Welcome to What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploring key issues currently shaping Israel and the Jewish World, with host Amanda Borschel-Dan speaking with The Times of Israel's senior analyst Haviv Rettig Gur. BBC director-general Tim Davie and Deborah Turness, the chief executive of BBC News, stepped down this week after being in the firing line for months over allegations of bias — including the national broadcaster’s coverage of antisemitism, the war in Gaza, and Israel more generally. Rettig Gur is just back from London, and we hear his disheartening impressions of how that corner of the Jewish Diaspora is faring. US President Donald Trump sent a letter to Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Wednesday formally asking Israel’s head of state to pardon Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is on trial for corruption. Herzog's office issued a statement that a pardon request must go through the proper channels. We first ask whether a pardon is even possible, if, as Opposition Leader Yair Lapid stated Wednesday, it would require the premier to admit he broke the law. Regardless of admissions of guilt, Rettig Gur explains why he has some hopes that Netanyahu will be pardoned. Spoiler: It's not because Rettig Gur is especially a fan of Israel's leader. And so this week, we ask Haviv Rettig Gur, what matters now. What Matters Now podcasts are available for download on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts. Donald Trump just issued 77 pardons, including for six individuals who were unindicted co-conspirators in Trump's federal criminal indictment for his efforts to steal the 2020 presidential election. Trump has now pardoned Rudy Giuliani, John Eastman, Sidney Powell, Jeffrey Clark, Kenneth Chesebro, Boris Epstein, Jenna Ellis, Mark Meadows and many others. This feels like a recruiting effort by Trump. He seems to be calling all insurrectionists to join him in future efforts to interfere in America's elections, sending the signal that he will pardon them if they join his criminal conspiracy. In today’s Rickey Smiley Morning Show Podcast, four compelling stories captured our attention. Ari Lennox stirred debate by calling out the show Martin's insensitive colorist jokes directed at Pam (played by Tichina Arnold), expressing frustration that the humor dismissed the beauty and dignity of darker-skinned women— and not everyone agreed with her sentiments. The episode also covered the fallout involving Shannon Sharpe, who has officially parted ways with ESPN following a high-profile sexual assault settlement; the split comes amid ongoing scrutiny and public fallout from comments made by comedian Mo’Nique about Sharpe’s relationships. Topping it all, political headlines turned personal: President Trump is reportedly in talks to potentially pardon Sean “Diddy” Combs, a move that’s sparked fierce debate over justice, celebrity influence, and political strategy amid Diddy’s transportation conviction and pending sentencing.
