Greetings, fellow patients & survivors! In my last episode, I talked about my experience with reactive arthritis, a somewhat rare and unexpected side effect of BCG. With regained confidence in my stride, I discussed how I'm managing this debilitating problem with both diet and half dose treatments. I've had clear scopes, and things have been on the uptick! But just as I was coming into the final stretch of BCG and thought I had everything in hand, a proverbial "wrench" was thrown at me 100 mph, only one week after my last recorded episode. It was a rare and unexpected turn of events that I did not see coming, and it nearly cost me my vision. If you're just starting BCG, or you've already been on BCG for a while, you'll want to take a listen to this episode. It was several weeks after my 15th treatment that the rare and unexpected immuno-response set in. A shocker, for sure. Grab a cup of coffee, and settle in to learn a piece of information not often discussed on this journey we all share. Wishing you all peace, health and happiness in the days ahead. - Cindy *********************************************************** Links: Bilateral Uveitis After Intravesical BCG Immunotherapy for Bladder Carcinoma - https://bjo.bmj.com/content/86/6/706 Complications of Intravesical BCG Immunotherapy for Bladder Cancer - https://pubs.rsna.org/doi/10.1148/rg.2019180014 Bilateral Panuveitis Following Intravesical BCG Immunotherapy for Bladder Carcinoma - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20662661/ Managing Adverse Events of BCG Therapy - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4630183/ Clinical Spectrum of Complications Induced by Intravesical Immunotherapy BCG for Bladder Cancer - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30984262/ My web site - https://bladdercancertalk.com Special thanks to ValleyGreenNaturals.com for sponsoring this podcast of Bladder Cancer Patient-to-Patient and for making their fantastic, clean-ingredient personal care products available at a discount to our listeners! Hey Everyone! If you're starting BCG treatments, or you've already been on BCG for a while, you'll want to listen to this episode. I was cruising through my treatments until, shortly after treatment #9, I began to experience joint pain. After treatment #12, let's just say things got downright debilitating. In this episode, I discuss the BCG SWOG schedule, common side effects following treatments... and the not-so-common side effects that I experienced. The good news is, I've discovered a pretty effective way of managing these problems, which I share with you in this episode. As promised, the links I've mentioned in this episode are listed below. Those of us with bladder cancer have all faced the dilemma of telling our friends and loved ones about our diagnosis. In my case, it took 3 1/2 years for me to venture out of my cancer closet. But when I did, I discovered something really great. In this podcast episode, I'll talk about the difficulties I experienced in coming to terms with my own diagnosis and the challenges I faced in concealing my condition from others for quite some time. It wasn't until I realized that there's more uneasiness and anxiety in hiding my disease than there is in being open about it that my situation became less complicated, and in time... even rewarding. Yikes, cancer is costly! Not exactly one of my more upbeat podcasts, but financial toxicity is real, and cancer patients need solutions. In this podcast, I talk about the enormous costs involved in treating and managing bladder cancer; my own out-of-pocket expenses in just four years, and how dealing with the financial strains of ongoing care can take its toll on the mental and physical health and well-being of cancer patients. On a positive note, there are tools available to help with navigating the complex and costly cancer-highway, as well as some very good folks who are working on ways to ease the burden of expense, while continuing to provide quality care at all socio-economic levels. In this podcast, I mention TriageCancer.org, a site with a wealth of information and webinars on the financial and legal aspects of dealing with cancer, as well as the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, BCAN.org, whose tireless efforts in providing information to bladder cancer patients is unparalleled worldwide. Please be sure to register for BCAN's free "Ask the Experts" virtual event on May 25th at 7 pm. One of the featured physicians in this event is Dr. Sumeet Bhanvadia, Assistant Professor of Urology at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine. Dr. Bhanvadia was a winner of BCAN's Young Investigators Award for her study focusing on assessing the extent of financial toxicity experienced by bladder cancer patients across a broad range of race, ethnicity, insurance type and socio-economic status. Hey everyone! As someone who has lived an organic and natural lifestyle for the past 15 years, it seemed incomprehensible when I heard the words, "Bladder Cancer" while meeting with my urologist back in 2017. Those words have forever changed my life, and I've been left to wonder, as so many people do, "What did I do to cause this?" In this episode, I'll explore the many factors that can contribute to a bladder cancer diagnosis, as well as ways to steer clear of certain environmental toxins that may still haunt your household today. As promised in the episode, here is the link to the website for Berkey Water Purifiers. Keep in mind that your average water filter doesn't remove chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, BPAs, petroleum products and pharmaceuticals. The Berkey system is the only product I've used to cover all bases when it comes to having an ultra-clean water supply to our household. (Berkey is not a sponsor of this episode. I'm just a firm supporter of the product!) https://theberkey.com/ Please join my "Sharing is Caring" campaign to share a story from your bladder cancer journey! Hey everyone. Welcome to Bladder Cancer Patient-to-Patient. May I just mention that I am NOT a fan of diagnostics? Even with something as simple as blood work, I'm just a big chicken! Honestly, I think it's the fear of the "unknown" that gets to me. And when it's a test that has anything to do with "cancer," I'm sure you'll agree that can be upsetting enough. So when I learned -- before even being officially diagnosed with bladder cancer -- that I had to get a CT scan with contrast... well, let's just say my anxiety really kicked in. In this episode, I'll share with you my experience in having a CT Urogram; the reason why your doctor orders it, and what to expect when you go to have it done. If you'd like to read more about Urograms and radiological testing for urologic cancers, check out this page on BCAN.org. So your doctor saw a tumor in your bladder... What's next? Hey everyone. In this episode, I talk about my very first cystoscopy when my doctor determined that I had a tumor growing in my bladder... and what happened from there. Trans-Urethral Resection of Bladder Tumor (TURBT) surgery doesn't have to be scary if you know what to expect. This procedure is the first step in determining the path forward on your bladder cancer journey. I hope that by sharing my own experience with TURBT surgery, I can help to alleviate any fears or anxiety about this commonly performed procedure. In this podcast, I also mention the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (www.BCAN.org).
