the original television series Beverly Hills, 90210. He is not typically known for his rapping and this was more of a joke for New Girl to make."shake what yo mamma gave ya" - When Nadia was trying to convince Cece to go out instead of doing her usual birthday tradition, she said “I shake this thing that my mama gave me”. This phrase means to shake your butt and came from the song “Shake Whatcha Mamma Gave Ye” by Poison Clan released in 1992.We also cover when Schmidt gave Nick a cookie at the beginning of the episode as the “Schmidtism” this episode. We talk about how the show portrays the models and Jess speaking about all models being “dumb” as our “not in the 2020s” and how Nick was making fun of Schmidt in the flashbacks. Our “yes in the 2020s” was about all the love in this episode with how Winston and Schmidt loved Nick and how Nick reciprocated by the end of the episode with his cookie shaped like a Jewish star. We also give a brief look into Lauren Dair Owens (young Jess) and Ariela Barer (young Cece), the Guest Stars we feature in this episode. Lauren's youtube page can be found here. Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: Stone Eisenmann (Young Nick), Jordan Fuller (Young Winston), Jason Antoon (the Clipboard Guy), James M. Connor (Gary), Rob Reinis (the account executive), Agnes Albright (Olga), Britni Stanwood (a foreign model), Greice Santo (Maria), Jesus Solorio (the fake Wilmer Valderrama), and Johanna Parker (the model scout). In the podcast, we also discussed Zooey's recent instagram post about having a forehead and the song “You Make My Dreams'' by Hall and Oates and its significance to 500 Days of Summer. Additionally, we noticed Schmidt continuing to look at his actuarial chart from Episode 4 and anniversary themes by years. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:VHS - When Jess shows up at Cece's house to celebrate her birthday, she talks about watching Clueless on VHS. VHS stands for Video Home System and was a standard for analog video recording on tape cassettes. Production of the magnetic tape video recording began in the 1950s and it was the primary home video format through the 1980s. In 1996, the DVD format was introduced and VHS production began to decline and by July of 2016, all VHS equipment manufacturing had stopped.Turtles - Throughout this episode Nick is looking at getting a turtle and he mentions the following types of turtles:Galapagos Tortoise - This is the largest living species group of 15 very large tortoises. Their lifespans in the wild can be over 100 years old and there has been one tortoise who, in captivity, lived to be at least 175 years old.Eastern Box Turtle - This is a subspecies of the hinge-shelled turtles and is a land turtle native to the eastern parts of the US. In captivity, their life span can be as short as 3 days.Spur Thighed Tortoise - This species of tortoise, also known as the Greek tortoise, is one of 5 species of Mediterranean tortoises. Their lifespan is older than 125 years and while not confirmed, there are reports of some living to be 200 years old.Nearsighted Loner Turtle - While there isn't a turtle specifically called a “nearsighted loner,” the mata mata freshwater turtle species is a natural loner and has good nearsighted vision. It's primarily found in South America and in captivity, there have been reports of turtles living 30-35 years but there is not a lot of information about the mata mata's lifespan in the wild.Jewish Star - When Nick brings Schmidt a cookie, he says that he couldn't find one in the shape of a Jewish star and so he broke it into the pieces. This is a reference to the Star of David which is a modern symbol of Jewish identity and Judaism and is a star made up of two equilateral triangles.Joie de vivre - Schmidt said that Jess has too much “joie de vivre” when Jess is getting ready to go out with Cece and her model friends. This is a French phrase that means to enjoy life. Casual uses of the phrase can be dated back to the late 17th century although it was brought to prominence in the 19th century.Mama-bird - When Nick says he would be happy if he could throw up the cookie that Schmidt gave him and then feed it to Schmidt, Schmidt asks if Nick was trying to mama-bird him the cookie. This is a reference to how mother birds first digest their food and then feed it to their babies. This episode got a 7.5/10 rating from Kritika and an 8/10 from Kelly and both had the same favorite character: Nick! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 6!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/

Fraiser was created as a spin-off of the TV show Cheers, continuing the story of psychiatrist Frasier Crane as he returned to his hometown of Seattle and started building a new life as a radio advice show host while reconnecting with his father and brother and making new friends.Dolla-dolla bills, y'all - Schmidt mentions he’ll be at the neighbors party with bells on, and then makes a bad reference to the phrase ‘Dolla Dolla Bills, Y’all’ by instead saying ‘Dolla Dolla Bells Y’all’. This phrase is made known from the lyrics of the 1993 song C.R.E.A.M by Wu-Tang Clan. This phrase has also gone on to become a larger part of internet culture.[Jewish] Peter Pan - Schmidt mentions he’ll never stop growing and that he’s like a Jewish Peter Pan (that he also phrases as “Petya Pan”, “Petter Pan”, and “Pesach Pan”). Created by Scottish novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie, Peter Pan is a fictional character that is a free-spirited and mischievous young boy who can fly and never grows up. This Screen Rant article also compares the entire show New Girl to Peter Pan (note: there are spoilers in this article).Gran Torino (as in referring to Clint Eastwood being old) - When Nick is trying to talk to Schmidt in the middle of his spiral about the neighbors thinking he’s old, Schmidt calls Nick Gran Torino. Gran Torino is an American drama film directed and produced by Clint Eastwood, who also starred in the film and plays an older man.Top Gun / Anthony Eds, the "Goose" man - Schmidt walks into the neighbors’ apartment and sees they are watching the movie Top Gun and calls out the character “Goose” played by the actor Anthony Edwards. Top Gun is a drama movie that follows United States Naval Aviator LT Pete "Maverick" Mitchell and his Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) LTJG Nick "Goose" Bradshaw as they are stationed aboard the USS Enterprise. Hilary Swank - Schmidt mentions that the actor Anthony Edwards is like the Hilary Swank of bald men. Hilary Swank is an American actress and film producer known for her roles in Million Dollar Baby, Boys Don’t Cry -- both of which she has won awards for -- P.S. I Love You, and The Horseman. [F]rank Sinatra - Winston calls himself “Prank” Sinatra after the famed musician Frank Sinatra as if to say he could smoothly pull off pranks. Francis “Frank” Albert Sinatra was an American singer and actor who was one of the most popular and influential musical artists of the 20th century. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 150 million records worldwide.Parkour - Schmidt proclaims Parkour when he is quickly moving around and jumping on items in the apartment. Parkour is a training discipline where people aim to get from one point to another in a complex environment, without assisting equipment and in the fastest and most efficient way possible. We also cover Schmidt’s happiness that the neighbors don’t hate him because of his age but rather his personality as our “Schmidtism”. In the “In the 2020s” section, our “not” was how Schmidt dismissed Nick as a professional because he wasn’t wearing a suit and our “yes” was how the loft were good friends including Schmidt encouraging Jess to follow her passion of teaching and the loft encouraging Winston with his job. We also give a brief look into the careers of Charlie Saxton (Chaz), Morgan Krantz (Fife), Jinny Chung (Sutton), and Jasmine Di Angelo (Brorie), the guest stars of this episode. Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: Stone Eisenmann (Young Nick) and Jordan Fuller (Young Winston). On this episode, we discussed actuarial life expectancy and shared our results from this quiz which we took for fun. We also discuss Schmidt and Nick’s ages being inconsistent through the show so far as well as top pranks within movies listed on this article and youtube link. Lastly, we also mention how Zooey Deschanel has made a guest appearance on the show Frasier who Jess does an impersonation of in the beginning of the episode. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:When Schmidt is sharing that he’s younger and more successful than the rest of the loft, he considers himself Snow Leopard and the rest of the loft DOS.Snow Leopard - This is the 7th major operating release for the Apple operating system for their Macintosh computers. This operating system was released in August of 2009 and the next major release didn’t come until July 2011.DOS - This was a disk operating system that was initially used in IBM PCs but the acronym was used for over a dozen other operating systems in the time frame of the 1960s - 1990s.TGIF - In this episode, Jess mentions that there’s a TGIF marathon on. The TGIF lineup specifically stood for "Thank Goodness It's Funny." and was a block of family friendly comedies from 1989 - 2000, 2003 - 2005, and 2018-2019.Sitar - When the neighbors are trying to invite Jess over, they mention that they have a sitar. The sitar is an Indian string instrument used in Hindustani classical music. It was invented in medieval India and was popularized by the composer Ravi Shankar and was used in the 1960s by bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.Pigskin - When Winston is making his big speech, he compares his job to the “pigskin” in the game of life. Pigskin is slang for a football which was originally inflated with the bladders of animals like pigs that were later covered by leather leading to the term “pigskin”. Footballs that were made from the inflation of pig bladders were replaced in the 1860s when vulcanized rubber was invented. After Schmidt realizes the neighbors don’t like him, he tries to act cooler by doing burpees:Olympics - When Schmidt is doing burpees, the neighbors sarcastically ask when the next Olympics is. The Olympic Games are an international sports competition featuring summer and winter sports where thousands of athletes from around the world compete and represent their countries. They are held every 4 years with either a Summer or Winter Olympics every 2 years.“Set a PR” - When Schmidt is doing burpees, he exclaims that he’s going to “set a PR”. A “PR” is a personal record and is used to evaluate one’s own best performance as a goal to beat in future workout sessions. This episode got a 7/10 Rating from Kritika and a 7.5/10 from Kelly and we both had the same favorite character again: Nick! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 5!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/
This podcast covers New Girl Season 2, Episode 2, Katie, which originally aired on September 25, 2012 and was written by Elizabeth Meriwether and directed by Larry Charles. Here’s a quick recap of the episode:Jess is still spiraling after losing her job, so Nick suggests that Jess go off the grid. She takes advantage of that when she pretends to be Katie, the date of Sam who enters their bar looking for the girl he’s been talking to online. Schmidt spends the entire episode trying to get Winston’s sister to sleep with him and Nick thinks he may have met his future self.We discuss these Pop Culture References:Jess and Nick pondered together who they aspired to be when they would watch MTV growing up. Jenny McCarthy - Jess wanted to be the actress and show host Jenny McCarthy. Kurt Loder - Nick wanted to be the music journalist Kurt Loder. Additional Pop Culture References such as:Shaq Attack - Schmidt told Winston his sister is so hot he’ll have to “Shaq Attack” her. Shaq Attack is the phrase fans used when the professional basketball player, Shaquille O’Neal, would show-off in basketball. Nick mentions that Kurt Loder never went to [MTV’s] Spring Break house because he was busy interviewing Pearl Jam. MTV Spring Break House - From 1987 to the mid-2010s, MTV would host “spring break” parties, typically at houses MTV would rent, featuring numerous live performances from artists in beach towns. Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam is an American Rock Band from Seattle, Washington that furthered the alternative grunge music sound. The Nutty Professor - When Jess shares she wants to remain as Katie, she’s warned about the cautionary tale called The Nutty Professor. The Nutty Professor is a 1996 American slapstick science-fiction comedy film starring Eddie Murphy, who portrays a morbidly obese professor, Sherman Klump, that develops an experimental weight-loss drug and tests it upon himself, hoping to win the affection of the girl of his dreams.Tyra Banks - Schmidt comments there’s “a lot of money he wants to deposit into [Alisha’s] Tyra Banks.” Tyra Banks is an American television personality, model, businesswoman, producer, actress, and writer, known for hosting the TV shows America’s Next Top Model and recently, Dancing with the Stars. L.A. Sparks - Winston’s sister played for the L.A. Sparks basketball team. Unlike Winston’s Latvian basketball team, the Los Angeles Sparks are a real American professional basketball team based in Los Angeles, California.Creed - Sam says he’s been to 48 Creed shows. Creed is an American rock band from Tallahassee, Florida and is often recognized as one of the prominent bands of the post-grunge movement that began in the mid-1990s. When Schmidt is thinking about time traveling, he talks about having a vision of himself meeting with Kanye & Beyoncé. Kanye - Kanye West is an American rapper, record producer, fashion designer, and politician. We dive even deeper to Kanye West in Episode 3 of the podcast!Beyoncé - Beyoncé is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and record producer from Houston, Texas. Beyoncé was also mentioned in Episode 20, Normal, when Napoli wanted his milkshakes Beyoncé colored.Big Momma's House - When Winston’s Mom, Charmaine, comes in, Schmidt comments “it just became Big Momma’s House.” Big Momma's House is a 2000 American comedy film, starring Martin Lawrence as an FBI agent who is tasked with tracking down an escaped convict by going undercover as the estranged grandmother of their former girlfriend, unaware of the bond he will form with her.Leg Warmers - When Nick and Schmidt pretend to be dancers, they joke about wearing Leg Warmers. Leg Warmers are coverings for the lower legs and are often used as dancewear in order to keep the leg muscles warm and prevent cramping.Public Enemy’s “He Got Game” - At the end of the episode when Schmidt was playing basketball with Alisha, this song played. “He Got Game” is both a song and the sixth studio album by American hip hop group Public Enemy. It was originally released as the soundtrack to Spike Lee's 1998 film of the same name and was the group's last album until 2020. Cupid Match - “Cupid Match” is the online dating site Sam claims to have met Katie. While Cupid Match is not real, it’s a mix of OK Cupid and Match. We also cover when Schmidt and Nick discuss Nick’s future self as the “Schmidtism” of the episode. Our “not” for “In the 2020s” was how Schmidt handled being around Winston’s family but our “yes in the 2020s” was the friendship between Nick and Jess and how he leapt around the loft to help her sell the lie that she was Katie. We also explore the careers of Josh Braaten, Josh Gad, and Raymond J. Barry, the guest stars of this episode. Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: Anna Maria Horsford (Charmaine, Winston’s mom), Keenyah Hill (Alisha, Winston’s sister), and David Walton (Sam, who we dive into deeper in Episode 3!)We discussed fun facts including how at Paleyfest 2013 it was noted that Emily Deschanel, Zooey Deschanel’s sister, was originally supposed to have a cameo as Katie in this episode. We also discuss how Winston’s whistle at the restaurant matches the whistle at the end of the theme song and how Lamorne Morris recently admitted to being the whistler on Instagram. Additionally, while their names aren’t spelled the same, we commented how Katy Perry’s new music video was a spoof on the fact that she used to pretend to be Zooey when she first came to Hollywood to get into clubs. Lastly, in our spoiler section, we also mentioned a Reddit post covering Future Nick’s predictions. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:Catnip - Schmidt compares himself to catnip for tough-talking African-American women when speaking to Winston about his mom. Catnip is a plant that is known for the intense attraction that most cats have towards it. It is also popular to be used in herbal teas and valued for its relaxing properties.Phone Booth (Book) - When Bearclaw introduces himself he says that he’s in the phone booth but he meant to say he’s in the phone book. A phone book is a listing of all residents of a certain area with the names of the owners and addresses which would allow users to search a person’s number and address. A phone booth is a cubicle with a payphone in it that allows a user to pay to use the phone. When Nick talks about a world where time travel exists, Schmidt lists the following women [that he would want to sleep with]:Marie Antoinette - Marie Antoinette was the last queen of France before the French Revolution. She was married at the age of 14 to Louis-Auguste, the heir-apparent of the French throne but was very unpopular with her French subjects. She was blamed for France’s financial crisis due to her lavish spending and opposition to reforms. She was known to be a good singer and dancer in addition to being beautiful.Cleopatra - Cleopatra was the last active ruler and queen of the Egyptian Ptolemaic Kingdom. She was Alexander the Great’s companion and was the seventh of her name. Her legacy survives today in ancient and modern works of art and she has become a pop culture of Egyptomania.Ann-Margret - Ann-Margret Olsson is a Swedish-American actress, singer, and dancer. She’s won 5 Golden Globe Awards and an Emmy over her 6 decades in the industry. Initially known as the female version of Elvis Presely, she started to see success in 1961 with a charting album in 1964. In 1995, Empire ranked her 10th on the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history list.Off the Grid - Nick encourages Jess to go “off the grid” in this episode and this is a reference to being untraceable by normal means, such as technology.Old-fashioned - In this episode, Future Nick suggests that Nick make Jess an old-fashioned and say sorry for something he does in the future. This is a cocktail made with bourbon, bitters, and sugar. When Schmidt goes to talk to Winston about his sister he uses the following basketball references:dribbling up the court - Dribbling is an action where a player uses one hand to continuously bounce a basketball without interruption. Traditionally the phrase that is used to refer to dribbling is dribbling down the court not up the court.Technical foul - A technical foul is a penalty given for either unsportsmanlike conduct or other infractions, like excessive timeouts, a delay-of-game, and when there are more players on the court than there should be.Illegal use of the hands - An illegal hand use in basketball is called when a player uses their hands in ways that are not part of the game such as attempting to block a shot, when an opponent drives to the hoop, or when a player puts their arms around another player.“knows how the sausage gets made” - When Jess is talking about how much she loves being Katie, she says that “Katie knows how the sausage gets made.” Sausage is typically made with pork, beef, veal, or poultry but can be made from any animal and can contain almost any part of the animal. This is an idiom to indicate finding out the process behind something that is typically unpleasant but at face-value appears good. This episode got an 8/10 Rating from Kritika whose favorite character was Nick, and Kelly rated this episode a 9/10 and her favorite character was Bearclaw! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 3!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/
This podcast covers New Girl Season 2, Episode 1, Re-Launch, which originally aired on September 25, 2012 and was written by Kay Cannon and directed by Steve Pink. Here’s a quick recap of the episode:This episode not only kicks off Season 2, but celebrates Schmidt having his penis cast removed and in only the way Schmidt can, he throws himself a party to “re-launch” his brand of “Danger” now that he’s no longer “broken penis guy”. Jess meanwhile has been laid off from her job as a teacher and tries to be a shot girl at Schmidt’s party to make some money. Throughout the episode, Nick supports Jess as she works through losing her job. We discuss Pop Culture References such as:“Groove is In the Heart” (Deee-Lite) - At the beginning of the episode, Nick is singing this song in the shower. At the end of the episode, Winston also sings this song while drunk at the bar. Lord of Winterfell (Game of Thrones) - When questioning Robby and Cece’s relationship, Schmidt ponders if Robby is like “the Lord of Winterfell or he's working with a real piece of pipe.”Additional Pop Culture References such as:Morgan Freeman / Shawshank - Winston is trying to convince Nick he’s matured by telling him he’s wearing a suit and Nick comments that his suit is something Morgan Freeman’s character would wear after leaving Shawshank. Morgan Freeman is an American Actor who portrayed the character Ellis Boyd ‘Red’ Redding in the movie Shawshank Redemption, which is a movie about two imprisoned men bonding over a number of years, finding solace, and eventual redemption through acts of common decency.Philip Seymour Hoffman - Schmidt mentioned Philip Seymour Hoffman was invited to his re-launch party. Philip Seymour Hoffman is an American actor, director, and producer. He acted in many films, including leading roles, from the early 1990s until his death in 2014.Crank Yankers - Schmidt mentioned that a writer for a little show called Crank Yankers was invited to his re-launch party. Crank Yankers is an American television show that features actual prank calls made by show regulars and celebrity guests that are re-enacted onscreen by puppets for a visual aid to show the viewer what is happening in the call. The show aired on Comedy Central from 2002-2005 and later aired on MTV2 from 2007-2009. Crank Yankers has returned again on Comedy Central in 2019.Slap Bracelet - After being laid off and getting to take items from the lost and found box, Jess mentioned she should have grabbed the slap bracelet. A slap bracelet is a bracelet that consists of layered, flexible stainless steel sealed within a fabric that wraps around your wrist when the bracelet is hit against it.Paramount Picture(s) - When Jess is trying to be a Shot Girl, she invents a character named Ivy who will sleep with someone for a chance to be in a Paramount Picture. Paramount Pictures is an American film and television production and distribution company founded in 1912.We also cover when Schmidt gave his fire monologue while twirling his fire batons as the “Schmidtism” of the episode. We changed our next segment to “In the 2020s” to highlight the “not” moments, like the way Schmidt described Cece’s new boyfriend, and the “yes” moments, like Robby not feeling threatened/his lack of toxic masculinity and the guys wanting to comfort Jess. We also give a brief look into Parker Posey and Nelson Franklin, the Guest Stars we featured in this episode. Also in this episode was Ross Mackenzie who we do not discuss in the podcast but played the proctor in the flashback scenes. We also discussed how Parker Posey replaced Leslie Mann for the role of the shot girl and how we were excited to see the Chore Chart still on the fridge! While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:Bushel - When speaking about Nick and his “gift” of making mixed drinks, Winston asks why he’s trying to hide his light under a bushel. A bushel is actually a unit of volume in the US based on dry capacity and is equal to 8 dry gallons. It was primarily used for farming products like wheat. It’s also colloquially used to measure a “bushel of apples”.Dengue Fever - In the episode, Jess says that one way she could earn up to $700 at a hospital is by being infected with Dengue Fever for research. Dengue fever is a tropical disease that is carried by mosquitoes with the dengue virus. It has been a big problem since World War II and is still common in over 120 countries mainly in South America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. It is currently classified as a neglected tropical disease. When Nick is giving Jess a tough love speech he mentions the following references: Passing cigarettes to prisoners - Historically, in prison, cigarettes were noted as an informal currency that allowed you to supplement the income that your family might place into a commissary account. In 2016, the preferred informal currency began to shift to Ramen after many prisons had budget cuts leading to prisoners having to find nutrition on their own.Turn-of-the-century bathing costume - In the 1900s women typically did not swim and rather jumped through the waves while holding onto a rope attached to a buoy and were dressed in black, knee-length wool dresses with puffed sleeves. They often also included a sailor collar, ribbons and bows, black stockings, and fancy caps.T-Ball - Casey tells Schmidt that her nickname is t-ball because you can never strike out with her. T-ball is a team sport that combines cricket, baseball, and softball for children between ages 4-7 to develop skills and have fun. The rules are most similar to those of baseball, however for the youngest players it is played without a score with each player being allowed to bat. This episode got a 9/10 Rating from Kritika whose favorite character was Nick and Kelly rated this episode an 8/10 and her favorite character was Winston! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 2!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/
In this episode, Paul interviews Nick Bradley of the Scale Up Your Business Company and Podcast. Nick comes from a venture capitalist background, he has been buying and scaling businesses for a long time and has a huge amount of experience and knowledge. Listen in to hear all about Nick’s personal story and to gain invaluable business knowledge. KEY TAKEAWAYS Nick has been buying and scaling businesses for a living for the past 15 years. He has worked with over 100 different acquisitions in both the US and the UK and been involved in 24 business exits. He also runs the Podcast ‘Scale Up Your Business’ and has enjoyed the connections and success this has brought to him. Both Nick and Paul are on clubhouse and think it’s an incredible platform, especially for business and networking. When Nick was in the private equity world he found the extremely high financial rewards and the power brought out the worst in him. He found himself not being a very nice person due to the need for significance and needing to feel like being the alpha. He started to experience this a little bit when he first went on clubhouse so he had to dial it back a bit. He now goes on a lot of small rooms so that it is just about connecting and meeting people rather than followers. Nick has seven different companies, all of these sit under his personal brand but they have different dimensions. He has multiple business that are their own entities so they could then be sold independently down the line. A mistake new start-up businesses often make is they don’t recognise early enough the need for good leadership, team management and other essential parts to scaling up. They don’t realise when the business is at the point of growth that they need to focus on these things, they still see themselves as small. Pushing yourself physically has an effect on your mental strength, that is why it is not surprising that lots of successful CEOs are also endurance athletes. They are training their bodies to train their minds. Just buying a business and not knowing what to do with it means you will struggle to be successful. You would need to partner with someone who has business experience or gain your own experience. You can buy businesses using other peoples money, by using other financial tools and leverage the deals so that the amount you put in is tiny in comparison to what you are buying, but there is no such thing as a ‘no money deal’. If you are thinking of buying businesses internationally then you need to have contacts and someone to help you with the deal that is in the country the business is operating in. It's also advisable to establish what position they are in, would they be happy being CEO or do they want a hands off approach? Nick advises to never buy a business abroad where you don’t have someone in place who will be there to takeover when the business is bought. Nick called his podcast something literal that delivered a promise. He believes this is one of the reasons it has had organic success as well as telling his story in his early episodes and by being super clear by the message he was trying to deliver. Nick didn’t find instant success with his podcast but started to get into the charts around 5 months in. He also found that after some time there were people who started binging his podcast, almost like it was a Netflix series! BEST MOMENTS “It was a gift from the gods that fell on my lap” “It’s very easy to be caught up in other peoples politics” “The magic is not the acquisition, it’s the integration” “Those who start businesses are not necessarily the ones that are good at scaling them, it takes a different mindset” “Everything is easy if you’re prepared to gain the knowledge and do the work” “Be really real” VALUABLE RESOURCES BulletProof Business Podcast ABOUT THE HOST Paul Abercrombie Entrepreneur, Speaker, and Founder of Multiple Businesses. Nick is still pursuing his relationship with Caroline even though the loftmates are advising against it. Schmidt’s still dealing with his broken penis and meets Cece’s grandmother while Winston gets drunk with his boss and ends up with a new accessory for everyone to make fun of.We discuss Pop Culture References such as:The River by Joni Mitchell - While Jess was wallowing over her breakup with Russell, she played The River by Joni Mitchell on repeat in her room.Tom Waits - Nick refers to the voice in his head sounding like Tom Waits and later in the episode Jess imitates what Tom Waits would sound like. Cylons are a fictional, artificially-intelligent race of machines in the Battlestar Galactica series. Grateful Dead Bears - When Nick was looking at the apartment with Caroline, she asked him where the Grateful Dead Bears were going to dance. The Grateful Dead is a band formed in 1965 in Palo Alto, California. The “bears” were initially designed by artist Bob Thomas to appear on the back cover of the band’s 1973 album, The History of the Grateful Dead, Volume 1 (Bear’s Choice). They have come to be a symbol for many things but are most notably used as a symbol for the band. Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky - When Jess finds out that Paul cheated on his girlfriend when he slept with her, he claims to know what Bill Clinton felt like and Jess says she knows how Monica Lewinsky felt. Since 1943, there have been 9 actors who have played Batman on the big and small screens. Yoda - When Schmidt is talking to Cece’s dadi and friends, he mentions they are like real live yodas. Yoda is a small, wrinkly, green character from the movie franchise Star Wars. Winston’s Earrings - Throughout the episode, the loftmates made fun of Winston by comparing him to many famous references including the below:Disney Pirate Movie / Captain Black Sparrow - This is a reference to the movie The Pirates of the Caribbean where the main character is an eccentric pirate named Captain Jack Sparrow. For “Not in 2020” on this episode we discuss how Cece’s dressing down to avoid discomfort for Schmidt was compared to dressing like a “women’s study major”. We also discuss how Paul called Winston “Washington” and Jess referred to Jenn as “Asian me” and herself as the “Caucasian you”. We also explore the careers of Phil Hendrie, Melissa Tang, and Madhur Jaffrey, the guest stars of this episode. This episode got an 8/10 Rating from Kritika and Kelly and we both had the same favorite character: Jess! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 24!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/

In this episode of The Hyperfast Agent Podcast, host Dan Lesniak speaks with copyright gurus, Nick Tozier and William Adkison. Nick and William are the copywriters on Dan's team and know just how important copyright is when it comes to communicating your message to your clients. With differing backgrounds, both Nick and William bring different writing perspectives, but they both agree that copywriting is essential to real estate marketing! Episode Highlights: William began his writing career when he was teaching at a university, eventually progressing into academic copywriting. Nick has been writing copy for over 15 years, touching blogs, articles, product descriptions, and real estate. William outlines the differences between academic writing and sales copy, mainly the engagement aspect. As a Masters student, William taught entry-level history to undergrad students before leaving academia. People skim and scan online, only occasionally stopping to read content from front to back. The hook acts as a tool to draw people into the story, whether it be in an article or an Instagram post. There needs to be a clear call-to-action (CTA) or an offer at the end. William aims to bring in organic traffic to the team blog through longer-form content, giving a lot more story to work with. Nick works to change little things on emails, ie. colors, fonts, headlines, to see what works the best. Make sure to track your email numbers, how many clicks, opens, etc., to see what works well and what doesn't. Start with some kind of blog, on LinkedIn or your website, and answer the questions that you receive as an agent. Focus all your attention on the hook and the offer by reusing the content that you are already making. The fear of having their words rejected stops real estate agents from doing this consistently and making it their own. It's important to trust that the message you are trying to send is the right one; some people will love it and some people will reject it. Those that disapprove of what you have to say are going to be much more vocal than the ones that agree with you. All engagement, whether it's positive or negative, is useful because it makes it more likely that your content will appear in searches. There is a sense of triumph that lies in flipping a negative reviewer into a positive one. Consistency in creating content is key to getting results and building confidence. Repurpose your longer-form pieces into smaller articles to address your clients' pain points and efficiently use your time. Create a swipe file so that you can take other's creative ideas and adapt them to your business. Both Nick and William were able to use their past experiences to create success in the real estate copywriting industry. Each candidate in the election is going to have their unique effect on the real estate industry. William spends his spare time writing for his personal blog and creatively, just for fun. When Nick isn't writing, he enjoys playing guitar because it has such a large personal payoff. 3 Key Points: At the end of the day, your marketing needs to engage the readers enough to get them through the story and to your offer. It's important to dedicate some time each day toward creating decisive content, making sure to consistently provide value to buyers. It's important for real estate agents to remain unique and not fear rejection when putting their content online. i don't even know how Nick came across my awareness, but the minute I heard about what he was doing, something ignited in me. you see, i had been planning to take a trip around the world to sit with people who did not feel heard and listen to them. i wanted to hear what people would say if someone cared enough to listen to them. i wanted to sit on street corners, government offices, homeless shelters, placesI of worship, bookstores, cafes and truck stops. I wanted to visit strangers in hospitals and talk with CEO's and entrepreneurs, sit with families and children in schools, i wanted to sit with the homeless and with people who had beautiful homes and ask them some questions and just listen to their answers. but i was scared. my body had gotten older and it was carrying a lot of pain and i was no longer that 18 year old kid who hitchiked around the world's was now a 65 year old man who was a whole lot less spontaneous than i wanted to admit i was and was looking for companies to sponsor my trip. i was looking for a car company to sponsor my vehicle and a hotel company to let me stay overnight in rooms that were not booked, or a train company that would be willing to let me ride across the country and speak with people on the trains. all great ideas, but what i realized is they were covering up my fear of getting out there and doing it. so i made a decision, i would leave march 1,2020 no matter what. in judaism they have a great saying, "Man plans and God laughs”. weeks beforemy departure date, Coved -19 entered our collective lives and no one was going anywhere. so when i heard about nick and hs mission to have 500 lunches with 500 strangers, i had to have him on the show and i had to do what he was doing. and thus i started 50 conversations with 50 strangers (o listen to those conversations, please go to my YouTube channel: to subscribe to my YouTube channel, please go here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVQAe3mbYOT0AFY6Zr-xskg?view_as=subscriber) you will love this podcast, there is a gentleness and a kindness that permeate everything nick does, to hear that, you will have to listen to this show. to find out more about nick and 500 lunches, read below: About Nick Bendel Nick Bendel is an ex-journalist who now owns a content marketing agency called Hunter & Scribe. 1. Yesterday, markets declined which is typical after a Monday rally. Often, we will see a lot of backing and filling throughout the rest of the week. Bottom line, the trend is still up. When you look at different industry groups, tech has been the leader and doesn’t do much backing and filling. The easy money has been made. 2. Homebuilder stocks are strong today. The charts in this sector are holding up well. I have not bought this industry group yet, but they are acting well right now and I'm keeping them on my radar. Trader can track this group by looking at the ITB (ETF). Lennar and Pulte have identical chart patterns. No foreclosure crisis for right now. KB Home not participating. It’s not dire but it’s not going places.3. Hotels, getting ready to reenter. Marriott, Hilton and Choice are looking good. Casinos are getting ready for a set up. Closed out LV Sands and made 22% in a matter of days. Airlines are having a rough time after their recent huge move. When Nick gets into a stock people hate it. Buy when things are on sale. 4. Nasdaq has been the leader, trading at record highs. None of the other indexes are at their highs. The trend is still your friend until the end. 5. Precious Metals are on fire. GLD, SLV, GDX miners are on fire. Nick’s been watching silver for the pattern and it’s starting to break out. Big resistance on SLV is $17.70. Money printing around the world. Central Banks buy gold too. There really is no other safe haven.
When it comes to building relationships email is not always the best form of communication. Sure, you can initiate the dialogue that way and build up a little trust. But there comes a time where a phone call is more meaningful and purposeful. When we first reached out to Nick Clark in regards to a sponsorship of our One Room Challenge, like with all inquiries, we weren’t sure what to expect. You never know who is on the other end, what they are like, what they will think of you, and so on. When Nick responded and suggested a phone call Michael immediately dialed and the conversation lead to a meetup at the Novo Building Products HQ in Zeeland, MI. We’ve since built a great relationship and partnership that is sure to span many projects over the foreseeable future. Nick Clark is the Marketing Manager overseeing Novo Building Products and it’s family of companies. The words Anam Cara are Celtic for "friend of my soul" and represent rare friendships that transcend time and distance. Originally from Lodi, California (Nick) and Scotland (Sheila) the couple met in London while Sheila was in Public Relations and Nick was the European Marketing Manager for a US-based corporation. When Nick returned stateside in 1981, they were married in Cambridge, Massachusetts.Together, they opened a small chain of family-serving pizza parlors first in Benicia, California, and then in the Napa Valley. It was when they moved to St. Helena that their immersion in the world of wine began. In 2001, the family came to Oregon, purchasing a rundown walnut, plum and filbert orchard which was to become the home of Nicholas Vineyard and Anam Cara Cellars wines. Nick and Sheila continue to farm the vineyard, assisted by their two dogs, Buck and Missy who welcome visitors and help keep the vineyard gopher free.
When Nick started this “episode”, it was just him practicing talking to himself. We want to share this cool look back at the beginning with everyone who has supported us from the beginning! When Nick was conceived, he had a 30% chance of surviving birth. Nick was 1 of 12 people in the world at the time who was born with Hanhart Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder which either leaves the babies with undeveloped limbs or undeveloped organs. Fortunately, when Nick was born the only things that were affected were his limbs. They did a test on his organs and they came out a 100% healthy. Nick was self-loathing and thought about ending his life. Fortunately, he was able to find his "WHY" through wrestling in high school. He had to Amputate part of his arm to be able to wrestle. Nick was not the best wrestler, but he would pack tournaments with spectators. People would approach him with tears of joy and excitement and say how much he inspired them. That was a turning point for Nick and his life. Nick realized he could achieve anything he set his sights on. Nick has continued to aim higher and higher, knowing that every day he lives is considered a medical miracle. He has made cameos on TV shows like “The Walking Dead” and has become a social media sensation gaining more than 1 million followers on “Vine” in less than a year. Remember when Nick recommended the super-niche podcast Containers? You know, the one about containers of the shipping variety? Well Liz decided it was time for a niche podcast war and here we are with The Podcast For Laundry. Zane has a rather theatrical listener submission with The Irrationally Exuberant, and Nick goes to Hollywood with Scriptnotes. Then it's time to let you all know what we thought of last week's recommendations.Liz Recommends - The Podcast For Laundry with Brett Davishttps://foreverdogpodcasts.com/podcasts/the-podcast-for-laundry/When Nick decided to bring the super-niche podcast Containers (about, you guessed it, fucking shipping containers), Liz knew she had to out-niche him as payback. And here we are with The Podcast For Laundry.“When we brought comedian and laundry enthusiast Brett Davis to “talk suds with his buds” on our network, we could never have expected the seemingly affable host and innocuous topic (laundry) to result in this. Regrettably, we are contractually obligated to present The Podcast For Laundry, and apologize to the many guests dragged into Brett’s endless downward spiral. Listener discretion is advised.”In every episode, Mr. Davis, or an obnoxious, inept version of himself, talks to a friend in a laundromat about washing clothes. Segments include “What’s Your Terge?” where guests discuss their preferred detergent, and “Bleach, Please,” where they talk about something that bothers them about laundry. Each episode is filled with banter gone horribly wrong. For both: any Tom Scharpling ep, or the hilarious ep with Allie Goertz where Brett pitches his laundry-themed musical.https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-laundry-podcast-with-radley-carolla/id1254592653Nick Recommends - ScriptnotesScreenwriters John August and Craig Mazin discuss screenwriting and related topics in the film and television industry, everything from getting stuff written to the vagaries of copyright and work-for-hire law.For either: Take ya pick!https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/scriptnotes-podcast/id462495496Zane Recommends - The Irrationally Exuberanthttps://theirrationallyexuberant.com/Back with another listener submission, Zane has brought in The Irrationally Exuberant. When you find your center in life, you’ve found your purpose. The Digital Hospitality crew traveled to Renegade Fitcamp in San Diego to record a podcast from the amazing facility with part-owners Nick Hardwick and Jayme Hardwick. https://renegadefit.com/ The Hardwicks' ability to transform themselves over the years is inspiring. It’s not easy when you change directions, but it’s often necessary. Our Digital Hospitality thesis is: no matter what business you’re in, you need to start building a strong digital presence. https://calibbq.media/podcast-episodes When we first started Digital Hospitality in 2019, the married couple and business entrepreneurs were some of the first names we wrote down as potential dream guests. Before becoming a media personality and content publisher, Nick Hardwick played 11 seasons for the Chargers in the National Football League. He retired in 2015 after a serious neck injury in week one of the season, and overall health concerns, forced the decision. Since then the Hardwick family has had to transform themselves and their routines, just like we all have to when big life changes occur. “For me it was a big part of shedding that former identity, which is really what happens when you’re transitioning out of something so massive as that,” Nick Hardwick said about leaving the NFL. It’s like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly, but you have no clue what to do with your wings. It takes serious effort to learn how to fly high. These days, the Hardwicks are soaring higher than ever. The couple are business owners, content creators, and media publishers who choose to tell their own stories online and take control of the narrative. Nick Hardwick's weight loss journey: Nick Hardwick has always been able to transform his body. The NFL center played football at around 300 pounds, which took an insane amount of daily calories to keep on — as much as 7,000 calories a day. His mass helped him in his football career. It’s also not a sustainable lifestyle afterward as his career changed. Every night in bed, Nick Hardwick would wolf down a pint of Ben and Jerry’s which he grabbed from a freezer he kept stocked full of ice cream. “Chubby Hubby is really good, Chunky Monkey is super good, Cherry Garcia was kind of back-shelf. Karamel Sutra, there’s so many. It’s so good,” Nick Hardwick said on Digital Hospitality as he reminisced about his ice cream glory days. “He knew at that point he wanted to lose weight and regain some of his health,” Jayme Hardwick said. “He was just ready to shed some of that weight and kind-of reinvent himself.” Nick realized during that period that he had to transform his physique as he transitioned out of being a professional athlete. “He made a commitment to himself that he was going to lose as much weight as possible," Jayme said. "When Nick commits to something he’s all-in. ”Within four months, Nick Hardwick lost 85 pounds. As he describes on Digital Hospitality, his weight loss routine wouldn't work for everyone, but it helped him shed weight fast. He’s since found a happy medium between body size and health. Nick has also worked hard on his mental health, which is something many former pro football players struggle with . “I think he was floundering,” Jayme said. “He’d always been longing for the six-pack, so he had that, yet he had no direction.” Through self-reflection, hard work, and focusing on what really matters in life, the Hardwicks found their key pillars in life. And at the center of it all is family. As they grew together, both Nick and Jayme learned how to compliment each other in new ways. https://youtu.be/RuTv4NIPxFM Finding Center podcast: The Finding Center podcast was created with the goal of helping others discover their foundations, just like Nick Hardwick has his “Four Pillars”: Family, Fitness, Food, Football. https://www.instagram.com/findingcenterpodcast/ The podcast grew organically from the burgeoning so...

These practical steps have helped me to realize my goal and to appreciate the joys and challenges of making a career from your art. Why is it so important to be able to separate yourself from your art? What does it mean to create your life by creating every small moment and how can we allow ourselves the space to make magic happen? Listen in to learn about Nick Onken’s background, his path to creating art as a career, and his outlook on how to design your life. You can Subscribe and Listen to the Podcast on Apple Podcasts. When Nick looked into it, he discovered that the team did not take into account all the work necessary to adhere to the Definition of Done. Once he found that, however, he had to work with the team to help them realize what was going on, and how they could become more predictable by simply taking into account what they had committed to: the Definition of Done criteria. Nick, with 111 days sober, shares his story. On today’s episode Paul discusses anxiety, depression and stress. “These pains you feel are messengers. Listen to them.” ~ Rumi. Depression is when mental energies are stuck in the past, anxiety is when we are living in the future, and stress accumulates when the end goal is more important than the task at hand. Liberation from all three of these dysfunctions resides in the present moment. There is an undeniable connection between alcohol and depression. Remove alcohol and the bulk of melancholy should be lifted within a matter of months. Anxiety levels should also return to baseline after removing alcohol from your life. When we are primarily focused on the end outcome, and not the task at hand, we experience stress. Stress can be devastating to the equanimity in the body. The most powerful remedy to depression, anxiety, and stress is to ground yourself in the moment. SHOW NOTES [10:40] Paul introduces Nick Nick is 32 years old and lives in Vancouver, Canada. He works in the career center at a university. He has been married for 2 years. For fun, he is still trying to figure that out in sobriety, but he enjoys having conversation and making connections with people. [13:20] Give us a little background about your drinking. Nick didn’t really start drinking until his early 20’s. He says he liked to drink, that there never really was a time that he did not enjoy it. He felt he could drink more than most and still be OK. And what that ended up doing was it basically normalized drinking large amounts of alcohol, because he wasn’t getting sick or waking up with a hangover. Things slowly escalated from there. In 2010 Nick moved to Vancouver. There were a few times when he decided that he didn’t like how much he was drinking, and he would just stop for a few months at a time. [17:00] What was the catalyst for you to decide to go a month or two without alcohol? He went through a really messed up experience between his best friend and the person he was dating at the time. He dealt with that experience by drinking. What he came to realize was that alcohol just made him feel worse. So, he distanced himself from those 2 people and from alcohol. He went 3-4 months without drinking, not thinking he would never drink again, but more because he felt he needed a break from it. When Nick started to drink again, the next year or two, it wasn’t that bad. But what came back very quickly was the familiar feeling that alcohol made him feel comfortable, safe, more confident. The thing that tipped Nick off to drinking becoming a problem was in order to feel normal or comfortable in a situation, he needed alcohol. [20:15] When did you realize that your drinking was a problem? It’s hard for him to pinpoint exactly when that happened. It built very slowly over time. It snowballed and it wasn’t until many years later that he realized that he had lost control. [22:05] When was the moment that you did stop and see that alcohol was the factor that was causing that unease in your life? Nick says there were lots of smaller moments, but when he really knew it, it was about 6 months after a good friend died from leukemia. He started isolating and drinking alone. [25:50] Did you have a rock bottom moment? How did you finally make the push forward into sobriety? Nick tried to moderate, which didn’t work. He then started to go to counseling on a regular basis. He was honest with his therapist about his drinking. He started journaling which helped him to see why he was drinking. He became more self-aware and was communicating better. He was still sad and grieving. Over the next year his drinking escalated. Around September 2018 he was listening to a lot of podcasts and just knew that he had to give up drinking. He came home one day, after listening to the RE podcast, took his earbuds out, and just cried. Part of the reason he cried was because he realized that he was not alone. [34:05] When the tears came flowing, what did it feel like to fully lean in? Nick says it felt terrifying and he felt very vulnerable, but also so relieved. That began a long series of day ones. On December 1st he joined the Café’RE Facebook group. After drinking a lot after a staff party on December 7, he has not picked up since. [41:30] What was the first week like, the first month? How did you do it? The first few days were a little rough. Because of all the journaling he had done he knew the hours that he needed to keep himself busy. He changed the route he would take as he would walk home so that he would not be passing liquor stores. He got connected and reached out to others in the group. [44:16] With 111 days what’s he biggest challenge you’ve encountered so far? The feeling of plateauing. He’s sober and isn’t experiencing cravings, so the question of “what now”? [45:50] What was the Recovery Elevator Nashville event like? It was great. As soon as he heard about the Nashville event, he knew he had to try to get himself there. [48:30] What are you going to do next in recovery? Nick would like to work with people in addiction and recovery. [51:20] Rapid Fire Round Worst memory from drinking? Waking up and realizing that you hurt someone you care about, but you can’t remember why, is the absolute worst feeling in the world. Do you remember a specific ‘oh-shit’ moment? The last night he drank. It was though the scotch he was drinking was water. It just wasn’t working anymore. Best advice you’ve ever received? And what advice can you give to someone who is thinking about getting sober? Be open and vulnerable, be willing to give and receive love. You might be an alcoholic if... You go to slide a wine bottle under your couch, and you hear it hit another bottle, which hits another bottle. Show Notes I first heard today’s guest, Nick Santonastasso, speak at the recent THRIVE event I attended and I am so grateful I did. Not only is his story remarkable, but just the way he delivered his inspirational message on stage sent goosebumps straight up my arms. Born with Hanhart Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that left him without legs, an underdeveloped right arm and a left arm with only one finger, Nick’s parents were told early on all the things he would likely never be able to do. His parents threw that list away and Nick has been shattering those glass ceilings ever since. As a fitness model, inspirational speaker and now author of the book, Victim to Victor, Nick is instilling his can-do-anything attitude and energy with the world. This was such an awesome conversation and I can’t wait for you to hear the wisdom that comes out of this 22-year-old’s mouth. Check out how you can get a free copy of Nick’s book in Resources! Question Highlights: What is one of your superpowers? What is one of your favorite books? What is one thing you’re challenged by right now? Who is someone who’s changed your life? What can you tell us about Hanhart Syndrome? Do you remember the age you realized that you were born differently? What was it like growing up “different?” When was the first time that you shifted from having down-and-out feelings to being the inspiration you are today? What role did your parents play in who you are today? What is your one biggest piece of advice for parents today? What would “doing enough” look like? What do you believe the purpose of earning a significant amount of money and being successful is? What is the message of your book, Victim to Victor, and what makes it so special? Quotes "What are you willing to do to pivot?” “You need to focus 110% effort on whatever you’re doing or you’re going to sell yourself short.” “If you believe in yourself to do great things, why would you sell yourself short?” “It’s not selfish to level up.” Nick Santonastasso is a medical miracle. Not only is he one of four people alive with the rare genetic condition, Hanhart Syndrome, the inspirational keynote speaker is an internationally known bodybuilder and fitness model – despite missing both his legs and one arm since birth. The high-energy youth shares his amazing story, showing people that anyone can thrive if they have the determination and willpower to go after what they want. When Nick was born, the doctors handed his parents a long list of things that he would never be able to do. Nick’s parents politely thanked them and threw the list out. They raised Nick the same way they had raised his three able-bodied older siblings and instilled in him never to let the world tell him what he could or couldn’t do.
