We walk through the hidden legal traps that many employees miss—confidentiality agreements, acceptable use policies, non-disparagement clauses—and how employers flip those mistakes into a ready-made defense.We pull back the curtain on the “retaliation playbook”: IT flags unusual downloads, HR opens a policy investigation, and termination arrives with a “legitimate, non-retaliatory reason.” Then comes after-acquired evidence to limit damages, motions to exclude improperly obtained documents, and the credibility battle that distracts from your core allegations. We also break down the whistleblower myth. Some statutes can protect targeted document retention, but coverage is narrow, fact-specific, jurisdiction-dependent, and easy to lose. Relying on Title VII's anti-retaliation language to excuse broad data grabs is a costly mistake.The AI trap gets special attention. Uploading company files to a chatbot creates discoverable records, waives privilege, and can breach your NDA. It also invites arguments that you were case-shopping, not reporting unlawful conduct. Instead of risking counterclaims and evidence exclusions, follow the safer path: consult an employment lawyer early, use contemporaneous personal notes, make formal complaints that trigger preservation, consider agency filings like the EEOC to lock in holds, and deploy preservation letters to prevent deletion. Christopher is an occupational therapist who provides services to students with physical disabilities at the Henry Viscardi School in Albertson, NY. He has worked as an OT for over 20 years in a variety of settings, but his passion is assistive technology and enabling his students to be successful in and out of the classroom. Chris is an avid tinkerer and enjoys designing and fabricating adaptive devices. He shares his knowledge with others by lecturing occupational therapy students as an adjunct faculty member at Stony Brook University and Touro University. Christopher also presents and hosts workshops at national conferences and guest lectures at other schools and organizations. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in occupational therapy focusing on the impact of adapted sports on quality of life. We will learn about their experiences at the AOTA Hill Day event in Washington D.C., where occupational therapy practitioners meet with legislators to advocate for the profession. Both leaders shared their motivations for participating, with Samia highlighting her roles as an OTAC president and professor at USC, while Arameh emphasized her experience as AOTA president and the importance of collective advocacy in areas like mental health, school-based services, telehealth, and Medicare. We are so fortunate to witness our state and national associations in collaboration for OT Representation on Capitol Hill. Rafeedie, OTD, OTR/L, BCPR, CBIS, FAOTADr. Samia Rafeedie is the Director of the Professional Program in Occupational Therapy at the University of Southern California (USC), and professor of clinical occupational therapy. She has been on the faculty since 2008 and has primarily taught adult physical rehabilitation, kinesiology, and topics on professional development and association engagement. Samia has been an occupational therapist for 24 years, with additional practice interests in productive aging and geriatrics, pedagogy and higher education, mentorship, and volunteerism. She is the President of the Occupational Therapy Association of California, and is invested in strengthening the association by recruiting and maintaining members. Some of her favorite occupations include spending time with my family, taking trips together and going out to eat for Japanese food (our favorite!). She also LOVES volunteering for our state association. It fills her cup!Arameh Anvarizadeh, OTD, OTR/L, FAOTADr. Arameh Anvarizadeh is a Professor of Clinical Occupational Therapy and former Director of Admissions at the USC Mrs. T.H. Chan Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy. As the architect of USC Chan's holistic admissions process, She led transformative efforts that resulted in the most diverse cohorts in the Division's history—all while preserving rigorous and effective admissions standards. Her leadership has also been pivotal in strengthening recruitment and retention strategies, creating pathway programs, and promoting inclusive pedagogy. A Founding Member and former Chair of the Coalition of Occupational Therapy Advocates for Diversity (COTAD), Dr. Anvarizadeh has been a driving force in advancing justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism, and anti-oppression within the occupational therapy profession. She is the visionary behind many of COTAD's cornerstone initiatives, including COTAD Chapters, the COTAD Toolkit, the Ignite Series, and the Fieldwork Task Force. Dr. Anvarizadeh made history as the youngest and the first Black and Iranian woman to serve as Vice President of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and to be inducted into the prestigious Roster of Fellows (FAOTA). She made history again with her landslide election as AOTA President, a role she officially assumed in July 2025. In addition to her current role as AOTA President, Dr. Anvarizadeh has held numerous national leadership positions, including Chair of the Credential Review and Accountability Committee (CRAC), member of the Representative Assembly Leadership Committee (RALC), member of the Governance Task Force, and liaison between the Governance and DEI Task Forces. She also served on the AOTA Special Task Force on Entry-Level Education and was a key contributor to the national dialogue on entry-level degree requirements. Dr. Anvarizadeh is a proud alumna of the 2020 Executive Leadership Program for Multicultural Women. In her home state of California, she has been recognized with the Janice Matsutsuyu Outstanding Service Award and the Vision Award from the Occupational Therapy Association of California (OTAC). She previously served as OTAC's Communications Chair for seven years and contributed to various committees, including Advocacy and Government Affairs and Conference Planning. An accomplished author and dynamic speaker, Dr. Anvarizadeh has presented at numerous state, national, and international conferences, delivering keynotes, lectures, and commencement addresses. She has authored multiple peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and is a contributing editor to the recently published book Occupational Identity. Most recently, Dr. Anvarizadeh is embracing her most meaningful role yet: motherhood. She is intentional about honoring this life shift, leaning into her community, and nurturing balance. In this episode, we will learn from Samia H. Rafeedie, OTD, OTR/L, BCPR, CBIS, FAOTA. Samia is the Director of the Professional Program in Occupational Therapy at the University of Southern California (USC), and professor of clinical occupational therapy. She has been on the faculty since 2008 and has primarily taught adult physical rehabilitation, kinesiology, and topics on professional development and association engagement. Samia has been an occupational therapist for 24 years, with additional practice interests in productive aging and geriatrics, pedagogy and higher education, mentorship, and volunteerism. She is the President of the Occupational Therapy Association of California (OTAC), and is invested in strengthening the association by recruiting and maintaining members. Some of her favorite occupations include spending time with my family, taking trips together, and going out to eat for Japanese food (our favorite!). She also LOVES volunteering for our state association. Corrin, a COTA for 25 years, has practiced Occupational Therapy in areas from home health, subacute rehab, long term care, outpatient, Geri-psych and more. In every setting, she zeroes in on maximizing each client's level of function. After nearly a decade in the clinical settings, she took on higher education, supporting many students as an instructor, Fieldwork Coordinator, and Program Director. Though she continues to support former students, her true passion is working with persons experiencing changes in cognition. Her desire to stay current with treatment and policy trends has driven her to attend state and local conferences and she is immediate past president of the Connecticut OT Association. In this episode of PING, APNIC's Chief Scientist, Geoff Huston, discusses the root zone of the DNS, and some emerging concerns in how much it costs to service query load at the root. In the absence of cacheing, all queries in the DNS (except ones the DNS system you ask is locally authoritative for anyway) have to be sent through the root of the DNS, to find the right nameserver to ask for the specific information. Thanks to cacheing, this system doesn't drown in the load of every worldwide query, all the time, going through the root. But, even taking cacheing into account there is an astronomical amount of query seen at the root, and it has two interesting qualities Firstly, its growing significantly faster than the normal rate of growth of the Internet. We're basically at small incremental growth overall in new users, but query load at the root increases significantly faster, even after some more unexpected loads have been reduced. Secondly, almost all of the queries demand the answer "No, that doesn't exist" and the fact most traffic to the root hunts the answer NO means that the nature of distributed DNS cacheing of negative answers isn't addressing the fundamental burden here. Geoff thinks we may be ignoring some recent developments in proving the contents of a zone, the ZONEMD record which is a DNSSEC signed check on the entire zone contents, and emerging systems to download the root zone, and localise all the queries sent onwards into a copy of the root held in the resolver. Basically, "can we do better" -And Geoff thinks, we very probably can.

In this episode, we will learn from Michelle LeRoy, PhD, OTR/L, BCP & Colton Sayers, OTD, OTR/L, CNS: OT in LGBTQIA+2S Health & Fellowship. Dr. Colton Sayers is a practicing clinical occupational therapist at UC Health and an adjunct instructor at the University of Cincinnati. He works primarily in an outpatient neurological clinic. His doctoral work has consisted of creating learning initiatives that help healthcare workers better understand the lived experience of members of the LGBTQ+ community while accessing healthcare. In his own experience accessing healthcare as a gay man, he has suffered many uncomfortable situations with medical professionals which has led to feelings of shame and guilt. Some of his work has included being on his healthcare institutions diversity, equity, and inclusion council, teaching graduate courses on global and community health, creating the first LGBTQ+ continuing education course for the American Occupational Therapy Association, and pioneering the first Occupational Therapy LGBTQIA+ Fellowship in the world. Through his work, he is hopeful it will decrease barriers to accessing healthcare, improve healthcare workers understanding of the LGBTQ+ community, and help individuals live long and meaningful lives. Dr. Michelle LeRoy is an assistant professor in the occupational therapy department at Colorado State University. Their research area focuses on how occupational therapy can support the mental health of LGBTQ+ youth in schools. As an occupational therapist they are board certified in pediatrics and has worked as an occupational therapist serving the transgender community in a primary care clinic focused on serving the LGBTQ+ community. They have provided multiple presentations for free to the transgender community regarding how to bind, tuck and pack safely to maintain body integrity and also currently volunteers with multiple organizations to provide support to the LGBTQ+ community in Fort Collins, Colorado. Their passion stems from being the proud mother of a transgender child and seeing the difficulty their child has had in receiving proper healthcare.
