Justin and Kylie dive into startling new data showing the positive effects of mobile phone bans in Australian schools. They explore statistics that reveal significant improvements in student learning, behaviour, and classroom engagement and reflect on the broader implications for parenting and screen time at home. KEY POINTS: The mobile phone ban in schools has led to 87% of students being less distracted 81% reporting improved learning 63% drop in critical incidents involving social media 54% reduction in behavioural issues Government intervention in screen and phone use is proving effective. Removing screens from classrooms and delaying smartphone access at home are strongly recommended. Analogue tools outperform digital ones in fostering better learning outcomes. Data from vaping bans also support the case for limiting access to harmful digital content. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE:“Kids don't need smartphones. They need smart parents, and smart parents give their kids dumb phones.” – Dr. Justin Coulson KEY INSIGHTS FOR PARENTS: Delaying your child's access to smartphones helps them focus, learn, and behave better. School phone bans are effective, but more impact can be made at home and in broader digital habits. Parents shouldn't rely on children to self-regulate in an adult digital world—protection and guidance are necessary. Government restrictions, while imperfect, are valuable in safeguarding children. RESOURCES: Unplug Childhood [Join the village!] Kids Need Smart Parents, Not Smart Phones [Article] ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Delay giving children smartphones as long as possible—opt for dumb phones with basic functionality. Set boundaries around screen use at home, especially for social media and unsupervised access. Support analogue learning tools at home and advocate for them in schools. Stay informed about government policies that affect your child’s digital environment. Have open conversations with your child about the purpose and risks of digital devices. Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

**Today's Halacha is dedicated f or the refuah and haslacha of Ronnie, Sharon, Eli and all the children of CARE** A number of different applications are available providing the entire text of the Siddur of one's smartphone. Is it permissible to pray using such an application? The Gemara in Masechet Berachot (23) establishes that while praying the Amida, it is forbidden to hold in one's hand certain objects – such as Tefillin, a Sefer Torah, money, and a knife. We find among the commentators two explanations for this Halacha. Rashi explains that the items mentioned by the Gemara are items which one worries about falling, either because they are sacred items, because they might hurt him if they fall, or because they are expensive items which could break or get ruined if they fall. When holding such an item, one's mind is preoccupied, ensuring not to drop it, making it very difficult to concentrate, and for this reason, Rashi explains, Halacha forbids holding such items while praying. The Nimukeh Yosef (Rav Yosef Habiba, Spain, early 15th century) explains differently. In his view, the Gemara chose these examples only because these are common items, and in truth, Halacha forbids holding anything in one's hand while praying the Amida. The Shulhan Aruch (Orah Haim 96) clearly follows Rashi's view, citing the Gemara's ruling and then explaining, "…because a person's mind is on them, so that they do not fall," and this will disrupt one's concentration during prayer. The Mishna Berura (Rav Yisrael Meir Ha'kohen of Radin, 1839-1933) clarifies that according to the Shulhan Aruch, only items which one is worried about protecting, or to ensure that they would not fall on his feet, are included in this Halacha. This would include a baby, who one quite obviously must ensure not to drop, as the Mishna Berura cites from the Hida (Rav Haim David Azulai, 1724-1806). The Mishna Berura then notes that some disagree with the Shulhan Aruch, and forbid holding any item during the Amida, referring, of course, to the Nimukeh Yosef's stringent opinion. The Taz (Rav David Segal, 1586-1667) follows the stringent view of the Nimukeh Yosef. It should be noted that the Shulhan Aruch Ha'Rav (Rav Schneur Zalman of Liadi, 1745-1813) maintained that even according to the Shulhan Aruch's view, there is a Misva Min Ha'mubhar (higher standard of Misva observance) not to hold anything at all during the Amida. At first glance, holding a phone which is worth hundreds of dollars, and which could break if it is dropped, would certainly be forbidden according to both opinions. However, the Shulhan Aruch writes in that same chapter that it is permissible while reciting the Amida to hold a Siddur from which one prays, despite the fact that sacred books are generally forbidden to be held during the Amida. Since the Siddur is held for the purpose of Tefila, it does not fall under the prohibition. Holding the Siddur serves to enhance one's ability to pray, rather than compromise his ability to pray, and therefore, this is permissible. This would apply to a smartphone, as well. If one uses the Siddur application on the device, then the device becomes no different from a Siddur, which may be held while reciting the Amida. (Of course, this does not satisfy the "Misva Min Ha'mubhar" not to hold anything during the Amida, as understood by the Shulhan Aruch Ha'Rav, but one who does not know the prayer text from memory must in any event hold a Siddur and thus cannot abide by this standard.) However, this applies on the condition that one first turns off all notifications, and silences the phone. Needless to say, if the phone rings, or if a notification appears on the screen, even for just a moment, this causes a distraction during prayer. Therefore, one must ensure before praying with a smartphone that he disables all functions which could potentially distract him during the Tefila, so that the smartphone at that time serves only as a Siddur. Additionally, although it is permissible to pray from a mobile phone, this should not be done unless it is necessary. Firstly, Rav Gamliel Rabinowitz (contemporary) cites a passage from the Sefer Hasidim warning that one's prayers are not answered if he prays from a Siddur which was published by a wicked person. Quite obviously, we do not know the people who produced any given mobile device. Although this is not a Halachic consideration which would lead us to forbid the use of a mobile device for praying, it suffices to make it preferable to use a standard Siddur. More importantly, using a mobile phone during prayer compromises the aura of sanctity in the synagogue. There is a certain ambiance of holiness and reverence which must characterize a house of prayer, and this ambiance is diminished, at least to some degree, by the sight of a person looking at his phone. Therefore, while it is Halachically permissible to use such a device for prayer, this should be done only when one has no alternative, when he finds himself in a place without a Siddur and he does not know the prayer text from memory. In conclusion, it is worth nothing the famous Halachic dictum, "En Kategor Na'asa Sanigor" – "a prosecutor cannot become a defender." This principle has certain applications for the service on the High Holidays, forbidding the use of certain things which are associated with sins which our nation has committed. But it might also be relevant to the question of using a smartphone for prayer. If one uses his phone for improper activities, such as wasting time, or worse, then it is a "prosecutor" against him, Heaven forbid, which cannot then be used as his "defender" in helping him pray to G-d and ask for His compassion and assistance. Summary: It is Halachically permissible to pray from a Siddur application on one's mobile phone, as long as one disables calls, notifications and all features which could disrupt his prayer. However, it is far preferable to use a Siddur, and a phone should be used only when a Siddur is not available.

This generation was born approximately 1984 and afterThis generation is tough to manage and they are accused of being entitled and narcissistic, self-interested, unfocused, and lazy..But entitled is a big one.Because they confound ( confuse) leadership so much. The leadership asks this generation what they want. They reply they want to work in a place with purpose and love.We want to make an impact. We want free food and bean bags.Even if they get that they remain unhappy. They need:ParentingTechnologyImpatienceEnvironmentI will explain here in every new paragraph. They grew up with failed parenting strategies. They were told all the time, that they were special. That they can have anything that they want in life, just because they want it.They got medals for something that they never have done.If they get a job they find out that they are not special. That their parents can't get them the promotion…They have to work hard to get a promotion. And so their confidence is shattered and they have lower self-esteem than previous generations.Through no fault of their own. They were growing up in a Facebook-Instagram world.Believed Life is amazing, even so, I am depressed…Everybody sounds like they got it all figured out…The reality is that they believe in this fake Facebook reality. And so they didn't have it figured out… Engaged with our cell phones and social media releases a chemical called dopamine. You get a text, it feels good because the body produces dopamine. If you feel bad and alone you send 10 messages to people you know and they reply positively.Again your body produces dopamine so you feel good.Dopamine is the same chemical that gets produced in the body when we take drugs smoke or gamble. In other words, it is highly addictive. We have age limitations for smoking, gambling, and alcohol but not for cell phones and social media…And this generation has access to an addictive numb-ling Dopamine …Nearly every alcoholic discovered alcohol when they were teenagers. When we were young the only approval we needed was the approval of our parents…Later we need the approval of our peers. But today we have our cell phones and that substitutes the approval from our friends…In other words, they don't need friends anymore they have their cell phones…They can't develop deep meaningful relationships, and so they escape in drugs. They admit that many of their friends are superficial.Instead of speaking out about their problems with their friends they take drugs. And that happens when they face social/financial/career stress. They looking for temporary relief by using their cell phone. They have friends for enjoyment and they know that they can't count on their friendships…We know that people who spend a lot of time on Facebook have more depression than people who spend less time on Facebook. The problem is the imbalance of drinking alcohol, or using social media … too much harm always… You see it everywhere they can't live without a cell phone. They are addicted to a cell phone. This is called Digital addiction. I have scolded my girlfriend again and again if you want to talk with me then only without the cell phone… If they check their phone in the morning, right after they get up they are addicted. And a cell phone addiction destroys every relationship. The next problem is impatience ...Because of the instant gratification from their cell - phone they don't need to wait anymore. And so they can't wait …Every good thing needs time.A good relationshipJob fulfillment Design new stuff But they don't have the time for that… The results are suicides, drug overdoses…Kids leave schools because of depression. So they never find deep fulfillment in the things they do, because they don't have the time …They have to learn to overcome the short-term gratification … And to invest their time in something meaningful. To work hard and long to get results. You can't climb a high mountain in 5 minutes… You need to trek often 4 to 10 days to be at the top of the summit … And it is hard… Why do I do that?To reset my life, to get rid of inner conflicts, to find peaceAnd it works - so harder so better… You can reset your life when you go through total physical exhaustion… If you don't believe trek with me… The people thought that I was crazy that I carried over 16 kg when trekking at high altitudes… For instance Kailash… The Last point is the environment. Most jobs are frustrating when the leader of that firm is not motivating and brings you down…What do they do? They quit.Instead to be independent, motivate yourselves, to live after your life standards. My Video:  This Is Why the mobile phone generation Doesn't Succeed ... https://youtu.be/hq31UVE2SQcMy Audio: https://divinesuccess.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/Podcast4/This-Is-Why-the-mobile-phone-generation-Doesn't-Succeed.mp3

Welcome to Monday Night Live Join us for another insightful episode of Monday Night Live, where Derek Arden welcomes an inspiring leader in education, Mike Foley, CEO of the Wessex Academy Trust. With a career spanning from teaching in London to leading one of the UK's most successful Multi-Academy Trusts, Mike shares his journey, leadership insights, and the challenges of managing 12 schools, 7,000 students, and nearly 1,000 staff members. Mike Foley's Leadership Journey Mike's career in education started unexpectedly. Growing up in South London, he initially considered a legal career after earning a history degree. However, a postgrad opportunity in teaching changed everything. He quickly discovered his passion for education, leading him to rapid promotions and eventually to the role of headteacher in his late 30s. After a decade in that role, he embraced the challenge of leading The Thomas Hardy School, one of the largest schools in the UK, before taking on the CEO position at Wessex Academy Trust in 2021. The Challenges of Leading a Multi-Academy Trust Running a multi-academy trust is a monumental task. Mike explains how strategic leadership, teamwork, and a strong culture keep the organization running smoothly. Key leadership challenges include: Maintaining a unified culture across 12 schools while allowing for individual school identities. Managing a £50 million budget efficiently, ensuring schools receive the necessary resources. Recruiting and retaining teachers, particularly as the UK faces a shortage of qualified educators. Supporting students post-COVID, especially those dealing with mental health challenges and complex learning needs. Leadership at Scale – The Power of People A recurring theme in Mike's leadership philosophy is trusting and empowering people. He emphasizes that leading at scale means ensuring others are motivated, aligned with the vision, and able to execute effectively. The key question he always asks himself is: How do I get people to do the right things, willingly and passionately? Mike also discusses the importance of continuous performance management. Instead of outdated annual reviews, the trust has moved towards ongoing performance reflection and feedback loops, helping leaders and teachers stay sharp and motivated. Education and Innovation – The Role of AI With artificial intelligence (AI) becoming a hot topic in education, Mike shares how Wessex Academy Trust is using AI creatively rather than banning it outright. One example? Students critiquing AI-generated essays to enhance their learning experience. He believes that embracing new technology, rather than fearing it, is crucial for the future of education. Mobile Phones in Schools – A Balanced Approach One of the biggest debates in education today is mobile phone use in schools. Mike recalls how, as headteacher at Thomas Hardy, he introduced a compromise policy: students could bring phones to school, but they had to be turned off and put away during the day. Breaking the rule meant parents had to come in to collect the phone. The result? A school-wide culture of responsibility and respect. Being an Ofsted Inspector – Insights from the Inside As an Ofsted inspector, Mike provides valuable insights into the inspection process. He highlights that Ofsted's role isn't just to criticize but to confirm schools' own self-assessments and help them improve. He also discusses upcoming changes to the Ofsted framework, expected in September 2025, which could impact the way Multi-Academy Trusts are evaluated. Final Leadership Advice – Building Resilience When asked for his one piece of advice for aspiring leaders, Mike emphasizes resilience. His mantra? Find the good in the bad. Every challenge presents a learning opportunity, and those who can adapt and push forward will be the most successful in any field. Thank You for Watching!

Irish Children Are Getting Mobile Phones at Age 9 - Over 3 Years Earlier Than Parents Would Ideally Like

Research commissioned by eir shows that children in Ireland are accessing their first mobile phones at the average age of nine, more than three years earlier than parents' preferred age of between 12 and 13 years. The study, which surveyed 522 parents across the country, also found that 42% of parents provide their children with a phone earlier than they would like, largely due to safety concerns. Despite this, over a third of parents reported being unsure of how to access the built-in parental controls to help monitor and manage their children's online activity. In response to this, eir has launched its Smart Start programme, a free in-store initiative designed to help parents set up parental controls, manage smartphone features and access alternative solutions tailored to their family's needs. Following a successful four-week pilot in December, the programme is now rolling out across 10 eir stores in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, and Offaly include the eir store in The Bridge Shopping Centre, Tullamore Starting from Monday 20th January, parents and guardians can attend drop-in sessions which will take place from 10:30 am -11:30 am Monday - Saturday, at participating eir stores, where trained staff will be on hand to provide support and advice. To ensure the advice is both robust and practical, eir consulted with CyberSafeKids, who endorsed the programme and provided expert input to train eir staff on best practices for helping parents safeguard their children's smartphone use. The research highlighted a discrepancy between parents' confidence in managing their children's smartphone use and the reality of children's online behaviour. While 71% of parents believe their child can self-manage online activity and 80% think their child would share negative experiences, findings from CyberSafeKids Left To Their Own Devices report, suggest a more complex reality. According to their report 77% of 8-12-year-olds say their parents cannot see what they are doing online, and 55% did not tell a parent when they encountered harmful content. This difference in perspective highlights the value of the Smart Start programme, which offers practical tools, tailored guidance, and alternative solutions to help them navigate the complexities of their children's digital lives. Alex Cooney, CEO of CyberSafeKids, highlighted the importance of such initiatives: "We know parents are aware of the risks? that accompany smartphone use, but?often?lack the support they need to mitigate these effectively. We're?delighted to have contributed to the development of the Smart Start programme, ensuring parents receive practical guidance?at the point of purchase to help their children navigate the online world safely. Programmes such as this?, which empower parents?in the digital age?a?re hugely welcome." In addition to assisting parents with smartphone set-up, the programme offers smart alternatives, like child-friendly smartwatches and broadband modem control features, allowing families to stay connected while giving parents greater oversight. Susan Brady, Managing Director of eir Consumer and Small Business, commented on the initiative: "At eir, we understand the difficult balancing act parents face when it comes to giving their child a smartphone. As parents ourselves, we know how important it is to stay connected with our children, and our research reflects that same concern. But we also understand that the challenges of managing mobile devices can feel overwhelming, and parents need support in navigating these risks. That's why we've created Smart Start - to provide practical tools and personalised guidance that help families make the right choices for their unique needs." Brady added: "We know that while many helpful resources are available, parents are already managing so much in their day-to-day lives. Through Smart Start, we're committed to being there for parents every step of the way, offering practical support that makes the process easier and hel...

Swappie, Europe's leading platform for refurbished iPhones, reveals a staggering €140 billion worth of unused mobile phones languishing in European households, underscoring a significant opportunity for economic recovery and environmental sustainability. Recent data from the European Commission highlights that over 700 million mobile phones are currently unused across the EU. Assigning an estimated average value of €200 per device, this dormant stockpile represents an untapped value of €140 billion. Each holiday season, millions of new smartphones are purchased, leading to a significant increase in the number of idle devices in households. This annual surge exacerbates the existing issue of tech bloat, underscoring the urgent need to reintegrate these devices into the circular economy. "Encouraging the circulation of these unused devices is crucial," says Emma Lehikoinen, Chief Operating Officer at Swappie. "By bringing them back into the market, we not only unlock substantial economic value but also contribute to environmental conservation by reducing electronic waste." A KANTAR study undertaken by Swappie indicated that 62% of Irish consumers retain their previous smartphones. Beyond the economic implications, unused mobile phones contain valuable materials, including critical raw materials essential for new technologies. The European Commission reports that the collection rate for mobile phones is under 5%, with an estimated 700 million unused devices stored in households across the EU. Enhancing the return and recycling of these devices is vital for resource efficiency and environmental sustainability. Swappie is at the forefront of the refurbished smartphone market, offering consumers high-quality, affordable alternatives to new devices. The company's rigorous refurbishment process ensures that each iPhone meets stringent quality standards, providing a reliable and sustainable option for tech enthusiasts. As the number of idle phones continues to rise, especially after the holiday season, Swappie urges consumers to consider the environmental and economic benefits of trading in their unused devices. Reintegrating these smartphones into the market supports the circular economy and helps mitigate the growing issue of electronic waste. See more stories here.

In this episode, Niall examines the question: Should parents have the right to access their teenager's phone, or do 16-year-olds deserve privacy? The debate stems from recent UK political discussions suggesting that parents should, at minimum, gain access to their child's social media accounts if the child dies. But what about everyday use? Does a parent's responsibility to protect outweigh a teenager's right to independence and privacy? Some callers feel that parents absolutely have a right to check their 16-year-old's phone, especially if they suspect a threat to their child's well-being. They argue that with the internet's many dangers—cyberbullying, online predators, and explicit material—parents have a duty to intervene. For these callers, privacy takes a backseat when a teenager's safety could be at risk.Others believe that teenagers, especially at 16, deserve space to navigate their lives without constant surveillance. They warn that snooping undermines trust, pushing teens to hide more rather than fostering open communication. Instead, they suggest honest, ongoing dialogue about online safety rather than forced access to private conversations.Niall concludes by highlighting the tension between a parent's instinct to protect and a teenager's growing need for autonomy. As social media and technology continue to evolve, so does the question of how to balance safety with respect for a teen's privacy.
