The Entrepreneurial You
How to Publish a Bestseller (Without Getting Scammed) With Michelle DeFilippo

The Entrepreneurial You

Play Episode Listen Later May 20, 2025 32:52

In this episode of The Entrepreneurial You, Heneka Watkis-Porter sits down with publishing industry veteran Michele DeFilippo, founder of 1106 Design. With over 50 years in the book publishing world, Michele brings a wealth of knowledge on how authors can take control of their publishing journey, avoid scams, and profit from their passion. She breaks down the evolution of self-publishing, revealing how independent authors can compete with traditional publishers—and win—by maintaining ownership, setting industry-standard quality, and being smart about their choices. Whether you're a first-time writer or a seasoned author, Michele's guidance provides a blueprint for building a successful, scam-free publishing experience. The Power of Self-Publishing: Profit, Control & Protection Michele is clear: self-publishing isn't just an alternative—it's a business decision. Authors can maintain creative control, keep more of their earnings, and bring their books to market without signing away their rights. But with this freedom comes responsibility. Michele warns against shady hybrid publishers that charge high production fees and still claim a share of your royalties. Her advice? If you're paying for the work, own the outcome—including your files, your ISBNs, and your book's future. Heneka echoes the importance of being informed, noting how many aspiring authors fall victim to scams due to lack of publishing knowledge. Competing With Traditional Publishing: Yes, You Can Michele debunks the myth that self-published books are inferior. With platforms like Amazon KDP and IngramSpark, and a focus on professional-quality design, editing, and typesetting, indie authors can match—and often exceed—the quality of traditional publishers. The key? Following industry standards and never cutting corners. “Readers don't care how a book is published,” Michele says, “only that it's well done.” She urges authors to purchase their own ISBNs through Bowker, which allows them to retain full control over the book in all its formats—eBook, paperback, or hardback. What You'll Learn in This Episode: • How to avoid scams and bad deals in the publishing industry • Why self-publishing can be more profitable and empowering than traditional routes • How to meet traditional publishing standards on your own • Why owning your ISBNs and production files matters • Smart marketing tactics for positioning your book as a business tool • The truth about bestseller programs—and what really drives book success This episode is a must-listen for any aspiring author ready to publish with confidence, clarity, and control. Tune in, take notes, and share it with someone who dreams of becoming a published writer—without the pitfalls. COMMUNITY CONNECTION: Now it's time for our Community Connection segment! You Just Thought Your Home Was Safe By Robert Riggs You lock your doors at night. You check on your kids.  But what if the real threat is already inside—hiding in your phone, your smart TV, or your child's video game chat?  In this episode of True Crime Reporter®, former federal probation officer Art Bowker takes us into the digital battlefield unfolding inside your home. Bowker's book Surviving a Cyberattack: Securing Social Media and Protecting Your Home warns how predators groom teenagers with flattery, how romance scammers bleed retirees dry, and how artificial intelligence is being weaponized to impersonate loved ones. Bowker and his coauthor Todd Shipley call themselves “The Cyber Safety Guys”.  This is the story about how cybercriminals not only bleed their victims but leave them emotionally devastated, isolated, and too ashamed to ask for help.  FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center - (IC3.gov)

Richard Bowker is in conversation with his father Roger Bowker, a legendary transport industry professional who spent 62 years in the bus industry working for Eastern National, Oldham Corporation, SELNEC, Greater Manchester Transport, Rossendale Transport, Eastbourne Buses, London Transport and Stagecoach Group. A pioneer with the industry, Roger Bowker's passion for excellence in service whilst at the same time delivering a profitable business means he is highly respected amongst his peers. The Global Marketing Show
AI Translation Expert Tells All - Show #121

The Global Marketing Show

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 15, 2023 45:33

Have you ever heard the saying: “Not my circus, not my monkeys”?  I use it all the time, yet never realized that it is translated from Polish.  Dr. Lynne Bowker, professor of translation technologies and information systems at the University of Ottawa, recently returned from Poland, where she was collaboratively researching ways to make academia more language inclusive. Scholars from around the world are encouraged to publish and attend conferences in English, yet fewer than 10% of the researchers in the world are Anglophones. In fact, for many it's their second, third, or even fourth language.  Imagine being a world expert in a subject but unable to share your findings and learn from others unless you speak English. With pressing global issues such as food insecurity, global warming, refugees, war, and more, Dr. Bowker set out to find ways in which AI translation or Machine Translation (MT) could help.  Dr. Bowker specializes in language technology. In her recent book, “Demystifying Translation,” she explains why AI and MT translation are today not yet able to solve the issues related to cross-lingual communication – there are limits to what the technology can do and it's not trustworthy.  The biggest challenges facing authors in academia are the ability to:  Read others' writings.  Write in English.  Leveraging AI/MT varies for each of these situations. To tackle the first challenge, the researcher can use automated translation to get the “gist” of what an article says and, with their specialized knowledge, do a pretty good job of figuring out its meaning.  In the second scenario, non-English speaking researchers typically don't possess English writing skills strong enough to clearly write their findings. This means that they would need to pay someone to write it or have a highly skilled translator edit their original draft. To simplify access to research, the academic community must get to the point of accepting publications in a researcher's native language, with readers relying on AI/MT for gist translations. Lacking this option, many researchers will continue to opt out of publishing or presenting at conferences to share important research.  At the same time, Dr. Bowker stresses the importance of recognizing that language technology is not perfect and ultimately requires nuanced discussion and experienced judgment regarding where and how to use it. It's not merely a discussion as to whether AI/MT will replace humans in translation.  Ironically, automated machine technology is old tech. In the 1940s during World War 2, experts developed tools to decipher what the enemy was saying – spying tools, essentially. The technology relied on dictionaries and linguistic rules for grammar to translate, and had particular trouble with synonyms (two meanings for one word) and polysemies (words with more than one meaning – for example “pen,” as in a writing pen or play pen). Ultimately, the technology was used only by professional translators because it was not good enough to release.  Throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, the technology in general improved – it became faster, smaller, and required less storage. Programmers started thinking of new ways to process language – by using data-driven approaches instead of linguistic rules. Translation quality improved in general but still fell far short of high quality.  Current advances have changed from data-driven analysis to pattern identification, whereby machine language learning develops a memory by ingesting vast amounts of multilingual text. Without the large amounts of data, the technology is useless.  Dr. Bowker recalls a time when Canadian weather forecasters struggled to hire English-French translators because the work was so repetitive – the words and format were always the same. After a few months, even new undergraduate translators quit from boredom. By leveraging AI/MT, the organization could save time, money, and effort.  Technology still struggles with:  Languages that have less content – languages like Welsh and Danish have fewer speakers, thus less content is produced. It's challenging enough to develop a machine learning (ML) model that can translate from English to Welsh, let alone from Welsh to Danish.  Unusual topics – in research, topics are usually novel and don't have a gathered history of translation. This challenges the technology to find appropriate translations.  Hallucinations – one team set out to test whether AI could properly classify an animal as a huskie or a wolf. After training the model on hundreds of pictures, its responses were mostly accurate; however, upon further inspection the researchers figured out that the model had been trained to identify wolves by snowy backgrounds, versus huskies in backyards. Thus, the model looked at the wrong information. Training for proper identification of skin lesions produced the same outcome – the model identified cancerous lesions by looking for a ruler in the picture.  Misogynism and racism – models learn and parrot back what it ingests and, simply put, the Internet provides lots of questionable content.  The bottom line, according to Dr. Bowker, is that while we are still far away from a world in which automated translation can replace human translation, the language industry will only benefit from educating people on proper and effective translation methods, in the meantime.  When translating your material, remember the iron triangle (aka project management triangle), which illustrates how the balance among three project constraints – scope, time, and budget – affects quality. Adjusting for any one constraint necessarily affects one or both of the other variables:   Fast and cheap = lower quality  Fast and quality = very expensive  High quality = pricey and slow  Finally, we agree that the industry conversation will turn toward the increasing need for experts in global content strategy. Think about the content along your buyer's (or stakeholder's) journey – from first encounter to raving fan. A thoughtfully planned strategy alongside clearly defined processes and technologies will guarantee high-quality content for every audience, while saving your employees time and effort.  Links:  Book: https://www.routledge.com/De-mystifying-Translation-Introducing-Translation-to-Non-translators/Bowker/p/book/9781032109244  With a Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-SA) license: https://www.taylorfrancis.com/books/oa-mono/10.4324/9781003217718/de-mystifying-translation-lynne-bowker   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lynne-bowker-0112996/?originalSubdomain=ca  Email: lbowker@uottawa.ca  Connect with Wendy - https://www.linkedin.com/in/wendypease/  Music: Fiddle-De-Dee by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com

The world was undergoing some other major changes — including the climate. Explosive volcanic eruptions late in the 1790s had led to vast quantities of dust being thrown in the stratosphere and this had a short term effect on temperatures around the world. Nowhere on earth was safe — in southern Africa for example it had exacerbated droughts for most of the first three decades of the 19th Century. The fact that the Voortrekkers were being rained on in 1838 was something of a return to normal after the long dry. According to scientists, the most sustained period of stratospheric dust was between 1807 and 1830, precisely at the period dominated by Shaka and then Dingana in the eastern part of southern Africa. There is a very close link between history and climate. In the northern hemisphere, records were tumbling. Unlike southern Africa there were summers of continuous rain up north, grain harvests failed completely in Germany, France and the British isles. When Tamboro exploded in Indonesia in 1815, it spread ash far and wide — and has now being blamed on what was being experienced by the northern hemisphere. A dust veil swept over the north, and distorted the normal wind patterns. In the Eastern Cape, the drought patterns had complicated British Settler lives between 1821 and 1823 — a searing drought which drove most of the new farmers off their land — to become more embroiled in hunting and commerce. Tree ring analysis shows how precipitously the climatic variation affected Zululand in particular in the first two decades of the 19th Century. While this was not the main reason that the powerhouses of the AmaZulu became so centralised, it was all part of the cause of the social and political changes. By the 1830s the introduction of new farming techniques around Port Natal or what was now being called Durban was a revolution — I've mentioned this in earlier podcasts and for good reason. Crop cultivation had increased and surpluses were reported — the growth of the large black peasant society in Natal during the first half of the 19th Century was a significant event. Dingana was outraged by how the former refugees that had fled his rule had apparently appeared to be prefer to live around the Port than return to Zululand. The fact that he had taken to burning down the umizi of chieftans he didn't like didn't help his cause either. So the English traders who were now taking up arms against him weren't just an irritation, they were becoming a centre of power that threatened the Zulu king's power ethos. While the Boers were considering their next moves, planning to conquer Dingana, the British further south were facing a conundrum. If they left the Voortrekkers to do what they wanted, there was every chance that the interior of southern Africa would become more unstable rather than less. Some may find this difficult to comprehend, but back in the late 1830s the expansion of the trekkers throughout the interior was thought of as a threat not a stabilising factor by the English authorities. They didn't see it as christians subduing the heathens, rather as unrestrained expansionism by a group of people that were not under their control. Another major event shook the eastern Cape in 1838, Andries Stockenstrom was going to resign — for the second time after he'd taken off back home to Sweden in the previous decade. As Stockenstrom bade his eastern frontier adieu, he was replaced by a military man called Colonel John Hare who arrived in 1838 with a kind of defeatist attitude, and was almost immediately out of his depth. He relied on information from two sources who were like yin and yang. These two chaos-ridden forces were Charles Lennox Stretch and John Mitford Bowker. Meanwhile, the English traders in Durban were planning was an attack on Dingana's umizi for a second time, their first had gone so well and they were supposed to be coordinating their military manoeuvres with the Boers.

What is your job but to care for self and learn more about human/spiritual existence? How do we get out of the victim space but also to see free will and choice and not be stuck in the judgement? We as humans have allowed this to happen where we gave up our body, mind, and soul to others to fix us to have a perfection of body to be seen in the world where everything is right and acceptable. What we are seeking is a deeper connection with soul, self, source energy, with God and with those around us. All of that is one. Once you step out of the human story, and into the story of one, identity doesn't matter, and you go out and be in service. This is why you are here and time to step up.The accomplishments of our soul; how do we open, how do we step into form, how do we navigate, and how do we see from within, that this is our mission in life.Human existence is getting into the sunset of life; it is disappearing, it is dissipating, and it no longer holds the joy of inner accomplishment's, and it doesn't even grasp the heart strings with stuff out there. For more information on Dr. Paul visit: https://www.hannahsholistichealing.comFor guided support or to have your first ever spiritual and soulful session with your spirit and Dr. Jeanette visit: www.DrJeanetteGallagher.com

In this episode, you'll also hear:How to obtain an ISBN, and why you might need more than oneHow to use keywords to attract your ideal reader to youTips on pricing your book – and why it won't necessarily reflect the hours of work you put into writing and publishingWhat a literary agent does and why you probably need oneIt's easy to be really passionate about the writing process and about wanting to share your story with the world and, at the same time, also be really lost to how the industry actually works. But if you don't understand how the industry works before you publish, it can actually hurt your book's success and impact. If you missed the previous episodes in this series, you can check them out here! Here are the next set of publishing terms you need to know.ISBNIf you have been thinking about self-publishing a book, you've probably seen this term, but you may not have fully understood what it meant. So let's break it down. ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number. As the name implies, this is a way of identifying your book. In other words, it's a way of distinguishing your book from others. Each book receives its own ISBN, which is typically 13 digits in length and used internationally. But why does it matter? Let's say you want to get your book into a library. The ISBN helps that library find your particular book out of all the books out there. How you get an ISBN varies depending upon where you are. If you're located outside of the United States, you can get one through a local ISBN Agency. If you are here in the United States or in the UK, ISBN numbers are administered by the companies Bowker and Nielsen, respectively. You do have to pay a fee to get an ISBN, but remember: publishing a book is starting a business. So consider this one of the startup costs for your book business. Often, the source you use to publish your book will offer you the opportunity to get an ISBN through them. For example, Amazon will grant you a free ISBN. But a word of caution: that ISBN can only be used on Amazon KDP. That means you'll have to get a new ISBN for every self-publishing platform you want to list your book on. A better alternative would be to purchase your own ISBN, so you have just one to use across all platforms. That said, you may still want to purchase multiple ISBNs at a time, because a single ISBN is only good for that particular format of the book. So if you get an ISBN for your print book, you'll need a separate one for your audiobook or Ebook. So, for that reason, it's not uncommon — and could be a wise business move — to go ahead and purchase 10 ISBNs at once. And because they don't expire, you don't need to worry about your money going to waste, even if it takes you some time to put out your audiobook, updated version, or other formats of your book. KeywordsIn this age of the internet, chances are you've probably heard mention of keywords before. But you may not know how this term applies to you as an author. So here's a very simple way of thinking about it: keywords are what the reader puts into the search engine when they want to find something to help them with a problem they have or questions they are looking to answer. Think about it. When you turn to Google or Amazon because you have a particular need or question, what do you type into the search box? Those are keywords. To put keywords to work for you, you've got to put yourself into the mindset of a reader, not the author. When readers go looking for what you have to offer in your book, what words will they enter into the search box? Spend some time brainstorming answers to that question so you can strategically select keywords that best describe your book and that match what your idea readers are looking for. Then, you'll need to use those keywords to your advantage. Include them in:Your bioYour book descriptionYour information on Author Central on AmazonAnywhere you can! That way, when people in your target audience go looking for a solution to their problem or answer to their question, your book comes up in the list of search results. When you choose the right keywords and leverage them effectively, you can attract your ideal reader to you.PricingPricing is an important topic, because there's so much wrapped up in it — and not just for the book. Many aspiring authors have a desire to use their book as a platform to build a coaching, consulting, or speaking business, so pricing also comes into play as they price their coaching and consulting packages and set their fees as a speaker. That means this is an important thing to get a grasp on as early as possible. Remember, books are a business, and businesses have to think about things like pricing strategy. So, again, put yourself in the mind of the reader. If you only think about it from your point of view as as author, you're only going to be thinking about the countless hours you've invested in researching and writing the book, how much you've paid for the book cover, formatting, editing, and so on.Yes, those things are a significant investment, and you want to make sure you get a return on that investment. But they're also the startup costs to your business, so they shouldn't necessarily determine the price you set for your book. Ultimately, you're going to earn the bulk of your income from what happens after the book — as you launch your coaching or consulting program, start getting those paid speaking engagements, or launch your online course. The book is just one piece of the puzzle. So everything doesn't rest upon the book.Instead, think of the book as a way of attracting people to you and what you have to say. That means the price needs to be reflective of the value that the client, the reader, is going to get and what they believe is reasonable for a book in your genre. Of course, this will vary depending on the type of book you want to write. So you'll want to do some research to find out typical price points for books in your genre, and also think about what your pricing will communicate to the reader and your future client. There's a little bit of an art and science to pricing your book, but ultimately, you do have a few options:Lower price: Pricing your book lower can help you sell more copies. Just be careful not to price it too low, because that can imply that it's of inferior quality.Middle ground: Choosing a mid-range price can be a safe medium that's not too high or too low.Higher price: A higher price communicates a higher value. However, the reader who stumbles upon it must believe that the value is there. If you price your book higher, you'll need to ensure that you have the credibility to back it up. Like it or not, your reader is likely comparing your book with your competitors'. So choose your pricing carefully, and keep in mind what your prices are communicating about you and your book. Literary AgentMost of the above terms are related to self-publishing, but a literary agent is relevant when you are thinking about going the traditional publishing route. A literary agent, or book agent, acts as the intermediary between you and the key players that can get you that book publishing deal. You aren't necessarily required to work with a literary agent, but it's a very good idea if your dream is to be picked up by a publishing house. Traditional publishing is a business that operates on relationships. So, as a new author who does not have those connections and relationships, you need to lean into someone who already has them. Someone who has already built a network, versus you trying to come in and convince people who have no idea who you are to give you a chance.Again, it's not impossible to get a traditional publishing deal without a literary agent, but it is extremely difficult. A literary agent helps reduce friction and makes the process much easier and faster, because they know how the book industry works. They have the relationships already, and they can act as your advocate to help you get the best deal and position your book for success. Without a literary agent, it's so much harder to get an editor to look at your book proposal or manuscript. And that's huge, because the editor is actually the person who sets you up to get that publishing deal. If you approach an editor on your own, you could easily end up talking to someone who doesn't specialize in the type of book you want to write. Then you'll be wasting their time and your own. But a literary agent knows what types of books editors are looking for, and can act as your liaison to introduce you to the right editor for your particular book. Because literary agents know market trends and keep their fingers on the pulse of the industry, they can even help you shape your manuscript so you'll have the best chance with an editor. Plus, they'll help you negotiate the terms of your contract.Of course, as the agent representing you, the literary agent gets a percentage of the deal they help negotiate. Typically, they operate on commission, and are only paid when you as the author get paid. So, while the literary agent may receive a 15% commission, keep in mind that they aren't paid for all the work they do prior to landing the deal, and it doesn't always work out. So when a book deal does come together — largely because of their network and relationships — they deserve that 15% commission! Of course, you do want to do your due diligence and make sure the literary agent is someone you feel good about. Pray about it, and make sure you trust them, because you'll be counting on them to advocate on your behalf. You want to make sure you have the right person for your particular project. Next Week on Book Publishing A to ZWe've covered some important terms this week, but there are still plenty more to come!
