Why Doesn't God Make His Existence Unmistakably Clear to Everyone? One of the most common objections to faith is: “If God is real, why doesn't He just show Himself beyond all doubt?” Skeptics ask why God doesn't write His name in the sky or make His presence undeniable. But Scripture, reason, and the earliest witnesses of the Church tell us a different story: God has already made Himself known, yet it is humanity that hides. In other words, it's NOT God, it's us!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/reason-for-truth--2774396/support.
Title: “Who Commands the Waves and Wind?” Part 1 Text: Acts 27:1-12 FCF: We often struggle enduring in faith when we face circumstances, we know God could spare us from. Prop: Because God's providence often includes opposition from forces of nature, we must look beyond ourselves to endure in faith. Scripture Intro: Turn in your bible to Acts chapter 27. It is even more important for you to turn there today considering that there will be no text on the screen. In a moment, I will read the first 36 verses of Acts 27 from the Legacy Standard bible. You can follow along in the pew bible or in whatever version you prefer. As we hasten onward toward the end of this study in the book of Acts, one which has taken us over two years to get to this point, Luke ushers us toward the final episodes of this last Act of his narrative. Luke's purposes have never been to provide a strict history of the early church. Instead, he has written to confirm to a man named Theophilus, and by extension all believers in Jesus Christ, that what we have believed is true and dependable. In this final Act, Luke has not so subtly shown how God is in control of all things and works all things according to the counsel of His will to accomplish His purposes and complete His story of the world which He has already written. Paul has no more criminal trials to face save one. A hearing before Emperor Nero in Rome. A hearing granted to all Roman citizens who appeal to Caesar. And so, in what could have been a short 24 day trip, we will see that God has other things planned for this apostle. Please stand with me to focus on and give honor to the Word of God as it is read. Invocation: Most Gracious, Holy, Loving, and Powerful God. You are Alpha and Omega. You are the first and You are the last. From You all of creation has life and by You all of creation consists. There is not one rogue molecule in creation for You control everything for Your glory and for Your purposes. In a day and an age when such doctrines are derided and hated by natural men and even despised by some who claim to be Your people, I pray that we would find comfort and peace in believing that nothing happens without Your plan and consent and without some purpose for which You have established before the foundation of the World. Help us today to see these truths in spite of what our eyes see… we pray this in Jesus' name… Amen. Transition: Let's get right to the text this morning. I.) God's providence often includes opposition from forces of nature, so we must trust the Lord. (1-8) a. 1 - Now when it was decided that we would sail for Italy, they proceeded to deliver Paul and some other prisoners to a centurion of the Augustan cohort named Julius. 2 - And getting aboard an Adramyttian ship, which was about to sail to the regions along the coast of Asia, we set sail accompanied by Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica. 3 - The next day we put in at Sidon, and Julius treated Paul with consideration and allowed him to go to his friends and receive care. 4 - And from there we set sail and sailed under the shelter of Cyprus because the winds were against us. i. So, after 2 years of waiting for the Lord Jesus' words to come to pass, that Paul would go to Rome to preach the gospel, it seems that Paul is finally on his way. ii. Paul, along with other prisoners, was transferred into the guard of a centurion who would have been stationed in Judea. A centurion of the Augustan cohort. iii. Luke no doubt provides this information to us to establish secular witness to the events that he is about to describe in the next chapter and a half. iv. Many of the events that follow are quite unbelievable. But Luke has provided enough information to track this Roman Centurion down and ask him directly if such things have occurred. v. Julius charts a merchant ship from Adramyttium, a city in a bay across from the island of Lesbos between Troas and Pergamum. vi. Why does he chart a merchant ship? vii. Quite simply, there was no other way to travel by sea in the Roman Empire. There were vessels of commerce and vessels of war. There was no such thing as passenger vessels. viii. This ship's destination was to travel the coast of Asia minor, no doubt heading back to the Adramyttium. ix. Luke also lists two more of Paul's companions who joined him on this trip and would serve as eye witnesses to all that happened. The first is very obvious. 1. Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica, is probably the same Aristarchus who was dragged into the theater to face the rioting crowds in Ephesus in Acts 19. a. Aristarchus is also said to have accompanied Paul to Jerusalem on his most recent visit that has turned into a 2-year plus endeavor. b. It is impossible to know if Aristarchus has been in Jerusalem or Caesarea since Paul was imprisoned. But he seems to have been in Caesarea in time to join Paul on his trip to Rome. 2. The second companion is harder to spot, but since you all are very perceptive people, I'm sure you have spotted Luke in this text. a. In verse 1 it says “we would sail” meaning of course that Paul's companion Luke would join him on this trip too. b. So, both Luke and Aristarchus would be eye witnesses to the events that would follow. x. They sail 70 nautical miles to the city of Sidon in Syria. xi. The church had spread to Sidon some time ago. xii. Julius allowed Paul to leave the ship, probably with a soldier to escort him as waited for the next departure of the Adramyttium ship. xiii. No doubt these believers gave supplies to Paul and his companions for their journey. xiv. But verse 4 delivers a key theme for us in this entire maritime adventure narrative. xv. The winds were against this journey. We see great opposition to this trip from the winds of the Mediterranean Sea. And that opposition will only intensify. xvi. This Adramyttian ship endeavored to sail along the coast of Syria, but instead headed out to sea to be sheltered from the northwestern and western winds by the island of Cyprus. b. 5 - And when we had sailed through the sea along the coast of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we landed at Myra in Lycia. 6 - There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship sailing for Italy, and he put us aboard it. 7 - And when we had sailed slowly for a good many days, and with difficulty had arrived off Cnidus, since the wind did not permit us to go farther, we sailed under the shelter of Crete, off Salmone; 8 - and with difficulty, we sailed past it and came to a place called Fair Havens, near which was the city of Lasea. i. Sailing between Asia minor and Cyprus along the coast, the Adramyttium ship landed at its next port, Myra of Lycia. ii. No doubt the next stop for this ship would have either been Adramyttium itself or possibly Ephesus. And it probably would not leave for some time… perhaps not even until after winter. iii. Therefore, Julius is forced to chart another ship whose destination would be Italy. iv. We find that Julius charts an Alexandrian ship. These were from the city of Alexandria and would transport grain throughout the Roman Empire, but especially to Rome. v. Having landed in Myra, this ship either came up the coast, past Judea and Syria, and had landed in Myra seeking to head west, or perhaps headed north straight through the Mediterranean toward the easily visible mountainous coast of Asia Minor. vi. We can read between the lines of Luke's record here to understand that the sailing was anything but smooth or predictable. vii. From Cnidus, which was a common port city having two ports, one on the North and one on the South, either they aimed to sail across the Aegean, potentially to Corinth or Athens or perhaps they did intend to sail to the northern edge of Cete to go around the Balkan Peninsula. viii. But because of the dangerous gales, they were forced to once again seek the shelter of the large island of Crete sailing south past the cape of Salmone. ix. Once again, we see the difficulty of the trip and how the forces of nature seem to oppose the will of Jesus and the intention of His apostle. x. With much trouble and very slowly they finally arrive at a southern port on the island of Crete known as Fair Havens near the city of Lasea. c. Summary of the Point: In this maritime adventure which Luke records for us, we could very easily lose the forest for the trees if we are not careful. We could get wrapped up in the adventure of the storm tossed ship and miss the greater message that Luke is revealing to Theophilus and all believers needing assurance that what they have believed is firm and solid. Jesus told Paul 2 years ago that he would go to Rome to preach the gospel… and now the very wind and sea oppose him getting there. But as the sermon title asks… who commands the wind and the sea? John Chrysostom, an early church father said of this passage of scripture, “See how God does not alter or change the order of nature but allows him to sail into unfavorable winds. But even so the miracle happens.” John Chrysostom Homilies on the Acts of the Apostles. In another work he says, “Again trials, again contrary winds. See how the life of the saints is so composed of all these things: he escaped the court, and they fall into a shipwreck and a storm.” John Chrysostom Catena on the Acts of the Apostles. In these two quotes Chrysostom conveys what Luke's aim of this story is. Paul has been shipwrecked before. He has spent much time at sea. Why does Luke record this now? Because Luke, in his final chapter, wishes to convey the absolute sovereignty of God to take His Kingdom to the uttermost parts of the earth. But in that sovereignty, it is not merely raw Power that God is displaying… for the purposes of God are not merely to get His apostle to Rome but also to form and shape Paul's faith. As one commentator said, “God could demonstrate His power by stilling the storm (as in Luke 8:24-25) but also by preserving His servant through it...” “Luke's apologetic is not for a legendary divine man; Paul does not still the storm. But the account portrays Paul's character preserving through testing… as well as speaking wisely and rescuing his fellow passengers by God's power.” God commands the winds and the seas… but that doesn't mean He always works miraculously. Indeed, one of the more wonderous miracles God does is providentially sustaining His people through catastrophe. In this the miracle that occurs is our faith and hope, tested and built. Therefore, knowing that God does not always choose to intervene with miracles… but does keep His promises… we must trust the Lord. Transition: But in the midst of trouble and trial, when everything seems to be against us, and when forces that God says He controls seem to be out of His control… it can be very hard for us to trust God and to know what to do next. Although Jesus has gone to the Father to intercede for us, He has both promised to never leave us and to send the comforter. And the comforter is in our hearts and all the hearts of those who believe. Struggling to see where I'm going? Let's look at verse nine. II.) God's providence often includes opposition from forces of nature, so we must heed counsel from wise and godly people. (9-12) a. 9 - And when considerable time had passed and the voyage was now dangerous, since even the Fast was already over, Paul began to advise them, 10 - and said to them, “Men, I perceive that the voyage will certainly be with damage and great loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.” i. Luke does not track for us the departure date of this trip, nor does he give us any indication of exactly when Portius Festus took office. ii. So, we don't know exactly how long the trip has taken thus far – but he seems to indicate that what began as a doable trip to Rome has become less and less likely. iii. Luke tells us that the Fast was already over. Most likely Luke is referring the Day of Atonement which occurs in late September to early October depending on the year. iv. And the best guess for dating this trip is in AD 59 when the Day of Atonement occurred on October 5th. v. At this time, mid-September to mid-November becomes increasingly more and more difficult to travel the Mediterranean as the winter months approach. vi. After this period virtually all sea travel would cease until around February. vii. According to a Stanford Geospatial Network model of the Roman World, it is estimated that under ideal conditions, Paul would have been able to make the journey from Caesarea to Rome in just under 24 days. viii. Which means that they probably left with at least that amount of time before really difficult sailing conditions would arise. ix. But as Luke indicates here, violent winds began earlier than usual this year and kept them from making any significant progress. Now they face only more difficult sailing conditions as they head further into October and November. x. In light of this, Paul advises those in charge of the ship that this journey will end not only in the loss of the ship and all its cargo, but also in the loss of life. xi. Essentially Paul is advising wintering in Fair Havens and waiting until February to reembark to Italy. xii. In this we have a few questions. First, is Paul speaking the words of prophesy or merely of human wisdom? If it is prophesy, does it come true? If it is wisdom, what makes Paul such an expert that he would advise seasoned merchant sailors? 1. As to the first question, is Paul speaking the words of prophesy or merely human wisdom – we must conclude that this is NOT prophesy. Why must we conclude that? a. Paul predicts that the ship, its cargo, and the lives of the passengers on the ship would experience heavy damage and great loss. b. Peeking ahead a little, we see Paul predict a little later that every life on board the ship would be saved. When he predicts this, he attributes that prediction to the Word of God communicated by an Angel. 2. Therefore, we must conclude that in this instance, Paul speaks merely by his own wisdom. But if that is so, what makes Paul qualified to speak to such matters? a. Having written II Corinthians sometime before going to Jerusalem, Paul has already told us that he had been shipwrecked 3 times and left afloat in the open sea for a night and a day. b. Luke didn't record any of these for us – but it proves that Paul is no novice passenger on a sea faring vessel. c. It also communicates to us the very real danger of travel on the Mediterranean d. Paul's concerns here are not just for the ship and the cargo but for the lives of the people on board. e. Since these ships were ships of commerce, lives didn't always factor in to the decision making of the owners, captains, and crews of these vessels. xiii. And that seems to remain true even after Paul gives his advice. b. 11 - But the centurion was being more persuaded by the pilot and the captain of the ship than by what was being said by Paul. 12 - And because the harbor was not suitable for wintering, the majority reached a decision to set sail from there, if somehow, they could arrive at Phoenix, a harbor of Crete facing southwest and northwest, to spend the winter there. i. Julius, the pilot, and the captain of the ship disagreed. ii. Their reasons are logical but next to the advice of a man of God, they are ultimately quite foolish. iii. The scriptures declare that the wisdom of men is foolishness to God. iv. So, what is the wisdom of men? Unfortunately, it is always tainted by sin. In this particular case… greed. 1. Fair Havens is not a port that provides adequate shelter for wintering. 2. It was not the kind of living conditions the crew desired to spend the next several months. 3. There was a significant risk to the cargo being spoiled or damaged, the ship being beaten up or broken, or even the prisoners escaping. 4. Ultimately the wisdom and logic of men comes down to dollars and cents. v. Instead of heeding the advice of Paul, they determined to get to Phoenix, a port giving great vision to both the South and the Northwest of the Mediterranean. A port right for wintering and one which they could depart from with relative confidence as to their heading. vi. This is the wisdom of men. But it will all go terribly wrong. More on that next week. c. Summary of the Point: Luke's point will continue to be how God's will includes providentially allowing the forces of nature to oppose His people. He preserves us through this, which is a testament to His grace, mercy and power, and He tests and perfects our faith in it. He does not always perform miracles to spare us pain, but miraculously sustains us through pain and difficulty while allowing us to continue to faithfully believe and follow Him, even when it seems as if He is slack in His promises. But as we face these difficult times and days, Paul provides another application for us aside from trusting the Lord. Not only must we continue to trust God in difficult times – but we must also trust the counsel of biblically wise people. Paul provides wise insight. And even though it is not about a “spiritual” or “theological” matter – he should have been heeded. When we face trouble, trial, testing and storms in life, we must look to spiritually mature counselors… NOT JUST for spiritual problems… but for all problems. Why? Because God's Word is sufficient to help us in all things we face. In all life and godliness the Word is sufficient. So, we must go to those who love and live by the Word for advice and counsel. And we must heed their counsel. Conclusion: So CBC, what have we learned today that informs and corrects our beliefs and guides our lifestyles? Basics of Faith and Practice: One common objection raised by skeptics of God is whether or not God can create a boulder so large that He could not lift it. It is not typically a question asked in good faith. For regardless of the answer, they think they've proven that He is not all powerful. Whenever someone asks a question that begins with “Could God…” you know immediately that the question is flawed. Why? Because God can… ALWAYS. There is nothing that is impossible with God. Ability is NEVER the question. The real question is about the will of God. And that is demonstrated right here in this text? Could God have stopped the storms? Could God have calmed the sea? We know He could. Why? Because He already did it. The Spirit of God moved on the face of the chaotic waters when He formed the earth. God the Father parted the Red Sea to allow the Israelites to walk on dry land. The Son of God stretched His hand out and said, “Peace, be still” And calmed a storm. My friends the question is NEVER “Can God?” it is always “Will God?” For whatever reason… God allows catastrophe to happen to all men… even His own children. Even His own apostles. Even… His own Son. He allows natural forces and even men's sinful nature to do many things to oppose His children. And we can guess at the whys of that… but maybe for today, we don't need to answer the question why. Because why isn't the right question! Paul addresses a similar argument in Romans 9 when some might complain that they were not elected for salvation and wonder why God judges them for something He did not choose for them to have. Paul says, essentially, you are asking the wrong question. How dare you question God. The right question… is what. In the midst of natural forces opposing me in doing what I know the Lord wishes me to do… What do I do? And this text provides two answers for us. One hinted and the other overtly stated. We must continue to trust the Lord's promises and we must heed the counsel of wise and godly people. But let me expand a bit on this. A few applicational groceries for you to make some spiritual meals with as the week unfolds. 1.) Refutation: “What lies must we cast down” or “What do we naturally believe, or have been taught to believe, that this passage shows is false?” We must deny that natural forces opposing God's people is a valid reason to question God's Word or character. a. This text alone proves that to question God's promises or God's loving character based on tragic circumstances is absolutely ridiculous. b. God's promises and God's character is not beholden to everything always going right for mankind or even for His chosen people. c. God does work miracles for the sake of His will but He does not ALWAYS do this, nor does He always do miracles in every identical situation that follows that miracle. d. God told Moses to strike the rock and then God told Moses to speak to the Rock. e. Moses struck the Rock twice and both times produced water… but God had OTHER pictures he wished to convey to Moses and to the Israelites by Moses speaking to it instead of striking it. f. Just because God acts differently or allows people to suffer or even die does not mean we are free to begin questioning whether or not God is all good, all powerful, all loving, or all just. g. The creature cannot say such things to the creator. h. His ways are above our ways, His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. i. When we think God has done something unjust… it is because our definition of justice is NOT God's. j. When we think God has done something unloving… it is because our definition of love is NOT God's. k. When we think that God has done something that is not good… it is because our definition of good is NOT God's. l. When we wonder why God didn't do something to prevent catastrophe… it is because we have put God in a box and treated Him as if He is like us… We have made an idol, called it Yahweh, and gotten upset when that fake god doesn't do what we think he should. m. We must repent… not Him. n. God is unchangeable. He does not lie. He does not sin. He is the same as He always has been. o. If life stinks, and catastrophe happens… our conclusion CANNOT be… That God has failed, or that God is a liar. p. This is the height of arrogance and idolatry. q. So what must we believe instead? 2.) Mind Transformation: “What truth must we believe from this text?” or “What might we not naturally believe that we must believe because of what this text has said?” We must affirm that God providentially allows natural forces to oppose His people. a. God is absolutely free in His will to act according to His counsel. He has full freedom to do as He wishes and as He permits to ALL of His creation – including men. b. In His grace, His mercy, and His love – God does not desire the death of the wicked. c. That is a completely BONKERS statement. Of all the people that we should think God would be hunting down and squashing out of existence it SHOULD BE… the wicked. d. God is just… and He will judge them for their sin… But God does not actively seek out and kill wicked men. Why? Because we'd all be dead already. e. And here is another Bonkers statement in the scriptures… f. God's Son guaranteed that any who would follow Him would experience trouble. Jesus does not qualify that statement by specifying what trouble we experience. i. Is the trouble from those who might hate us and persecute us? ii. Is the trouble in the daily walk in living holy lives and turning from sin? iii. Is the trouble the common aches and pains and problems that all men face? g. Based on the entire cannon of scripture I think we'd have to say… YES! All of those. h. The scriptures say that all of creation groans in anticipation of the return of Jesus, the King of glory. i. Do you think violent storms that destroy property and lives are part of the creation's groans? ii. Do you think that diseases and sicknesses, aches and pains are part of the creation's groans? iii. Do you think that violent and wicked acts of men to snuff out life are part of creation's groans? i. My friends… God allows forces of nature to oppose all men, including His people, as a sign to us that things ARE NOT AS THEY SHOULD BE! j. When we experience heartache and trouble and problems and pain it should confirm upon us the blessed hope of our King's inevitable return to make all this right! k. If God always saved His people from calamity in miraculous ways… how strong would our faith be? l. Let me ask another question… If you always lifted everything for your child, including the spoon to their mouths, how much muscle would be on their arms? m. Were they called to lift a baby off the railroad tracks to save its life… they would struggle and strain and all would be lost. n. God knows we grow through adversity. We grow through struggle and pain. Not because He made us that way… but because sin has corrupted us THAT MUCH. o. The depravity of man is not some soteriological belief that only impacts us prior to conversion. p. My friends… sanctification – our growth to be more like Christ is long, difficult, fraught with pain and setbacks BECAUSE OF DEPRAVITY! q. The reformers believed and the scriptures agree that we are simultaneously WICKED SINNERS who have been declared righteous in Christ. We are all recovering pagans whose hearts continue to be factories forming idols on a daily basis. r. Therefore, we must believe that God sovereignly and providentially uses even natural disaster… to accomplish His will. Because His will is not ours. s. So what do we do with that? 3.) Exhortation: “What actions should we take?” or “What is this passage specifically commanding us to do that we don't naturally do or aren't currently doing?” We must continue to trust the Lord. a. Our God has promised that He will never leave us. b. He has promised us that He will seal us until the day of redemption with His Spirit. c. He has promised that He will give grace in a time of need to those who seek it. d. He has promised that He will sustain us to the moment that we have been appointed to die. e. He has promised to raise us up in Christ to join Him in the clouds. f. He has promised that when we join Him there we will always be with Him. g. So we face shipwreck. So we face wicked men shooting at us. So we face disease. So we face loss. So we face death. But we do so, knowing, that God will never forsake the promises He has made to us. We have confidence that if we face these things… God has willed it to be so for some purpose that we may never know. h. We trust Him. i. Trusting Christ does not mean trusting in a list of facts about God. j. Trusting Christ means that when tragedy occurs… we praise the Lord and trust that He is faithful. k. What else should we do? 4.) Exhortation: “What actions should we take?” or “What is this passage specifically commanding us to do that we don't naturally do or aren't currently doing?” We must heed the counsel of wise and godly people. a. Friends, although we have the Spirit of God in us, although Jesus has promised to never leave or forsake us, and although God in three persons is always present everywhere and when… somehow He knew that that would not be enough for our frailty. b. He knows our weakness indeed. c. And He has given us gifts… i. Apostles to form the church 2000 years ago. ii. Prophets to guide the church in its formation iii. Evangelists to expand the kingdom to the uttermost parts of the earth iv. And pastors/shepherds/ Elders to spiritually care for and equip the church locally to do the work of the ministry which is the edification of the body of Christ. d. In addition to that he has given generational mandates to older believers to care for younger believers and counsel and admonish them in spiritual things. e. He has given fathers to spiritually grow their own children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. f. He has given all of God's people His Spirit and promises where two or more are gathered and seeking counsel on some of the most difficult things… He is there. g. My friends… when catastrophe surrounds us. When trouble comes. When hope is fading. When we don't know if we can go on. When we don't know what to do. h. God has given us… the church. i. Not perfect. Flawed. But spiritually maturing and matured people who love and live by God's Word. j. Don't buy into the lie that you must see a specialist in the field of your problems to get help. k. If your problems are medical, financial, relational, emotional… and yes… spiritual… You can rest assured that God's word has something to say about it. And wise and godly believers can help you find it and help you pursue it. 5.) Evangelism: “What about this text points us to Jesus Christ, the gospel, and how we are restored?” Repenting of sin and becoming God's child does not give you a life of peace. In fact, it guarantees you a life of hardship. a. There are gospels going out today that seem to assure you that when you pray a prayer your life will be so much better. b. I just saw that MMA fighter Conner McGreggor recently made some kind of profession of faith in Jesus. He stated Jesus is King and that he has never been so at peace since believing this. c. I don't know his heart. I hope he is God's child. Time will tell. d. But here is what I do know. There is a paradox in the Christian life that all outsiders must see before they seek to enter in. e. Although in one sense being a child of God is the most peaceful, wonderful, glorious, amazing, fulfilling, and satisfying things there is… f. In another sense it is a life full of pain, anguish, struggle, hardship, betrayal, failure, frustration, and rejection. And not just in the sense that it is the normal human experience… but beyond that… being a Christian is directly linked to MORE of these than if you were not a Christian. g. Every single Christian in this room affirms this paradox as true. They have lived it. God's word says it. h. Jesus tells everyone to count the cost. He says that the only way to be His disciple is to take yourself, your desires, your comfort, your plans, your lifestyles, your money, your peace, your hope… and nail it to a cross… kill it brutally. Then follow Him. Then… and only then… can you be His disciple. i. He has paid it all… but make no mistake… it will cost you everything. And to true Christians it is a price… we gladly pay. j. If you have counted the cost and desire to follow Jesus, the Elders in this church would love to talk to you about that. Come see us… and don't dilly dally about it. Let me close with a word of prayer from the Apostolic Constitutions Lord God Almighty and true God, nothing compares to you. You are everywhere, and present in all things, but you are not part of your creation. You are not bound by place, and you do not grow old in time. You are not terminated by the ages. You are not deceived by words, and not created by anything. You require no one to look after you, and you are above all corruption. You are free from change, and by nature you never vary. You inhabit inaccessible light. You are invisible by nature, but are known to all thinking people who seek you with a good mind-your people who truly see and who have believed on Christ. You are the God of Israel. Be gracious to me, and hear me, for the sake of your name. Bless those who bow before you, and grant them the requests of their hearts, for their good. Do not reject any of them from your kingdom. Instead, set them apart for you. Guard, cover, and help them. Deliver them from the adversary, and from every enemy. Keep their houses and families safe, and guard them as they come and go. For to you belongs the glory, praise, majesty, worship, and adoration, and to your Son Jesus, your Christ, our Lord and God and King, and to the Holy Spirit, now and always, forever and ever, amen. Benediction: May the One Who makes the vapors ascend in clouds from earth's remotest end, Whose lightings flash at His commands, Who holds the tempest in His hands. Keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Until we meet again, go in peace.
What if everything you thought you knew about the devil was wrong?
Many of us have experienced how, when humans given more power than usual over other humans in a vulnerable position, they are typically very reluctant to give it back up. They like have despotic control. Not God.Music Credit: J. S. Bach, “Wir eilen mit schwachen, doch emsigen Schritten,” aria from “Jesu, der du meine Seele,” BWV 78 (Leipzig, 1724).
What do you think would happen to our economy, our country, if all the working Christians decided to “go into ministry”? There would be no “marketplace”, our economy would collapse and we would be thrown into chaos. Could it be that is NOT God's plan or design for us? What if each of us were CALLED TO MINISTRY IN OUR WORK, right where we're planted? And that OUR JOB IS our pulpit, our work performance then becomes our Christ-like message and our co-workers our “congregation”. Now THAT'S a powerful realistic vision for building the Kingdom. James 2:14 What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don't show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? How will YOU SHIFT your work to be a ministry TODAY?
Intro:Good morning! We're navigating a tough week, having just hosted a funeral for Drew Hall, deeply loved in our community, who passed away in a climbing accident. Our hearts are with his wife and daughters. Next week, our Exeter church family, who we just prayed off, joins us for baptisms – this is the life of the church: joy and sorrow, but Jesus is always with us. Today, we delve into listening, a profound theme from Proverbs.Scripture References: Proverbs 2:1-5, Proverbs 5:1-2, Proverbs 22:17, Proverbs 13:1, Proverbs 15:31-32, Proverbs 4:20, Proverbs 5:1, Genesis 1, Psalm 33:6, Deuteronomy 6, Genesis 21:17, Proverbs 15:29, Luke 24:25-32Key Points:God Is Always Speaking, Calling Us to Listen:Proverbs emphasizes God's constant communication, urging us to be attentive listeners. The Seattle School of Theology's daily "chime" ritual reminds students their work is done in the presence of a living, speaking God.Listening for Wisdom and Instruction:Proverbs consistently calls us to listen for knowledge and understanding (Proverbs 2:1-5, 5:1-2, 22:17).It also stresses receiving instruction and discipline (Proverbs 13:1, 15:31-32). Embracing God's loving discipline transforms us.Proverbs' urgent tone (e.g., Proverbs 4:20, 5:1) highlights the gravity of listening to God's words. It's the single most important thing we can learn.Listening in God's Grand Story:Creation: From Genesis 1 ("Let there be light"), God speaks first. Our design is to listen and respond. Keith Anderson notes God's voice in creation is the first evidence of His love. Intentional listening means emptying our agenda, being curious, and present. Grab a "Five Ways to Practice Listening" card at the connect table!Old Testament (Shema): Deuteronomy 6 commands, "Listen, O Israel... love the Lord your God." Listening precedes loving. God's listening (e.g., Hagar and Ishmael in Genesis 21:17) isn't for His knowing, but to express His love, care, and that we are known (Proverbs 15:29). What He hears is never a barrier to His love.Jesus' Incarnation: Jesus often said, "Let anyone who has ears hear." The Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:25-32) shows disciples, disillusioned by Christ's crucifixion, unknowingly walking with Jesus. As He spoke, their hearts "burned." Encountering Jesus opens our ears and hearts to God's voice. Proximity to Jesus happens in simple, earthy ways (walking, sharing a meal, being with companions). The Problem is Connection, Not God's Speaking:Like the story of Pete Gregg unknowingly broadcasting his podcast, God is always speaking. The problem is often our connection.Busyness, disappointment, a cold heart, or distance from Jesus can hinder our listening. Our job is to approach God with intentionality, love, and closeness to Jesus. Conclusion:Our ability to listen to God is foundational. From creation to Jesus, God's story shows He actively speaks and listens out of love. This security allows us to confidently listen to Him.Call to Action:As we come to the table, remember Christ's presence bridges all distance. If your heart feels cold, or you need to know God hears you, pray with us. We'll worship and take communion, remembering Jesus, who perfectly embodied listening and drew close to us, offering new life. Be responsive to prayer; we want to connect you to Jesus. Psalm 93,The Lord reigns; he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed; he has put on strength as his belt.Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.2 Your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.3 The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their roaring.4 Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the Lord on high is mighty!5 Your decrees are very trustworthy; holiness befits your house, O Lord, forevermore. Most mornings in the Schumann household start out the same way. Following time in the word, we make a round of toast with peanut butter and honey for everyone at the table. Next, if it's nice, we go outside for a walk or scooter ride around the block. After that, I get ready for work, grab my lunch, and then right before leaving, ask each of our kids three questions. They are the exact same questions every single morning.Who is the king of the world?Who are the king's people? And, What is better than being the king's people?Just about every morning in our house starts out this way and has now for quite some time. There are easier, simpler ways we start out a morning. For one, we could just skip the questions. I mean, the same three questions every single morning? Is that really necessary? Is that really worth slowing your progress out the door? I think it is. And the reason I think that is because none of us ever truly knows what the day ahead of us is really going to bring — it may be a whole set of circumstances that leave you feeling completely disorienting. Significantly unsteadied. Life can tend to do that kind of thing, you know. It can tend to knock-us-off-balance just when we're least expecting it. Each day carries with it the potential for quite the barrage of disorienting experiences: A suddenly fractured friendship you thought would stand the test of time, shocking news of a failed marriage you believed stood as solid as a pillar, an unforeseen illness in place of ongoing health, an unexpected accident in place of continued safety, loss of trust in someone you had thought trustworthy, or loss of life in someone you had thought invincible.Life can be disorienting. Any given day can leave you feeling turned totally upside down. And that's why, coffee in hand, backpack on shoulders, about to head to work, I ask our kids the questions: Who is the king of the world?Who are the king's people? And, What is better than being the king's people? And then, I listen for the answers we've taught them. Who is the king of the world? God is the king of the world.Who are the king's people? We are the king's people. And, What is better than being the king's people? There is nothing better than being the king's people. That is the message I hope to give my kids every single morning, and it is the message I believe Psalm 93 aims to give us this morning. Cities Church: God is the king of the world. Psalm 93 invites us to anchor ourselves to that truth, that we might be able to ride out all life's disorienting storms.Let's pray and ask for God's help before going any further. King Over the WorldSo, Psalm 93 — God is king over the world. More specifically, God is king over the world's future, its floods, it's faithful. Let's begin with what it means for God to be king more generally, then we'll consider his kingship over the future, floods, and faithful. So, God is king over the world. Beginning with verse one:“the Lord reigns.” The Lord reigns. He reigns. He does not merely manage or supervise — he reigns. As a verb, reign pertains to the realm of royalty. Reigning involves sitting upon a throne, wielding complete authority, and bearing the title “king.”And, this is something God does by right, for his kingly throne is “from of old.” Verse 2,“Your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.”So, verse one, God is king, and, verse two, his status as king is no new thing. He is king and he has been king, and there has never been a time, or a world, in which God was not King.Go ahead, take all of reality, all that has ever been, bind it all together into a single book. Turn to its very last pages and then start flipping backward. You'll just keep seeing it over and over again — God seated upon a throne. Brothers and sisters, the empires of our world are as a blink of an eye compared to the reign of God. Entire royal lines — a snap of the fingers. The timeline of the universe is the timeline of God's reign. So, God is king. God reigns as king, and he does so, still verse one, “robed in majesty.”“The Lord reigns; he is robed in majesty;” You've all seen movies or books where ancient kings have been depicted. Sometimes they're clothed in garments of purple laced with gold, or a cloak of red with white and black-dotted collar. King Aragorn kind of ends up with this cool black cloak with the white tree insignia — that one's pretty cool. Take all those images together, the basic idea is the same: kings set themselves apart from others by way of clothing. They choose, from all the finest clothing in the land, garments to signify their unique position. They adorn themselves, and they do so with articles of clothing that are exterior, outside themselves. The image here of God, the true High King, is similar — but not the same. Verse one describes the Great King's attire, but with one major difference. Here, it seems the Lord, the true reigning King, does not go looking for something exterior himself to wear. He doesn't go searching for outward, purchasable splendor. Rather, it seems he possesses within himself an inherent majesty, inherent greatness, which emanates out from him so real and so palpable that it is to him his robe.In other words, he's robed not in the majesty of man. Majesty is his very essence. He is what it means to be majestic. We see much of the same in terms of his belt. The text reads, still verse one,“He has put on strength as his belt.”Now, remember, we're talking about God here. God who does not borrow strength from elsewhere. Does not increase in strength, as if some form of it could even exist outside of him. He's what all forms of strength depend upon. And so when we read, God has put on strength, or God has robed himself in majesty, I believe we are meant to understand it as not suggesting God is adding anything to himself, but rather that God is revealing something of himself to us. Put another way: His putting on of strength, robing himself with majesty is simply what God looks like, from our angle, whenever he reveals himself to us.Brothers and sisters: God is king over the world. And, more specifically, God is king over the future of the world. King Over the FutureTake another look at verses one and two, and notice what's sandwiched between the words on God's kingship. See it with me, on one side of the sandwich, verse one:“The Lord reigns; he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed; he has put on strength as his belt.”All thoroughly Godward statements, yes? All concerning God's kingship. On the other side, verse 2:“Your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.”Again, thoroughly Godward statements. All concerning God's kingship. But then, in the middle, a statement that doesn't immediately seem to fit. End of verse one:“Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.”Nothing thoroughly Godward here, right? The world is what's in view. Not God's kingship, but the world and the promise that it shall never be moved. Now, how does that fit here? What is the connection? God, God, God on one side. God, God, God on the other. Earth sandwiched in the middle. I think the point is this: We don't know what tomorrow will look like for our world, do we? We don't know the world's future. From a purely scientific angle, it doesn't look great. Think about it: We are literally standing on a ball, that's currently hurling through space, and held in the orbit of an even bigger ball, that's burning like a furnace, so massive and so powerful, that it makes nuclear reactors look like candle sticks. Will the sun go out tomorrow? Will the earth erode? Will a gigantic asteroid smash into us and break our planet in two? Will food run scarce? Will the waters dry up? Will the temperature rise too high? What will the future of our world hold? Any future at all?Psalm 93:“Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.”And the reason it won't ever be moved is because God is king over its future. He is king over the world's tomorrow. The world does not exist independently from God. The world is not a clock simply wound up by God and left to tick away on its own.God has told us his son is coming back to this world. God has told us he is going to free this world from its bondage to decay. Till he does, he has also told us his Son is the one who upholds the universe by the word of his power (Heb. 1:3). God is not going to let this world turn to dust. Psalm 93: “Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.” God is king over the future of the world. You feel flipped upside down by certain reports in the news. You feel disoriented, confused, by the possibility of chaos or catastrophe. Take heart, God is king over the future of the world. No one gets to decide what tomorrow will bring save him.God is king over the future of the world. And, God is King over the floods of the world.King Over the FloodsVerse 3,“The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their roaring.”Certainly seems significant, given recent events. Last I read, the death count from the recent flooding in Texas has reached 134 people. The floods have certainly lifted up their roaring, and it's not the first time. Now its true, the term “floods” here could also be translated as rivers. NIV has “seas.” So we want to be careful here to not interpret this too narrowly. Waters is the idea. Bodies of water. Whether in the form of an ocean threatening deep sea fishing boats far from land, or a rising tide that breaks over embankments and floods into a city. Bodies of water, and all the potential energy amassed within them — that's the idea here. And in the ancient world, these bodies of waters were regularly feared as extremely threatening and unpredictable. Thought by many to be the realm of worldly chaos. In fact, so threatening, unpredictable, and chaotic were these bodies of water that the term itself — whether rivers, waters, or floods — became synonymous for enemy nations.Isaiah 8:7, with regard to Assyria:“The Lord is bringing up against them the waters of the River, mighty and many, the king of Assyria and all his glory. And it will rise over all its channels and go over all its banks,”Jeremiah 46:7, with regard to Egypt:“Who is this, rising like the Nile, like rivers whose waters surge? Egypt rises like the Nile, like rivers whose waters surge.”Revelation 12:15, with regard to Satan himself:“The serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with a flood.”So, floods here, could mean literal floods, like that which recently swept over parts of Texas. Or it could mean figurative floods, like warring nations that have swept over our world. Truth be told, I think both are in mind here in Psalm 93, because what follows is just as true concerning both. See it with me, verse 4: “Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the Lord on high is mighty!”God is king over the world's floods — it's literal floods (think Noah and the Ark) as well as its figurative floods (think Egypt's watery grave). God is king, and can be king, over the world's floods because he is mightier than they. His power far exceeds their own. The floods are to him as freshly poured tar upon the road, where he is to them the steamroller. He drives his will right on through without the least degree of resistance.Does he, at times, allow the floods to wreak havoc? Yes, according to his all-knowing, loving, and perfect wisdom, he does. But that's the key word, allows. And the moment he stops allowing, the floods must cease. Jesus slept for a time in the boat, yes? The waves crashed, the waters roared. But when Jesus woke, and spoke: “quiet, be still.” The waves were forced to bow to him. Our Psalm 93 king is mightier than the floods. Friends, no matter how out-of-control things look. No matter how in-control the enemy may seem to be. In seasons of disorientation and confusion, step away from the tilt-a-whirl of circumstances. And steady yourself upon the truth that God is king over the floods of the world.Anchor yourself to that truth, and ride out the storm from there. God is king over the floods of the world.Lastly, God is king over the faithful of the world.King Over the FaithfulVerse 5:“Your decrees are very trustworthy; holiness befits your house, O Lord, forevermore.”Key terms here — decrees, think Laws. And House, think household, or family. In other words, what's in view here is the church. The faithful who are in Christ. After all, it is we who are the members of his house, “holiness befits your house.” It is we who are the possessors of his decrees, “Your decrees are very trustworthy.” We, the church, the faithful in Christ, we are in view here. Which means, God is king over us as well. God is king over the faithful of the world. And I want us to really think for a moment about what that means. God is king over us. Kings, as we said, sit upon a throne. They wield complete authority. They reign. And as they do, their citizens do what? They obey. They submit. They endeavor to do what the king tells them.In the church, we call Jesus our friend, and we should, because Jesus first called us his friend (John 15:15).We call Jesus our Good Shepherd, and we're right to, because Jesus told us that's who he is (John 10:11).We call the Father our Father, because Jesus invites us to call him Father (Matt. 6:9).We call Jesus our Savior because that's just what he came to — save us from our sin (Matthew 1:21). We call Jesus, Jesus, because though fully God, he also became fully human, even to the point of taking on a human name, Jesus. How often do we call Jesus king? How often do we call him king and really mean it? To call Jesus king means you intend to submit to him, right? You intent to obey him. You intend to abide by the rules of his kingdom. Are you winking at any of King Jesus' commands in this season? Are you taking lightly any of King Jesus' words? Friends, in all our love for, nearness to, and enjoyment of Jesus, don't forget, this same Jesus is also King. A King deserving of our obedience to him.DecreesAnd now, two quick words concerning your King: First, verse 5, his decrees are very trustworthy. Speaking to the king,“Your decrees [think testimony, Law — the words of this book he's given us called the Bible] are very trustworthy.”His decrees are very reliable. And that's important, because his word is also very challenging, “better to pluck out your eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell.” Pluck out my eye? Am I really to take sin that seriously? His word is also not always intuitive, “whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Matthew 16:25). Really, I have to lose it, to find it? How can that be? His word is also humbling, “no one is righteous, no not one.” Ouch. Self-help books don't talk that way. His word is also very candid and to the point, “Here you have no lasting city.” Phew, kind of sobers you to reality just a bit, huh.So, given the challenging, not always intuitive, humbling, and to-the-point nature of God's word, we could tend to find ourselves sifting through it a bit, don't you think? Customizing it — I like this part, not that part. But these are not the words of a common citizen. Advice from the guy on the corner to either be taken or dismissed. They are the words of your King. And your king is telling you that they are very worth your trusting them. The world would have you to doubt God's word. Your sin would have you ignore it. Follow the king's word. Submit to it by faith. His decrees are very worth your trust.HolinessSecond, and lastly, holiness befits his house. Speaking to him in verse 5, “Holiness befits your house.”Whether his kingdom in heaven, his church here on earth. Holiness befits his house. And, look, this ought to be such a relief. Such an encouragement. I mean, a King can be a frightening thing. All that power, handed over to one single person? Turn the pages of history, human kings have wreaked havoc on the world. There's a reason most countries don't want them anymore. But, here's good news of a good King. One who is purely, perfectly, unchangeably holy. A king who is set apart and entirely untouched by sin, unmarred by evil, unendingly good.“Holiness befits your house.”You need not ever fear this King acting capriciously, selfishly, or deceptively like human kings. This King has no sin for you to worry about. He is radiant in holiness and it decks the walls of his house. No sin or evil ever touches this king. And the fact that holiness befits his house, means that everyone he calls near to it, he too makes holy. 1 Peter 2:9,“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation,”Christian, God has made you holy, that he might bring you near. So, be holy, because you're headed to his house in heaven. And, don't miss this, be holy now, because you are his house on earth. 1 Cor. 3:17,“If anyone destroys God's temple [God's house], God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple.”Holiness befits his house. You are that house. Therefore, be holy.Application for you: What is one step you can take today toward greater holiness? One sinful habit you can drop. One godless activity you can quit. One decision by which you can say, “God, you've made me holy by your Son, you've called me to live holy in this world. You are my king, and as a member of your household, I will choose holiness here. What is here for you this morning?Christian, we've got good news about a good king. It's news we can anchor our souls to in the midst of stormy weather and disorienting seasons.Who is the king of the world? God is the king of the world.Who are the king's people? We are the king's people. And, What's better than being the king's people? There is nothing better than being the king's people. The TableNow, what brings us to the table this morning is the fact that none of us here deserve to be the king's people. Had the king done nothing, and we continued in our sin just as before, we could expect nothing but rightful judgment from him. But, King Jesus did, in fact, do something. He left heaven, came to earth, took on the form of a servant, was mocked, beaten, scorned, and then hung upon a cross to die for us. Our King purchased our citizenship into his kingdom, by his life, death, and resurrection. So, because that's what this table represent, if you're here today and you've trusted in Jesus as your Savior King by faith, then we invite you to take and eat with us. If you've not put your trust in Jesus, we ask that you'd let the bread and cup pass, and in this moment, turn from your trust in all other things, give your full allegiance to Jesus. Say “Jesus, be my king.”

Jesus knew that His people would struggle with staying together. When we quarrel with other Christians over trivial matters, we look just like the divided world around us. The Bible teaches that there are times when divisions are necessary, and we need the courage to separate when it is for God's glory. But may we only separate from professing Christians when the Bible tells us to do so. As the High Priestly Prayer concludes, Jesus reiterates His theme: our Union with Him. His earnest prayer throughout has been that we be united with Him. When we are united with Christ and with His people, a divided world takes notice. Take-Home Message: The Lord's greatest prayer reveals His greatest priorities. Jesus Prays for Our Unity with Believers (20-23). So we find that in this first resurrection, the believers escapes judgment, which is the second death. 'cause we're all going to stand before God one day, whether you accepted Christ in this life. Or whether you didn't accept Christ in this life. As a believer, when you stand before God in the next life, he will say, "Well, done, good and faithful servant." Because Christ is your advocate, because you gave your life to Christ, you can pass through, and you could live in eternal bliss with God forever, but for those that fail to receive Christ in this life. You will still have to acknowledge that Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. But because you didn't accept it in this life. You will experience the consequences of your decision in the next life. Not God's desire, not what God wants. But a faithful judge with you'll be faithful, and he will give you what you choose. If you want to choose to kill someone, you're going to go to jail. If it is a faithful judge, if you choose not to embrace God's means of salvation. He will give you what you want. Though it pains him to do it. He will give you what you want and you will receive the fruit of that decision. Which is eternal life in hell in the Lake of Fire? You will get what you choose, but I want you to know, it is not God's desire for your life. That's why God sends people like me like believers to tell you about Christ to preach to you. The good news of salvation is that it is efficient. So you can know what is real. You can know God's desire for your life. And having experienced the good news. You can embrace God's offer of salvation, and you can receive Christ and never have to worry about the second death. We can hold on to His promise of resurrection life
THE SEVEN Seven souls. One final chance for humanity. In a divine test that will determine mankind's fate, seven individuals from across the globe are chosen to represent humanity. Their judges? Not God, not angels, but the creatures who have served mankind since the dawn of civilization - horses. These majestic beings have carried humans through history, and now they must decide if humanity deserves to continue its journey. This profound tale explores the deep connection between humans and animals, the choices that define us, and the ultimate question: Has humanity strayed too far from its purpose to be saved? "The Seven" is a powerful story of redemption, second chances, and the extraordinary bond between humans and the creatures who know our hearts better than we know ourselves. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Alison Gieschen is an award-winning author, lifelong sailor, and horsewoman whose life story is as epic as the novels she writes. A former schoolteacher and graduate of the University of North Carolina Charlotte, Alison spent 30 years running an internationally successful equestrian program on her family farm in New Jersey. After raising three children with her husband Dan—whom she met during a sailboat race—they sold everything they owned to pursue their shared dream of circumnavigating the globe aboard their 43-foot sailboat. To date, Alison and Dan have traveled to 46 countries and recently crossed the Panama Canal, setting their course for the remote islands of French Polynesia. Her time at sea and her deep connection with both horses and people across cultures have inspired a powerful body of work spanning children's literature, memoir, and adult fiction. Her books include the Rising Star Award-winning novel Blue Ridge, the magical children's stories The Legend of Altor and Julia's Vaulting Dream, and the nonfiction sailing memoir Riding the Waves of Reality: Tales of Turmoil and Triumph—with a sequel on the way. Her latest release, The Seven, is a sweeping and soul-stirring novel that blends fantasy with deeply rooted real-world experience. The story follows seven humans and seven horses in a tale that spans continents and cultures, asking one pivotal question: Can the hearts of a few determine the fate of all humanity? Alison is also preparing to release her newest children's fantasy, Seanna: A Mermaid's Tale—a story especially close to her heart. As someone who has always felt a magical connection to the sea and its mythical creatures, Alison brings the underwater world to life in this early reader chapter book. The story is being brought to even greater life through the artwork of seven-time international award-winning illustrator Barbara Owczarek, whose stunning illustrations add an extra layer of magic and wonder. Through it all, Alison remains deeply connected to the world around her—from the sea life off her bow to the ancient cultures in the world's most remote places. Her journey is far from over, and with every mile sailed, a new story is waiting to be told. Learn more at https://alisongieschen.com. In this episode, we discuss the Ridiculousness that is " Beyonce Mass". A church service- if you want to call it that- where they use the life, career and, Music of Beyonce to celebrate the empowerment of women of Color.... Not God.
This was supposed to be the place. The place where I'd grow. Where I'd feel safe. Where God would feel close. But somewhere along the way, the church became something else—something heavier. In this episode, I reflect on how the desire for connection slowly got replaced by the pressure to conform… and how the church I was born into started to feel less like a community and more like something we worshipped. Not God—but the church itself. And the more I've looked around, the more I've realized: this isn't just a “my church” thing. This kind of idolatry—where we elevate the system, the brand, the building, the leaders—shows up in churches everywhere. This episode isn't about throwing the whole thing away. It's about telling the truth. Because when we start worshiping the place instead of seeking the Presence… We lose what the place was supposed to lead us toward in the first place. If you are a member, were a member, or know someone who was a member of the ICOC or ICC and would like to share your story about life in and out of the church, I'd love to hear from you. Together, we can continue exploring the question, “We were in a cult? Or If this episode stirred something in you, if you've wrestled with what church has meant in your life, or if you just have a story you want to share, I'd love to hear from you. Hey there, hello to you today and welcome to this episode of The Burt (Not Ernie) Show, where we look at what God has promised His people in the Bible, and we live like those promises are true… and thank God, they are! Biblical Motherhood Pinterest Board You're listening to The Burt (Not Ernie) Show, featured on the Edifi app and on iHeart radio. Today's episode is all about God's promise to give us peace, and more specifically, perfect peace, as it says in Isaiah 26, verse 3. And this is episode number 206. Isaiah is a large book in the Old Testament. 66 chapters, I believe, and it covers a lot of ground. It is a record of the history of Israel and Judah, it is very prophetic - about specific nations and people groups and what would happen, at times even to the day, as we see in parts of Isaiah 18, that chapter comes to mind, and other portions of the book are exactingly specific, as well. And of course, about Jesus' birth and life and death and resurrection, it holds so many prophecies that have indeed proved true, exactly true, to perfection. And then, of course, it holds a lot of prophecy about His second coming, His return that will be the most incredible event this world has ever seen. Sometimes a book the size and the depth of Isaiah can be almost intimidating to read, overwhelming in it's scope, some parts are historical record, and they read like much of the Old Testament does in Judges or 1 Samuel or the book of Ruth or Esther. But it is intermingled with these astounding portions that are not at all like reading through the book of Ruth or Judges. And we may shy away from it, because it is, frankly, a lot and we might feel like we're not learned enough or qualified to really understand it. But is that a good reason to not read it? I don't think so. God gives us such incredible promises in the book of Isaiah, and I do not think He made those promises so that we would never know them, let alone believe Him for them. Nope. That would not make sense. And a book that has so many powerful promises for us, a book that has been so spot on accurate regarding Jesus' life on earth, well, that's a very hopeful, hope-filled book. And we just don't want to miss what it has to say to us. Which is why we're going to look at one verse, one topic or theme, from the pages of Isaiah in this episode. You know, to get to the 206th episode of a podcast takes a bit of time, and as this show is focused on God's promises, I have spent a fair amount of time the last few years reading and thinking about and writing about (as in the podcast show notes and my personal study time) and talking about so many of God's promises for His dearly loved children (which is what we are, according to 1 John chapter 3, verse 1). And I have yet to be moved off my stance that all His promises are true. Ya know, you get the comments from people on different platforms when clips from the show are shared, and people can say things that are really heart wrenching to read…not what they say about me, because who cares, right? But also, usually what they say is about the Lord, and that is what's heart wrenching. Maybe they've experienced serious hurt or disappointment, maybe they just have no idea who God is or how much He loves them, maybe something else entirely. But those comments don't move my needle regarding my belief in who my God is for me personally and as a whole, to all who will come to Him. It moves my needle with heartbreak but not my belief. In thinking about this, the comments and what's possibly behind those comments, well I wonder if some of those commenters are lacking peace, maybe? It's a hard life, in a dark world, for a million different reasons in every stage and season. Inner peace, inner security, that's missing in so many lives. The verse from Isaiah that talks about perfect peace, that's the verse that comes to mind. And that's the verse I'm sharing with you as one of God's most beautiful, life-giving promises in this episode. You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, all whose thoughts are fixed on You. That's what Isaiah 26:3 says in the New Living Translation. It's a hefty promise, and as always, our God does nothing but deliver on this. Does that mean we never have to pause, do a reset, pray, seek His peace, remind one another of verses like this, ponder the fact that Jesus said in this world we will have trouble but we are to take heart, He has overcome the world and that His peace He gives to us, His peace He leaves with us, but not the world's peace. His peace. It's a different kind of peace. It's sitting in the doctor's office getting really awful news, but you have an inner calm and peace that is so rock solid, you're able to not endure that hard moment but rather, not be shaken by it. It's a prodigal's parent able to fully trust in the Lord and have peace, not be up all night fretting, overcome with dread, jumping at every shadow because the stress level is so high…but having peace right in the middle of the terrible awful disaster of a mess. That's not the world's version of peace. It's beyond the bounds of this world, and I am so thankful that God has promised this peace, perfect peace, to us. Let me read Isaiah 26:3 from the Amplified now. You will keep in perfect and constant peace the one whose mind is steadfast (that is, committed and focused on You - in both inclination and character), because he trusts and takes refuge in You (with hope and confident expectation). That adds some depth to the promise. Perfect and constant peace…that's what I'm looking for, and I'll find it when I look for it in Christ Jesus. A steadfast mind, well that sounds pretty good to me. Committed to and focused on the Lord, in all things all of the time. That is an amazing way to live. To have my character so impacted by my trust in God that every inclination I have is aligned toward Him. And why is this promise going to prove true for me and for you? Because we trust the Lord, and we take refuge in Him when life gets hard and we're under attack or under pressure or facing peril or heartbreak or grief of simply the great unknown. We take refuge in our God in those moments not in a disassociated way, we don't deny the difficult things in life, but in hope and in confident expectation. That's perfect peace. That's your promise. Now let me share something I read from a missionary to China had to say about how Chinese believers, followers of Jesus, how they read this verse: Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind stops at God. Let that sink in for a moment. Can I repeat that? I feel like it's too awesome to only say one time. Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind stops at God. In the midst of your troubles, when those scary scenarios start to swamp your thoughts, and thus swamp your life, because where our thoughts go, there our lives go… in those moments, can you and I choose to let our mind STOP at God? Is this possibly what it means to be still and know that He is God? I think so. But this happened and then this might happen next and then it may snowball into this, that and the other… But what if my mind stops at God? But this happened, and He is God. Not God of some things, not God now and then, hit and miss, here and there. He is God. Period. My mind, that's where it stops. At God. Nothing is greater than our God. Nobody pulls a fast one on our God. Nothing gets past Him. Nothing lets Him down, because nothing holds Him up. He holds all things together, Colossians tells us about the Lord. All things. Nothing left out. Shalom peace, nothing missing, nothing broken. He will keep you in perfect peace when your mind stops at God. That's it for this episode, and I'm so glad you were able to listen today. The highest compliment you could give the show is to share it with a friend. And just on the off chance that somebody might want to hear this, I am working on a Biblical Motherhood project and I have started a Pinterest board where I share some of my content, but also I Pin lots of encouraging content that falls under into the category of Biblical motherhood. If you are a mother or know a mom who would like some encouragement from a Bible based perspective, right here in the show notes is a link to that on Pinterest. Lord bless you today, and hold your peace and let your mind stop at God today. See you next time. Bye bye.

Macie Stewart, half of the Chicago-based duo Finom, is one of those musicians who can do almost anything. She's a classical pianist and violinist who wrote her first piece for an orchestra at age 11 and still creates string arrangements, such as on her 2021 solo album Mouth Full of Glass. She also taught herself acoustic guitar and began writing songs on it when she was 13. When she finally picked up an electric guitar, she and fellow singer-songwriter-guitarist Sima Cunningham formed an experimental side project that has blossomed into Finom, which released one of 2024's best albums, Not God. What distinguishes what Stewart writes for Finom and herself? What telltale characteristics do Stewart and Cunningham each bring to Finom songs? How did Jeff Tweedy push them in the studio? And what drives Stewart's creativity? (Photo by Shannon Marks.)
It has been observed that no people in history have had ever had more possessions, better health, or greater freedom than we, yet we complain about what we don't have. It's almost like many of us are drowning in the rising flood waters of discontent! Guess what; that is NOT God's design for our lives. This month, our teacher, Bob Russell, is unpacking the empowerment of believers, via the Holy Spirit during challenging times, such as when spiritual floodwaters rise. Bob Russell is a retired senior minister of Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Kentucky, where he served for 40 years as Southeast became one of the largest churches in America. Just what would it take to make us content? Perhaps a refocusing of what is important in life and death? Something deeper than just physical things? Well here's Bob Russell to offer a spiritual rescue helicopter so to speak, to lift us out of the Flood of Discontent: To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/326/29

That truth of the incarnation should stop us in our tracks. But something tragic has happened: it has become pedestrian to us, just another decoration along with tinsel and mistletoe. We're numb to the miracle of Christmas. God with us. Not God above us. Not God against us. Not God apart from us. Those we get. Those we expect. Those we dread and suppress. No…the message is God has come down to save us. Join us at GraceLife this Sunday for our Christmas service: God With Us. 10am at the DHS Auditorium. Come early for some Christmas treats!

Patrick Madrid looks into this classic Catholic-Protestant debate over whether Mary is really the Mother of God. And spoiler alert: she totally is. Let's get into it: The Twitter Wars: Catholic vs. Protestant Patrick caught wind of a Catholic account on X/Twitter duking it out with Protestants about Mary. The claim? Mary isn't the Mother of God because God existed before her. But that argument? It misses the point by a mile. Theotokos: Fancy Greek Word, Big Meaning Here's the deal: the term Theotokos (from way back in the Council of Ephesus, 431 A.D.) literally means "God-bearer." It's not just some poetic title. It means Mary bore Jesus, who is fully God and fully man, in her womb. Not "God's incubator," not "divine rental space": she's his MOM. That's the whole point. But How Can Mary Be God's Mom? Here's where some people get stuck: Protestant argument: “Mary's a creature! She can't be the Mother of God because God existed before her.” Catholic truth: Mary didn't give Jesus his divine nature (obviously: she's not divine herself). But she did give birth to a person, and that person is Jesus Christ, who is fully God. So, she's the Mother of God, not because she created God, but because God entered the world through her. Nestorius and His Bad Ideas Back in the day, this guy Nestorius stirred up confusion by claiming Jesus was basically two separate persons: one human, one divine. Wrong. Jesus is one divine person with both a human nature and a divine nature. The Church, through St. Cyril and others, shut down Nestorius's ideas at the Council of Ephesus, making it super clear: the baby Mary gave birth to was God himself. "You Don't Give Birth to a Nature." Patrick made it clear. You give birth to a person, not a nature. Like, when your mom had you, she didn't birth your "human nature": she gave birth to you. Same with Mary. She didn't just give birth to Jesus' human side; she gave birth to Jesus, the person, who happens to be God. Why Does It Matter? This isn't just theological nitpicking. If you get Mary wrong, you probably get Jesus wrong. Getting Jesus wrong messes with the whole incarnation, salvation, and everything else. That's why the Church keeps hammering this home: every generation needs to hear it. Council of Ephesus: Let's Get Serious The council declared: If you don't confess that Mary is the Mother of God (because she bore God-made-flesh), you're in heresy. Why? Because denying Mary's role messes with the whole reality of Jesus being God and man in one person. So yeah, Mary is the Mother of God. Not because she's part of the Trinity or existed before God, but because the child she bore is God in the flesh. Case closed.
Sima Cunningham has had two albums released this year: Not God from Finom, her band with fellow Chicago singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist Macie Stewart; and a long-gestating solo project, High Roller. With Finom kicking off a tour this weekend and a solo album launch and a Roches-themed show coming up, Cunningham is enjoying the culmination of a lifetime of music-making and collaboration. Here she recalls growing up in a musical and artistic household; tells of her sibling-like connection with Stewart and how they find their beautiful, surprising, distinct harmonies; recounts their history with Jeff Tweedy, who produced Not God, and her work with Chance the Rapper, Richard Thompson and Waxahatchee; emphasizes the importance of community; and explains as best as she can why the band had to change its name from Ohmme. Plus, she sings snippets of songs she wrote when she was 11. (Photo by Shannon Marks.)

God has a plan for your friendships. Do you know what that is? Seems silly but most men don't enter into things which could change the course of their lives dramatically without doing a little research first. But when it comes to the men closest to us we tend to have a "go with he flow mentality" as long as we are having fun and no one is getting harmed. This lack of intentionality in community is definitely NOT God's plan. In fact, God's Word is crystal clear with respect to what he wants for your community of buddies who know Jesus and are connected to you -- and it is not as simple as gathering and studying the Bible. It SO MUCH MORE! The bottom line for Christ-centered brotherhood is a willingness to risk in the direction of your identity in Christ and then live that identity out with other men in community as intentionally as possible.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of fantastic songwriters in a sweet conversation about craft and life in general: Sima Cunningham and Roberto Lange. Lange has been making fascinating, lovely music under the name Helado Negro since 2009, mixing breezy indie-rock with electronic sounds, frequently with more than a passing nod to his Ecuadorian roots. His sonic world is always inviting, even as it's sort of otherworldly, and he often matches those sounds with cool visuals—which is no wonder considering his background in computer art. Earlier this year, Lange released the eighth Helado Negro album; it's called Phasor, and it's among his best, mixing tranquil sounds with his searching spirit. You might be lulled and puzzled at the same time, which is a great feeling. Check out the song “Colores del Mar” right here. The other half of today's conversation, Sima Cunningham, is best known as half the core of Chicago band Finom, originally known as OHMME. Finom released its Not God earlier this year, and it's full of unexpected pop turns tied together by the harmony between Cunningham and her longtime musical partner Macie Stewart. But the occasion for today's conversation is actually Cunningham's second solo album, just out on Ruination Records. It's called High Roller, and it explores a more personal side to her songwriter. For example, there's a great song written for Cunningham's brother Liam Kazar, himself a musician and one-time Talkhouse Podcast guest as well. Check out “For Liam” right here. In addition to that song, which Lange points out as a favorite on High Roller, these two chat about Cunningham's adventures in Ireland, what it's like to create an on-stage persona and interact with your audience, and how Cunningham's new album was a 10-year journey that was worth the wait. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 2:40 – Start of the chat 5:56 – Sima's mom is the most punk-rock person in their musical family 14:58 – Roberto on getting to a certain age in music 15:39 – Finding new ways to have a love affair with your audience 22:39 – Sima on figuring out how to be honest and vulnerable with her solo material 29:59 – Sima on playing new Finom songs and trying to figure out where to play solo Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Sima Cunningham and Roberto Lange for chatting. Today, Matt Powell explains to us why he doesn't believe that making a big pile of little things is possible. He might not ever come up with any new arguments, but there's always a new level of idiocy to be found
The message he is required to transmit is, he believes, both universal and eternal. Yet the more he studies sympathetically the world of the young Church as well as his owncontemporary world, the more he feels in despair at making accurate translation. Patterns of thought,Today, Dr. Robert Plummer attempts to answer the question "Is the Bible inerrant or infallible?" And if I'm honest, he leaves us with more questions than he answers, all while trying to paint those who doubt inerrancy as having a view that lacks nuance and critical thought.
