Calvary Chapel McKinney Pastor James Marini teaches a weekly verse by verse Bible study in McKinney, TX.
Second Samuel 17 Take Aways:1. God prevented David from being destroyed by empowering Hushai to defeat the strategies of the enemy, and we can trust that the Lord will continually intercede to prevent His people from being trampled by the enemy, Satan—“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” 1 John 4:42. The Lord provided protection for those young priests who sought to faithfully serve their king in this dangerous war; similarly, the Lord will provide us the protection we need in the spiritual battle we fight as servants of King Jesus—“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Ephesians 6:10-113. As the Lord preserved David in the wilderness through unexpected means, so God is faithful to provide for every need we may encounter in this life—“And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19
Take Aways for 2 Corinthians 91. Paul urged the Corinthians to follow through with their promised gift, and we, as fellow believers, should be a people committed to fulfilling that which the Lord has laid on our hearts—“And in this I give advice: It is to your advantage not only to be doing what you began and were desiring to do a year ago; but now you also must complete the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to desire it, so there also may be a completion out of what you have.” 2 Corinthians 8:10-11 2. As Paul encouraged the Corinthians to be willing, generous, and cheerful givers, we should aim to do the same, knowing that giving bountifully as the Holy Spirit leads will enrich us, support the needs of ministry, edify others, and glorify God—“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him…and whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men,” Colossians 3:17, 23
Second Samuel 16 Take Aways:1. While the craftiness of Ziba allowed him to temporarily steal away the inheritance of Mephibosheth, his slanderous conduct will later be addressed with consequences reminding us that deceptive behavior will eventually be exposed and judged accordingly—“For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.” Ecclesiastes 12:142. Though Shimei wrongly cursed David, the king did not revile in return but instead trusted the Lord God to defend and avenge him; may we strive to demonstrate such patient meekness in similar situations—1 Peter 2:23 considers the conduct of Jesus saying “when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously”3. Absalom accepted wicked counsel and willingly established his kingdom upon immorality which will never generate a blessed legacy reminding us of the importance of seeking godly wisdom and abiding in righteousness—“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night.” Psalm 1:1-2
Study Take Aways: 1. As Paul was able to celebrate the Macedonian church as an example of generous charity, may we too be a church that glorifies God in willfully giving, with liberality, as we are able and are led by the Lord—“So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:72. Remembering Jesus' commitment to wholly sacrificing Himself in complete submission to the Father's will to bring salvation to sinful humanity, may we follow His example in selflessly committing all that we possess to honor God—“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.” Romans 12:13. Paul explained that the act of giving would serve to demonstrate the love that the Corinthians had for their fellow brethren, reminding us that sincere love is expressed not merely by words but also through action—"My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth." 1 John 3:18
Calvary Chapel McKinney Pastor James Marini continues a Bible study series through 2 Samuel. This week's verse by verse study is 2 Samuel chapter 15. From Sunday, May 11th, 2025.Take Aways:1. Absalom deceitfully projected false humility, but in reality, his intense pride compelled him to promote himself as the hero of Israel while sowing seeds of dissension with selfish motives and we must guard our hearts against similar temptation—“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.” Philippians 2:32. David was blessed to be surrounded by loyal friends who willingly supported him in the midst of his trial; may we be faithful friends who encourage others in their time of need—“A man who has friends must himself be friendly, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Prov. 18:243. David had a sincere trust in the Lord that allowed him to be able to worship even in the trial believing that God was still in control and worthy of His praise; we too should be able to glorify the Lord with the same confidence regardless of our circumstances—“Though the fig tree may not blossom, Nor fruit be on the vines; Though the labor of the olive may fail, And the fields yield no food; Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, And there be no herd in the stalls—Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.”Habakkuk 3:17-18
Calvary Chapel McKinney Pastor James Marini continues a Bible study series through 2 Samuel. This week's verse by verse study is 2 Samuel 13:1-39. From Sunday, April 27th, 2025.Take Aways:1. Joab's use of a parable to address an unresolved, problematic issue in David's life and move him toward reconciliation proved effective, reminding us of the importance of being willing to both give and receive timely rebukes—“Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.” Galatians 6:12. As the woman from Tekoa petitioned David to urgently seek reconciliation in the name of mercy and grace, so we should set our hearts and minds to the ministry of reconciliation in our personal relationships—"Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” Psalm 133:13. Though the prodigal Absalom returned to his father and king, it was with false submission and feigned reverence ultimately proven insincere by his conduct; may we return to God the Father and respond to our Lord King Jesus with genuine repentance—“For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.” 2 Corinthians 7:10
Calvary Chapel McKinney Pastor James Marini continues a Bible study series through 2 Samuel. This week's verse by verse study is 2 Samuel 13:1-39. From Sunday, April 27th, 2025.Take Aways:1. As Amnon's unchecked lust eventually produced horrific violation that radically harmed others and ultimately cost him his life, so our sinful passions will lead to dreadful sins that we never imagined being involved with if left unchecked—“Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” 2 Timothy 2:222. Though Absalom believed taking vengeance into his own hands would lead to healing, it actually generated further pain and suffering for everyone involved, reminding us to trust the Lord to execute righteous vengeance—“Be strong, do not fear! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God; He will come and save you.” Isaiah 35:43. While Absalom rightly recognized that his slaying of Amnon was an unlawful act, he responded poorly by fleeing from the king in rebellion rather than humbly repenting and returning to his father who loved him—“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart— These, O God, You will not despise.” Psalm 51:17
Take Aways:1. Paul identified the evidence, means, responses, and perseverance of those who are true ambassadors of God that the Corinthians might realize the legitimacy of his ministry; we too must recognize these attributes and strive to walk accordingly as faithful fellow workers of God—“Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.” 1 Corinthians 4:1-22. As Paul identified the Corinthians as the temple of God and subsequently charged them to be cleansed in Christ by pursuing holiness, we too are called to be washed in Christ by walking in purity—Titus 2:14 declares Jesus “gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.”
Pastor James Leads a special message in Luke 24:13-49 for Resurrection Sunday. 1. As these two disciples logically reasoned through the eyewitness reports of the empty tomb, they received clarity from the Lord Jesus through the Scriptures, and we too will gain understanding from the Lord as we sincerely contemplate the Word of God with genuine humility—“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” Matthew 7:7-82. The two disciples recognized Jesus for who He is after partaking in intimate communion with the Lord which reminds us of the need to have daily fellowship with Christ, as it will help us grow us deeper in knowing Him—John declares in 1 John 1:3 “that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.”3. Though Jesus revealed Himself physically to His disciples by inviting them to handle His resurrected body, we will know Jesus as our resurrected Lord and Savior by embracing the Word of God, through which He gives us understanding by the power of the Holy Spirit—“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.” 1 Corinthians 2:12
Pastor James leads a special Good Friday Message | Luke23:26-49 | 4/18/25
HOLY WEEK | HOLY WEDNESDAY Pastor James teaches a special message in Luke 20:20-44. From 4-16-25Message Take Aways1. When the religious leaders attempted to trap Jesus with a question of politics and religion, Jesus wisely answered them to “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” which in turn charges us to strive to honor the Lord both as stewards in this world and as citizens of heaven—“Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.” Romans 13:72. While the Sadducees attempted to disprove the resurrection, Jesus revealed that they had failed to align their theology with the Scriptures as the Word of God continually declares the promise of a resurrection to come—“We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 5:83. Jesus challenged the Pharisees to consider David's reverence toward his promised physical descendant so they might recognize the submission due to the Son of David as He is also the Son of God and we too must revere Jesus as Messiah and honor Him as God the Son—Thomas rightly professed of Jesus in John 10:28 “My Lord and my God!”
Pastor James leads a special Palm Sunday Message on The Triumphal Entry of Jesus from Luke 19:28-40.Take Aways:1. As Jesus' disciples were blessed by their faithful obedience to perform His commission while trusting in His Word, so we will be blessed as we submit ourselves to the Word of God and fulfill His Great Commission—“Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” Mk. 16:152. After observing two differing responses to the Triumphal Entry of Jesus, we must carefully consider our response to His claim of being the Promised King: Do you celebrate Jesus as King unto blessedness or criticize Him as an imposter unto condemnation?—“Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 10:32-33 3. Even as Jesus cleansed the temple of sinful compromise to restore it to its intended purpose, so the Lord Jesus desires to purify our hearts and restore us to know true and sincere communion with God for which we were created—“And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” John 17:3
Calvary Chapel McKinney Pastor James Marini continues a midweek Bible study series through 2 Corinthians. This week's verse by verse study is 2 Corinthians 5. From Wednesday, April 9th, 2025.2 Corinthians 5 Take Aways1. As Paul lived his life looking forward to a resurrection in eternity with assurance, we too should be heavenly minded, knowing that our hope will be fulfilled in eternity as we trust in the completed work of Christ—“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.” Philippians 3:20-212. As Paul explained and Jesus affirmed, a rewards judgment lies ahead for all men, which in turn should motivate us to live with a heart and mind that is set on pleasing the Lord Jesus—Hebrews 12:28 “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear."3. Since Christ died to bring reconciliation between God and humanity, we are to be zealous ambassadors who live to preach the Gospel of reconciliation to all men—“Christ gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.” Titus 2:13
Calvary Chapel McKinney Pastor James Marini leads a special message on Psalm 51. From Sunday, April 6th, 2025.Message Take Aways:1. As David wisely acknowledged his sin with a guilty plea, so we must recognize our sin before God and accept our need for a Savior—“This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.” 1 Timothy 1:152. Once David confessed his sin, he was able to confidently petition the Lord for restoration knowing the merciful character of God; we who trust in Jesus Christ have access to come boldly before the throne of God to request His gracious provision in all things—“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:163. Just as David responded to God's forgiveness by pledging his life and kingdom to glorify the Lord, so we too are called to respond to our salvation in Christ with willful submission that glorifies God in all things—“you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 2:5
Calvary Chapel McKinney Pastor James Marini continues a Bible study series through 2 Samuel. This week's verse by verse study is 2 Samuel 12:1-31. From Sunday, March 30th, 2025.Message Take Aways:1. As Nathan came and rebuked King David for his seemingly hidden sin, so God sees our sins and will deal with them accordingly—Jesus said in Mark 4:22 “For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light.”2. David wisely recognized and repented of his sin reminding us of the need to acknowledge and confess our sins with urgency and sincerity—Proverbs 28:13 “He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.”3. Just as David experienced restoration and victory in the Lord after he had repented of his sin, we too will know great blessing as we receive the mercies of our Lord—“keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.” Jude 1:21
