As we head into a new year we often have plans, goals, and maybe even a "word" we're going after in the new year. But have we slowed down long enough to ask God for his plans and thoughts for us this year?Scripture tells us that God has many thoughts for us. In fact, David tells us in a Psalm we will be studying that his thoughts for us outnumber the grains of sand of the sea shore… that's a lot of thoughts! But do we know what they are? Have we treasured them as the Psalm tells us to do and sought them out so we know where we ought to go this year? Often we miss God's thoughts and goals for us in a new year because we have our own thoughts and goals. But the truth is, if our biggest goal for 2026 is something we can do without God then it's probably not from God. God wants to do something through us only he can do, but he's waiting on our “yes.” See without him we can't, but without us he often won't. God wants partnership with us, for us to lean into his will for our year. And there's no safer, happier, or more fulfilling place to be than the will of God. See 2026 is not about what we could do, it's about what we're called to do. This week we kicked off our new Christmas series, Misfit Toys! In this series, we see that Christmas and misfits go hand-in-hand (Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, Buddy the elf, and so on), but they also play a huge part in the Bible story, and specifically the Christmas narrative.Over the next few weeks, we will be taking a look at some of these misfit characters; taking a look at who they were, and the things that they did, in hopes that these would encourage us in our walks with Jesus.This Sunday we began by taking a look at Joseph, one of the most important and yet understated characters in the Christmas story. What's the deal with anger?You've probably heard it described as a secondary emotion; something that masks the primary issues in our life. You might not know that most psychologists are actually split on that idea. Many describe anger as being primary to our humanity; something that in many cases is unavoidable.And the Bible actually paints a similar picture of anger being complex. Lust can become a very powerful force in our lives. It has the ability to produce an appetite in us that is often uncontrolled. It tries to, even for a moment, hijack our mind, body, and behavior to drive us to do things we never thought we would do. Because of this, the apostle Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 6 to respond to lust in a very unique way: “FLEE!” Do not just pray about it, think about it, read about it, ask about it… Run away. If we're honest, sometimes we get away, but other times we do not, as Lust creeps into our hearts, souls, and minds. And yet as we step into this conversation please know: Lust is not safe. But you are. Lust is not welcomed. But you are. The devil is a liar and there's no condemnation in Christ Jesus. This Sunday we celebrated Commitment Sunday, a powerful moment in our Multiply journey as we came together to trust God with our future, filled out “Multiply” cards, gave, and made new and fresh commitments to God. All throughout scripture it is evident that being committed to God and what he calls us to do is very important to him. But we live in a very non committing culture, have you noticed? More and more people hit the “maybe” button on the invite. Often we are scared to commit and want to keep our options open. This week we talked about Greed… Just a fun, little, easy topic right? The reality is, exposing Greed can be jolting to our flesh because it has become such a part of the fabric of our culture. Even in a nation with a strong Christian heritage, sins like Greed have not only become normal, they're celebrated… Until you open God's Word.Jesus in the Gospels warns us about, not just money itself, but rather relying on money too much. See Greed isn't just about money. It's about trust. It's that quiet voice that tells us if we could just get a little more, we'd finally have enough, more comfort, more control, more certainty. Have you ever noticed how much time we spend measuring things in life? We keep track of promotions, paychecks, grades, likes, followers, even steps on our watches. Measuring isn't the problem, it's just that sometimes we're measuring the wrong things.That's exactly what Jesus addresses in Matthew 25. This week we took a look at when the disciples had their first real run-in with the law. After preaching about Jesus in the streets, Peter and John get arrested and now stand before the most powerful leaders in their world, the guys who sent Jesus to the cross. They probably should have been terrified... but they weren't. They stood their ground and were bold in their faith. In fact, this stunned the religious leaders so much that they even decided to let Peter and John go, calling them in Greek, “idiotes.” Any guesses on what that word is in English? Following Jesus did something to them. It changed the way they thought. It changed their logic. Jesus awakened their hearts and minds to His Kingdom and it changed what they were afraid of, it changed what they were willing to risk, and it changed their definition of success. When we think about success or failure in life, what do we think of? Who or what taught us to think the way we think?Even if we love and believe in Jesus, sometimes our logic and ways of thinking have nothing to do with Jesus. Maybe we at times have learned a little too much from this world and need to be reawakened to Jesus' paradoxical way of living. You ever feel like you're doing all the right things spiritually... showing up, serving, trying your best, but something still feels off? Evangelism is a tricky thing, isn't it? On the one hand, it's something that can seem so foreign and uncomfortable to us (in part due to some really bad examples we've gotten). And on the other hand, it's something that we often see reserved for a select few who God has called for that purpose.In Acts chapter 20, Paul makes what shouldn't be, but often is a stunning revelation: that the job of evangelism belongs to all of us.
