What if the greatest revelation Elijah received was not the fire from heaven, but the silence that came afterward? In 1 Kings 19, Elijah goes from the spectacular victory on Mount Carmel to one of the darkest moments of his life. Jezebel threatens him, Elijah flees into the wilderness, and under a desert broom bush he asks Hashem to take his life. But instead of rebuke, Heaven gives him food, rest, and time. Now the famine was severe in Samaria. 3 And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly, 4 and when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the Lord, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water.) 5 And Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the valleys. Perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, and not lose some of the animals.” 6 So they divided the land between them to pass through it. Ahab went in one direction by himself, and Obadiah went in another direction by himself. 7 And as Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him. And Obadiah recognized him and fell on his face and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?” 8 And he answered him, “It is I. Full Text of Readings Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 130 The Saint of the day is Saint John Chrysostom Saint John Chrysostom's Story The ambiguity and intrigue surrounding John, the great preacher (his name means “golden-mouthed”) from Antioch, are characteristic of the life of any great man in a capital city. Brought to Constantinople after a dozen years of priestly service in Syria, John found himself the reluctant victim of an imperial ruse to make him bishop in the greatest city of the empire. Ascetic, unimposing but dignified, and troubled by stomach ailments from his desert days as a monk, Saint John Chrysostom became a bishop under the cloud of imperial politics. If his body was weak, his tongue was powerful. The content of his sermons, his exegesis of Scripture, were never without a point. Sometimes the point stung the high and mighty. Some sermons lasted up to two hours. His lifestyle at the imperial court was not appreciated by many courtiers. He offered a modest table to episcopal sycophants hanging around for imperial and ecclesiastical favors. John deplored the court protocol that accorded him precedence before the highest state officials. He would not be a kept man. His zeal led him to decisive action. Bishops who bribed their way into office were deposed. Many of his sermons called for concrete steps to share wealth with the poor. The rich did not appreciate hearing from Saint John Chrysostom that private property existed because of Adam's fall from grace any more than married men liked to hear that they were bound to marital fidelity just as much as their wives were. When it came to justice and charity, John acknowledged no double standards. Aloof, energetic, outspoken, especially when he became excited in the pulpit, Saint John Chrysostom was a sure target for criticism and personal trouble. He was accused of gorging himself secretly on rich wines and fine foods. His faithfulness as spiritual director to the rich widow, Olympia, provoked much gossip attempting to prove him a hypocrite where wealth and chastity were concerned. His actions taken against unworthy bishops in Asia Minor were viewed by other ecclesiastics as a greedy, uncanonical extension of his authority. Theophilus, archbishop of Alexandria, and Empress Eudoxia were determined to discredit John. Theophilus feared the growth in importance of the Bishop of Constantinople and took occasion to charge John with fostering heresy. Theophilus and other angered bishops were supported by Eudoxia. The empress resented his sermons contrasting gospel values with the excesses of imperial court life. Whether intended or not, sermons mentioning the lurid Jezebel and impious Herodias were associated with the empress, who finally did manage to have John exiled. He died in exile in 407. Reflection Saint John Chrysostom's preaching, by word and example, exemplifies the role of the prophet to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable. For his honesty and courage, he paid the price of a turbulent ministry as bishop, personal vilification, and exile.Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Psalm 30:6 says, “And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved.” David discovered something that many of us eventually discover: sometimes our greatest confidence can come immediately before our greatest testing. In this episode, we look at several people in Scripture who experienced tremendous moments of faith and courage, only to find themselves struggling when the trial came. Peter boldly declared that he would never deny Jesus. But when the pressure came, Peter denied Him three times. Elijah stood courageously on Mount Carmel, confronted hundreds of false prophets, and watched God answer his prayer with fire from heaven. Yet shortly afterward, when Jezebel threatened his life, Elijah ran into the wilderness and asked God to take his life. But then we look at Job. Job lost his possessions, his children, and his health. His circumstances could hardly have been worse. Yet despite his tremendous suffering, Job continued to recognize God's sovereignty. The lesson isn't that God's people will never become discouraged, afraid, or overwhelmed. The lesson is that our confidence must never rest in our circumstances, our past victories, or even our own strength. Our confidence must rest in God.

Pastor Brent Knox joins to break down the letter to the church in Thyatira.

In Part 8 of the Revelation Unraveled series, Pastor Byron Chesney examines Christ's message to the church at Thyatira in Revelation 2:18–29. Although this church was commended for its works, charity, service, faith, patience, and increasing ministry, it had tolerated the doctrine and influence of "Jezebel," a false teacher who was leading Christ's servants into idolatry, immorality, and compromise with the surrounding culture. This message warns that good works do not excuse false doctrine, reminds us that Christ searches the hearts and knows what His church tolerates, and calls believers to repent of sin, reject corrupt teaching, and hold fast to the truth until He comes.

Monday, 7 September 2026   Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. Matthew 22:29   “Answering, also, the ‘Jesus', He said to them, ‘You roam, not having known the Scriptures nor the ‘power, the God'.'” (CG)   In the previous verse, the Sadducees asked Jesus which of the seven the woman would be united to in the resurrection. In response, Matthew records, “Answering, also, the ‘Jesus', He said to them, ‘You roam.'”   It is a word already seen a few times in Matthew 18, planaó. It signifies to roam, as if going astray or deviating from the proper path. The word is where our word planet is derived from. This is because planets, unlike stars which appear fixed, roam among the sky. They will even seem to roam off course at times, going into retrograde.   These men's thoughts, and thus their doctrine, had deviated from the sound path. The reason for this is next stated by Jesus, saying, “not having known the Scriptures.”   It is the same thing that plagues the world today. Jews, no matter how diligently they study Scripture, roam because they are looking at it from the wrong paradigm. They think the word is about them. It is true, Israel is included in the word in a significant way, but the word is not about them. It is about Jesus.   Christians fail to properly evaluate Scripture, inserting presuppositions, biases, agendas, etc., into their reading and teaching of the word. The prosperity gospel, for example, is not found in a proper handling of the word, and yet it permeates churches from the US to Africa to South Korea.   Jesus' point concerning this is that the Scriptures never teach what they have proposed. Therefore, their “either/or” approach to the matter is invalid. They have assumed that marriage in this life extends beyond this current existence or that there is no such thing as a resurrection.   Because of a presupposition about the matter, they could not consider any other option. The Sadducees failed to know, meaning rightly understand, the Scriptures. But more, Jesus says, “nor the ‘power, the God'.”   Along with their improper handling of Scripture, they put limitations on what God can do. Man was created from the dust of the earth, as recorded in Genesis 2. That means that a particular lump of dust was formed into a man, after which life was breathed into it. It was at this time that man became a living being.   Man is set to die. Some people are burned in the fire, some (like Jezebel) are eaten by animals, while the worm consumes others. Some die in the field, and their bodies fertilize the field, from which comes plant life which is eaten for food.   The Sadducees may have thought, “It is impossible to regather that same lump which formed our good old friend Schlimey. Therefore, Schlimey is gone forever.” This is putting a limitation on God that does not exist. Nothing in Scripture says man is limited to a single lump of clay. Even if the resurrection was dependent on a lump of clay, we are not the same lump of clay from day to day. We eat things from the ground, and our bodies are transformed by what we eat. Eventually, almost all the cells of a body are different than a few years earlier.   If God has formed the body to renew itself in this manner, He can obviously do more than we can even imagine concerning a resurrection from the dead.   Life application: Of this verse, Albert Barnes correctly states, “The way in which the enemies of the truth often attempt to make a doctrine of the Bible ridiculous is by adding to it, and then calling it absurd.”   Unfortunately, even people who support a particular doctrine may unwittingly or unwisely do this. A good example of this is the doctrine of the rapture. It is clearly taught in Scripture. This is not the same event as is being debated by the Sadducees at this point.   A literal resurrection is promised, for example, in Daniel 12:2 and Isaiah 26:19. Those are not rapture verses. They are a promise to the saints of old that the words of the prophets will be fulfilled in a literal resurrection. Israel will lead the nations at that time. As for the rapture, books are written about it. The Left Behind series contains fiction books based on that event and what transpires afterward.   In them are countless things not stated in Scripture about the rapture. For example, it says there will be clothes left behind with no people in them. It also says that there will be babies being born around the world that will suddenly disappear, even during the process of giving birth, etc. Nothing is said about these things in the Bible.   But more, these things cannot be correct. Our physical bodies are corruptible. Paul explicitly says that this corruption cannot inherit incorruption. Paul says that the dead will be raised. Some of the dead have been that way for two thousand years. There is nothing left of their physical body. Thus, it cannot be speaking about that.   Paul also says that those who are alive at that time will be changed, using the word allassó, to make different, as in exchange. In Galatians 4, Paul speaks of changing his voice, meaning the tone of his words. He has one voice and exchanges it for another. Thayer's Greek Lexicon says, “to cause one thing to cease and another to take its place.”   There is no reason to assume innumerable Christian bodies will suddenly disappear. It is contrary to Scripture concerning our corruptible bodies, and it is contrary to what happens to the dead who precede the living. But by inserting this idea into the narrative, confusion of thinking in both Christians and non-Christians has arisen.   People who have heard of this poor doctrine and who also dismiss the rapture may see dead bodies all over and think, “This is something other than what they said would happen to Christians.” The great delusion will be a lot easier to explain with dead bodies than missing bodies with piles of clothes. Whatever is going to happen, it will not include the taking of what is corruptible.   The point is that we need to know Scripture. We need to not insert presuppositions or biases into our doctrine, lest we become just like the Sadducees. In doing this, we will do well.   Lord God, help us to carefully evaluate Your word without coming to erroneous conclusions based on ideas that we presuppose must be the case. That can only harm our walk with You, and it will certainly harm those whom we then teach incorrectly. Help us in this, O God. Amen.
