Having done next to no press during his offseason, we don't know why he chose to come on today either… but when the head coach of the Florida Panthers comes a knockin' we aren't going to stop him! Paul Maurice gives us his perspective of the 2023 NHL Playoffs today, answering every question Daren and John could possibly have about their improbable run to the cup and eventual loss. We get to spend some time looking forward too and Paul gives us an idea of what we should expect from the Panthers next year.
The time has come to discuss the NHL's Pacific Division. Leading off our Pacific breakdown are the defending Stanley Cup Champion, Vegas Golden Knights. This franchise has come into the NHL with a bang being the second team to ever get to the Stanley Cup Finals in their inaugural season. The Knights were not very active this offseason. They are currently more than four million dollars over the salary cap, which means they will have to find ways to get some cap relief before the season starts. The question for the Knights heading into this season is who will be the starting goaltender? We asked this question last year, too, with no Robin Lenher to possibly start the year again. This team found ways to prevail last season despite some pretty major injuries and found a way to win the Cup. Do the Knights have enough magic left to repeat? The Los Angeles Kings are an intriguing team this year. This team kind of came out of nowhere two years ago and found themselves back in the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. This franchise has a lot of young talent, but they also have their fair share of veteran leadership in guys like Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty. They were another team that wasn't overly active in free agency, but they have a lot of young, key pieces already in place. They spent this offseason filling only a couple holes they had. They were able to re-sign their big trade deadline acquisition Vladislav Gabrikov, who they landed from the Columbus Blue Jackets. Also, the Kings were able to acquire via trade and sign Pierre Luc Dubois from the Winnipeg Jets just before the NHL Draft. He signed a long-term deal to play in LA for the next eight years. The only real question the Kings have, just like Vegas, is their goaltending. Will it hold up? They had some issues with finding consistency there early in the season before letting Pheonix Copley take the reins. They also brought in Cam Talbot in net to help solidify the position. How deep of a run can the Kings make in the 2023/2024 season? The Anaheim Ducks look to continue their rebuild and make some progress as they head into the 2023/2024 season. They are coming off a season where they finished dead last in the NHL and landed the second overall pick in the NHL Draft Lottery. Ducks GM Pat Verbeek has left a few people scratching their heads, taking center Leo Carlsson with that pick over Adam Fantilli. The Ducks are fairly active this offseason, having the most cash to spend in free agency. Two of the names they brought in were defenseman Radko Gudas and Stanley Cup Champion winger Alex Killorn. Both guys bring a lot of leadership and experience to a young locker room that could benefit from having two players who have either been to or won a Stanley Cup to really get this team going. Goaltender John Gibson has expressed an interest in being traded; this will be an interesting storyline to keep an eye moving throughout the season. On a fun note, the Ducks Franchise will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary this season. What a nice way to celebrate their 30th by making their way back to the NHL Playoffs.
The New York Rangers are heading into the 2023/2024 season as one of the favorites to not only win the Metropolitan Division but to win the Eastern Conference. They had a very disappointing loss in round 1 to the New Jersey Devils in the NHL Playoffs last season. There were some changes in the franchise since the series loss. They fired head coach Gerard Gallant and hired Peter Laviolette in the summer. Some of the roster changes include the additions of Blake Wheeler, Nick Bonino and Erik Gustafsson. The Rangers also had a good draft, being able to select Gabe Perrault with the 23rd overall. Can this quick retool help the Rangers finally get back to the Stanley Cup Finals and win their first Cup since 1994? Now the team on the other side of the island, the New York Islanders, also had an underwhelming season. They finished their season 42-31-9 in the Metro Division before being booted out of the playoffs in round 1, falling to the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 in the series. After acquiring and signing Bo Horvat to a long-term deal at the NHL Trade Deadline, the Islanders really didn't have a lot of cap space to make any major outside-the-organization signings. They were able to re-up on big-time pending unrestricted free agents Pierre Engvall, Iyla Sorokin and Semyon Varlamov to nice contracts. There are still moves that need to be made to get the Isles back under the cap ceiling. Are these deals going to be good enough to make the Islanders a legit threat in the Metro Division? This next team is definitely going to be a wild card, no pun intended. The Washington Capitals are coming off one of their worst seasons in a long time. They finished 35-37-10 and placed sixth in the Metro. Many writers and media heads are starting to think this Washington team may be getting ready to rebuild. Now the Capitals entered this summer firing the now-Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette and replaced him with Spencer Carbery. Carbery, who was a coach in the Washington farm system before, is taking over after a short stint as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Similarly to the Islanders' roster, the Capitals are really tight to the salary cap. Washington may be closer to a rebuild for that reason, specifically. The only moves that the Caps were able to make are signing free agent Max Pacioretty, who's coming off a major Achilles injury, and signing winger Tom Wilson to a six-year extension through 2030-2031. The Capitals also had a great first two rounds of the NHL Entry Draft, selecting Ryan Leonard at pick eight and Andrew Cristall at pick 40. Even if this team is a bit older right now, the Capitals are setting to make the rebuild or retool quick and easy.

In this special edition of the pod, the guys dig into the #AskRayandDregsAnything mailbag, answering YOUR questions!! The guys lead things off with the Hockey Hall of Fame inductees, including Ray's former teammate Pierre Turgeon. Jerry is in for Boomer today as he's in Las Vegas filming promos for the NFL Today and the Super Bowl. We wonder which of the NFL Today guys could go to a strip club and not get recognized. Which of our local teams is closest to a championship? The Jets are probably 1 and the Mets or Yankees are probably 2. The Knicks are 3 according to Jerry but Gio said they may be 2. The Nuggets swept the Lakers and LeBron said it's the best team he's faced. Nikola Jokic was unstoppable in the series. C-Lo is in for Jerry and starts with a quick preview of Mets/Cubs tonight and Orioles/Yankees. A bird was hit by a hard hit ball by a Cleveland Guardian last night. It's the second bird killed at a baseball game in a week. LeBron had a huge first quarter but it wasn't enough as the Nuggets completed the sweep. The Jokic brothers were waving bye to Jack Nicholson and Lakers fans. LeBron said he has a lot to think about going forward in regards to the game of basketball. The Panthers shutout the Hurricanes 1-0 to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the series. In the final segment of the hour, the NFL owners voted to flex Thursday Night Football this season but there are a bunch of restrictions.
Hour 3 The Mets have a logjam at catcher and it may mean sending Francisco Alvarez down because he has options. That is going to piss off the fanbase. Tomas Nido has been out with dry eyes. Jerry loves the youth movement and doesn't want the Mets to rip it away right now. The Mets have a pelvic thrusting celebration going on these days. C-Lo returns for an update and starts with a preview of Mets/Cubs and Orioles/Yankees. The Tampa Rays made t-shirts in response to Carton & Roberts saying they must be cheating. The Nuggets came from behind to beat the Lakers, completing the sweep. LeBron had 40 points in the loss and had high praise for the Nuggets. Could LeBron be the missing piece for the Knicks? The Panthers beat the Hurricanes and take a 3-0 lead. In the final segment of the hour, Gio has an old time bathing suit to jump in the ocean during the show on Friday. Today is going to be Al Dukes day at Colonia Middle School. Gio used to have 50's day at Middle School lunch. A caller said there was a shark attack in Cape May last weekend.
Hour 2 The Lakers were eliminated and LeBron made it seem like he's thinking about retiring. LeBron seems to want Kyrie Irving on the Lakers. Mark Cuban talked about wanting to keep Kyrie. Jerry thinks it could work in L.A. with LeBron and Kyrie. We talked about the Heat dominating the Celtics and how good they've been in the playoffs. A caller said no way LeBron is retiring without a farewell tour season. C-Lo returns for an update and starts with a preview of Mets/Cubs and Orioles/Yankees. A bird got hit by a ball in Cleveland last night and died. We got into a discussion about the move, Major League. The Nuggets are going to the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history. C-Lo has audio from the postgame press conferences. Gio said Boomer slurps his oatmeal. Charles Barkley said the Celtics were not well coached and just layed down. In the final segment of the hour, the Dodgers re-invite the ‘Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence' to Pride Night. Gio said whoever complains the most, gets their way. Jerry wonders why baseball has to have special nights for various groups. Gio called it the ‘Pendulum of pissed off people'.
Hour 4 The Mets are in Chicago to play the Cubs starting tonight and the Orioles come to the Bronx. Who will the Yankees lose to in the playoffs this season? Jerry asks, who scares you as a Yankees fan? Who is more likely to lead their league in HRs, Pete Alonso or Aaron Judge? C-Lo returns for his final update of the morning and starts with a preview of Mets/Cubs and Orioles/Yankees. The Nuggets complete the sweep of the Lakers and head to the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history. LeBron has a lot to think about when it comes to his future in basketball. The Panthers beat the Hurricanes to go up 3-0 in the series. Aaron Rodgers will be at the start of OTAs which will be open to the media. In the final segment of the show, Giusy Maloni is on YES right now doing some sort of soccer show and Gio said she should be hosting the Today Show. There is a lifeguard shortage across the country including NJ and Long Island. Gio thinks everybody wants to be a social media star and they don't want regular jobs like lifeguard.
NBA & NHL Playoffs have been unpredictable so far... does that mean a Lakers comeback is imminent? Probably not. However, it seems like everyone and their grandmas think the Celtics will comeback in their series vs the Heat. Who knows anymore. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jack-settleman/support

The second round of the NHL Playoffs is underway and Patrick and Seth do their best to mentally recover from the early poor start of the Leafs and Devils. Can Toronto battle back from being cup favorites to the longest shot left on the board? And in the West, the Oilers have come out firing to take both the series and the overall Stanley Cup odds by force. Can McDavid and Draisatl bring Lord Stanley back to Edmonton for the first time since Gretzky and Kurri? In the NBA the West is as wide open as it gets with the fashionably late Lakers and Warriors rounding into form at the right time and the Suns and Nuggets continuing their consistent yearlong play. And in the East can Jimmy Butler and Coach Spoelstra's Heat keep shocking the oddsmakers? Is it Boston's conference to lose?
