Indy shares a few of his favourite Mexican novels, like; Pedro Paramo, Like Water For Chocolate, Hurricane Season, & more. Samantha takes the next step in her Outlander fandom as she begins to read Diana Gabaldon's novels, and we prepare for next week's feature; the Italian classic Cinema Paradiso!  I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha and Indy Randhawa Cinema Paradiso is a 1988 coming-of-age comedy-drama film written and directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. Set in a small Sicilian town, the film centres on the friendship between a young boy and an aging projectionist who works at the titular movie theatre. The Italian-French co-production stars Philippe Noiret, Jacques Perrin, Antonella Attili, Pupella Maggio and Salvatore Cascio. The film score was composed by Ennio Morricone and his son, Andrea, marking the beginning of a collaboration between Tornatore and Morricone that lasted until Morricone's death in 2020. Credited with revitalizing Italy's film industry, Cinema Paradiso has been cited as one of the greatest films of all time, and a world cinema classic.[3] The ending is considered among the greatest endings in film history. It was a commercial success, and won several awards, including the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film[4] and the Cannes Film Festival's Grand Prix. It was nominated for 11 BAFTA Awards and won five; including Best Actor for Philippe Noiret, Best Supporting Actor for Salvatore Cascio, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Foreign Language Film, a record for a foreign language feature until it was broken by All Quiet on the Western Front in 2023.

Two Hearts and One Braincell: Cassidy Carson & JT Hume Amateur Hour

We here at the “Amateur Hour” invite writers to join us to chat about the craft of writing. This week, KJ Waters shares her journey as a writer, detailing her experiences from the initial inspiration sparked by natural disasters to the challenges of marketing her books. She discusses the evolution of her writing process, the importance of planning in a series, and the influence of her favorite authors. She began her writing journey in 2005, spurred by the dramatic backdrop of four major hurricanes striking Florida shortly after she moved there with her young children. This tumultuous period ignited her creativity, leading her to explore the idea of time travel, inspired by her love for Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. KJ realized that the excitement of hurricanes intertwined with time travel could form the basis of a captivating narrative. She spent ten years crafting what she initially thought would be a single book. However, as she shared her ideas with friends, they encouraged her to expand her story into a series. KJ also reflects on the balance between creativity and the business side of writing, offering insights into the realities of being an independent author. The discussion culminates in a fun segment where KJ answers unique questions about her life and writing philosophy, leaving listeners with valuable takeaways about the writing journey. You can learn more about KJ and access her books at her website: https://www.kjwaters.com/Her books are available at Amazon, and her social media includes Facebook, TikTok, and Twitter/X. +++Cassidy Carson and JT Hume (“CC & JT”) are independent writers, publishers, and co-owners of Two Moore Books, LLC out of Carson City, Nevada, USA. December 2025: Madeline Martin's The Secret Book Society

For The Love With Jen Hatmaker Podcast

Description:Today, we're stepping into the candlelit, corseted world of Victorian England with New York Times bestselling author Madeline Martin—a master of emotionally rich, meticulously researched historical fiction. Madeline's novels (The Last Bookshop in London, The Librarian Spy, The Keeper of Hidden Books) have introduced millions of readers to hidden corners of history where ordinary people wield books as lifelines, rebellion, and hope. Her latest work and our December JHBC pick, The Secret Book Society, is no exception. Set in an era when women were warned that reading could “inflame the imagination,” The Secret Book Society follows Lady Duxbury—a thrice-widowed countess trailed by scandalous whispers—who covertly gathers a small circle of women for tea…and contraband literature. What begins as shared curiosity blooms into a daring underground society where women read the stories they've been forbidden, claim a power they've been denied, and build the kind of sisterhood that can spark a quiet revolution. In this conversation, we pull back the velvet curtain on: how real Victorian restrictions inspired her fictional rebellion the archival rabbit holes that uncovered surprising truths about women, reading, and resistance the power of “found family” in times of surveillance, judgment, and constraint why stories become sanctuaries when the world demands silence Thought-provoking Quotes: “Reading can really provide such lightness in dark times.” – Madeline Martin “Every book that I've written, I have been to the location where it is set. And I've been able to get that really wonderful firsthand experience of being there. I feel like it takes this black and white world and colors it in this really vivid, wonderful way that lets me accurately convey it onto the book for hopefully what makes for a very evocative read for the reader.” –  Madeline Martin “If you read a book and it's so good you can't put it down, you read it over the course of a weekend, and you can viscerally recall every part of that story, from what the character drank and ate, to what they wore, to that snarky little one-liner that they gave the antagonist. But if you took six months to read that book, you might have a different experience. So for me, when I get to write that book in one month, it's like I'm living in their skin, and I'm living in their heads.” – Madeline Martin Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Outlander by Diana Gabaldon - https://amzn.to/4iv5e3C The Last Bookshop in London: A Novel of World War II by Madeline Martin - https://amzn.to/4pKU0uq For the Love: Fighting for Grace in a World of Impossible Standards by Jen Hatmaker – https://amzn.to/48AqikP A Time of Witches: A Novel by Madeline Martin – https://amzn.to/3MBpnJl The Forgotten Pages by Madeline Martin – coming 2027 Goodreads 2025 Reading Challenge – https://www.goodreads.com/readingchallenges?ref=rc_summerreading_25 The Hope Keeper: A Novel by Heather Webb –https://amzn.to/48uJkc2 The Lotus Shoes: A Novel by Jane Yang – https://amzn.to/447ANuy Guest's Links: Website - https://madelinemartin.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/madelinemmartin/ Twitter - https://x.com/MadelineMMartin Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/MadelineMartinAuthor Pinterest - https://www.instagram.com/madelinemmartin/ Substack - https://authormadelinemartin.substack.com/subscribe Connect with Jen!Jen's Website - https://jenhatmaker.com/ Jen's Instagram - https://instagram.com/jenhatmakerJen's Twitter - https://twitter.com/jenHatmaker/ Jen's Facebook - https://facebook.com/jenhatmakerJen's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/JenHatmaker The For the Love Podcast is presented by Audacy. From her unexpected start in writing—sparked by Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series—to her reflections on the evolving publishing landscape, Karen shares insights into her creative process, her beloved characters, and the importance of community in a writer's life. Plus, she gives us a peek into her latest ghost-filled mystery set in New Orleans, where murder houses and restless spirits collide. Key Takeaways: Karen's writing journey began unexpectedly after reading Outlander and entering a contest judged by Diana Gabaldon, which launched her career.  The Lady on Esplanade is the third book in a spin-off series from her beloved Tradd Street novels, featuring fan-favorite character Nola Trenum. The novel blends mystery, ghostly encounters, and emotional depth, as Nola and her nemesis Bo flip a haunted murder house in New Orleans.  Karen reflects on the challenges of modern publishing, including the pressure for authors to be influencers and entertainers. She emphasizes the importance of writing community and friendships with fellow authors like Lauren Willig and Beatriz Williams. Karen shares personal stories about her dog Sophie, life after loss, and the joys and challenges of being a pet parent. He's an author, entrepreneur and adventurer. He hosted a hit travel series Men in Kilts, wrote a travel memoir, Waypoints, and he's the driving force behind his award-winning spirits brands The Sassenach Whisky and Sassenach Gin. His brand-new book The Cocktail Diaries, a collection of recipes and stories inspired by his favourite drinks and places, is out this September.I caught up with Sam halfway across the world to talk about the places that matter most to him.Destination Recap:Sydney, AustraliaDumfries and Galloway, Scotland Edinburgh, Scotland Isle of Eigg, Scotland Hemel Hempstead, England San Francisco, USA tour Scotland, Outlander shooting locations The Green Welly, Glencoe, Scotland The King House Hotel, Glencoe, Scotland Mt Everest, Nepal Hawaii, USACape Town, South AfricaDeluxe Coffeeworks, Cape Town, South AfricaWilloughby & Co, Cape Town, South AfricaBabylonstoren, Western Cape, South Africa Tamarama Beach, Sydney, AustraliaNew Zealand Santa Cruz, California Bali, Indonesia Indian HimalayasSam's new book, “The Cocktail Diaries” is out in September and is available to preorder now. Do you love historical romance? Do you want to learn what makes a first chapter capture a reader's (and literary agent's!) attention? Then you need today's episode. In today's episode, book coach and developmental editor Savannah Gilbo returns for a deep dive into the uber-popular, time-traveling romance, OUTLANDER by Diana Gabaldon. This conversation is jam-packed with insightful tips on how to pull readers into your story with world-building, set ups, and memorable, interesting characters without slowing the pace. Some other topics Savannah and I explore include: How to write an intriguing opening (and scenes) with what can sometimes feel like less intense stakes How many scenes are in this first chapter, and why each models a well-structured scene How to plant set ups and share meaningful backstory without dragging down the pace Plus, more! By the time you finish this episode, you'll know how to identify and answer some important questions that first chapters need in order to set up reader expectations. You'll also take away a handful of tools that you can use to tighten and polish well-structured scenes. So pick up a notebook and get ready to learn! P.S. Happy Valentine's Day! Romance, historical fiction & fantasy writers—tune in to learn how the opening pages of Outlander hook readers into the story. In this listener-voted episode, I team up with developmental editor and book coach Abigail K. Perry to analyze the opening chapter of Diana Gabaldon's genre-defying masterpiece, Outlander, on a macro and micro level. And truth be told, this might be one of our most challenging chapter analyses yet, but you'll learn exactly what makes these opening pages super engaging so you can apply it to your own writing. Here's what we cover:[07:13] An Outlander chapter summary that reveals how Gabaldon masterfully sets up relationship tension and an interesting open loop that becomes hugely important later.[13:05] A chapter one macro analysis using the seven questions from Paula Munier's book, The Writer's Guide To Beginnings, to break down what makes this opening so spot-on (from genre to character to stakes).[39:50] How Gabaldon built Outlander's plot around three major story peaks to keep readers glued to the page. (I found this gem on her website and had to share it with you.)[43:01] A microanalysis of the two scenes within the first chapter using the "5 Commandments of Storytelling" from Shawn Coyn's book, The Story Grid—to learn how to make your quiet moments as compelling as the action-packed ones.[56:33] A discussion on how to write tricky relationship moments and emotional turning points in a way that feels natural and not forced. Whether you're writing historical fantasy, time travel romance, historical romance, or any genre-bending story, you'll get a fantastic overview of how Diana Gabaldon crafted an opening chapter that launched a global phenomenon (so you can do the same for your own novel). Tune in now.

Mary & Blake recap and give reaction to Outlander episode 7.14 - Ye Dinna Get Used To It. In this episode, we praise Diana Gabaldon's handling of the writing, discuss the character development, particularly highlighting Lord John Gray's encounters and the relationship between William and Jane. We also touch on the pacing of the episode, noting that while it may have felt like "heavy lifting" to set up future events, Gabaldon executed it with levity and care. We also debate cheese and mold, share our theories and predictions about where the story might be headed, particularly in regards to the ongoing conflict with the British. Also in this episode: Praise for Diana Gabaldon's writing:  this episode required a lot of "heavy lifting" to set up future plot points, but they praise Gabaldon's execution, noting she was able to do so with levity and care. Analysis of Lord John Gray's character: Lord John's encounters with various people from his past, and how this is impacting his emotional state and allegiances, comparing it to listening to "tortured poets." Appreciation for the Jane-William dynamic:  the interesting relationship between Jane and William, noting how Jane serves as a foil to William's attempts to redefine himself after learning Jamie is his biological father. Speculation on Jane's fate: The hosts theorize that Jane's bold actions, such as killing a British captain, will likely lead to her demise by the season's end, and how this will profoundly impact William. Critique of the Rob Cameron storyline: boredom with this storyline, feeling it was "shoehorned in" just to get Bree back to the 18th century, and lacking a sense of urgency. Appreciation for the Ian-Rachel scene: thel ighting and character dynamics in the scene where Ian teaches Rachel how to do war paint, noting the symbolic significance of the candles behind them. Debate over historical accuracy: Claire's lack of knowledge about historical figures like Charles Lee, and speculate on how Jamie's relationship with George Washington might impact the story. Personal preferences and anecdotes: lighthearted discussion about their personal preferences, such as Blake's dislike for blue cheese and Mary's love of bangs.     SUBSCRIBE TO OUTLANDER CAST: AN OUTLANDER PODCAST Apple Podcasts YouTube Spotify CONNECT WITH MARY & BLAKE  Like Our Facebook Page Join Our Facebook Group Join The #NerdClan Follow On Twitter  Follow On Instagram  UNLOCK BONUS EPISODES, PREMIUM PODCASTS & MORE -- www.JoinTheNerdClan.com Sign up  HERE for Blake's Book Club: DRUMS OF AUTUMN CHECK OUT THE BEST MERCH ON THE PLANET: THE MARY & BLAKE STORE Shop for all of our podcasts, sayings, and listener inspired designs in one easy place. Historical Novel Society Conference 2024! I don't think Diana Gabaldon needs much of an introduction! We were lucky enough to sit down with her at the conference for an interview. Author of the Outlander novels which have also been made into the HUGELY successful Starz TV show, Diana was funny, friendly, generous with her time, and gave us probably the best answer EVER to the question, "What do you listen to when you write?" Do NOT miss this interview! We talked about her planned novel Red Ant's Head, how her lead female character guided her to create the Outlander series, and, of course, Dwarf Metal! https://www.dianagabaldon.com/ Windrose - "Diggy Diggy Hole" -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34CZjsEI1yU Join us on Patreon for monthly bonus episodes, a FREE copy of our book Tips for Writing, Publishing and Marketing Your Novel, and more perks. patreon.com/RockPaperSwordsPodcast Find out more about the Historical Novel Society (and become a member) here - https://historicalnovelsociety.org/

Aye lads and lassies and wee bairns (wait, this is no place for wee bairns!) This is our hundredth episode, to our vast surprise, so we're gonna make enemies and talk about Outlander! He's Jamie, the only feminist in eighteenth century Scotland! She's Claire, a time traveling nurse with a boring husband! Buckle up, sassenachs, because if you know this book you know you're about to trip over a giant content warning. The book, the TV show, and absolutely this podcast have a great big neon "sexual assault" warning on them. There is no ignoring the rape in Outlander - it's an omnipresent (and equal opportunity!) threat, it's not something you could just skip a few pages and miss, they probably don't even have a word for it in the way that fish don't have a word for water. Forget it, Jake, it's Outlander. It's traumatic and has real emotional and physical consequences and if it's something you prefer to avoid you definitely should not read, watch, or listen here. There's also some... I don't know how to put this, some spousal discipline? It doesn't really read as abusive, but he does hit her with a belt, which half of us were kinda into and half of us were absolutely not into, so your mileage may vary. And of course there's quite a bit of beating and murdering and witch burning and torturing, just for variety.

These novels transport readers to different eras, from the elegant ballrooms of Regency England in Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" to the tumultuous American Civil War in Margaret Mitchell's "Gone with the Wind." Authors like Diana Gabaldon, with her "Outlander" series, blend historical accuracy with compelling characters and time-traveling adventures, while Philippa Gregory's Tudor novels delve into the intrigue and romance of royal courts. These books often feature strong, complex heroines and dashing heroes, navigating societal constraints and personal dilemmas to find love. Through evocative prose and meticulous research, historical romance novels offer a lush, immersive escape into the past, exploring themes of love, honor, and destiny amidst the backdrop of history's most captivating periods.

Up this week is Donna Russo, an internationally best-selling author of 11 multiple award winning historical novels, including “Gilded Dreams” and “Gilded Summers”, a trio of books about Leonardo da Vinci, including “Portrait of a Conspiracy,” “The Competition,” and “The Flames of Florence.” Her newest book, “Vincent's Women” is just out, and tells the story of everyone's favorite tortured artist through the lens of the women in his life. (I have to point out Vincent's women managed to get 4. 3 stars on Goodreads, which is not easy to do. Goodreads readers are very sparing with their five star ratings.) Donna is also an award winning screenwriter, a ghostwriter, and an editor. And she's an actor who appeared in Martin Scorsese's “The Departed,” as well as Showtime's “Brotherhood.” And, she's a painter” I'm so thankful she joined us, because she clearly has a lot of things that take up her time! We covered: How reading “Gone with the Wind” and “The Thorn Birds” as a kid sparked a devotion to historical fiction How a ‘grand pity party' after yet another bad date led to the idea for “Vincent's Women” How meeting Diana Gabaldon (author of The Outlander series and historical fiction OG!) at a conference spurred Donna on Her first gig as a writer–that happened in sixth grade How she sold her first book quickly and easily–and pretty much everything since then has been a struggle The truth about why she does so many different things The brass tacks of how she writes her book, from which chapter she writes first to how she lays out her computer monitor so that her research is always right at hand How she wrote her friends into one of her books The food and drink the fuels her writing Visit Donna at donnarusso.com.
