We open Revelation 2:18–29 and step into Thyatira, a prosperous trade city where success often came with a price: join the guild feasts, honor the idols, keep your status, and stay comfortable. That pressure didn't just affect the marketplace. It seeped into the congregation, where a corrupting influence Scripture symbolically calls “Jezebel” pushed believers toward compromise, idolatry, and sexual immorality. We talk candidly about why Jesus praises Thyatira's love, faith, service, patience, and increasing works, and then delivers one of Revelation's strongest warnings anyway. Daily Dose of Hope July 15, 2026   Scripture: 2 Kings 11   Prayer:  Lord Jesus, We rejoice in you.  We praise your name.  You are the Alpha and the Omega, the one who was, and is, and is to come.  We cannot possibly express our gratitude in words.  You have offered us mercy but you have also given us freedom.  Thank you for that.  Help us live like free people.  Help us demonstrate your love and grace to others who cross our path.  Help us see people through your eyes.  We love you, Lord.  Amen.   Welcome back to the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional and podcast that complements the New Hope daily Bible reading plan.  This summer, we have been working our way through 1 & 2 Kings.  Today, we read 2 Kings 11.   2 Kings 11 shifts to the southern kingdom of Judah.  King Ahaziah was killed earlier by Jehu's forces. Because the royal line in Judah was devastated, Ahaziah's mother, the ruthless Athaliah (the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel), seized the opportunity to take power.  Athaliah murdered all the royal heirs of Judah to secure her reign. However, Ahaziah's sister, Jehosheba, managed to secretly rescue one of Ahaziah's infant sons, Joash (also known as Jehoash), and hide him in the Temple of the Lord for six years.   In the seventh year, one of the high priests (Jehoiada) decides it's time to take the throne back.  He forms a covenant with some of the commanders and arming them with King David's weapons which had been stored in the temple.  That's when they bring out Joash and declare him the new king.  That means he was all of seven years old.   Athaliah was killed and Jehoiada then made a covenant between the Lord and the king and people that they would be the Lord's people.  Thus, the temple of Baal was destroyed.  So this high priest cleaned up the land and ensured that one of King David's descendants remained on the throne.    Once again, we see how God keeps his promises.  For six years, it looked like David's line had been broken but through some faithful people and unusual circumstances, God protected little Joash and ensured that Judah would return to him, at least for a time.    I also love this story because it shows that individual people, like you and me, have the ability to be faithful influences.  The aunt of Joash who saved him and then the high priest Jehoiada both risked their lives to ensure God's purpose endured.  One person, no matter their status, has the ability to change the course of history.    Blessings, Pastor Vicki

In this Bible Story, Jehu is used by God to rid Israel of evil. He kills Jezebel and all the remnants of king Ahab. He also toppls the temples of Baal along with all its followers. He asks: What's the part of your life you've been hoping would be left behind, but you know you're still carrying with you today? I'm divorced from my husband, who was abusive and is a pastor. Since I covered up the abuse, no one believes me. I was even told in a church that I had a Jezebel spirit. How do I deal with this pain and begin healing? I'm a long-time listener, and my husband went to Every Man's Battle a few months ago. He returned a hopeful man. My heart is full, and I want to thank you! My dad passed away, and my stepmom took in my 22-year-old nephew who has bipolar disorder and was using drugs. I'm now caring for my stepmom as she gets older, and I told my nephew his pregnant girlfriend couldn’t move in. If my stepmom lets him move back in, I’m afraid for my safety. He's very angry, and my stepmom says he might hurt me. To your previous caller, my brother has bipolar disorder and has been violent. He has housing. If the caller goes to the Department of Social Services, he might be able to receive benefits.

Daily Dose of Hope July 13, 2026   Scripture: 2 Kings 9   Prayer:  Lord, It's easy to read about these sinful kings from long ago and think we are so much better. Forgive us, for I know we are kidding ourselves. Help us not indulge in such arrogant assumptions. Search our hearts, Lord, and cleanse us. Reveal to us how to live our lives in ways that honor you. Help us seek holiness in all we do. In Your Name, Amen.   Welcome back to the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional and podcast that complements the New Hope daily Bible reading plan.  This summer, we have been working our way through 1 & 2 Kings.  Today, we read 2 Kings 9.   When Elijah died, there were a few things that God asked him to do that were left unfinished.  Thus, it fell to Elisha to complete these tasks.  In 1 Kings 19, the word of the Lord came to Elijah, telling him to anoint Elisha to take his place as prophet of Israel (this occurs later 1 Kings 19) and anoint Hazael king over Aram.  Elisha ends up completing this in 2 Kings 8.  He was also to anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi king over Israel.  Finally, Elijah prophesies that Ahab and Jezebel will both be killed and that the lineage of Ahab will be obliterated.   In today's chapter, Elisha finishes up the given tasks.  Jehu was a commander in King Ahab's army.  Elisha instructs a younger prophet to head to Jehu's camp in Ramoth Gilead (not sure why Elisha doesn't do this himself except that he may have been noticed too easily). Once there, the prophet was to inform Jehu that he would indeed become the next king of Israel and that this would happen in order to put an end Ahab's line. The prophet announces this to the commander and then exits, leaving Jehu to figure out how this might occur.   It appears he doesn't think too long about it because he actively seeks out King Joram (in the line of Ahab) and assassinates him.  Both Israel and Judah were at war with Aram. When Jehu finds King Joram of Israel, King Ahaziah of Judah was with him. With no hesitation, Jehu kills them both with his bow.  This means that both nations are stripped of their leaders, creating a dangerous power vacuum.   At the end of the chapter, Jezebel is also killed and her body is eaten by the wild dogs, so badly marred that she could not receive a proper burial.   And it is done, the prophecy is fulfilled.   Blessings, Pastor Vicki

The church in Thyatira was loving, faithful, and growing. Jesus still had a problem with them.This is Week 4 of our Seven Letters series through Revelation. Jesus turns His gaze on Thyatira—a church doing a lot right. But their tolerance of a false teacher named Jezebel was quietly unraveling everything. A Sunday morning sermon by Pastor Brett Deal.Twenty years ago, when I was a young pastor rushing in ministry, a mentor advised me saying, “Sometimes in ministry the best thing you can do is have a nap and a snack.” I've thought about that a lot over the years. At its heart, it's a call to Sabbath, remembering God is God and we aren't. It challenges where we've abandoned His way for our own. When we serve Jesus in our own strength, we may last for a while, but it's not long before the cracks appear.Elijah's a great example of this (1 Kings 19). He genuinely felt he was the only one serving the Lord. Reading about the powerful encounter on Mount Carmel, we might think he was renewed, rejuvenated, and ready to run into his next season of ministry. In reality, he was worn out! He crashed out at Jezebel's threat. Hiding in the wilderness, the Lord let Elijah sleep and miraculously fed him. A nap and snack are a good start.The disciples are another great example (John 6). One might think after taking a few small pieces of bread and fish from Jesus' hands and marveling at their miraculous multiplication the disciples would be spiritually energized for life! In reality, they were just as susceptible to fear and perplexity as the crowd (John 6.19, 60). A miraculous meal and a night's rest are a good start, but there's greater spiritual nourishment needed.God fed His people to call them closer. He asked Elijah, “Why are you here?” (1 Kings 19.113). After scandalizing the crowd proclaiming unequivocally, “I AM the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh,”—which led to thousands abandoning Him—Jesus asked His remaining disciples: “Do you desire to leave too?” (John 6.51; 67).The Lord feeds us to bring us into a place of real conversation and revelation. During this week of Lent, quiet your heart to hear the Lord's still small voice. Maybe start by taking a nap and eating a snack, remembering you aren't God. Then answer honestly the questions the Lord asks: “Why are you here?” and “Are you following me or yourself?”

Elijah had just called down fire from heaven. He had outrun a chariot. He had watched God show up in one of the most dramatic displays of power recorded in all of Scripture. And then, just a few verses later, he was sitting under a broom bush in the wilderness, asking God to let him die. One threatening message from Jezebel was his tipping point. The man who had witnessed the impossible had nothing left to say — and he said it anyway. That is the picture this episode sits with: the prayer that comes from the end of yourself, when the words won't form, when nothing lines up, when the most honest thing you can bring to God is simply the wreckage of what remains. When the news of a daughter's rare terminal diagnosis arrived and the words inside simply would not form into anything orderly, what slowly became clear was the truth of Romans 8:26 — the Spirit helps us in our weakness. He intercedes with groans that words cannot express. He fills the silence we bring. God did not rebuke Elijah for his broom bush prayer. He sent food, rest, and a gentle question: what are you doing here? He asks us the same thing today, not because He doesn't know, but because sometimes we need to say it out loud. If prayer feels flat or the words have dried up completely, you are not failing. You may be standing in the most honest place you have ever stood before God. Today's Bible Verse "'I have had enough, Lord,' he said. 'Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.' Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep."— 1 Kings 19:4-5, NIV Ponder Today You do not have to have it together before God shows up. Elijah brought the wreckage of what was left, and God met him there with food, rest, and compassion — not disappointment or rebuke. He will meet you there too. The Spirit prays when you cannot. Romans 8:26 is one of Scripture's most comforting promises for the believer who has run out of words. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. Your silence is not empty before God. Honesty before God is not a failure of faith — it may be the deepest expression of it. Elijah said the most honest thing he could find. God honored that. Bringing your actual state before the Lord, unpolished and unresolved, is a form of trust. God's first response to Elijah's exhaustion was care for his physical needs. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is sleep, eat, and rest. God understands the connection between a depleted body and a depleted soul. God's question is an invitation, not an accusation. When He asks "what are you doing here?" He already knows the answer. He is giving you the gift of saying it out loud — because sometimes naming where we are is the first step back toward where we need to be. A Prayer for You Today Heavenly Father, I'll be honest. I don't know what to say to You right now. The words aren't coming, and the ones that do don't feel like enough. I'm tired in a way that is hard to explain, and prayer feels further away than it ever has. But I'm here. That's what I have today. Thank You that Your Spirit intercedes when I can't find the words. Thank You that You met Elijah under a broom bush with food and rest and a quiet question, not with disappointment. Meet me here, too. I trust that You hear what I cannot say. July 6, 2026Today's Reading: 1 Kings 19:11-21Daily Lectionary: Joshua 24:1-31; Judges 1:1-36; Acts 13:1-12“I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life” (1 Kings 19:10, 14) In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Elijah, wearied from forty days and forty nights of wandering toward Mount Horeb, waits in the cave for “the word of the Lord.” He waits alone, afraid for his life. If it were only Jezebel who sought to kill him, perhaps he could endure it—but it is not just the queen. It is the “people of Israel” themselves who seek his life, to take it away. If he had even one faithful prophet besides him, perhaps he could bear it—but no, he alone remains. All the rest have bowed their knees to Baal. They have forsaken God's covenant, thrown down his altars, and slain his prophets. Twice, the Lord asks Elijah a question he may already be asking himself: “What are you doing here, Elijah?” Perhaps Elijah restrains himself from asking the same in return: “What are you doing here, Lord?” And the Lord answers that unspoken cry—not in the wind, nor the earthquake, nor the fire—but in a still, small voice. A prophet in solitude, prophets in death, a covenant broken, and altars overthrown—Elijah cries into the silence and believes alone.Yet how does God answer Elijah's zealous lament? Elijah, who fears Jezebel's injustice, is given the power to anoint leaders in both church and state who will bring justice to the land. The Lord of heaven and earth, who commands wind and land and fire, commands the weary prophet to anoint two kings and one prophet. From Hazael to Jehu to Elisha, none will escape the sword. Elijah, who shrank back because of Israel's faithlessness, is welcomed into the company of seven thousand men who have not bowed their knees to Baal. God shows His love to a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His Commandments. Finally, Elijah, who mourned in lonely exile, departs and finds a faithful companion near. Elisha receives the prophet's cloak, call, and commission, and commits himself to the Lord's work. Strengthened by the presence of his God on Mount Horeb, Elijah descends to the plain to proclaim—together with Elisha—“the word of the Lord.” In the Name + of Jesus. Just like a college scholarship or a family will, you can break the rules, walk away, and forfeit what was waiting for you.Don't Be the Best Person in Hell: Jehu accomplished monumental things for the Kingdom, yet failed to give God his whole heart. One dip blessings compared to seven dip blessings. Faithfulness to God's commandments brings miracles.(48:12) Elisha refuses to accept a reward from Naaman for being healed. Gehazi secretly obtains the reward and is cursed with leprosy.(50:33) Naaman desires to take home some dirt from the place of his miraculous healing. Cultural context helps us understand why he would want to do this.(53:53) The sons of the prophets leave for more space. Elisha causes an ax to float.(56:44) Syria wages war against Israel in an effort to capture Elisha, their secret weapon. The Syrians are smitten with blindness and are led away in peace.(1:02:14) A seam in the text can be found in 2 Kings 6. Oral traditions that were written and later stitched together by editors leave evidence of their work. Israel, under siege by their enemy and experiencing a famine, is in need of a miracle. The Syrians leave their spoils behind and Elisha's promise of plentiful food is fulfilled.(1:08:40) Jezebel's death fulfills the earlier prophecy of Elijah. Leigh Batnick Plessner is the chief creative officer of Catbird. Before landing at Catbird, Plessner graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in English literature and anthropology, and she worked at various DC coffee shops and as a cocktail waitress before landing a job in the children's room at renowned DC bookstore Politics and Prose. At the bookstore, she was eventually promoted to sidelines buyer, selecting everything for the store other than books. While in this position, she had the opportunity to go to various stationery shows, which prompted her to start a stationery brand of her own called Jezebel. In 2005, she met the founder of jewelry brand Catbird, Rony Vardi, at a stationery trade show. Soon after, she started working at the brand's storefront in New York. Eventually she transitioned out of running her stationery brand and into working full-time for Catbird. She grew with the company and now holds the role of chief creative officer, where she's responsible for the visual identity of the brand, including Catbird's partnerships with talent like Clairo and Phoebe Bridgers.

Daily Dose of Hope June 29, 2026   Scripture: 1 Kings 21   Prayer:  Abba Father, We come to you today, grateful for your love and care in our lives.  Thank you for your presence and your peace.  Help us to gather our scattered thoughts and set aside distractions so we can focus on what you have for us today.  In the next few moments of silence, Lord, help me be still and know that you are God...We give you all the glory, Lord Almighty.  Amen.    Welcome back to the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional and podcast that complements the New Hope daily Bible reading plan.  This summer, we are working our way through the books of 1 and 2 Kings.  I don't know about you, but these are some hard texts to read.  The sin of the kings is unreal.  They are setting up their nations for devastation.  Today's reading is 1 Kings 21.  Up until this point, King Ahab has been evil in the sense that he turned away from God and engaged in idolatry.  Now, he is complicit in brutality as well.  When he doesn't get a nearby vineyard that he desires, he throws a tantrum and allows his wife, Jezebel, to do what she sees fit to ensure the vineyard is his.  Jezebel, with no hesitation or remorse, devises a plan to ensure that the rightful owner of the vineyard is killed.  The vineyard now belongs to King Ahab.  Not surprisingly, this angers the Lord.  God declares that the line of Ahab will be destroyed and that his wife, Jezebel, will be killed and eaten by dogs (which would be considered incredibly horrific because there could be no proper burial).   At this, we see a drastic change in Ahab. He actually shows remorse.  He puts on sackcloth and fasts; he humbles himself before the Lord.  This appears to be the first positive thing that Ahab has ever done.  God takes notice.  God decides to push back the destruction of Ahab to future generations.  You see, God always wanted to get Ahab's attention and have him turn from his evil ways.  He never wanted Ahab to be destroyed, simply transformed into a Godly king like David.  He wanted Ahab's heart to genuinely change.  God is incredibly merciful, always looking for way to redeem, always willing to give second chances.   Blessings, Pastor Vicki

The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. 17 Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops. SERMON NOTES I. The Burden of Legacy The Coca-Cola Lesson: In 1985, "New Coke" failed because customers felt betrayed by the loss of something familiar and trustworthy, even though the new flavor was "better". Defining the Mantle: To "take up the mantle" means to assume the role and responsibility of a predecessor and say, "I will carry on what they began". Succession is Hard: It is almost impossible to follow a "GOAT" (Greatest of All Time) because you are constantly compared to their legacy. II. The Pitfall of Talent: Churchill vs. Eden Winston Churchill: A legendary leader who rallied Britain against "monstrous tyranny" with bold determination and grit. Anthony Eden: A "polished diplomat" and Churchill's right-hand man who seemed perfect on paper but failed his first test (the Suez Canal crisis) and resigned in disgrace. Insight: It isn't easy to take up the mantle. III. The Source of Power: Elijah vs. Elisha Dark Days: King Ahab and Jezebel led Israel into extreme evil, murdering God's prophets and worshipping idols. Elijah's Fire: Elijah single-handedly confronted 450 prophets of Baal, and God answered with fire from heaven to prove He was the true God. The Big Truth: Elisha was called to follow this legend, but James 5:17 reminds us Elijah was "a man just like us". The power came from God's presence, not Elijah's ability. IV. Taking Up the Mantle Today The Current Call: In modern days of darkness and challenge, we are called to be the church. The First Passing: Successful legacy requires mentorship. Elijah didn't just leave; he invited Elisha to walk with him and learn from his presence for years. The Ultimate Strength: We take up the mantle by trusting the Spirit of Jesus, who conquered death and lives in us.   Discussion Questions The "Familiarity" Factor: Why do you think people react so strongly to change (like the "New Coke" example)? In your own life, when has it been difficult to let go of the "familiar" to embrace something new? The Pressure of Success: What makes it so hard to live up to a previous legacy? The "Just Like Us" Reality: James 5:17 says Elijah was "a man just like us." How does it change your view of your own faith to know that Elijah's miracles were about God's power rather than Elijah's special abilities? Practical Mentorship: The sermon mentioned a "first passing" of the mantle where Elijah gave Elisha his presence. What does it look like practically for different generations in our church to spend time together and share their walks with the Lord? The kingdom of Israel divides when Solomon's son Rehoboam refuses to reduce the burden on the northern tribes.(06:55) A brief history of the Lost Ten Tribes in the north and Judah in the south.(10:48) Jeroboam, worried that his people will turn their hearts towards the leaders in the south when they go to the temple in Jerusalem, decides to build rival sanctuaries in Dan and Bethel.(13:25) Do not take counsel from your fears or be fooled by an imitation.(19:18) A man of God warns Jeroboam against false worship, prophesying of a future day when Josiah will destroy it.(22:17) What happened to the Ark of the Covenant? Could Shishak of Egypt have taken this treasure from the Jerusalem temple?(29:13) Elijah, an embodiment of great power, is a type of many prophets. All prophets are types of Christ. (31:49) Elijah seals the heavens and is fed by a raven. He goes to Zarephath and asks a widow woman for her barrel flour and jar of oil, promising they will never become empty during the famine.(40:30) Elijah raises the widow's son from the dead. Jesus duplicates the miracles of Elijah.(43:28) Obadiah, part of Ahab's court, saves 100 prophets from Queen Jezebel and also helps Elijah.(47:29) Obadiah and Elijah's “50” can be seen as part of a bigger picture, as members of a choral arrangement that were connected to the temple and the sacred drama in many ancient cultures.(52:37) Elijah challenges the prophets of Baal to call down fire from heaven. They fail.(57:14) At times the Lord will manifest miracles to show his might and prove that he is God. The Book of Mormon is that proof for us today.(1:03:40) The famine ends and Queen Jezebel seeks the life of Elijah. In his loneliness, Elijah experiences deep sadness, believing that the prophets are dead. At times, we may feel as Elijah did. Being with the Saints and remembering the truth of the gospel message can bolster our resilience.(1:11:44) Elijah's experience with the still small voice of the Lord.(1:18:17) Ahab, king of Israel, is attacked by the Syrian army. A prophet tells Ahab that Israel will win. Ahab later desires the vineyard of Naboth, who refuses to sell his land. Jezebel, Ahab’s wife, orchestrates a conspiracy to frame Naboth for blasphemy, and Ahab acquires the land through deceit. Elijah comes to inform Ahab that Ahab’s line will cease, that Jezebel will be eaten by dogs, and that Ahab’s blood will be licked up by dogs in the very spot where Naboth was killed. That's how long Athaliah, the evil queen, reigned—a time marked by violence, heartbreak, and darkness. She took the throne through bloodshed, even murdering her own grandchildren. Her story reminds us of how deeply entrenched evil can seem, wearing the crown and calling the shots for years on end. She was a daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, a legacy of darkness, and for seven years, all must have seemed lost. But as we read in the story of Joash, we discover that things are not always as they seem and they will not always remain as they are. Hidden away, out of sight, within the quiet places of the temple, was hope—a child, a son, preserved by God's providence. God's kingdom was advancing even when no one could see it, even when hopelessness filled the air. At just the right time, Joash was revealed and crowned, the entrenched evil uprooted, and hope restored to the people. This is a picture—a compelling, even if incomplete, foreshadowing—of what God is doing not just in the pages of ancient scripture, but in our own stories. Behind the scenes, beneath the surface, God is always at work. Sometimes it feels as if evil is too strong, too established, and nothing will ever change. But the true King—God's own Son, Jesus—is waiting for the perfect moment to be revealed in power and glory. Unlike Joash, Jesus does not falter. He does not fail. He is accomplishing all that the Father has given him to do, and he will reign forever. Take hope: there is a real King alive, reigning, and even now, God's spirit is preparing hearts, overturning evil's claims, and bringing in his eternal kingdom. Hold on—don't despair when the world's headlines or your life's hardships make it seem otherwise. Trust: your king is coming. That's the good news for us. Behind the tangled mess of our circumstances, behind every "crown" that evil seems to put on, God is present. He is faithful, bringing light in the darkness and hope in the silence. Let us live with that hope. Let us wait on the Lord, trusting that at just the right time, he reveals his salvation. May today you sense—beyond what you see or feel—the steady, unstoppable advance of God's kingdom in and through you. That is my prayer for my soul today, for my family, and for you. May we hold fast to this hope, and may it change how we wait, how we watch, and how we worship. Amen. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. In today's episode, Elisha acts through messengers and servants to accomplish kingdom-altering acts. First, the king of Aram sends his servant Hazael to ask Elisha if the king will recover from his sickness. While speaking with him about the matter, Elisha sees Hazael's future, which one of terrible power and destruction. Later, Elisha sends a young prophet to anoint Jehu, an army commander, to be king over Israel. In our last episode, Ahab struck a deal with Ben-Hadad, the king of Aram instead of destroying him, but because the Lord had set him apart for destruction, an unnamed prophet pronounces judgment on Ahab. Some time passes, and Ahab sets his sights on a field that belongs to another man. After he refuses to sell it, Ahab pouts in his room until Jezebel hatches a scheme to murder him and take his land. Elijah appears to prophecy his demise, and remarkably, Ahab responds with humility.
