With a family of origin riddled with alcoholism, abuse, and fractured relationships, Soleen was a disenfranchised child. She started drinking at 11 and progressed rapidly into alcoholic abuse. That latent disease deprived Soleen of adult supervision and good decision-making. She married at 14 and had a baby at 16 by a man nearly twice her age. Her budding alcoholism put Soleen in trouble with the law. As a way out of jail, she agreed to inpatient treatment at the first of many rehabs. By the time she was 19, she was still in lots of trouble, all of it fueled by drinking and drug abuse. Fortunately, the AA seed was planted while she was in the revolving door of four rehabs. Facing utter ruin, Soleen finally found AA at the end of a long, dark tunnel of despair. She surrendered to the Program for good and all when she was 26. That was nearly 22 years ago. Her involvement in AA has only grown over the years and she has helped countless women who could only be helped by her brand of experience and no-nonsense approach to the Program and continuous study of the Big Book. That she was able to survive a liquor-soaked adolescence and early adulthood to later working a strong AA Program is yet another example of God's grace in a recovering alcoholic's life. Soleen's brutal story is tough to hear, but will bolster every listener's gratitude for their own journey of sobriety. So enjoy the next 65 minutes with my friend and AA sister, Soleen M. If you've enjoyed my AA Recovery Interviews series and my Big Book Podcast, have a listen to Lost Stories of the Big Book, 30 Original Stories Missing from the 3rd and 4th Editions of Alcoholics Anonymous. It's an engaging audiobook I narrated to bring these stories to life for AA members who've never seen them. These timeless testimonials were originally cut to make room for newer stories in the 3rd and 4th Editions. But their vitally important messages of hope are as meaningful today as when they were first published. Many listeners will hear these stories for the first time. Lost Stories of the Big Book is available on Audible, Amazon, and iTunes. It's also available as a Kindle book and in Paperback from Amazon if you'd like to read along with the audio. I also invite you to check out my latest audio book, “Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered From Alcoholism”. This is the word-for-word, cover-to-cover reading of the First Edition of the Big Book, published in 1939. It's a comfortable, meaningful, and engaging way to listen to the Big Book anytime, anyplace. Have a free listen at Audible, i-Tunes, or Amazon. As a cancer survivor myself, I discussed dealing with bladder cancer while working the AA program. I offered insights on surviving these two fatal diseases, and how AA helped me through the cancer diagnosis without losing hope. For patients, families, care givers, and medical providers, I talked about Alcoholics Anonymous and its life-saving importance for those who want to get sober. I think you'll enjoy the interview. Greetings, fellow patients & survivors! In my last episode, I talked about my experience with reactive arthritis, a somewhat rare and unexpected side effect of BCG. With regained confidence in my stride, I discussed how I'm managing this debilitating problem with both diet and half dose treatments. I've had clear scopes, and things have been on the uptick! But just as I was coming into the final stretch of BCG and thought I had everything in hand, a proverbial "wrench" was thrown at me 100 mph, only one week after my last recorded episode. It was a rare and unexpected turn of events that I did not see coming, and it nearly cost me my vision. If you're just starting BCG, or you've already been on BCG for a while, you'll want to take a listen to this episode. It was several weeks after my 15th treatment that the rare and unexpected immuno-response set in. A shocker, for sure. Grab a cup of coffee, and settle in to learn a piece of information not often discussed on this journey we all share. We begin today with a conversation about the role of city government in the arts. The quasi-public city agency known as BOPA, the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts, came under fire a couple of weeks ago when it announced it was canceling the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade, an event that had been canceled for the last two years because of COVID. When BOPA issued a press release announcing the parade's cancelation on January 5, 2023 — less than two weeks from MLK Day — Rep. Kweisi Mfume issued a statement calling the decision “disrespectful” and “disgraceful.” BOPA issued what it called a “clarifying statement” that seemed to put blame for the decision in the Mayor's office. Within hours, Mayor Brandon Scott was calling for the resignation of BOPA's director, Donna Drew Sawyer, threatening to withhold city funding if she didn't leave. She did leave, a few days later, and the parade did take place on Monday. There are people who know whether or not the decision to cancel the parade emanated from the Mayor's office, or from BOPA, but they're not talking about it. Today on Midday, we're not going to re-hash what happened with the parade. But we do want to talk about the role that BOPA has played, and should play, in the artistic life of our city. Should promoting the city and serving as an arts council to advocate for creative artists be functions that are combined within one organization? When it comes to events like Artscape and the Baltimore Book Festival, two of the events that BOPA has traditionally produced, how important are they to the cultural life of the city? Tom's guests today are three arts advocates who have worked to advance the cause of the arts in Baltimore for years. Jeannie Howe is the executive director of the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance… Navasha Daya is an internationally acclaimed singer/songwriter, and the founder of the Youth Resiliency Institute... And Maggie Villegas is the founding director of BCAN, the Baltimore Creatives Acceleration Network. They all join Tom in Studio A.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week's guest is a friend of the podcast, Dr Gail Bradbrook. Best known for her role in co-founding Extinction Rebellion, Gail is one of our nation's (and our world's) deepest thinkers on radical change: what will it take to shift the juggernaut of predatory capitalism from the orgy of extraction, consumption and destruction that has brought us to the edge of crisis, and instead turn it towards a celebration of life in all its forms? Gail is also a leading beacon of practical activism - how can we bring the collective conversation to bear on the existential crises of our time? In our conversation, Gail honours the teachers that have helped her to find balance and insight, and to find practical, clear-eyed hope amidst all the potential for despair. We go on to explore her work in BCAN (see below) and, particularly, to explore the nature of horizontal organising. In a world where half the (western) population is wedded to the old hierarchical, patriarchal structures of top-down dominance, what happens in the other half when we experiment with other, less culturally familiar ways of being? Extinction Rebellion was one of the biggest, and most public expressions of horizontal organising in the modern contemporary world. A great deal of theory was put into practice and the results were often visible in newspaper headlines. Recorded a mere handful of days after the 'We Quit" press release from XR, we look at some of the lessons learned, and how we might do things differently next time. BIO:Dr Gail Bradbrook has been researching, planning, and training for mass civil disobedience since 2010 and is a co-founder of Extinction Rebellion (XR). Since its launch in October 2018, XR has spread around the world so that now, there are more than 1150 XR groups in 75 countries. Gail has trained in molecular biophysics, and her talk on the science of the ecological crisis, the psychology of active participation, and the need for civil disobedience has gone viral and been inspired many to join XR. She is from Yorkshire, the mother of two boys, the daughter of a coal miner, and was named by GQ as one of the top 50 influencers in the UK, and honoured in the 2020 Women's Hour Power list for her part in instigating a rebellion against the British Government.More recently, she is one of the cofounders of the Be the Change Affinity Network of XR activists exploring ways to shift our cultural rigidity into something regenerative and distributive by design. Gail is a genuine visionary leader - one of one of the deepest, most enlightened thinkers we know; living at the leading edge of change and exploring radical answers to the questions of our time. She's also deeply spiritual and emotionally thoughtful, and it's always an enormous joy to explore with her the big questions of our time: what are we here for and how can we shift the entire nature of our culture in practical ways? AUSTIN, Texas (Sept. 20, 2022) -- SmallCapVoice.com Inc. (“SCV”) announces the availability of a new interview with Yftah Ben Yaackov, CEO of BYND Cannasoft Enterprises Inc. (Nasdaq: BCAN) (CSE: BYND) (CNSX:BYND.CN) (“BYND” or the “Company”), to discuss the Company's operations, innovations and outlook for the coming year. The full interview can be heard at: https://www.smallcapvoice.com/2022-interview-bynd-cannasoft-bcan/. BYND is an Israel-based integrated software/cannabis company focused on the development of its customer relationship management (CRM) platform for the medical cannabis market. Speaking with SCV's Stuart Smith, Ben Yaackov discusses the Company's 20 years in the big data market and the decision to extend its expertise to growers, suppliers and researchers of medicinal cannabis. “BYND made a strategic decision about two years ago to try to arrange a software that will solve many problems that growers of medical cannabis have. Currently in the final stage of development, the software manages databases while integrating algorithm for maximizing and streamlining growing farms in general, and particularly medical cannabis farms,” he says. A professional lawyer since 2004, Ben Yaackov also has experience in project management and trading in medicinal cannabis. This combination has resulted in several corporate achievements and provides support for BYND's objectives moving forward. “2020, 2021 and the first half of 2022 were challenging and exciting at the same time,” he explains, highlighting BYND's listing on the Canadian CSE and NASDAQ capital markets earlier this year. The Company also recently acquired an Israel-based company with a patent-pending CBD treatment product, the EZ-G device, representing a $28 million transaction that Ben Yaackov says will add value to BYND as it seeks regulatory approval and patent registration. The EZ-G device uses proprietary software (provisional application) to regulate the flow of low-concentration CBD oils into the soft tissues of the female reproductive system to treat candida, dryness, scars and other health issues. “This, together with our great development in the software field and the preparations of obtaining the license to practice medical cannabis, makes the last two years a period of great prosperity and success,” he adds. “We are confident that it will bring significant value for the Company in the upcoming year.” Wrapping up 2022 and moving into 2023, Ben Yaackov says he expects to see continued progress in the Company's software development and sales expansion. Additionally, BYND is in the final stage of obtaining a license to engage in the sale of medical cannabis without connecting with the substance. “This is a special license that few have in Israel. It allows you to establish products in the medical cannabis field, a label of your own, through an existing grower that has the license to grow medical cannabis in Israel,” he explains. “That will bring us another revenue from the side of selling medical cannabis products, and above all that, I believe that we will significantly advance the new project and finish the patent registration and put other necessary regulations and build a prototype until the end of the fourth quarter of 2023.”

Yikes, cancer is costly! Not exactly one of my more upbeat podcasts, but financial toxicity is real, and cancer patients need solutions. In this podcast, I talk about the enormous costs involved in treating and managing bladder cancer; my own out-of-pocket expenses in just four years, and how dealing with the financial strains of ongoing care can take its toll on the mental and physical health and well-being of cancer patients. On a positive note, there are tools available to help with navigating the complex and costly cancer-highway, as well as some very good folks who are working on ways to ease the burden of expense, while continuing to provide quality care at all socio-economic levels. In this podcast, I mention TriageCancer.org, a site with a wealth of information and webinars on the financial and legal aspects of dealing with cancer, as well as the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, BCAN.org, whose tireless efforts in providing information to bladder cancer patients is unparalleled worldwide. Please be sure to register for BCAN's free "Ask the Experts" virtual event on May 25th at 7 pm. One of the featured physicians in this event is Dr. Sumeet Bhanvadia, Assistant Professor of Urology at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine. Dr. Bhanvadia was a winner of BCAN's Young Investigators Award for her study focusing on assessing the extent of financial toxicity experienced by bladder cancer patients across a broad range of race, ethnicity, insurance type and socio-economic status. Hey everyone. Welcome to Bladder Cancer Patient-to-Patient. May I just mention that I am NOT a fan of diagnostics? Even with something as simple as blood work, I'm just a big chicken! Honestly, I think it's the fear of the "unknown" that gets to me. And when it's a test that has anything to do with "cancer," I'm sure you'll agree that can be upsetting enough. So when I learned -- before even being officially diagnosed with bladder cancer -- that I had to get a CT scan with contrast... well, let's just say my anxiety really kicked in. In this episode, I'll share with you my experience in having a CT Urogram; the reason why your doctor orders it, and what to expect when you go to have it done. If you'd like to read more about Urograms and radiological testing for urologic cancers, check out this page on BCAN.org. It's a terrific site that's full of valuable information for bladder cancer patients like us. https://bcan.org/facing-bladder-cancer/bladder-cancer-diagnosing-and-monitoring/ Please join my "Sharing is Caring" campaign to share a story from your bladder cancer journey! In this episode, I talk about my very first cystoscopy when my doctor determined that I had a tumor growing in my bladder... and what happened from there. Trans-Urethral Resection of Bladder Tumor (TURBT) surgery doesn't have to be scary if you know what to expect. This procedure is the first step in determining the path forward on your bladder cancer journey.
