Broadway Block: A podcast about The New York Rangers

The New York Rangers are a puzzling team. It took them the better part of the season to string together 4 wins, win a back to back, or manage to produce really anything to get the fanbase excited. Since the break, the team is 6-3-2 following the loss on Wednesday night to the devils, which doesn't exactly sound amazing, but if that was scaled over the course of an 82 game season, it would be good for 102 points, and put them comfortably in the playoff mix. If there's any silver lining, Igor Shesterkin has been nothing short of incredible, the power play is clicking, and the top line of Mika Zibanejad, Alexis Lafreniere, and Gabe Perreault is simply a treat to watch. In just the last 9 games, the three has 34 combined for points and has connected for some incredible plays, demonstrating amazing chemistry. When the games don't matter and the points don't either, it's nice that there's at least something to watch, even without a winning result. If they win? I'm happy to watch. If they lose? The New York Rangers sure picked the worst time of the season to start playing good hockey. Since the Olympic break, the team has just one regulation loss, earning points in 6 of their last 7, with back-to-back wins by four goal margins. While these wins haven't necessarily come against the league's best teams, they certainly aren't taking their lotto standings into consideration before the game. The dynamic line of Mika Zibanejad centering Gabe Perreault and Alexis Lafreniere has been white hot, recording 14 points in a 24 hour span, combining for 20 total points in their 4 games together. It serves as amazing benchmark for the potential the Rangers youth has in their system, and it doesn't hurt to have some fun hockey to watch, regardless of if it's too little too late. With just days leading up to the trade deadline, the Rangers receive blow after blow in what has been an absolutely miserable season. With the NHL olympic break officially over, we anxiously look forward to Rangers hockey returning, even if the team is solidly out of a playoff picture. The final stretch for the Rangers leaves a lot of question marks, especially in the wake of team USA capturing gold for the first time in 46 years. With the NHL season on pause, we enter not only the roster freeze but the Olympic break while the New York Rangers currently hold the 3rd best odds at the number one overall pick in the upcoming NHL entry draft. Outside of some luck to get the 1st pick, which I don't think many Rangers fans are confident they could actually secure some franchise altering talent, we chat in this episode about other teams in a similar position that may be worth chatting with to drum up a potential trade. The news finally dropped just as the clock struck 3pm this afternoon, signaling the NHL roster freeze is now in place. "The Rangers Retool" has officially begun, and as predicted in last week's episode, it was done very shortly after the letter was released to the fans. In my opinion the return doesn't blow me out of the water, but Carson Soucy was a depreciating asset and not a part of the long term plan anyway, so it's nice to get some value for him. As for the next dominoes to fall? We've doubled down, and believe another trade will be made before we record next week. It's simply not smart to wait until the deadline proper and hold chips while the league is fully aware of your plan. The New York Rangers are officially spiraling out of control, and the fans are calling for General Manager Chris Drury to be fired with loud chants of "Fire Drury" at back to back home games. It started with a smattering to Boston with a 10-2 loss, the teams worst loss since 2009. After a rough OT loss to the Utah Mammoth, the New York Rangers were struck with awful news- they will be without their star goalie Igor Shesterkin for a period of time, and arguably worse news, Adam Fox will be back on LTIR after recently getting him back into the lineup. It's tough to say which injury will do the team in the most, but considering how well Quick has played, and the tenacity he has brought in the games he's played, there is nobody on the team quite like Adam Fox. In a dramatic comeback win, the Rangers never seem to be boring. After trailing in the third period, the team rallied back with 5 goals for the first time in over 50 years, and have the third most 3rd period comeback victories in the league. They're quite fascinating, because this is the same team that dropped a lifeless effort to the Predators, and were able to beat on a team above them in the standings with a flurry of offense after a low shot total for two straight periods. In what was an absolutely wild few days for the organization, it feels like hope has been slightly restored within the New York Rangers fanbase. Chris Drury deserves his flowers for unloading K'Andre Miller for, in my opinion, a lot more than people were suggesting he would get back. The Rangers fans just cant catch a break. After watching the team struggle to generate shots for the first period, mustering just two total on net before the first buzzer, I somehow convinced myself that it would be a good idea to stay up until 1am just to watch another devastating loss.
