The British writer LP Hartley opened his novel “The Go-Between” with an unforgettable line “The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.” There's a long-standing idea of literature being a vehicle to explore these “foreign countries”, be they temporal or geographical or cultural.  My guest today has been one of the most innovative voices with regard to the immigrant experience, especially through his 2007 novel “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao”. Junot Díaz is a Dominican-American writer who won the Pulitzer Prize for that novel, thanks to its incredibly modern story-telling. The prose was insane, with different characters' vernacular switching on and off, the timelines, inspirations, characters felt incredibly fresh and exciting. It's the story of a young Dominican-American boy who navigates this new world of America, whilst pining for the homeland of the Dominican Republican, and he copes with this, and with the turmoil of adolescence, by immersing himself in typical teen nerd culture of comics, and sci-fi. If you haven't read that book, then I strongly suggest that you do. Junot Diaz is now a Professor of Creative Writing at MIT (the Massachussetts Institute of Technology) as well as a contributing editor to the Boston Review of Fiction. In this episode, we talk about his inspirations for his work, his process and what makes him tick as an artist. A list of the books mentioned in the episode: The book I've never heard of: Incantations and Other Stories, by Anjana Appachana (1991) Best book of the last 12 months: “The Sellout” by Paul Beatty (2015) Most disappointing book of the last 12 months: “Star Maker”, by Olaf Stapledon (1937) Which book would he take to a desert island: Either “Beloved” by Toni Morrison (1987) or “Dhalgren”, a sci-fi novel by Samuel Delany (1975) What book changed his mind: “City of Quartz” by Mike Davis (1990) Follow me @litwithcharles for more book reviews and recommendations!

How Did They Get There

Alfredo de Villa directs films which layer complex characters onto the backdrop of vibrant emotions; irreverent humor and interweaving narrative themes which take the lead. They carry the weight of strong characters as they brace themselves for the reality they're immersed in after not realizing the fact until someone, or something or their own voice rises to the surface and informs who they really are. His first film, Washington Heights, is a testament to that reality. Alfredo accompanied the juxtaposition of art, comics, familial love and respect with the culturally-diverse eponymous New York City neighborhood which acted as his canvas. The film, which Alfredo co-wrote with Pulitzer prize-winner Junot Diaz, starred Tomas Milian and Manny Perez, and featured Bobby Cannavale and Danny Hoch in supporting roles, and was released at the Tribeca Film Festival where it was acquired by Lionsgate. He next directed the dance-centered Yellow, which featured Roselyn Sanchez, Bill Duke and D.B. Sweeney on which he had mixed experiences; however, it allowed him to finance his third film - the seminal Adrift in Manhattan, which premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival in Dramatic Competition. The film featured riveting performances from Heather Graham, Victor Rasuk and Dominic Chianese alongside Elizabeth Peña, William Baldwin and Marlene Forte. His next film Nothing Like the Holidays, brought him back to his stylistic roots in terms of form and humor, and was made for Overture Films. It featured an ensemble cast helmed by Alfred Molina, Debra Messing, Luis Guzman, Freddie Rodriguez, Jay Hernandez, Melonie Diaz and reunited him with Elizabeth Peña, who played the matriarch of a Chicago, Puerto Rican family in Humboldt Park. Then came the comically-hilarious Fugly, based on John Leguizamo's one-man show, Ghetto Klown, starring Leguizamo opposite Radha Mitchell, Rosie Perez and Griffin Dunne. He is also a prolific commercial director, and graduate of Columbia's MFA program. In our conversation, we discussed his Mexican upbringing; mental health undertones in his work; films which influenced his diverse cinematic palate; and showing his son Pulp Fiction for the first time.Opening Credits: HoliznaCC0 - Sick With Love I CC0 1.0 Universal (CC0 1.0) Public Domain Dedication; Crowander - Sloopy I Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0); Closing Credits: Siddhartha Corsus - The Fire of Your Peace I Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0).

Rafael Trujillo was Generalissimo of the Dominican Republic from 1930 until his assassination in 1961. The violence deployed by his regime was extraordinary, with Trujillo's men murdering an estimated 30,000 Haitians in a matter of weeks in 1937, not to mention thousands of Dominicans across three decades, in what my guest today describes as the violence of the Trujillo plantation. Trujillo's story, and indeed the story of the Dominican Republic, can be read as a story of domination, perhaps suffocation, by the United States. The image of the United States as the Great Satan in the World, which can only do wrong, is a simplistic and misleading one, but it isn't difficult to see where it comes from if you read about the Caribbean and Latin America. My guest today is Junot Diaz. Junot is a Dominican-American author, who has written multiple novels including The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2008. He is also a Professor of Creative Writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his insights on the experience of growing up Dominican in the United States are fascinating.

They then move onto late breaking Twitter news (now known as “old news”). How did a major ‘80s talent just … disappear? We answer that question and discuss the cultural impact of the 1980 musical Fame, which is like a blueprint for our American Idol-inspired, TikTok-addled moment. The Alan Parker movie may be remembered for its kick-ass theme song (and lesser TV adaptation), but the film holds up, kinetic and dark and deeply ambivalent about a career in the arts. Also, both Sarah and Nancy were obsessed with it. Nancy tells us about a doxxing controversy in Portland among black-bloc activists, who are angling for their own kind of fame. Then we discuss Ben Smith's story on disgraced novelist Junot Diaz, including what it means to “forcibly kiss” someone (we both know from experience). In the subscriber-only bonus content, we come to different conclusions about the new Hulu series “Fleishman Is In Trouble,” though we both agree the show runner and author of the novel, Taffy Brodesser-Akner, is one of the best cultural observers out there. On this week's episode, Sonny Bunch (The Bulwark), Alyssa Rosenberg (The Washington Post), and Peter Suderman (Reason), talk about the sad state of Junot Diaz. Semafor's Ben Smith interviewed the novelist about his odd career limbo; why can't folks who were accused of misbehavior before being exonerated get their reputations back? Then the gang shifts to a cleaner Me Too target: Harvey Weinstein and the movie She Said, based on the book by Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor about their efforts to unveil the producer's monstrous behavior towards women. Sadly the movie isn't that good, and we try to understand why. (On this episode we also mention Ken Auletta's book, Hollywood Ending; Sonny talked to him a couple of months back about Weinstein and his enablers.) Make sure to swing by Bulwark+ on Friday for our bonus episode on Chinese protests against draconian Covid lockdowns and the desire among the people for “cinema freedom.”

Stephen Mills is the author of CHOSEN: A Memoir of Stolen Boyhood, in which he recounts his childhood sexual abuse by a summer camp director, the long painful process of recovery, and his quest to stop a serial predator and find justice. The New York Times has called the book "a searing, haunting, urgent cri de coeur." The Pulitzer-prize-winning novelist, Junot Diaz, says CHOSEN is "a work of shattering, almost unbearable radiance. It is destined to be a classic because this is a book that will save lives.Since 1983, he has advised and written for an array of public interest organizations in the fields of human rights, civil liberties, and the environment. He is honored to serve as an Ambassador for CHILD USA, the leading nonprofit fighting for the civil rights of children. In This EpisodeStephen's websiteThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5739761/advertisement

As the cohort continued, we learned that building the capacity to practice transformative justice takes immense and consistent personal work. We're talking the basics of being human, like self reflection, and how to communicate. These personal inquiries into how we live our values, and how we respond to our inevitable mistakes, were like portals into the heart of TJ. 10 Things I Learned from Junot Diaz: 1. “Unless it's breaking you, why would anyone else care?” 2. Give readers a chance to interact with the work - don't chew it up and put it in their mouths. Let them come to different conclusions. Give them choices to let them decide what to think.  3. Writers cannot be "in cahoots" with the story - safeguard a space for the reader in the story. The story shouldn't be dictated by the author. 4. Memory is contained and not dangerous. Memory work disrupts the immersion of the story because the character is not immersed in remembering 5. 1st POV should not try to discharge the function of 3rd POV 6. Withholding information is not developing character or plot. Non-information creates disinterest. 7. With characters, take away the one thing you think is important and see what you have left. Allow them to interact with others to let the reader see who they really are. Scaling with at least 2 others allows you to triangulate. 8. We look away to spare ourselves from feeling the pain and hope the reader will do the work for us. By taking the reader into our pain, we can be seen. 9. Always Be Building Character 10. Tend to your wound. Integrate it and write from there. Balance the person and the artist. Tend to your personhood so that if you never write again, you'll still love yourself. Naseem is a Persian, queer, nonbinary, writer, neuroscientist, baker, and nerd. Peppered throughout, we explore themes, topics, and inspirations surrounding Naseem's debut novella, The Bruising of Qilwa (now available wherever you buy your books!). We spend some time unpacking the beast that can be the MFA writer's workshop and spend some time dreaming of what a better world for QTBIPOC writers could look like. We also dig a bit into the decision to leave science and pursue writing full-time and how doing so honored Naseem's shadow in so many gorgeous, gorgeous ways. I've known Naseem for quite some time, so there's also plenty of riffing as only old friends can do, so stay tuned. For the Season Finale of Season 2, we are running Shorts a bit differently. We're reading, “The Cheater's Guide to Love,” by Junot Diaz published in the New Yorker in 2012. It is also the final story in Diaz's 2012 short story collection, This is How You Lose Her, which was a finalist for the US national book award. However today, we're discussing the relationship between the reader and the writer. Today we will be focusing on the tricky and murky question of: how do the actions of a writer impact your reading of their work?
