In our last episode, Ahab struck a deal with Ben-Hadad, the king of Aram instead of destroying him, but because the Lord had set him apart for destruction, an unnamed prophet pronounced judgment on Ahab. Some time passes, and Ahab sets his sights on a field that belongs to another man. After he refuses to sell it, Ahab pouts in his room until Jezebel hatches a scheme to murder him and take his land. Elijah appears to prophecy his demise, and remarkably, Ahab responds with humility. Later, the prophet Micaiah shares a vision of the Lord's throne room where God permits a lying spirit to bring about Ahab's demise. 1 Kings 21 - 1:06 . 1 Kings 22 - 8:00 . Psalm 119:65 - 19:20 .  :::Christian Standard Bible translation. All music written and produced by John Burgess Ross.Co-produced by the Christian Standard Bible.facebook.com/commuterbibleinstagram.com/commuter_bibletwitter.com/CommuterPodpatreon.com/commuterbibleadmin@commuterbible.org

After experiencing the power and authority of the God of Israel on top of Mount Carmel, where fire fell from heaven to consume Elijah's sacrifice, the prophet runs to Jezreel ahead of King Ahab. Upon hearing Jezebel's threats to execute him, Elijah then flees in despair to a distant mountaintop. Later, King Ahab of Israel goes to battle with Ben-Hadad of Aram. The Lord sends an unnamed prophet to alert Ahab that the Lord will win the battle for Israel so that Ahab will know that He alone is God over the whole earth. Then, when Ahab disobeys the Lord's command and spares Ben-Hadad instead of destroying him, the Lord sends another unnamed prophet to pronounce judgment.1 Kings 19 - 1:06 . 1 Kings 20 - 6:29 . Psalm 119:49 - 17:45 .  :::Christian Standard Bible translation. All music written and produced by John Burgess Ross.Co-produced by the Christian Standard Bible.facebook.com/commuterbibleinstagram.com/commuter_bibletwitter.com/CommuterPodpatreon.com/commuterbibleadmin@commuterbible.org

1 Kings 19:1-4 [NKJV]And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, also how he had executed all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.” And when he saw that, he arose and ran for his life, and went to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, “It is enough! Now, Lord, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!”Elijah was discouraged by WORDS. Discouragement is part of the journey of faith. One of the best ways to overcome discouragement is by countering a negative report with a positive report. Do not let people's comments to get to you. Do not allow your situation in life to discourage you to the point of giving up. Keep on confessing what you want to see in your life. Don't lose hope!Hebrews 10:32-35 [MSG]Remember those early days after you first saw the light? Those were the hard times! Kicked around in public, targets of every kind of abuse—some days it was you, other days your friends. If some friends went to prison, you stuck by them. If some enemies broke in and seized your goods, you let them go with a smile, knowing they couldn't touch your real treasure. Nothing they did bothered you, nothing set you back. So don't throw it all away now. You were sure of yourselves then. It's still a sure thing! But you need to stick it out, staying with God's plan so you'll be there for the promised completion.

This teaching outlines a study on identifying and deprogramming individuals from cults, including those that claim to be Christian. The central theme is based on John 8:32, "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free"1. Bern asserts that many denominations traditionally considered true churches are, in fact, cults because they incorporate "doctrines of men" in addition to Christ's teachings. The Bible, specifically its unadulterated doctrine, is presented as the sole authority. For more teachings, books, or if you would like to make a love offering, please visit: https://www.walkinginpower.orgBern examines 22 signs of a cult: Exclusive doctrine not found in scripture.  Salvation through works, often exclusively through the group.  An undetermined future existence.  Extra-biblical revelation (revelation outside the Bible).  Presumptuous leadership that displaces the Holy Spirit's role.  False doctrines embraced as truth.  Syncretism (mixing pagan and divine elements).  Scripture twisting for doctrinal advantage.  Mind control through fear or doctrinal programming.  Absurd lies perpetrated as truth.  Trafficking in the souls of men.  Absolute submission to human authority and doctrines of men.  A false gospel or "another gospel".  Presence of a religious spirit.  Presence of a spirit of antichrist.  Presence of a pharisaical spirit.  Presence of a Jezebel spirit.  Presence of a control spirit.  Presence of the spirit of error.  Presence of Nicolaitanism (clergy control over the laity).  Control of people's will through fear.  Resistance to the Holy Spirit.  This study also addresses understanding individuals caught in cults, noting they often do not understand the sole authority of God's Word (Sola Scriptura) and rely on traditions or human interpretations. Their belief system may represent a lifetime investment, making it difficult for them to accept they could be wrong. They may use tactics like defining discussion terms or claiming interpretations are subjective to avert hearing the truth. Finally, ten principles for deprogramming are given: Take them to an authoritative literal translation of the Bible.  Pray beforehand for the Holy Spirit to prepare their heart and mind.  Show them what scripture says about its own authority (e.g., 2 Timothy 3:16, John 17:17, Numbers 23:19).  Ask them "what is being said here by the Holy Spirit?" to encourage their own thinking.  Be patient and loving.  Emphasize that the words are from the Holy Spirit, not you.  Ask strategic questions about their doctrines' origins.  Bring them to the Bible to show what scripture says about their beliefs.  Take time, covering hardcore doctrines first to dismantle the belief system's infrastructure.  Undermine the authority of their doctrine, source of truth, and false leadership using the Word of God.

Defender of the Faith – Vol. 1This study, Defender of the Faith, is designed to recognize and deprogram individuals from cults, including certain Christian-identifying groups. Rooted in John 8:32, the core message is that freedom comes from knowing and following the pure doctrine of Christ as revealed solely in Scripture. Any addition—man-made doctrines or extra-biblical revelations—creates "another gospel" and leads to deception.22 Signs of a CultBern identifies 22 characteristics common to cults, whether non-Christian, pseudo-Christian, or even within accepted denominations: Exclusive, unscriptural doctrines: Unique teachings not found in the Bible. Salvation by works: Grace is supplemented with human effort. Uncertain eternal future: Members lack assurance of salvation. Extra-biblical authority: Truth claimed from sources outside Scripture. Authoritarian leadership: Leaders assume roles meant for the Holy Spirit. False teachings accepted as truth. Syncretism: Mixing pagan elements with Christian worship. Scripture manipulation: Twisting verses to support specific beliefs. Mind control: Fear-based or doctrinal manipulation. Absurd lies taught as truth. Exploitation of members. Blind submission to human authority. Another gospel: A distorted salvation message. Religious spirit: Legalism disguised as holiness. Antichrist spirit: Denying Christ's true nature. Pharisaical spirit: Overemphasis on outward law. Jezebel spirit: Manipulative control. Control spirit: Excessive control over members' lives. Spirit of error: Leading others from biblical truth. Nicolaitanism: Clergy-layperson divide and domination. Fear-based control. Resistance to the Holy Spirit. Understanding Those in CultsTo effectively help someone out of a cult, it's essential to understand their mindset: Lack of "Sola Scriptura": They don't view Scripture as the final authority. Reliance on human interpretation: Trusting doctrines about God over God's word itself. Ingrained beliefs: Lifelong teachings make them resistant to new ideas. Deep investment: Their identity or career may be tied to the group. Tactics to avoid truth: They may redefine terms, dismiss Scripture, or claim subjective interpretation. Brainwashing: Indoctrination is gradual, persistent, and difficult to undo. Pre-programmed responses: Members are trained to deflect objections instinctively.

SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 329, “The Lord Is Never 'Slow' in Keeping His Promises,” Kim discusses the challenge of waiting on the Lord to fulfill His promises. In today's story, we see the long-awaited fulfillment of the Lord's promise to destroy Queen Jezebel for her lifetime of evil deeds.   Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Kings 9:1-37, with 36-37 as the focal verses:   36 When they returned and told Jehu, he stated, “This fulfills the message from the Lord, which he spoke through his servant Elijah from Tishbe: ‘At the plot of land in Jezreel, dogs will eat Jezebel's body. 37 Her remains will be scattered like dung on the plot of land in Jezreel, so that no one will be able to recognize her.'”     WEEKLY ENGAGEMENT FEATURE:   Spend a few prayerful moments pondering the sometimes perceived slowness of the fulfillment of the promises of God.   Additional Resources and Scriptures:   20 “So, my enemy, you have found me!” Ahab exclaimed to Elijah. “Yes,” Elijah answered, “I have come because you have sold yourself to what is evil in the Lord's sight. 21 So now the Lord says, ‘I will bring disaster on you and consume you. I will destroy every one of your male descendants, slave and free alike, anywhere in Israel! 22 I am going to destroy your family as I did the family of Jeroboam son of Nebat and the family of Baasha son of Ahijah, for you have made me very angry and have led Israel into sin.' 23 “And regarding Jezebel, the Lord says, ‘Dogs will eat Jezebel's body at the plot of land in Jezreel.' 24 “The members of Ahab's family who die in the city will be eaten by dogs, and those who die in the field will be eaten by vultures.” (1 Kings 21:20-24) 8 But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. 9 The Lord isn't really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. Embark on this year-long voyage through the Bible, and let each day's passage uplift and inspire you. TODAY'S EPISODE: Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible, where together we journey through the pages of Scripture and warm our hearts by the fires of God's love. In today's episode, Host Hunter guides us through powerful stories from 2 Kings, 2 Chronicles, and 1 Timothy. We witness the dramatic rise of young King Joash, hidden away during a time of evil, and learn how God is always working behind the scenes—even when darkness seems to rule. As we explore the restoration of the temple and the steadfast hope of God's advancing kingdom, Hunter reminds us that grace is never transactional; it is given freely, before we've done a thing. Settle in as we seek encouragement, realign our hearts with God's truth, and remember together: you are deeply loved—no strings attached. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Seven years is a long time. That's how long Athaliah, the evil queen, ruled over the land and the people of God. Seven years had gone by since she committed unspeakable evil, murdering her own grandchildren. She wore the crown, her power seemed unshakable. She was the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, and the darkness of her reign must have felt never-ending for God's people. It can often feel, in our own lives, that evil is entrenched—that things will always remain as they are, with pain, injustice, or sorrow wearing the crown. But the story of Joash shows us something different: things are not always as they seem, and they will not always be as they are. Even when it looks as though evil is sitting on the throne, God is quietly at work, hidden away, preparing something new, something hopeful. Inside the temple, out of sight, there is a boy—a son. And at just the right moment, when all hope might seem lost, he is revealed. Joash's crowning is a signal: God's kingdom is advancing, even when we cannot see it, even when evil appears enthroned. The crown is placed on Joash's head, the true king is revealed, and the evil reign comes to an end. But Joash, as faithful as he may have been, is not the perfect king we ultimately need. His story, though hopeful, is unfinished and flawed. Our true King is Jesus, God's own Son, who does not falter or fail as Joash did. Jesus is the hidden King, waiting for the right time to be revealed in glory. He is at work—accomplishing all the Father asks, reigning forever. The evil that seems so strong will not last. The kingdom of God will be seen by all. The pages of Scripture remind us that God is always at work behind the scenes. His real King is alive and coming. In times when darkness lingers, when evil seems to rule, do not despair. Hold fast, by the Spirit's power, to the hope of His coming. See and hear this truth—your King is coming. That is my prayer for myself, my family, and for you, dear listener. May we hold on to the hope of Christ's reign, and may we remember: God is at work, even now, in ways we cannot see. Let this hope strengthen us and fill us with courage, as we wait for our King. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Jesus is my shepherd. You have called me by my name into the life of the Beloved. Here in the stillness, I remember that I am not alone. I belong to you and to the great communion of saints and sinners held together in your love. Remind me, Lord, that every breath is grace, every encounter is a chance to give what I have received—mercy without measure. When I forget who I am, when I lose my way, lead me again to still waters. Restore my soul. Renew my hope. Reroute me in the joy of simply being yours. Amen. And now, as our Lord has taught us, we are bold to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Send us a textWhen Edna O'Brien published her debut novel The Country Girls in 1960, she was branded a “Jezebel” in her native Ireland—but that didn't stop her from completing a poignant trilogy about a pair of friends coming of age in a world for which village life and convent school failed to prepare them. Despite initial backlash to her sexually frank depiction of young women's lives and desires, O'Brien's writing brought her acclaim and celebrity status—Vanity Fair dubbed her “the playgirl of the western world.” Novelist Edan Lepucki joins us to discuss the trilogy's timeless appeal and the complicated-but-endearing friendship of characters Kate Brady and Baba Brennan.Mentioned in this episode:The Country Girls trilogy by Edna O'BrienEdna O'Brien interview on BBC's “World Book Club”Time's Mouth by Edan LepuckiCalifornia by Edan LepuckiWoman No. 17 by Edan LepuckiMother's Before by Edan LepuckiItalics Mine Substack by Edan LepuckiAnne of Green Gables by L.M. How Can I Cope With Depression?

Christian Questions Bible Podcast

Depression can be overwhelming. Even though many people suffer from it, and even though there are treatments and medications that can help it, depression can still be an insurmountable life obstacle for every individual who faces it. There is no easy answer and no miracle cure, so those of us who experience it are left with the sober reality of its potential lurking influence in our daily lives. So, what do we do? As Christians we are taught to have faith and rely on God's peace. While this is sound and powerful advice, we need to find ways to deeply rely on our faith and to transform God's peace into a tool of growth and healing. One way to work on this is to observe the struggles of a biblical hero of faith and step-by-step identify with their struggle and their journey towards a more God-driven life. High highs and really low lows After Elijah's stunning victory over the prophets of Baal, he fell into despair. He was depressed. He had successfully demonstrated the supremacy of God as THE God, and yet Queen Jezebel promised to have him killed. These events show us that even God's mightiest servants can struggle deeply. As he ran and hid from Jezebel, he felt completely alone, ineffective and broken. His next journey showed us how feeling depressed can be overwhelming and lead us to internalization, isolation and insulation. Rather than rebuke him, God gently met Elijah with rest, food and a repeated touch through an angel. What a reminder that divine care often comes in quiet, steady steps! Even though Elijah couldn't immediately respond with renewed confidence, God remained present and patient. To counter the internalization, isolation and insulation that depression can bring to us, Elijah's experiences introduced three small steps toward godly peace: Acknowledge: Recognize that God's presence—whether through Scripture, people or providence—is near, even if we don't feel it. Apply: Take steps, however small, to act on that external input. Elijah walked 40 days to Mount Horeb, still burdened, but at least moving. Allow: Permit God's truth and love to take root, even while feeling numb, broken or depressed. Once Elijah arrived at Mount Horeb, God's question, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” invited introspection, not condemnation. This question would open the door to Elijah being able to realize that he wasn't alone. As a matter of fact, there were 7,000 others in Israel who were faithful to God! The lesson for Elijah and for us is that depression doesn't disqualify faith! On the other hand, God often calls those who struggle so His strength can shine through them.

THE ELDEST SON of good King Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, was more like his mother-in-law, Jezebel, than his father. After Jehoshaphat's death, Jehoram killed his brothers and turned his kingdom toward the gods of the Amorites (i.e., Phoenicians) worshiped by Jezebel. As a result, Jezebel was afflicted with a terrible and horribly painful disease that killed him seven years later. Jehoram's son, Ahaziah, reigned only one year when he was killed by Jehu while visiting his uncle, Ahab's son Joram. Upon his death, Jehoram's wife, Ahab's daughter Athaliah seized the throne, killed the royal family of Judah—the House of David—and reigned as queen for seven years. She appears to have been cut from the same cloth as her mother, Jezebel.  But after seven years, the high priest Jehoiada, who'd been secretly raising Ahaziah's youngest son, Joash, declared the boy king, had Athaliah put to death, and tore down the temple of Baal in Jerusalem. At the end of the day, all of the political machinations involving the land of Israel down to the present day are reflections of the war in the unseen realm for control of God's mount of assembly—Zion. Second Sunday after Pentecost Old Testament: 1 Kings 19:1-4, (5-7), 8-15a 1Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So may the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life like the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.” 3Then he was afraid; he got up and fled for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongs to Judah; he left his servant there. 4But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors.” [5Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, “Get up and eat.” 6He looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. 7The angel of the Lord came a second time, touched him, and said, “Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you.”] 8He got up, and ate and drank; then he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God. 9At that place he came to a cave, and spent the night there. Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”10He answered, “I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.” 11He said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake;12and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence. 13When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then there came a voice to him that said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 14He answered, “I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.” 15Then the Lord said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus.” Psalm: Psalm 42 and 43 1 As the deer longs for the water-brooks, *         so longs my soul for you, O God. 2 My soul is athirst for God, athirst for the living God; *         when shall I come to appear before the presence of God? 3 My tears have been my food day and night, *         while all day long they say to me,         “Where now is your God?” 4 I pour out my soul when I think on these things: *         how I went with the multitude and led them into the                               house of God, 5 With the voice of praise and thanksgiving, *         among those who keep holy-day. 6 Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul? *         and why are you so disquieted within me? 7 Put your trust in God; *         for I will yet give thanks to him,         who is the help of my countenance, and my God. 8 My soul is heavy within me; *         therefore I will remember you from the land of Jordan,         and from the peak of Mizar among the heights of Hermon. 9 One deep calls to another in the noise of your cataracts; *         all your rapids and floods have gone over me. 10 The Lord grants his loving-kindness in the daytime; *         in the night season his song is with me,         a prayer to the God of my life. 11 I will say to the God of my strength,    “Why have you forgotten me? *         and why do I go so heavily while the enemy                               oppresses me?” 12 While my bones are being broken, *         my enemies mock me to my face; 13 All day long they mock me *         and say to me, “Where now is your God?” 14 Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul? *         and why are you so disquieted within me? 15 Put your trust in God; *         for I will yet give thanks to him,         who is the help of my countenance, and my God. 1 Give judgment for me, O God,    and defend my cause against an ungodly people; *         deliver me from the deceitful and the wicked. 2 For you are the God of my strength;   why have you put me from you? *         and why do I go so heavily while the enemy                                oppresses me? 3 Send out your light and your truth, that they may lead me, *         and bring me to your holy hill         and to your dwelling; 4 That I may go to the altar of God,    to the God of my joy and gladness; *         and on the harp I will give thanks to you, O God my God. 5 Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul? *         and why are you so disquieted within me? 6 Put your trust in God; *         for I will yet give thanks to him,         who is the help of my countenance, and my God. Old Testament: Isaiah 65:1-9 1I was ready to be sought out by those who did not ask, to be found by those who did not seek me. I said, “Here I am, here I am,” to a nation that did not call on my name. 2I held out my hands all day long to a rebellious people, who walk in a way that is not good, following their own devices; 3a people who provoke me to my face continually, sacrificing in gardens and offering incense on bricks; 4who sit inside tombs, and spend the night in secret places; who eat swine's flesh, with broth of abominable things in their vessels; 5who say, “Keep to yourself, do not come near me, for I am too holy for you.” These are a smoke in my nostrils, a fire that burns all day long. 6See, it is written before me: I will not keep silent, but I will repay; I will indeed repay into their laps7their iniquities and their ancestors' iniquities together, says the Lord; because they offered incense on the mountains and reviled me on the hills, I will measure into their laps full payment for their actions. 8Thus says the Lord: As the wine is found in the cluster, and they say, “Do not destroy it, for there is a blessing in it,” so I will do for my servants' sake, and not destroy them all. 9I will bring forth descendants from Jacob, and from Judah inheritors of my mountains; my chosen shall inherit it, and my servants shall settle there. Psalm: Psalm 22:18-27 18 Be not far away, O Lord; *         you are my strength; hasten to help me. 19 Save me from the sword, *         my life from the power of the dog. 20 Save me from the lion's mouth, *         my wretched body from the horns of wild bulls. 21 I will declare your Name to my brethren; *         in the midst of the congregation I will praise you. 22 Praise the Lord, you that fear him; *         stand in awe of him, O offspring of Israel;         all you of Jacob's line, give glory. 23 For he does not despise nor abhor the poor in their poverty;     neither does he hide his face from them; *          but when they cry to him he hears them. 24 My praise is of him in the great assembly; *         I will perform my vows in the presence of those who                            worship him. 25 The poor shall eat and be satisfied,     and those who seek the Lord shall praise him: *         “May your heart live for ever!” 26 All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to                               the Lord, *         and all the families of the nations shall bow before him. 27 For kingship belongs to the Lord; *         he rules over the nations. Epistle: Galatians 3:23-29 23Now before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would be revealed. 24Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. 25But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, 26for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. 27As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. 29And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to the promise. Gospel: Luke 8:26-39 26Then they arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27As he stepped out on land, a man of the city who had demons met him. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he did not live in a house but in the tombs. 28When he saw Jesus, he fell down before him and shouted at the top of his voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me”— 29for Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many times it had seized him; he was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the wilds.) 30Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” He said, “Legion”; for many demons had entered him. 31They begged him not to order them to go back into the abyss. 32Now there on the hillside a large herd of swine was feeding; and the demons begged Jesus to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. 33Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. 34When the swineherds saw what had happened, they ran off and told it in the city and in the country.35Then people came out to see what had happened, and when they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid.36Those who had seen it told them how the one who had been possessed by demons had been healed. 37Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them; for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. 38The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39“Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him.

Elisha continues to complete the ministry of Elijah by causing Jehu to be anointed as the next king of Israel. Jehu initially shows some humility as he begins to come into power in the land of Israel, and even bears some resemblance to David and other good kings in David's line. Jehu begins to fulfill the LORD's Word against the house of Ahab by killing Joram the king of Israel, Ahaziah the king of Judah, and Jezebel the widow of Ahab.  Rev. Phillip Fischaber, pastor at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Walnut, IL, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study 2 Kings 9:1-37.  To learn more about Holy Trinity, visit www.htlcwalnut.org. "A Kingdom Divided” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through 1-2 Kings. The division in the kingdom of Israel in this part of history was greater than a matter of north and south. The biggest division was between the people and their God. Yet even as the people rebelled against the LORD as their King, still He remained faithful to call them back to Himself through His prophets, working through history to send the good and gracious King, Jesus Christ. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

In our last episode, Ahab struck a deal with Ben-Hadad, the king of Aram instead of destroying him, but because the Lord had set him apart for destruction, an unnamed prophet pronounces judgment on Ahab. 1 Kings 21 – 1:07 . 1 Kings 22 – 7:42 . Psalm 95 – 18:41 .  :::Christian Standard Bible translation. All music written and produced by John Burgess Ross.Co-produced by Bobby Brown, Katelyn Pridgen, Eric Williamson & the Christian Standard Biblefacebook.com/commuterbibleinstagram.com/commuter_bibletwitter.com/CommuterPodpatreon.com/commuterbibleadmin@commuterbible.org

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Sarah Seltzer, author of the book The Singer Sisters. Sarah is writer in New York City where she lives with her family surrounded by books, records, CDs—and a lot of snacks. Her debut novel THE SINGER SISTERS, about a family of folk rock singers who express their conflicts, secrets, betrayals and love through music, was published by Flatiron Books in summer 2024 and was a USA Today Bestseller!   She is an editor at Lilith Magazine and has been a journalist for many big and small publications from Jezebel to the New York Times reporting on activism and culture, and writing essays, cultural criticism, and the occasional opinion piece.   In my book review, I stated The Singer Sisters by Sarah Seltzer is a women's fiction with a dash of musical historical fiction thrown in for good measure. If you love a good family saga filled with generational expectations, family secrets, addictions, mental health issues, unplanned pregnancies, adoption, abortion, sexual orientation, and mother/daughter struggles, then this is the novel for you. The key players are Judie and her sister Sylvia, folk singers who made a name in the 1960s and Emma, who is Judie's daughter and wants to make her own musical mark in the world- along with a great cast of secondary characters who give the book a beautiful flavor. Against the backdrop of a musical family, we soon become embroiled in family drama. As Emma begins her journey toward fame, she learns lessons about herself, her life, and her mother. And despite this story being about a famous family, it could be about you. It seems that all families have their love, secrets, shame, and problems! I loved the nods to famous singers from the 1960s who were trying to be the next great Dylan as well as singers from the 1990s who were angry, combat boot wearing women trying to show the world how little had changed. But mostly, I loved moving along life with a family that was just trying to make it work. This is definitely a must-read!     Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Sarah Seltzer Website: https://sarahseltzer.wordpress.com/ Social media: X: @sarahmseltzer FB: @Sarah.Seltzer IG: @sarahmseltzer LinkedIn: @Sarah M Seltzer   Purchase The Singer Sisters on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/4jiUtAo Ebook: https://amzn.to/3FphALw   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? When Miss Jezebel first debuted, no one had really ever seen anything like it before. It incorporated an actor into the gameplay in a way that felt more akin to larp or interactive theater. For those in the right mindset, it was uproariously funny. It was also screamingly vulgar, with adult props that would make a bachelor party blush. It was an instant darling of the Los Angeles escape room scene. Brian Corbitt, creator of Miss Jezebel, joins us in his second appearance on the Spoilers Club for a tell-all. One of his mantras is "Players loved getting trolled." Indeed he did, especially when it came to making out with sock puppets, having to quietly rip a giant piece of velcro apart, or searching for limes. Many of his interactions were designed to maximize fun, while showcasing the players' ability to improvise under pressure. They usually rose to the occasion, much to the amusement of their friends. AHAB OBVIOUSLY didn't wear the pants in his family. This week, we discuss the episode of Naboth's vineyard. Ahab pouted because Naboth refused to sell it to the king. Jezebel solved that problem by writing an order using Ahab's royal seal—an early example of the autopen?—falsely accusing Naboth of cursing God and Ahab (an early example of lawfare!). For this sin, Elijah was told by God to let Ahab know that his days were numbered and that his dynasty would end with his son. 1 Kings 22 gives us an example of the divine council in action: “Therefore hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing beside him on his right hand and on his left; 20 and the Lord said, ‘Who will entice Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead?' And one said one thing, and another said another. 21 Then a spirit came forward and stood before the Lord, saying, ‘I will entice him.' 22 And the Lord said to him, ‘By what means?' And he said, ‘I will go out, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.' And he said, ‘You are to entice him, and you shall succeed; go out and do so.' (1 Kings 22:19–22, ESV) It goes without saying that God knew how this would play out. And He certainly didn't need the help of this unnamed spirit to carry out His will. God created the divine council for the same reason He created you and us: He desires family. NOTE: We will be at the Mysteries of the BibleVerse conference in Indianapolis next weekend.
