Episode 182 of the "New Ice City" podcast analyzes New York Rangers' decision to hire Mike Sullivan as the 38th head coach in franchise history and the importance of forming a collaborative partnership with team president Chris Drury. Plus, host Vincent Mercogliano shares highlights from Sullivan's introductory press conference and offers his thoughts on the complicated choice the Blueshirts are facing after losing out on the NHL Draft lottery.
Somehow the Rangers have had some news break in the last week, as the so far eventful offseason has officially began. The first order of business, Chris Drury lands his man and likely first choice for head coach in Mike Sullivan just days after he left Pittsburgh. Mike represents the easy choice here, as a safe hire with tremendous upside given the cast of coaches who were available as the season ended. Drury followed his own multi year extension by awarding his pal Sullivan with the richest head coaching contract in NHL history. In this episode, we review the current playoff landscape, and how we feel about the most recent news in Rangers world.Today's episode is sponsored by BetterHelp - use the link below to save on your first subscription!BetterHelp:https://betterhelp.com/broadwayblockInstagram:https://www.instagram.com/broadway_blockTikTok:https://www.tiktok.com/@broadway_blockYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-4OSzH5NKz4EmhVCk0yaZgTwitter:https://twitter.com/Broadway_BlockApple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/broadway-block/id1646160199Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/3KqBFrqn7maexzAnVeqCUH

In what looked to be a far-fetched idea at the time, the New York Rangers and Chris Drury shocked the world, with only the second most surprising trade in sports this week. The trade for JT Miller was originally speculated to include Lafreniere, Chytil, plus a first round pick just to start, but the Rangers were able to only include the latter of the two with Mancini as the sweetener. On paper, the Rangers spent more money to get older, but anyone familiar with JT knows this price only comes around once...unless you were the Lightning in 2018. Regardless, I think it's fair to say the Rangers won this trade and are still not done tinkering. Episode 247: The (unofficial) first trade deadline of the 2024-2025 NHL season. If you're tall enough to have the reach to fix your mistakes, are you really an NHL-caliber player? Unsure what was in it for either team in the Calgary-Philadelphia trade. Dallas seems to be good at the scouting. How long does Chris Drury have as GM of the NY Rangers? Utah's naming quandary. This trade flurry possibly taking the wind out of the sails of the actual trade deadline, & the new salary cap projections. Amazon & the future of hockey broadcasting. Recorded 2 February 2025

At about the halfway mark through the season, the Rangers year thus far has been nothing short of a roller coaster- minus the part where we go back up. Tied for the bottom of the Metro wasn't on my bingo card, but Jen seems confident the Blueshirts can pull back within the race, and that Chris Drury hasn't finished wheeling and dealing. Episode 169 of the "New Ice City" podcast tries to make sense of a crazy week for the New York Rangers, which featured captain Jacob Trouba getting traded to the Anaheim Ducks, Igor Shesterkin signing a record-breaking extension and losses continuing to pile up. Plus, Emily Kaplan of ESPN joins the show to analyze how the Trouba trade went down, the odds of getting Brady Tkachuk and where the Blueshirts are looking for their next move and host Vincent Mercogliano answers fans questions regarding Mika Zibanejad, Adam Fox and Peter Laviolette.
With just 2 wins in their last 10 games, tied for worst in the NHL in that span, the New York Rangers are entering into very spooky territory. With their season in limbo, they made a huge move just 25 games into the season by trading their captain, along with his 8 million dollar cap hit. The move seemed to be foreshadowed this offseason, which begs the question why it wasn't done any sooner. Nevertheless, the one positive from this situation is that the team has rid themselves entirely from his lofty contract. Something tells me, based on they way the team has been playing, that Chris Drury is not yet satisfied. Episode 168 of the "New Ice City" podcast reacts to the turmoil surrounding the New York Rangers, who have lost six out of their last seven games and seem to be falling apart at the seams. Host Vincent Mercogliano reveals what he's hearing and his own analysis regarding team president Chris Drury's trade memo that put Chris Kreider and Jacob Trouba at the forefront of the rumor mill, how its resonating in the locker room and the missteps that got them to this breaking point.
The New York Rangers are in absolute free fall. The team has dropped 6 of their last 7 games, sit barely in a playoff spot, and would be behind teams like the Isles and Blue Jackets if not for their hot start. Despite that start, many fans thought this is exactly what would happen. What is Chris Drury left to do? After essentially bluffing to the world, claiming he was open to making trades, the team has given some of their worst efforts of the season. The core can and should be looked at, however as we tough on in this episode, it's not an ideal trade landscape once you've made it public what you're attempting to do.
