Our guest this week is the Founder & CEO of Tentsil, Alex Shirley-Smith. Tentsile is a blend of both a hammock and a tent. You are suspended in the air between trees like a hammock, but you have the space and room of a tent that can hold multiple people. We have a nice chat with Alex, and hear about his passion for nature and the outdoors, along with how the idea for Tentsile was born. We also talk about all of the great gear that they make and how modular it is. Also, Tentsile is one of our donating partners of HangCon, and Alex has sent in one of the Trillium 3 person hammocks for the raffle, plus he has sent me one of the Stingrays to set up at the event for you to see and try out. There will also be a QR code that you can scan to get 30% off everything in your cart. Let's get on with the episode so that you can hear more from Alex. On the last Saturday of June 2018, I found myself hanging out inside of a Tentsile tree tent in the heart of the redwood forest in Northern California. You’ve probably seen these tents - or have at least heard of them. I like to think of them as a grown up camping tree house. They’re super cool. Anyways, I was fortunate enough to be hanging out with Alex, the founder of the company. Like I usually do, I took out my phone, and recorded our conversation. I found it fascinating to hear about how he came up with the idea, what camping looks like in other countries, and what’s next for his brand. I hope you enjoy our conversation. I've long believed that if you made something so cool it can't be ignored, then you've got a real business opportunity. Not a business yet, just an opportunity. But put in the work to build a real product, manage production and dial in the marketing, and that business opportunity can explode into a wildly successful brand. That's exactly what Tentsile founder Alex Shirley-Smith did with his amazing floating tree tents. Listen in as he tells where the idea came from, how he overcame crazy manufacturing problems (including getting banned from his own factory), and has grown sales volume more than 10x every year!
