Dividing Roles in Marriage: Finances, Parenting, & Family Responsibilities ft. Jessica Hagner

The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 29, 2025 61:07

In this candid episode of the Dad Edge Podcast, I'm joined once again by my wife, Jessica, for a raw and relatable conversation about marriage, parenting, and family dynamics. Together, we dive into the often-unspoken expectations that can trip couples up—from finances and chores to parenting roles and communication.   We unpack stories from our own journey, including how we've learned to navigate paying bills vs. investing, handling family dinners without resentment, and even the role each of us plays in talking with our boys about tough subjects like sex and relationships. Jessica also shares her gift for approaching conversations with grace and timing, while I reflect on my more reactive nature. This episode is packed with practical takeaways for couples who want to strengthen teamwork, avoid resentment, and lead their families with intention.     TIMELINE SUMMARY [0:00] - Welcome to the Dad Edge movement and today's focus on roles in marriage [1:01] - Defining who does what in parenting, finances, and chores [2:06] - The hidden danger of unspoken expectations [3:30] - Behind the scenes: energy, stress, and real-life struggles [5:10] - Midwest float trip stories and creating family traditions [9:27] - Why shared memories matter more than perfection [11:16] - Breaking down marriage roles: paying bills vs. investing [15:23] - The early financial mistakes that created stress in our marriage [18:05] - Why swapping roles can sometimes create resentment [21:16] - How Jessica manages bills and accountability with confidence [24:19] - Investments, risks, and learning to stomach financial swings [27:15] - Family dinners: why they often cause conflict and how we shifted the burden [29:03] - The turning point when Jessica admitted she hated cooking [31:36] - Why meal planning is harder than it looks (and how we simplified it) [34:47] - Balancing preferences, health, and kids' picky eating habits [39:11] - Parenting roles: who has the sex talk with the kids [41:12] - Creating safe, open conversations about sex, porn, and relationships [44:12] - How to approach hard conversations with timing and grace [47:26] - Why gentleness and patience often lead to better results [50:18] - Picking the right time and tone to address conflict at home [53:03] - Dividing responsibilities with kids' sports and activities [56:08] - Communication as the glue that keeps roles balanced [57:12] - Closing reflections and an invitation for listener topic suggestions     5 KEY TAKEAWAYS   1. Unspoken Expectations Create Resentment Most marital conflict stems not from tasks themselves, but from unspoken roles and assumptions. Clarity prevents conflict. 2. Play to Your Strengths Dividing responsibilities based on natural strengths—like Jessica handling bills and me handling investments—makes life easier and reduces stress. 3. Dinners Are About Connection, Not Perfection Family meals can quickly turn into a source of resentment. Sharing the load and letting go of perfection creates a healthier environment. 4. Hard Conversations Require Timing Approaching difficult topics at the right time and with the right tone changes everything. Grace and patience often achieve more than urgency. 5. Parenting Is a Team Effort From sex talks to sports practices, showing up as a united front teaches kids stability, respect, and the value of shared responsibility.       LINKS & RESOURCES   21 DAYS TO EXTRAORDINARY MARRIAGE - https://thedadedge.com/extraordinary-marriage/ Share your topic suggestions: info@thedadedge.com 25 Questions to Spark Connection With Your Partner: https://www.thedadedge.com/25questions Dad Edge Podcast Website: https://www.thedadedge.com/podcast Join The Alliance: https://www.thedadedge.com/alliance Dad Edge Tools & Resources: https://www.thedadedge.com/tools       If this episode gave you practical tools for marriage or parenting, please rate, follow, review, and share the podcast. If you've ever wondered how to walk in that authority and discern the divine separation happening around the globe, this word will wake you up and send you into your assignment with fire.

This week on the Tough Girl Podcast, we're joined by Lily Canter—an ultra runner, women's running coach, journalist, and passionate advocate for gender equality in sport. As co-author of the groundbreaking book Ultra Women, Lily is helping to challenge outdated narratives and spotlight the women redefining endurance running. Lily didn't grow up considering herself sporty, but after joining a triathlon club in her 30s, she discovered a love for running that quickly evolved into a passion for ultras. What began as a spontaneous 30-mile run turned into a deeper journey into the ultra world—culminating in a 250km multi-day race across Tanzania and a growing commitment to empowering more women through education, coaching, and research. In this episode, Lily opens up about the gaps she saw in female-specific training information, how she and co-author Emma Wilkinson tackled the research for their book, and why visibility, representation, and equity matter—on the trails and in the media. From coaching to kit, sports bras to science, Lily shares what still needs to change and how she's pushing those boundaries herself. Whether you're curious about tackling your first ultra or passionate about equity in endurance sports, this episode offers practical insight and powerful inspiration.  New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast drop every Tuesday at 7 AM (UK time)! Make sure to subscribe so you never miss the inspiring journeys and incredible stories of tough women pushing boundaries.  Do you want to support the Tough Girl Mission to increase the amount of female role models in the media in the world of adventure and physical challenges? Support via Patreon! "In summary, I am scared that I might have half-cheated on my girlfriend. Maybe not on paper, but in the grey zones. And then, that I didn't respect her limits with my oversharing, because either I was too much trying to be transparent or just processing, easing my insecurity or guilt. I would very much appreciate your insights in how to disentangle that mess." In this episode I talk about relationships shouldn't just be about drawing hard lines. If we draw hard lines we run the risk of 'lining ourselves in' a corner, or a little box. Dividing our selves from our selves and relationships. Making us firmly held, and very unfree. How can our relationships become-other, to make a relationship a becoming? We need soft lines and lines of flight. When we have this, we will see our relationships as flourishing to an extent where we don't yet know what a relationship is capable of. Mark 15:16-41The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!” Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get. It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. The written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS . They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, come down from the cross and save yourself!” In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can't save himself! Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him. At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” ). When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he's calling Elijah.” Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said. With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!” Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome. In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.

In this lesson, we explore the dramatic moment in John chapter 2 when Jesus clears the Temple courts. What provoked such zeal from the Prince of Peace? One possible answer lies in something called the Soreg—a dividing wall in the Second Temple that separated Gentiles from the inner courts of worship. The penalty for crossing it? Death. In Jesus' day, this physical barrier symbolized deeper religious and cultural divisions, born from centuries of foreign intrusion—Antiochus Epiphanes desecrating the sanctuary, Pompey entering the Holy of Holies, Pilate defiling the gates with Roman symbols. In response, the people erected barriers—both physical and spiritual. And in many ways, we do the same today. As secular culture presses in, some churches lock down, creating their own modern-day Soregs to protect what they believe is sacred. But in doing so, are we possibly excluding the very people God wants to welcome in? Join us as we examine: - The historical and religious meaning of the Soreg - How Jesus' actions challenge a fortress mentality - Paul's message in Ephesians 2 about tearing down the dividing wall of hostility This lesson will challenge us to reflect on our own attitudes and how we use Scripture: Do we build walls that divide—or doors that invite? --------------------------------------------------- www.figtreeteaching.com Join the Fig Tree Coffee Club: https://www.figtreeteaching.com/store/p3/Fig_Tree_Coffee_Club.html Support Fig Tree Ministries: https://donorbox.org/support-figtree-ministries Fig Tree Amazon Portal: https://amzn.to/3USMelI Lesson Handout: https://www.figtreeteaching.com/blog/the-dividing-wall-of-hostility Soreg Handout: https://www.figtreeteaching.com/blog/the-dividing-wall-of-hostility Article - "Destroy This Temple" - The Messianic Promise of Rebuilding https://www.figtreeteaching.com/uploads/1/1/9/7/119763168/fig_tree_ministries_article_background_to_john_2_18_19.pdf YouTube: https://youtu.be/BifAsBGBO8E

Brandy Shufutinsky is the newly appointed Director of the Education and National Security Program at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. In this important conversation, we disciuss how today's ethnic studies curriculum, originally intended to promote understanding among diverse communities, is instead fueling division, promoting an oppressor-vs-oppressed worldview, and teaching students that capitalism is synonymous with white supremacy and exploitation. Brandy brings deep expertise to this topic, holding a doctorate in International and Multicultural Education from the University of San Francisco, an MSW from USC, and an M.A. in International Relations from the University of San Diego. Today, at least 22 states mandate ethnic studies in K–12 education, 24 more have incorporated elements of it, and California has made it a graduation requirement. Yet there are no national standards for what's being taught, and no real education on the dangers of communism, the importance of civics, or an emphasis on nurturing diverse opinions and critical thinking. Brandy shares how you can get involved locally to push for rigorous standards, honest history, and an end to the ideological indoctrination in our classrooms. If we want to preserve a strong and free Republic, the way we educate the next generation must change. Quotable Moments: "The ideology holds that I'm suffering from internalized oppression because I'm not willingly categorizing myself as part of the oppressed class." "If you are, or simply appear to be white, you're automatically put in the oppressor category." "We cannot have the Republic we have today with an ill-informed, miseducated next generation." "It's easy to be a communist when you're living in a capitalist society." "We need to teach civics and the benefits of our system, but we also have to teach the dangers of the other."   Check out our website: https://meantforyoupod.com Reach out to us: meantforyoupod@gmail.com Follow us on IG

The world says dividing Israel brings peace.
God says it brings judgment. From the Vatican backing a Palestinian state, to Saudi Arabia drawing a red line, and UK leaders preparing a “when, not if” peace plan—the pressure to divide the Promised Land is reaching a fever pitch. But the Bible couldn't be more clear.
Joel 3. Zechariah 12. Daniel 9.
This isn't just politics. It's prophecy in motion. In today's episode of The Endtime Show, we break down how these headlines could point us to the covenant with many—and what it means for Israel, the Church, and the final 7 years. 📱: It's never been easier to understand. What if the way your organization measures success is quietly setting you up to fail? What if you've been measuring the wrong things to meet a strategic outcome. This episode unpacks how avoiding failure—not just chasing wins—might be the smarter strategic move, and a smart farmework for how to do it. We're not just challenging metrics—we're rethinking meaning. In this conversation with Mark L. Vincent, we explore what organizations don't measure, why qualitative signals matter more than they seem, and how chasing only what's easy to quantify can quietly corrode strategic progress. You'll hear how seasoned leaders fall into traps by overlooking process in favor of performance, and how shifting your lens to include failure-prevention and systems-level insight can transform how you lead. This isn't another conversation about KPIs—it's a deep dive into the hidden architecture of impact. If you've ever been part of a strategy that looked good on paper but broke down in practice, this episode will name what you felt but couldn't quite explain.***ABOUT OUR GUEST:A Process Consulting pioneer and Systems Convener with more than 30 years of service as an Executive Advisor and Corporate Board Member, Mark's Executive Advising practice walks alongside a global Client base, including artful convening and facilitation of organizational systems facing complex scenarios. When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and to God.29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said. 30 And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. 31 For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. 32 The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. 33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord's people.34 Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.36 Or did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? 37 If anyone thinks they are a prophet or otherwise gifted by the Spirit, let them acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord's command. 38 But if anyone ignores this, they will themselves be ignored.39 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.

In this episode, we kick off a 5-part series where we break down: What the Prosperity Gospel gets right—and dangerously wrong How the Poverty Gospel subtly creeps in as "humility" The parable that changed everything for us  The biblical third way no one talks about enough How prayer can shift false teachers more than criticism ever could Why stewardship (not ownership) is the core financial principle of Scripture How even Mother Teresa modeled biblical abundance through simplicity If you've ever struggled to reconcile your faith with your finances… this episode is for you.   Resources Mentioned:
