The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is actively trying to hire 250 seasonal park ranger and ranger assistants in anticipation of another busy summer this year. The recruitment drive started in February, two months earlier than last year, and has already yielded more than 4,200 applications for seasonal park ranger assistants - a nearly 100% increase compared to the number of applications the agency received for this position during this same time last year.  The OPRD won approval from state lawmakers last year to lengthen the duration of its seasonal positions up to nine months to better handle increasing numbers of visitors beyond peak summer months. There were an estimated 52 million day visits made last year, making it the second busiest year on record for the parks system. Joining us to talk about how these recruitment efforts are going and what staffing looks like at their parks are Jason Elkins, Park Manager at Cape Lookout Management Unit which includes Cape Lookout State Park on the Oregon coast, and Grace Neil, who recently started her second year as a seasonal park ranger at Wallowa Lake State Park in Eastern Oregon.

New rules for drones in Oregon state parks could come this summer

Think Out Loud

There are currently no rules for taking off or landing a drone at a state park in Oregon. Individual state parks can, however, restrict operating a drone in certain areas or times of the year to protect public safety or wildlife, such as nesting bald eagles and western snowy plovers. But now that's changing. The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is in the process of drafting new rules for operating drones within state parks and along the coast which could be finalized as early as June. To learn more about the proposed rules and what's at stake are Chris Havel, associate director of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, and Kenji Sugahara, a drone pilot, lawyer and the president and CEO of the Drone Service Providers Alliance, a national organization that advocates on behalf of commercial drone pilots. The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is accepting public comment on their proposed rules for the takeoff and landing of drones until April 7. You can submit a comment here.

State parks will become much more accessible under a new plan from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. Doors, parking lots and restrooms account for about half of the existing barriers for people with disabilities. Those should take about five years to fix, but the full plan is expected to take about 25 years. Advocates for people with disabilities say they're heartened that parks will be brought into compliance with the federal Americans With Disabilities Act, passed more than 30 years ago. Our guests are Helena Kesch, the ADA coordinator for Oregon Parks & Rec, and Ashley Schahfer, owner and consultant of Empowering Access, who is a park user with disabilities.

ESOL News Oregon, by Timothy Krause Text of article: (MAY 21, 2019) Summer in Oregon is special. The rain decreases, and the temperature increases. People like to go outside and do things. In fact, they like to do a lot of things, and some of them are a little unusual. Here are some interesting things to do in June: If you like sports, you might want to attend an old-fashioned ballgame. Hillsboro and Portland each have a baseball team. They are the Hillsboro Hops and the Portland Pickles Do you enjoy drama? Then you might want to visit Ashland, which is home to one of the largest theaters in the country called the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. It has several different live theaters offering classical and modern work. For the family, there is nothing more traditional than Portland's annual Rose Festival. There's a parade, a carnival, and many other events. And it's 111 years old! . If the weather gets hot, there's no better place than the Oregon coast. While you're there, check out the sand castle contest in Cannon Beach. Portland Pride is an annual celebration of our LGBTQ community. LGBTQ means Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer. The big party is in June with a colorful parade and other attractions. Maybe you want a bird's-eye view of all that surrounds you. You can see beautiful hot air balloons at Tigard's Balloon Festival June 21-23. Also high up in the sky is the summer kite festival in Lincoln City. Bring your own kite to fly or watch others. Did you know that some artists use a chainsaw? It sounds dangerous, but the results are impressive. You can see for yourself at the chainsaw carving contest in Reedsport. And, of course, there's the famous World Naked Bike Ride in Portland June 29. The goal is to raise the visibility of bicycles and public awareness of our dependency on oil. Perhaps best of all: free camping and parking in Oregon State Parks on June 1. Read by Eric Dodson. CC BY-NC-SA. From ESOL News Oregon by Timothy Krause. Experiences You Should Have

Visit Yachats, Oregon During Whale Season: Podcast Show Notes Welcome to Experiences You Should Have, your how-to guide for amazing experiences. I’m your host Gail and today we are exploring the Gem of the Oregon Coast, Yachats during whale season. Yachats is one of my favorite towns on the Oregon coast and is nestled between Newport and Florence, Oregon. It currently has a population of 757 people and if you drive too quickly, on highway 101, you might miss it, but you would be doing yourself a disservice if you missed this amazingly quirky town. There’s nothing like checking out top Oregon coast attractions like Thor’s Well and Devil’s Churn in Yachats and also getting a peek of Spouting Horn during high tide. There are pathways leading down to the ocean from the highway, and you really can’t go wrong if you pick one and continue walking through the fairyland forest. The Oregon coast is not like your typical beach. It’s lined with majestic cliffs, rocks, and forest that looks like it came straight out of a storybook. There’s something about staring out at the rough Oregon ocean and contemplating life. After you’ve contemplated your past, present, and future, and gotten lost in the Oregon waves, if you’re there during whale season, you can scan a few waves in front of you for migrating grey whales. I was in Yachats during whale watching week (which was the last week in March) and asked Liz who was part of the Whale watching Spoken Here volunteer program through Oregon State Parks. Whale Watching on the Oregon Coast I kept on waiting and waiting to see a whale. You may see one, you may not, but if you do, it’s really exciting. Now you can see whales up and down the Oregon coast if you go at the right time. If you’re on the Oregon coast Mid December - Mid January or March - April you can see the Grey Whales Migration. Why Visit Yachats, Oregon? So you can see whales off of the Oregon coast, but why go to Yachats? There’s something magical about this little coastal town. It’s not the typical town that tourists flock to, but even though the population is around 700 people, you can truly experience the funkiness of the Oregon Coast. First off there is a grouping of galleries in Yachats selling amazing photos, pottery, jewelry, and amazing art. My favorite coastal bar and restaurant is right there in Yachats, called the Drift Inn. When you walk in, there are multiple murals of mermaids. Umbrellas and multi-colored glass lighting hang from the ceiling. And Every night from 6-8:30 there is live music. Just a few weeks ago, Randy McCoy and his family got up from their dinner and started harmonizing on stage. I stood there with my jaw open, as their music was amazingly perfect. Check out Randy McCoy's Music, Here.    Pretty cool for a small coastal town. There’s something about Yachats that brings the ocean to life as well as the Oregon coast culture. The people there are artists and you can feel warm energy when you’re there. The only chain store that I saw was a Dollar General. Everything else is local. Luna Sea is bringing in crab and fish they caught that day. They have a local brewery serving up fermented foods and even Vegan fare. The Green Salmon Coffee Shop sells every coffee combination possible and offers a multitude of alternative milk, CBD coffee, and even boasts about the importance of mushrooms.   There’s art wherever you turn, and even a beautiful mural on the side of a local building. But if you were to road trip on Highway 101, and not stop in Yachats, you would be missing out on a magical experience. If you’re lucky, you might see a heart-shaped spout from a Grey whale passing by. It’s the simple things that matter, and sometimes you need to stare off into the ocean to give you clarity.   I always feel like I go back in time when staying on the coast, because we always end up playing cards, watch movies on VHS, walk into places and have real conversations and then there’s something ab...

Such is the basis for this dual account by Louise Ruddle Talbot and David Talbot, mother and son, on extended stays at the family's primitive cabin in the Rogue River wilderness. Half of the story is from the diary of Louise, a San Francisco urbanite convinced by her husband to move their family (including six-week-old David), from California's comforts to Oregon's rugged back country in 1933, to ride out the Great Depression. The balance of remembrances are David's, from the family's second cabin stay in 1944, when he was eleven. About the Authors: Louise Ruddle Talbot was a San Francisco girl with a twinkle in her eye, a passion for arts and culture, and a writer's heart. David Talbot is retired director of Oregon State Parks, serving from 1964 until 1992. At the time of his retirement, he was the longest serving state parks director in the United States.
