That Pretentious Book Club

Send us a textWelcome to Season 5 Episode 14 of That Pretentious Book Club! In this episode Gino and Wheezy discuss the absolutely gripping thriller The Fury by Alex Michaelides. This novel takes place on a private Greek island when an ex-movie star's spontaneous vacation is derailed by a shocking murder, told in a series of five acts by an unreliable narrator who--let's face it--we would all love to be friends with (at least for a little while). This story takes the locked-door-murder-mystery trope and turns it on its head for a high stakes, fast-paced, irresistible story rife with allusions to Greek mythology and reflections on the human condition.  Skippers jump to 28:00 Pour yourself a cup of tea (or a "perfect" martini), raise a pinky, and join the club for this discussion of The Fury!Support the showFind this episode's book and more by shopping at https://bookshop.org/shop/storysirensstudio to support the club AND local bookstores!Visit us at storysirensstudio.com or find us on social media @thatpretentiousbookclub.Check out sister podcast The Scripturient Society for writers and join our writing group and chat hub on Discord! Alex Michaelides has again written a complex novel with numerous twists and turns and a crazy ending. Ex-movie star Lana Farrar takes her husband Jason and teen son Leo to her private Greek island for Easter. Also included were friends Elliot and Kate, and housekeeper Agathi. The story is told by an unreliable narrator and unfolds across five acts - like a Greek tragedy. Just wait until the end! We enjoyed a 2022 Semeli Moschofilero and Sauvignon Blanc white blend that was vibrant and floral while discussing the colorful history of Greece, the mythology, and its wines. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/readingbetweenthewines/support

Tune in as Andy (Fat Dude Digs Flicks Movie Podcasts) returns to 2CC for a review and recap of The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides, the 2018 thriller novel that follows the twists and turns of forensic psychotherapist Theo Faber's mission to unlock the truth behind Alicia Berenson, the notorious painter who hasn't spoken even once after apparently murdering her husband years ago (yes, she's the eponymous “silent patient”). Talking points that Arthur and Andy bring up throughout this bookish episode include the noir vibe that runs throughout TSP, the despicable bigotry of J.K. After a quick treatise on the Murderbot Diaries, Sam's all jazzed up about the new release coming in February from Kirsten Bakis, who has taken 25 years to release a second novel after the revelatory "Lives of the Monster Dogs." A classic gothic tale, "King Nyx" is a creepy feminist text you need to read ASAP. Unfortunately, Hannah is less jazzed about the new Alex Michaelides, "The Fury," which Hannah found at times "unacceptable." Just how much unreliable narrator can one book have? And just how many islands are there in the world? Seems like every novel is set on one nowadays, including Rachel Lyon's "Fruit of the Dead," which is, like King Nyx, is on an island and features some Hades mythology.  Maybe islands make things intersting, since Hannah thought "Mercury," set in middle America, was kinda boring, with not much happening. Is this only set in the '90s so Amy Jo Burns didn't have to deal with phones? It's unclear. Then we get into a bit of a grab bag, including a graphic novel in the Grishaverse; a new YA amnesia number called "That's Not My Name" that Hannah found satisfying; the new George Harrison biography; and a book by a fantasy writer called "Listen" about how and why we listen to music. Finally, we wrap up with a tease of Kelly Link's debut novel, which, WATCH OUT.
