Day 2926 – Theology Thursday – Biblical Leadership: A Study in Character, Consequence, and Integrity Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2926 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps!   I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2921 of our Trek.   The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Our current series of Theology Thursday lessons is written by theologian and teacher John Daniels. I have found that his lessons are short, easy to understand, doctrinally sound, and applicable to all who desire to learn more of God's Word. John's lessons can be found on his website, theologyinfive.com.   Biblical Leadership: A Study in Character, Consequence, and Integrity. Leadership in Scripture is never measured by charisma, military strength, or political skill. The biblical authors consistently judge leaders by their faithfulness, humility, and devotion to justice. The accounts of kings and rulers throughout the Bible reveal both the blessings that follow righteous leadership and the judgment that falls on those who abuse authority. These stories span Israel, Egypt, Assyria, and Babylon, showing that Yahweh holds all nations and rulers accountable, not only His covenant people. The first segment is: Pharaoh of Egypt: Pride That Brought a Nation to Ruin. The Pharaoh encountered in the Exodus account held absolute power within Egypt. His refusal to release Israel revealed a heart resistant to the authority of Yahweh. Even as the plagues displayed divine judgment, Pharaoh's pride pushed him toward decisions that harmed his people and devastated his land. His story is an enduring illustration of how leaders who elevate their own authority above truth bring suffering upon themselves and those they rule. The second segment is: King Saul: A Leader Consumed by Jealousy. Saul began his reign with promise, but his insecurity grew once David rose to prominence. Rather than celebrate Yahweh's deliverance through David, Saul viewed him as a rival. His jealousy hardened into paranoia, which shaped his leadership and led him to focus on David instead of protecting Israel. Saul's downward spiral demonstrates how internal corruption eventually reshapes every part of a leader's public role. His tragic end stands as a warning about the destructive nature of envy and fear. The third segment is: King David: A Leader After God's Heart Who Still Faced Judgment. David is remembered for his devotion to Yahweh and his role in unifying Israel. He displayed courage, integrity, and a shepherd's heart. His failures, however, reveal that even great leaders are not exempt from judgment. His sin with Bathsheba and his involvement in Uriah's death led to personal and national consequences. David's repentance and willingness to return to Yahweh show the humility that sets righteous leaders apart, even when they falter. The fourth segment is: King Solomon: Wisdom, Prosperity, and the Danger of Compromise. Solomon's early reign reflected wisdom and devotion. His construction of the temple and his administration brought peace and prosperity. Over time, his alliances and accommodation of foreign worship drew his heart away from Yahweh. The resulting spiritual compromise planted seeds that eventually fractured the kingdom. Solomon's life illustrates how gifted leaders fail when they drift from faithfulness. The fifth segment is: King Ahab: Greed and the Abuse of Authority. Ahab represents the danger of a leader who lacks moral grounding. His coveting of Naboth's vineyard and his willingness to accept Jezebel's deadly scheme expose a pattern of selfishness and corruption. Ahab used his authority to secure his own desires without regard for justice. The consequences that followed highlight the seriousness of exploiting power for personal gain and ignoring the responsibilities of righteous leadership. The sixth segment is: Sennacherib of Assyria: Blasphemy and the Fall of an Empire's Pride. Sennacherib's reign represented the height of Assyrian power. His campaigns were marked by cruelty and the oppression of surrounding nations. When he threatened Jerusalem and mocked Yahweh, he crossed the line from political aggression to spiritual defiance. Scripture records that Yahweh struck down his forces in a single night, showing that no king, no matter how powerful, can stand against the God of Israel. Sennacherib's fate reveals the limits of human power and the certainty of divine judgment on arrogant rulers. The seventh segment is: Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon: Pride Confronted by Divine Sovereignty. Nebuchadnezzar ruled one of the most powerful empires of the ancient world. His military victories and monumental building projects fostered a sense of self-exaltation. He demanded worship of the golden statue and boasted about his achievements without acknowledging Yahweh. His temporary downfall, recorded in Daniel, reveals how Yahweh humbles rulers who place themselves at the center of their own glory. Nebuchadnezzar's eventual repentance shows that Yahweh seeks restoration rather than destruction, even for pagan kings. The eighth segment is: Belshazzar of Babylon: Arrogance Without Repentance. Belshazzar provides a stark contrast to Nebuchadnezzar. During his infamous feast, he mocked Yahweh by drinking from the sacred vessels taken from the Jerusalem temple. His actions demonstrated reckless arrogance and spiritual blindness. Unlike Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar showed no humility or willingness to learn from past judgment. His rule ended immediately after Yahweh declared his kingdom weighed and found wanting. Belshazzar's story highlights the danger of leaders who dismiss warnings and treat sacred things with contempt. The ninth segment is: Religious Leaders in the Time of Jesus: Failing to Shepherd God's People. The Pharisees and Sadducees held positions of spiritual authority but often used their influence to elevate themselves rather than guide the people faithfully. Their fixation on outward observance blinded them to the heart of the Law. Jesus confronted their hypocrisy and exposed their failure to shepherd the people entrusted to them. Their example reminds readers that leadership becomes corrupt when it seeks reputation rather than responsibility. In Conclusion The biblical accounts of kings and rulers create a consistent moral vision of leadership. The stories of Pharaoh, Saul, David, Solomon, Ahab, Sennacherib, Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar, and the religious leaders of Jesus' day show that authority is a trust given by Yahweh, not a tool for personal elevation. Leaders who walk in humility and justice create space for flourishing. Leaders who embrace pride, greed, or cruelty bring destruction on themselves and those under their care. Scripture reveals Yahweh as the one who judges unrighteous rule but also restores those who turn toward Him. True leadership reflects wisdom, integrity, and a heart aligned with His purposes. This message from Pastor Paul walks through 1 Kings 20 and 21, tracing King Ahab's story as a picture of God's patience with people who don't deserve it. Even after Ahab let Israel drift into idolatry under his wife Jezebel's influence, God still gave him victory over an invading army and made sure he knew it was the Lord who did it. The passage also covers the murder of Nabbath, whose vineyard Ahab and Jezebel schemed to steal, showing how unchecked sin in a household spreads and hurts other people. What stands out is how God responds once Ahab finally humbles himself: not with excuses accepted, but with real mercy offered to someone who confesses honestly.

“How precious is your unfailing love, O God! All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings.” (Psalm 36:7 NLT) First Kings 18 tells the story of the prophet Elijah’s epic showdown with the prophets of Baal and Asherah. But before that decisive contest occurs in the chapter, we find a brief encounter between two of God’s servants that illustrates what real, difference-making servanthood looks like. The chapter begins with these words: “Later on, in the third year of the drought, the Lord said to Elijah, ‘Go and present yourself to King Ahab. Tell him that I will soon send rain!’ So Elijah went to appear before Ahab” (1 Kings 18:1–2 NLT). Ahab and his wife Jezebel were two of the evilest characters in Israel’s history. Not only did they oppose the God of Israel, but they also ordered the execution of His prophets. And Elijah was at the top of their hit list. Even so, when God told Elijah to confront Ahab, the prophet didn’t hesitate to obey. On his way to find Ahab, Elijah encountered Obadiah, “a devoted follower of the Lord” (verse 3 NLT), who was also in charge of Ahab’s palace. Obadiah had remained faithful to God in a difficult and dangerous environment. In fact, when Jezebel sought to kill the Lord’s prophets, Obadiah hid one hundred of them in caves and supplied them with food and water (see verses 3–4). His actions required courage and helped preserve the lives of God’s servants. Yet Obadiah and Elijah represent two different ways of serving God during a time of spiritual crisis. Obadiah faithfully served the Lord from within Ahab’s administration, while Elijah openly confronted the king and called the nation back to God. Both men were devoted to the Lord, but Elijah's assignment required a public stand. As believers, there are times when our faith is expressed through quiet faithfulness and courageous service behind the scenes. But there are also moments when God calls us to speak openly and stand firmly for what is right. If we remain silent when He calls us to speak, others may mistake our silence for approval. Look again at how Elijah instantly obeyed and firmly declared God's will. We need the courage of Elijah, who stood openly and boldly for the Lord. It is possible to believe quietly, as Obadiah did, but there are moments when God calls His people to speak and stand without compromise. Elijah realized that he stood in the presence of the most powerful King of all: God Himself. Elijah understood what David, the writer of Psalm 36, meant when he wrote, “How precious is your unfailing love, O God! All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings” (verse 7 NLT). Have you ever tried to stand in someone’s shadow? You must stay very close to the person. If they move, you must mirror their actions. Elijah stood in the shadow of God no matter where he was. Sometimes we forget that. We think that when we leave church, we somehow leave God’s presence. The truth is, wherever we go, God is with us. When we stand in the presence of God, we will not bow before any person. Proverbs 28:1 says, “The godly are as bold as lions” (NLT). There is no room for spiritual compromise in the lives of God’s people. Reflection question: What would a refusal to compromise, spiritually speaking, look like in your life? When you want to see action, the last thing that makes logical sense is to stop, relax, and wait. And yet Psalm 46:10 calls us to do exactly that — and frames it not as passivity, but as one of the most powerful postures available to a believer. The Hebrew word translated "be still" is rāp̄â, meaning to cease or relax. What follows that stillness is yāḏa — to know, to receive revelation and understanding. The command is not simply to stop moving. It is to stop moving so that we can be in the right posture to hear from God and let Him be God. Elijah had witnessed some of the most remarkable miracles recorded in Scripture. He had seen fire fall from heaven and outrun a chariot. And then one threatening message from Jezebel sent him fleeing in terror to the wilderness. But even in his fear, Elijah waited. When God told him to stand on the mountain, Elijah stood while hurricane-force winds tore through, while an earthquake shook the ground, while fire blazed — and still he waited. The word of the Lord came at last not in the spectacle, but in a gentle whisper. The instruction for what to do next arrived only after the stillness was sustained through the noise. Whatever complication or insurmountably difficult circumstance you are facing today, the same invitation is extended: cease striving, relax your grip, and wait upon the Lord. He can be trusted. He knows the way forward, and He will speak — in His timing, in His way, with everything you need for the days ahead. Today's Bible Verse "Be still and know that I am God!"— Psalm 46:10, NLT Ponder Today Stillness is an active and powerful posture, not a passive one. Ceasing our striving and relaxing our grip creates the conditions for God to do what He desires in us and through us. Being still before the Lord is itself a form of faith in action. Revelation follows the posture of an open and expectant heart. The Hebrew yāḏa — to know and receive understanding — requires that we position ourselves to receive it. We cannot hear from God when we are too busy reacting to the noise around us. Elijah waited through wind, earthquake, and fire before the whisper came. The word of the Lord did not arrive in the spectacular. It came in the gentle whisper after sustained stillness through prolonged noise. Waiting through the loud is often how we reach the quiet where God speaks. God may move you to act, to step aside, or to receive wisdom — but you must be still first to know which. Reacting out of anxiety before hearing from God leads us in the wrong direction. Stillness positions us to receive the specific instruction we actually need. Let stillness become a place you return to from desire, not just desperation. The greatest relief, retreat, and refuge available to a believer is God's presence. May it become a place we seek not only when life is hard, but because we genuinely want to know Him and spend time with Him. A Prayer for You Today Father God, we pray today for the person who struggles to be still in Your presence — whether stirred by anxiety, restless for action, or simply unfamiliar with slowing down. Please meet them where they need Your touch of peace. Still them, comfort them, and make them ready to hear what You have to say next. May they find that Your presence is the greatest relief, retreat, and refuge there is. May stillness become not a place they run to only when life is hard, but a place they genuinely desire because they want to know You and be close to You. As they quiet themselves before Your Spirit, may they be met in perfect timing with all that is needed for this day and the days to come. May trust be fortified and hope renewed as they allow You to guide, keep, and teach them. In Jesus' name, Amen. In our last episode, the military commander, Jehu, was anointed as king. He and his men set out immediately to put an end to the house of Ahab, and in the process, he also killed the king of Judah, the evil king Ahaziah. Today, Jehu continues his conquest with a number of cunning strategies, killing Ahab's wife Jezebel, overthrowing the house of Ahab, destroying the prophets of a Baal, and avenging the blood of Naboth the Gileadite on behalf of the Lord. Remember that the Lord predicted Ahab's fall through Elijah, who has since been taken up into glory. This teaching from Pastor Elliot walks through 1 Kings 16 and 17, tracing Israel's kings from Baasha through Ahab and Jezebel while introducing the prophet Elijah. As each king turns further toward idol worship, the nation experiences the covenant curse of drought, just as God had warned centuries earlier through Moses. But even in judgment, God is working to draw his people back to himself. Elijah's time by the brook, his stay with the widow of Zarephath, and the raising of her son all show a God who provides daily bread, hears prayer, and holds power over life and death. Through famine and loss, the true character of God comes into focus as merciful, faithful, and utterly reliable, even when the surrounding culture worships gods who cannot deliver on a single promise.

Are you in a tough place right now? I want to encourage you to know God will never let go of you. When we are born from above, the Bible teaches us nothing can separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. God won't let go of you! Think of Elijah. You remember the story found in 1 Kings 18, where Elijah challenged all the prophets of Baal, with great courage, and their pagan gods could not deliver them. Elijah triumphed over all that evil, proving Jehovah God was the only true God. It was an incredible victory. But the very next day, brave Elijah becomes a coward, fearful of one woman, Jezebel, who has threatened to kill him. And he starts running for his life. Elijah no doubt would have been diagnosed today as having a deep depression, even as being deluded, as he ran for his life. But God didn't let go, and with great patience and kindness, he nurtured him back to strength, taught him some wonderful lessons, and brought him out of that deep funk an even better man of God. Are you there today? Has your faith failed you; are you full of fear? Are you in that kind of deep depression where everything looks hopeless, you feel worthless, and you're sure life is coming to an end—at least life with any meaning? I want to encourage you today to know God won't let go of you. He will patiently guide you back to wholeness, as he did with Elijah. How did Elijah recover? He needed some rest and some nourishment, first of all. When you are physically depleted, it will affect you spiritually and emotionally. So, God put him in quiet place for some rest and nourishment. Then he reminded Elijah of who God is, he helped him get beyond the pity party he was having, and then he sent Elisha to be his companion and coworker. God never let go of Elijah, and if you are his child, he will not let go of you. David wrote: For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock (Psalm 27:5).

Senator Jon Ossoff's speech at Berean Christian Church uses the biblical story of King Ahab, Jezebel, Naboth's vineyard, and the prophet Micaiah to confront corruption, political power, and the danger of surrounding a ruler with people willing to lie for him. I examine why Ossoff's argument about the rule of law, false prophets, voting rights, and reckless war carries such theological weight. The episode considers how Scripture can challenge authoritarianism rather than excuse it—and why the story of Ahab remains a warning about corruption, political sycophants, leaders who silence dissent, and the abuse of religious authority.

In our last episode, Ahab struck a deal with Ben-Hadad, the king of Aram instead of destroying him, but because the Lord had set him apart for destruction, an unnamed prophet pronounced judgment on Ahab. Some time passes, and Ahab sets his sights on a field that belongs to another man. After he refuses to sell it, Ahab pouts in his room until Jezebel hatches a scheme to murder him and take his land. Elijah appears to prophecy his demise, and remarkably, Ahab responds with humility. After experiencing the power and authority of the God of Israel on top of Mount Carmel, where fire fell from heaven to consume Elijah's sacrifice, the prophet runs to Jezreel ahead of King Ahab. Upon hearing Jezebel's threats to execute him, Elijah then flees in despair to a distant mountaintop. Later, King Ahab of Israel goes to battle with Ben-Hadad of Aram. The Lord sends an unnamed prophet to alert Ahab that the Lord will win the battle for Israel so that Ahab will know that He alone is God over the whole earth. Since I covered up the abuse, no one believes me. I was even told in a church that I had a Jezebel spirit. How do I deal with this pain and begin healing? I'm a long-time listener, and my husband went to Every Man's Battle a few months ago. He returned a hopeful man. My heart is full, and I want to thank you! My dad passed away, and my stepmom took in my 22-year-old nephew who has bipolar disorder and was using drugs. I'm now caring for my stepmom as she gets older, and I told my nephew his pregnant girlfriend couldn’t move in. If my stepmom lets him move back in, I’m afraid for my safety. He's very angry, and my stepmom says he might hurt me. To your previous caller, my brother has bipolar disorder and has been violent. He has housing. If the caller goes to the Department of Social Services, he might be able to receive benefits.

Elijah had just called down fire from heaven. He had outrun a chariot. He had watched God show up in one of the most dramatic displays of power recorded in all of Scripture. And then, just a few verses later, he was sitting under a broom bush in the wilderness, asking God to let him die. One threatening message from Jezebel was his tipping point. The man who had witnessed the impossible had nothing left to say — and he said it anyway. That is the picture this episode sits with: the prayer that comes from the end of yourself, when the words won't form, when nothing lines up, when the most honest thing you can bring to God is simply the wreckage of what remains. When the news of a daughter's rare terminal diagnosis arrived and the words inside simply would not form into anything orderly, what slowly became clear was the truth of Romans 8:26 — the Spirit helps us in our weakness. He intercedes with groans that words cannot express. He fills the silence we bring. God did not rebuke Elijah for his broom bush prayer. He sent food, rest, and a gentle question: what are you doing here? He asks us the same thing today, not because He doesn't know, but because sometimes we need to say it out loud. If prayer feels flat or the words have dried up completely, you are not failing. You may be standing in the most honest place you have ever stood before God. Today's Bible Verse "'I have had enough, Lord,' he said. 'Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.' Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep."— 1 Kings 19:4-5, NIV Ponder Today You do not have to have it together before God shows up. Elijah brought the wreckage of what was left, and God met him there with food, rest, and compassion — not disappointment or rebuke. He will meet you there too. The Spirit prays when you cannot. Romans 8:26 is one of Scripture's most comforting promises for the believer who has run out of words. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. Your silence is not empty before God. Honesty before God is not a failure of faith — it may be the deepest expression of it. Elijah said the most honest thing he could find. God honored that. Bringing your actual state before the Lord, unpolished and unresolved, is a form of trust. God's first response to Elijah's exhaustion was care for his physical needs. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is sleep, eat, and rest. God understands the connection between a depleted body and a depleted soul. God's question is an invitation, not an accusation. When He asks "what are you doing here?" He already knows the answer. He is giving you the gift of saying it out loud — because sometimes naming where we are is the first step back toward where we need to be. A Prayer for You Today Heavenly Father, I'll be honest. I don't know what to say to You right now. The words aren't coming, and the ones that do don't feel like enough. I'm tired in a way that is hard to explain, and prayer feels further away than it ever has. But I'm here. That's what I have today. Thank You that Your Spirit intercedes when I can't find the words. Thank You that You met Elijah under a broom bush with food and rest and a quiet question, not with disappointment. Meet me here, too. I trust that You hear what I cannot say. Leigh Batnick Plessner is the chief creative officer of Catbird. Before landing at Catbird, Plessner graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in English literature and anthropology, and she worked at various DC coffee shops and as a cocktail waitress before landing a job in the children's room at renowned DC bookstore Politics and Prose. At the bookstore, she was eventually promoted to sidelines buyer, selecting everything for the store other than books. While in this position, she had the opportunity to go to various stationery shows, which prompted her to start a stationery brand of her own called Jezebel. In 2005, she met the founder of jewelry brand Catbird, Rony Vardi, at a stationery trade show. Soon after, she started working at the brand's storefront in New York. Eventually she transitioned out of running her stationery brand and into working full-time for Catbird. She grew with the company and now holds the role of chief creative officer, where she's responsible for the visual identity of the brand, including Catbird's partnerships with talent like Clairo and Phoebe Bridgers.

The kingdom of Israel divides when Solomon's son Rehoboam refuses to reduce the burden on the northern tribes.(06:55) A brief history of the Lost Ten Tribes in the north and Judah in the south.(10:48) Jeroboam, worried that his people will turn their hearts towards the leaders in the south when they go to the temple in Jerusalem, decides to build rival sanctuaries in Dan and Bethel.(13:25) Do not take counsel from your fears or be fooled by an imitation.(19:18) A man of God warns Jeroboam against false worship, prophesying of a future day when Josiah will destroy it.(22:17) What happened to the Ark of the Covenant? Could Shishak of Egypt have taken this treasure from the Jerusalem temple?(29:13) Elijah, an embodiment of great power, is a type of many prophets. All prophets are types of Christ. (31:49) Elijah seals the heavens and is fed by a raven. He goes to Zarephath and asks a widow woman for her barrel flour and jar of oil, promising they will never become empty during the famine.(40:30) Elijah raises the widow's son from the dead. Jesus duplicates the miracles of Elijah.(43:28) Obadiah, part of Ahab's court, saves 100 prophets from Queen Jezebel and also helps Elijah.(47:29) Obadiah and Elijah's “50” can be seen as part of a bigger picture, as members of a choral arrangement that were connected to the temple and the sacred drama in many ancient cultures.(52:37) Elijah challenges the prophets of Baal to call down fire from heaven. They fail.(57:14) At times the Lord will manifest miracles to show his might and prove that he is God. The Book of Mormon is that proof for us today.(1:03:40) The famine ends and Queen Jezebel seeks the life of Elijah. In his loneliness, Elijah experiences deep sadness, believing that the prophets are dead. At times, we may feel as Elijah did. Being with the Saints and remembering the truth of the gospel message can bolster our resilience.(1:11:44) Elijah's experience with the still small voice of the Lord.(1:18:17) Ahab, king of Israel, is attacked by the Syrian army. A prophet tells Ahab that Israel will win. Ahab later desires the vineyard of Naboth, who refuses to sell his land. Jezebel, Ahab’s wife, orchestrates a conspiracy to frame Naboth for blasphemy, and Ahab acquires the land through deceit. Elijah comes to inform Ahab that Ahab’s line will cease, that Jezebel will be eaten by dogs, and that Ahab’s blood will be licked up by dogs in the very spot where Naboth was killed. Today we read about Elijah's discouragement after fleeing from Jezebel, and how God tells him to "arise and eat" to strengthen him for the journey ahead. Fr. Mike points out how God calls us to draw strength for the journey as well, even at the end of our earthly lives. The readings are 1 Kings 19-20, 2 Chronicles 20, and Song of Solomon 6.
