This week, I'm catching up with an old friend and long-time triathlon devotee, Tim Ashelford. With over 35 years in the sport, Tim has quietly built a life around consistent training, minimal injuries, and a mindset that favours long-term health over short-term glory. Together we explore: The early days of UK triathlon clubs (and some very questionable kit choices!) Why Tim chose not to pursue Ironman long-term The underestimated value of sprint and standard-distance racing How to stay healthy, consistent, and enthusiastic after 60 The training and lifestyle tweaks that support performance as we age We also touch on smart nutrition, strength training, sleep, and that all-important lesson of not training through niggles. Tim's story is a powerful reminder that you don't have to chase volume or sacrifice joy to stay fit for life.   If you'd like to follow Tim there are several channels you can choose from. You might be most interested in his Strava account if you want to check out his training Strava LinkedIn  Tim Ashelford Facebook Tim Ashelford https://triathlon.org/athletes/profile/20508/tim-ashelford Tim's inspirational book As you know we ask all of our guests to recommend a book that has inspired them. This is Tim's choice: Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer.  The gripping account of his experience in the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, in which eight climbers were killed and several others were stranded by a storm. In light of the mass amount of misinformation about ADHD, particularly regarding medication, I thought it was time to do a re-release of this past episode.*Disclaimer, although I have “Dr.” in front of my name, I'm not an MD and do not have the credentials to prescribe medication. This episode is meant for general information only and is not intended to be medical advice. As a licensed speech pathologist, I bring the perspective of someone who has supported clients through behavioral change and building skills; which has included making referrals/recommendations for families to seek medical advice from people who can prescribe medication. Additionally, I've also been in a position to report back to licensed physicians when they want to know a status update after prescribing medication. In this episode, I discuss:✅The “appeal to nature” fallacy, what it is and why it's potentially harmful.✅Common “natural” treatments for conditions like ADHD (such as diet, sleep hygiene, supplementation)✅How to avoid distorted thinking when making decisions about medication and other treatment options. In this episode, I mentioned this episode about homeopathy from the Unbiased Science podcast here: https://www.unbiasedscipod.com/episodes/homeopathy-much-ado-about-nothing-literally-nothingI also mentioned the book “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer here: https://www.jonkrakauer.com/books/into-the-wild-trFinally, I also mentioned my free Executive Functioning Implementation Guide for School Teams. Church History Matters
087 Does Religion Make People More Violent?

Church History Matters

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 29, 2024 61:58

Did you know that one of the best selling books in Latter-day Saint history on Amazon.com was not written by a Latter-day Saint or a historian? It was a controversial book written by atheist Jon Krakauer in 2003 titled, Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith, which still tops the Amazon charts (in Kindle releases) in the category “Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” And an adaptation of the book was released as a mini-series in 2022. One of the major premises of the book is that religion is inherently violent. To illustrate this premise Krakauer combines stories from early Latter-day Saint history with the story of a tragic murder in 1984 committed by two former members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Now Krakauer's work has already been repeatedly criticized as a gross caricature of Latter-day Saint history and of religious people in general, but considering the widespread reach and influence of his fundamental premise and the LDS history he chose to support it, we felt like this is a topic that might warrant further investigation.   So today on Church History Matters, Casey and I begin our multi-episode exploration of this question: Does faith in general, and the faith of the Latter-day Saints in particular, lend itself to acts of aggression and violence? What does reflecting on our Church's history—and specifically the violent episodes of our history—teach us about this important question?  For show notes and transcript for this and other episodes go to https://doctrineandcovenantscentral.org/church-history-matters-podcast/

Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/644 Presented By:  Yellowstone Teton Territory, Skwala, Visit Helena, MT, FishHound Expeditions We've got Tom Bie, the editor of The Drake Magazine, back on the show. Tom's written about everything from the issues facing brown trout in the Grand Canyon to a wild story involving a dad and daughter busted by the FBI for selling synthetic weed. They even sued Tom for a quarter of a million dollars. Strap on the seatbelt, grab your beverage, and get comfortable. Let's get into this one with Tom Bie! Episode Chapters with Tom Bie on the Drake Magazine  02:26 - We get an update on Tom and The Drake Magazine since our last episode with him in October 2020. We also dive into the challenges facing journalism today. 07:52 - Tom praises Monte Burke for his storytelling skills and how he lets people share their stories. He also talks about Monte's latest work on Nick Lyons. 14:24 - Tom also highlights Jon Krakauer, known for his gripping books like Into the Wild. Krakauer's reporting on a Yosemite climber who committed serious crimes is a prime example of his courage and commitment to justice. 19:16 - We chat about the fish removal in the Grand Canyon. The issue revolves around removing brown trout to protect the native humpback chub. Tom highlights how this problem mirrors other areas, like Yellowstone. He explains that while protecting native species is important, it's tough when their removal affects popular sport fish that have been around for decades. There's also a bounty program where guides earn money for killing brown trout, which has led to the killing of over 6,000 fish. 35:49 - We discuss how changes in river flow and dam operations have impacted brown trout in the Grand Canyon. Starting around 2014, increased flow rates and historic high flows allowed more brown trout to migrate. 47:56 - We talk about ways to help with the fishing issues in the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone. Tom suggests people contact the National Park Service to express that killing sport fish might not be the best solution. Inside the Drake Magazine 54:33 - Tom shares that he always includes at least one in-depth reported piece per issue of the Drake Magazine. While essays are popular with readers, he often gets way more essays than actual reporting stories. Tom also explains that good reporting involves more than just writing; it needs interviews and research. He advises aspiring writers to use quotes from real conversations to improve their stories. 1:02:00 - Tom shares a crazy story about a father and daughter from Texas who got into big trouble for selling synthetic weed. Tom even got sued for talking about it on a podcast! The family also bought the Deneki lodges in Alaska, which was part of the money laundering charges. Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/644

Kristin J. Jacobson In her new book, The American Adrenaline Narrative (University of Georgia Press), Kristin Jacobson considers the nature of perilous outdoor adventure tales, their gendered biases, and how they simultaneously promote and hinder ecological sustainability. To explore these themes, Jacobson defines and compares adrenaline narratives by a range of American authors published after the first Earth Day in 1970, a time frame selected as a watershed moment for the contemporary American environmental movement. The forty-plus years since that day also mark the rise in the popularity and marketing of many things as "extreme," including sports, jobs, travel, beverages, gum, makeovers, laundry detergent, and even the environmental movement itself. Jacobson maps the American eco-imagination via adrenaline narratives, surveying a range of popular and lesser-known primary texts by American authors, including best-sellers such as Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air and Aron Ralston's Between a Rock and a Hard Place. She also covers lesser-known novels as well as stories found in all types of media ranging from magazines, feature-length and short films, television shows, amateur videos, social media posts, advertising, and blogs. Jacobson argues for recognizing adrenaline narratives as a distinctive genre because, unlike traditional nature, travel, and sports writing, adrenaline narratives sustain heightened risk or the element of the "extreme" within a natural setting. Additionally, these narratives provide important insight into the American environmental imagination's connection to masculinity and adventure––knowledge that helps us grasp the current climate crisis and see how narrative understanding provides a needed intervention. Kristin Jacobson is a professor of American literature, American Studies, and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Stockton University in New Jersey. She completed her Ph.D. at Penn State, her M.A. at the University of Colorado-Boulder, and her B.A. at Carthage College in Kenosha, WI. This episode we return to the works of Jon Krakauer to discuss Into Thin Air, the true story of a group of climbers ascending Everest when tragedy strikes. We're cheating a bit this episode, however, because Everest — despite being based on the same events — isn't technically an adaptation of Into Thin Air, but this unique situation gives us plenty to discuss, along with the rigors of high altitude climbing, the horror story vibes of the novel, and the ethical dilemma of sprinkling fiction into a "true story" of tragic events.

Sam and Adrian are joined by author Will Cockrell to discuss his new book titled "Everest Inc." Will, who has covered the Mt Everest climbing season as a journalist for nearly 2 decades, chronicles the development of an industry that, each spring, becomes a focal point of the outdoor media.Everest Inc.: The Renegades and Rogues Who Built an Industry at the Top of the WorldFeaturing original interviews with mountain guides and climbers—including Jimmy Chin and Conrad Anker—this vivid and authoritative adventure history chronicles one of the least likely industries on guided climbing on Mount Everest.Anyone who has read Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air or has seen a recent photo of climbers standing in line to get to the top of Everest may think they have the mountain pretty well figured out. It's an extreme landscape where bad weather and incredible altitude can occasionally kill, but more so an overcrowded, trashed-out recreation destination where rich clients pad their egos—and social media feeds—while exploiting local Sherpas. There's some truth to these clichés, but they're a sliver of the story. Unlike any book to date, Everest, Inc. gets to the heart of the mountain through the definitive story of its greatest the Himalayan guiding industry. It all began in the 1980s with a few boot-strapping entrepreneurs who paired raw courage and naked ambition with a new style of expedition planning. Many of them are still living and climbing today, and as a result of their astonishing success, ninety percent of the people now on Everest are clients or employees of guided expeditions.Studded with quotes from original interviews with more than a hundred western and Sherpa climbers, clients, writers, filmmakers, and even a Hollywood actor, Everest, Inc. foregrounds the voices of the people who have made the mountain what it is today. And while there is plenty of high-altitude drama in unpacking the last forty years of Everest tragedy and triumph, it ultimately transcends stereotypes and tells the uplifting counternarrative of the army of journeymen and women who have made people's dreams come true, and of the Nepalis who are pushing the industry into the future.

Smoke by Michael Brissenden. Crime……Detective Alex Markov returns to her hometown of Jasper, California after a stint with the LAPD where she's been accused of corruption – some good ole boys on the force there want her gone – but her colleagues back at the Jasper precinct don't want her either. After a wildfire sweeps through the town a body is found in a shed, and the other cops are certain it's just a casualty of the fire – but turns out the shed was locked from the outside. As Alex investigates she discovers a really dark underbelly to the town which seems to be for sale to the highest bidder, and the authorities are playing games within games, where she's the prize pawn.  Everest, Inc. by Will Cockrell. In the 1980s, some entrepreneurial climbers started offering guided tours up Mt Everest – which has ballooned into an enormous industry where today, more than 90 percent of people who go to climb the mountain are clients or employees of guided expeditions. It's morphed from being a heroic endeavour on the part of individuals, to becoming Big Business. There's been triumph and tragedy along the way – notably the expedition which included Jon Krakauer (author of Into Thin Air) and during which five people died, among them New Zealander Rob Hall. New Zealand guides have been very active on the mountain, though today several of the big companies operating there are owned and staffed by the Nepalese. The book is subtitled The Renegades and Rogues who Built an Industry at the top of the World – which is exactly what they did.  LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The only solution, put forth by Rufus's scheming mother, is for Rufus to attend his sister's wedding at a luxury eco-resort, a veritable who's-who of sultans, barons, and oligarchs, and seduce a woman with money.  Should he marry Solène de Courcy, a French hotel heiress with honey blond tresses and a royal bloodline? Should he pursue Martha Dung, the tattooed venture capital genius who passes out billions like lollipops? Or should he follow his heart, betray his family, squander his legacy, and finally confess his love to the literal girl next door, the humble daughter of a doctor, Eden Tong? When a volcanic eruption burns through the nuptials and a hot mic exposes a secret tryst, the Gresham family plans—and their reputation—go up in flames.  Can the once-great dukedom rise from the ashes? QUOTES FOR REFLECTION“When a society rejects the Christian account of who we are, it doesn't become less moralistic but far more so, because it retains an inchoate sense of justice but has no means of offering and receiving forgiveness. The great moral crisis of our time is not, as many of my fellow Christians believe, sexual licentiousness, but rather vindictiveness. Social media serve as crack for moralists: there's no high like the high you get from punishing malefactors. But like every addiction, this one suffers from the inexorable law of diminishing returns.”~Alan Jacobs, scholar and literary critic “To get the full value of joy, you must have someone to divide it with.”~Mark Twain (1835-1910), writer and humorist “Happiness quite unshared can scarcely be called happiness; it has no taste.”~Charlotte Brontë (1816-1855), English novelist and poet “Happiness is only real when shared.”~Jon Krakauer, writer and mountaineer “Envy blinds men and makes it impossible for them to think clearly.”~Malcolm X (1925-1965), Muslim minister and activist “As a moth gnaws a garment, so doth envy consume a [person].”~John Chrysostom (c. 347-407), church leader and preacher “Comparison is the thief of joy.”~Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919), 26th president of the United States “Since the love which binds the Trinity together is the same love which binds the church to the Son and the saints to each other, we can rightly conclude that the structure of relationship which constitutes the glory of God or God's internal fullness is the same structure which constitutes the reality of the church…. The re-presentation of the societal and relational structure of God's Trinitarian life in the community of the saints, is, in a manner of speaking, the visibility of the God in the world.”~Krister Sairsingh, university professor, in his Harvard doctoral dissertation, “Jonathan Edwards and the Idea of the Divine Glory: His Foundational Trinitarianism and its Ecclesial Import”SERMON PASSAGEGalatians 5:13-15, 22-23 (ESV)Galatians 5 13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another…. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Matthew 3 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Isaiah 42 1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold,  my chosen, in whom my soul delights;  have put my Spirit upon him;  he will bring forth justice to the nations. John 15 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. In 2024, Everest has become completely commercialized. Shock, right? Well, Will Cockrell's new book, Everest, Inc: The Renegades and Rogues Who Built an Industry at the Top of the World, tells us how it happened. If you love Everest, despise it or don't really care, this book has something for everyone. In this fascinating read, Will did extensive research and uses quotes from original interviews with more than a hundred Western and Sherpa climbers, clients, writers, filmmakers, and even a Hollywood actor; the voices of the people who have made the mountain what it is today. In this Podcast, Will tells me that he positioned Everest, Inc. as the opposite of Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air. His book gets to the heart of the mountain through the definitive story of its greatest invention: the Himalayan guiding industry. It all began in the 1980s with entrepreneurs like Rob Hall and Gary Ball, Todd Burleson and David Breashears, with Dick Bass establishing a new, innovative industry for climbing high-altitude mountains, including Mt. Everest. Many of the pioneers are still living and climbing today and have helped thousands reach their climbing dreams. I talk through the three areas of commercialization with Will: the industry's formation in the 1980s and '90s, the early 2000s, when Western companions dominated guiding climbing Nepal, and the late 2000s, until today, when Nepali-owned operators lead 80% of all commercial clients. Everest, Inc: The Renegades and Rogues Who Built an Industry at the Top of the World will be published by @simonandschuster imprint @gallerybooks on April 16, 2024. This is the harrowing and terrifying true story of the Battle of Nasiriyah, Iraq. It all started with a wrong turn by an Army captain. When the dust cleared, the US military had suffered twenty-nine casualties, and many more injuries, most by friendly fire. But Americans didn't hear the truth about the battle. Instead, they heard about the valiant rescue of PFC Jessica Lynch. This story is narrated by Phil M. Williams, and sourced from Jon Krakauer's book, Where Men Win Glory.

The 1996 Mount Everest disaster, also known as the "1996 Everest disaster," was a tragic event that occurred on Mount Everest in May 1996. It involved several climbing teams attempting to reach the summit of the world's highest peak, Mount Everest, and resulted in the deaths of eight climbers.Key points of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster include:Multiple Expeditions: The disaster involved several expeditions led by different guide companies and climbers from various nationalities. Among them were Adventure Consultants, led by Rob Hall, and Mountain Madness, led by Scott Fischer.Adverse Weather Conditions: The climbers faced unusually severe weather conditions, including a fast-approaching storm and strong winds, which made the ascent more challenging.Summit Attempts: On May 10, 1996, many climbers reached the summit of Everest but were caught in deteriorating weather on their way down. This led to delays and exhaustion.Communication Issues: Due to communication problems, some climbers were unaware of the worsening conditions and the impending storm. Radios and satellite phones had limited effectiveness at that altitude.Trapped Above the Death Zone: Several climbers, including Rob Hall and Doug Hansen (a client of Adventure Consultants), became stranded above the South Col in what is known as the "Death Zone" (above 26,000 feet or 8,000 meters) due to exhaustion and illness.Tragic Deaths: Eight climbers lost their lives during the disaster, including Rob Hall, Scott Fischer, Doug Hansen, Yasuko Namba, Tsewang Samanla, Dorje Morup, Tsewang Samanla, and Tsewang Samanla.Heroic Efforts: The disaster also highlighted acts of heroism and selflessness, as climbers like Beck Weathers and Jon Krakauer survived harrowing ordeals.Media Attention: The disaster received significant media coverage due to the high-profile nature of some of the climbers involved, as well as the dramatic rescues and tragic deaths.(commercial at 8:38)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5080327/advertisement

This month, we discuss adventure stories, one of the prompts on the Books and Bites Bingo Reading Challenge. Choose your own adventure, whether it's with a group of teens on a road trip, on top of Mount Everest, or on a pirate ship! Jacqueline's PickJacqueline enjoyed Five Survive by New York Times bestselling author Holly Jackson. Red Kenny is on a road trip for spring break with five friends. When their RV breaks down in the middle of nowhere with no cell service, they soon realize this is no accident. They have been trapped by someone out there in the dark, someone who clearly wants one of them dead. With eight hours until dawn, the six friends must escape, or figure out which of them is the target.Pairing: No-Bake Peanut Butter Protein Cookies, a yummy road-trip treat.Michael's PickMichael took a trip to Mount Everest with Jon Krakauer's nonfiction book, Into Thin Air. Working for Outside magazine, Krakauer was given the opportunity to ascend Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world, during the 1996 climbing season on Rob Hall's team, Hall being one of the most experienced and respected climbers and guides in the world. They were about to witness one of the deadliest days in the mountain's history. A storm rolled in on summit day that ultimately left eight people dead. This is Krakauer's personal account of that expedition, relying on interviews with others to corroborate his experiences and provide perspective.Pairing: A hot cup of Masala Chai.Carrie's PickCarrie went on an adventure with The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee, a YA novel that takes place in the 18th century. Felicity Montague wants to become a doctor, but the English and Scottish hospital boards she appeals to for apprenticeship turn her down because of her gender. When she learns that one of her medical idols is about to marry her childhood best friend and may need an assistant, she sets out for Germany to plead her case. What follows is a quest with two other young women involving pirates, a voyage to Algeria, and (spoiler alert!) sea monsters.Pairing: Shakshouka, an Algerian dish of eggs poached in a sauce of tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapeno, onion, and spices. My special guest is Paul Wilson who's here to discuss his new book detailing one of the wildest close call trips to Mexico you've ever heard in your life. It's amazing he made it back alive! Find out more in his book 'Bad Karma: The Trie Story of a Mexico Trip from Hell**Attention** Please tap follow or subscribe in your podcast app AGAIN to make sure you're connected to our new feed for the newest releases. In the summer of 1978, twenty-one-year-old Paul Wilson jumps at the chance to join two local icons on a dream surf trip to mainland Mexico, unaware their ultimate destination lies in the heart of drug cartel country. Having no earthly idea of where he'll get the money to pay his share, and determined to prove his mettle, he does the only thing he can think of: He robs a supermarket. And, if karma didn't already have enough reason to doom the trip, he soon learns one of his companions is a convicted killer on the run, and the other an unscrupulous cad. Mishap and misfortune rule the days, and mere survival takes precedence over surfing.Original photographs (including pre-kingpin El Chapo), and Wilson's strong narrative style, combine to make this true story personal—in the tradition of Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer, and Motorcycle Diaries by Che Guevara—except this tale had to wait for the statute of limitations to expire before it could be told.“Could Not Put It Down. Loved it!! Descriptive, heartfelt and funny. So good!” – Wanda B. Weaver“Bad Karma has instantly joined the pantheon of great adventure writing!”– Elizabeth Howard“One of the funniest true stories I've ever read.”– Penny Pennell"Fear and Loathing goes to Mexico"– Neil P. Reid“This book should be a movie!” “…truth is often stranger than fiction.”– Lori"Exhilarating, raw, PURE...A Story we all wish we'd lived through! The style of writing only adds to the epic tale here.” “…an important, succinct and easy read"– Kathleen S. Gray“Inspiring and Authentic Story.”– Audra Krell“Rockin' good time!”– Donna Ellen“Haven't read a book this fun in 30 years.”– Tracy Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
