People are always disappointing. Here's why.
Stereotype Threat happens when you are in a social group pinned with negative labels. The risk involves doing something that confirms such a biased notion. These stereotypes vary according to one's gender, ethnicity, cultural group, race, and nationality, leading to achievement gaps. This is due to the fact that the stereotypes put on additional pressure and fear to a person as they become anxious about the possibility of proving these negative labels right. This holds them back from maximizing their full potential as the worry itself distracts them and consumes so much energy. The energy that could be otherwise put into one's work. Women and people of colour are mainly affected by these stereotypes as well as people who are not confident about themselves. Not only do these labels affect the way people work, it even decreases their motivation to do things. But just as with any problem, there are possible solutions. There was an experiment conducted that involved women who were presented with three different conditions as they were solving certain problems. The first group was asked to do the activity separately as they face the threat. The second group was asked to work together as they were presented with a threat. Lastly, the third group didn't face any threat at all. Turns out, the performance of a threatened group increases when they are working with other people who are facing similar risks. This means that as long as those stereotyped groups work together, they can become better and break all the limits that these stereotypes have created. Mental accounting refers to the way different people tend to perceive the value of money. This is usually based on an individual's subjective criteria, which greatly vary from one person to another due to many factors. For instance, you might value a dollar differently when it is earned through work compared to when it is given to you. These differences in the way we classify funds tend to make us spend more or make irrational decisions about the money. A good example of this is when a person saves up for a vacation and uses his “savings jar” while having a considerable credit card debt at the same time. He would probably categorize his savings money differently from the money he uses to pay his debt and so be left with piling interest while having some money sitting in his jar. In the end, he could've just used the money to pay off his debt than pay a lot more interest just to have the vacation fund separated, right? The solution may seem straightforward but people still don't follow it. Another example is when a person makes an irrational investment decision after receiving his bonus. In his mind, this money is just additional cash so he can waste it without feeling guilty about it. As a result mental accounting often leads to poor financial decisions that will only make your financial situation worse. So be sure that you treat all your money equally and if you have extra money then you should use it wisely. Project post-mortem is a term used for a project recap at the end of every project. The goal is not to investigate and look for someone to blame, but to try and improve in the future. Every project, whether it is a success or failure, surely has something to improve upon. It is always packed with many lessons that can be learned. The project post-mortem aims to fully uncover how the project went, see the possible loopholes, and understand the complete course of the activity. This ensures that those mistakes will not happen again as it can then be prevented the next time. It also pushes the successes and wins to still be improved upon. Here are some pointers on how a productive project post-mortem works: 1. Make the project post mortem a standard for every project, whether it was a success or not. 2. Send out the post-mortem questionnaires to all the people involved before the review meeting. 3. Set a clear agenda and assign a moderator. 4. Ask the right questions to make sure your path is clear and concise. 5. Make sure you conclude the findings and work your way from it. Plan about what you can do better on the next projects. You don't even have to wait for the grand project to end before scheduling this important evaluation. Dividing it into key milestones and adding mini post-mortems in between can make a massive difference in your team's overall progress. Everyone could get valuable insights and fresher perspectives that can help people to understand the project better and even improve along the way as you identify potential concerns.
