That's the intriguing thesis of the illustrious Columbia University intellectual historian, Mark Lilla, in his new book, Ignorance is Bliss. It all begins, of course, inside Plato's cave in his Republic, that metaphorical preface to Western thought where we are subjected to illusionary shadows and delusional reflections. And, for Lilla at least, it may end in the America of late 2024, where many of us appear to relish being back in Plato's cave, staring - sometimes even perhaps knowingly - at illusionary shadows and delusional reflections. Ignorance closely related to the lack of everything that springs from the enlightenment of good and a actionable information. Denying that the information to profit exists within would be a lie, so what is the problem? Lack of information or action. Without information, there would be poorly informed action if it goes sideways. With information, it would be a well informed action. Then there is guts, void of information and the pondering of action. With the level of information at our disposal, it's easy to get catch the noise rather than getting the signal. My friend recently married his bride in the beautiful area of Sri Lanka which has a population of about 22 million people (compare that to our over 350 million in the United States).   This is an area where most people live modest lives in villages.
