Public Reaction to Mormon Garment Research: Sacred or Secret? (Nancy Ross & Jessica Finnigan 4 of 4)

Gospel Tangents Podcast

In the final installment Nancy Ross and Jessica Finnigan discuss their Mormon garment research, co-authors of Mormon Garments, Sacred and Secret explore the sociological themes of their book, the shifting historical meanings behind garments, and how their taboo-breaking research has been received by the community. Sacred vs. Secret: A Matter of Belief The authors break down the sociological framework of their book, organizing their findings around paired themes like “secrecy and sacredness,” “shame and worthiness,” and “obedience and control.” They argue that practically, the concepts of “secret” and “sacred” operate in the exact same way regarding garments, but the terminology wearers use heavily depends on their level of belief. Conforming believers tend to embrace the uplifting language of “sacredness,” while those experiencing doubt are more likely to view the practice through the lens of “secrecy” and institutional control. https://youtu.be/VmyTVrwo4zE Don't miss our other conversations Nancy Ross: https://gospeltangents.com/people/nancy-ross/ Copyright © 2026 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved The Evolution of Modesty and Institutional Control While Joseph Smith’s original garments were not about modesty, the cultural meaning of garments shifted significantly in the 1950s to become a primary tool for enforcing modesty boundaries, especially for women. The authors discuss how recent modernizations—such as the introduction of sleeveless garments—have caused emotional dissonance for older members who made significant personal sacrifices to adhere to previous, stricter modesty standards. The authors note that even when the church relaxes its rules by an inch or two, it ultimately serves as a reaffirmation of the institution’s power to control what its members wear. Wrestling Meaning from Fundamentalists The episode also highlights a fascinating historical power struggle in the 1920s. As fundamentalist Mormons clung to the original 19th-century garment design—claiming the LDS church’s 1923 modernizations were completely invalid—the mainstream church had to figure out a way to wrestle the meaning of the practice back. To do this, the LDS church actually expanded the language of the temple endowment to explicitly emphasize that the garment’s true meaning came from its marks, rather than an unalterable pattern. Opening Overdue Conversations Despite some immediate, dismissive pushback from critics who assumed the book would be a hostile exposé, the authors report that the overall reception has been overwhelmingly positive. Ross and Finnegan strived to write with a neutral tone and deep compassion for their former believing selves. By lifting the heavy taboo surrounding the topic, the book is providing members with the vocabulary to finally reflect on their personal experiences. Most importantly, it is giving spouses and friends the permission to have open, overdue conversations about the complex intersection of bodies, sexuality, and the physical realities of wearing garments. 0:00 Garments/Temple are Secret! This weekend we dove into two of the most memorized, most known, most powerful verses in all the Bible… Romans 12:1-2 tells us to "not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our minds.”Let's be honest… The pattern of this world is pretty chaotic. It's not very hard to find bad news. Because of that it becomes easy as believers to live, not in response to the grace of God, but in reaction to the chaos of the world. When we constantly consume the chaos, we will conform to the chaos. It gets into our minds and soul and affects every part of our life. Yet Jesus, the Prince of Peace, walks into the middle of our chaos and offers relief. He urges us to live in reaction, not to chaos, but his mercy. These verses help us to better understand how what we consume shapes who we become, why chaos is constantly fighting for our attention, what it means to become a “living sacrifice.” Scripture urges us to take chaotic thoughts captive before they take us captive, and how can we allow Jesus to renew our minds and form us into people of peace. Tune into this week's message as we unpack this in a message called, “No Longer Conforming to Chaos.”Join us for service online or in person every Sunday at 8am, 9:30am, 11:15am, & 5pm (C&V Service).Connect to Captivate! - https://shorturl.at/nKxQuDownload the Captivate App to Stay Connected! - https://shorturl.at/5PfXPIf you want to share how God is moving in your life through this ministry, please let us know at info@captivatesd.com!Decided To Follow Jesus? Different NLEs and color/finishing tools all think slightly differently. For example; positioning or a speed change in Premiere Pro might not show up correctly when conformed into DaVinci Resolve.  Over the years editors, colorists, and conform artists have built hacks and built up institutional knowledge of workflows for moving projects from one system to another but even at their best, the methods can be tedious and are seldom set it and forget it.  Conform.Tools is a suite of tools that is poised to really change how conforms are done making them efficient, fast and dare we say fun!  We were super excited to sit down with the guys and talk about the challenges of conforming and how conform.tools can help on your text project. Some of the specifics we discuss in this episode include:What makes conforming so challengingThe problem of different math and algorithms between different applicationsDealing with common conform problems like in/out point slippage, reel names, and other timecode issuesWorking with sizing and speed differences including speed ramps, interpreted clips, and speed interpolationGoals of conform.tools and looking at the workflowConform.Tools module: Timeline ExchangeConform.Tools module: i20Conform.Tools module Conform Connect including the forthcoming desktop appThe team at NAB & The NAB 2026 Colorist MixerAnd more!Check out offsetpodcast.com for our entire library of episodes. Galatians 4:8-20 ESV Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods. But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more? You observe days and months and seasons and years! I am afraid I may have labored over you in vain. Brothers, I entreat you, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You did me no wrong. You know it was because of a bodily ailment that I preached the gospel to you at first, and though my condition was a trial to you, you did not scorn or despise me, but received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus. What then has become of your blessedness? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have gouged out your eyes and given them to me. Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth? They make much of you, but for no good purpose. They want to shut you out, that you may make much of them. It is always good to be made much of for a good purpose, and not only when I am present with you, my little children, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth until Christ is formed in you! I wish I could be present with you now and change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.

What does it mean to live faithfully in a world that rewards conformity—and why might the Christian life feel “weird”? In this episode, Martha Tatarnic talks with Aaron Miller about what it looks like to follow Jesus in a way that resists cultural expectations and embraces a more intentional, embodied faith. Drawing from his ministry experience and writing, Aaron reframes “weird” not as something to avoid, but as a sign of living in alignment with the kingdom of God. The conversation explores how practices like prayer, Scripture, lament, and worship form disciples who can live with clarity and conviction in a complex world. Aaron also highlights the role of imagination in the Christian life—both as a response to cultural challenges and as a way to envision communities shaped by hope. They discuss the importance of formation over performance, the tension between cultural relevance and faithfulness, and how local churches can cultivate rhythms that sustain authentic discipleship. Together they explore: Why the Christian life can feel “weird”—and why that's not a problem The role of spiritual practices in forming faithful disciples How imagination shapes both personal faith and church life The importance of lament, presence, and embodied faith What it looks like to live with intentionality in everyday life Rev Aaron Miller is the congregational minister at University Hill United Church, and the UCC campus minister at the University of British Columbia. He is the author of Witnesses of These Things: Faithfulness Here and Now, and Weird in the World: Living Towards the World God Wants. Aaron lives in Vancouver with his wife, Kate, and their teenaged sons.    Mentioned Resources:

Conforming: One thing others do that you refuse to follow

Ever notice how some habits seem universal? Things people do without even thinking, because “that's just how it's done.” But here's the twist: not everyone agrees. Take washing chicken before cooking, for example. For years, it's been a kitchen ritual for many families. But did you know food safety experts say rinsing poultry can actually spread harmful bacteria around your sink and counters instead of removing it? Suddenly, that “must-do” doesn't sound so smart. Or what about starting your car? Some drivers swear by letting the engine idle for a few minutes before hitting the road, convinced it's the best way to “warm up” the car. Others argue modern engines don't need that at all, just start and go. These are the little things that spark big debates. So, what's your non-negotiable? The thing you just won't do, even if everyone else does? Maybe you refuse to put pineapple on pizza (because fruit belongs in a fruit salad, right?). Or maybe you never drink tea without sugar, no matter how many people say “it's healthier that way.” We all have those quirks that make us unique. With all this in mind, Stacey and J Sbu asked you: What's that one thing everyone seems to do, but you just refuse to conform? And most importantly, why?

Exhaustion and disconnection don't always stem from doing too much, often they stem from pretending too much. In today's episode, we explore surprising truths about energy, authenticity, and what it really means to show up as yourself in medicine and in life.  What if the path to healing, for ourselves and for others, comes from standing out, not blending in? Conformity has a significant cost. Deep-seated energy leaks often stem from hiding our true selves.  We hope you will take us up on the invitation to uncover and embrace the most radiant, wholehearted version of you. Pearls of Wisdom: Authenticity is the most efficient and sustainable way to manage your energy. Conforming and performing often disconnects us from joy and purpose. Your originality and uniqueness are not liabilities because they are your greatest offering. Standing out with sincerity makes you a beacon of safety and belonging for others. Peace and presence are found not in perfection, but in being whole. Reflection Questions: Where in your life do you feel most like your authentic self? Where do you find yourself performing or people-pleasing, and what does that cost you? What would it feel like to walk through your day radiantly, peacefully you– without apology or armor? Garth Heckman The David Alliance TDAgiantSlayer@Gmail.com    What do you love the most? A certain type of food? Your spouses hips or lips? Your job? The money you make? Your biceps? Your ministry? Your 1953 corvette? Your brand-new Mercedes? Your girlfriend? Alcohol? Drugs? Your phone?  Or maybe it is far worse than that? Maybe you are in love with…. Thats where we are going today!   What are you in love with… a lot of answers come to mind… but I believe they all stem from one basic foundation. We love to be approved by others. We love others approval. And we are willing to do just about anything to get it.    The approval of other people is so important to most because it's deeply rooted in fundamental human psychological and evolutionary needs. Here's a breakdown of the key reasons: 1. Evolutionary and Survival Instincts: Historical Necessity: For much of human history, belonging to a group or tribe was essential for survival. Being accepted meant access to resources, protection from threats, and the ability to find a mate and raise offspring. Rejection from the group could be a death sentence. This deep-seated fear of rejection and need for acceptance has been passed down through generations. Social Connection: Humans are inherently social creatures. Our brains are wired for connection, and social interaction plays a crucial role in our well-being. Approval from others reinforces our sense of belonging and validates our place within a community. 2. Psychological Needs: Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: The need for belongingness and love, and then esteem, are fundamental human needs in Maslow's hierarchy, ranking above basic physiological and safety needs. Approval from others contributes directly to these levels, making us feel loved, accepted, and valued. Self-Esteem and Self-Worth: For many, external validation acts as a mirror, reflecting back a sense of their own worth. When we receive approval, compliments, or praise, it can boost our confidence and reaffirm our abilities. Conversely, a lack of approval or criticism can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. Fear of Rejection and Judgment: This is a powerful motivator. Many people seek approval to avoid the pain of being rejected, criticized, or judged. This fear can stem from childhood experiences where acceptance felt conditional. Dopamine Release: Receiving external validation, like likes on social media or compliments, can trigger the release of dopamine, a "feel-good" neurotransmitter in the brain. This creates a temporary sense of pleasure and satisfaction, which can lead to a desire to repeat behaviors that elicit this response. Social Comparison: We often compare ourselves to others to gauge our own performance, appearance, and social standing. Seeking approval can be a way to ensure we measure up favorably in these comparisons. 3. Childhood Experiences: Early Conditioning: Our early experiences, particularly with caregivers, heavily influence our need for approval. Children who receive consistent approval and validation tend to develop a stronger internal sense of self-worth. Those who experience neglect, criticism, or conditional acceptance may grow up with a persistent need for external validation. Learning Behavior: As children, we naturally look to our parents for recognition and validation when we accomplish something. This teaches us that external feedback is a way to understand if we've done "a good thing." 4. Societal and Cultural Factors: Social Norms: Society often has unspoken rules and expectations. Conforming to these norms can lead to increased social acceptance. Deviating from them can result in social exclusion. Social Media: The digital age has intensified the pursuit of approval. Platforms that revolve around "likes," "shares," and comments provide constant opportunities for external validation, which can become addictive and lead to an unhealthy reliance on others' opinions for self-worth.   Botton line is this - you seek peoples approval because you don't know you you have Gods approval.  Look one of my favorite memories is competing as a powerlifter and pulling 670 in Masters division one - it was a grind… drug free, no suit, just me and the iron - and when I was done I had Donnie Thompson who was at the judges table taking numbers call me over and tell me that it was a great lift. Donnie thompson is on the mount Rushmore of powerlifters. The first one ever to hit a 3000 pound total. When he says Great lift - it doens't really matter what anyone else thinks. He is the king of powerlifting. Well we serve another king who is the King of the world, the universe… and when we know we have his approval - nothing else matters.  Galatians 1:10 Obviously, I'm not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ's servant. OOOHhhhh this is sooo good. Did you catch it? You serve the one who's approval you seek. So whomever you are hoping to be approved by - you will do whatever it takes to show them you are their servant. The world loves suckers like you.  I live my life on one simple rule… If I know my relationship with God is good… then I don't give two cats meows about what anyone else thinks about me, what I do, what I say, where I go, what I believe in, what I stand for or what I preach or post on social media. I don't care - because God approves of me.  How do you know God approves of you? Well you don't earn it. You don't have to be special, you don't have to be good enough… you simply trust in his grace and his work on the cross. And here is the real secret, when you know you have Gods approval, you are free to be exactly who he created you to be.

The Leader Unmasked: Thera Prins on Breaking Free from Conformity   Ever feel like you're hiding your true self to fit corporate expectations? Burnt out from pretending to be someone you're not?   This episode of The Leader Unmasked is your wake-up call. Host Angela Cox, a Master Coach for Executives and Founder of Paseda360, sits down with Thera Prins, CEO of Equiniti, who broke free from the shackles of conformity. Thera shares her journey from dull navy suits and suppressed vibrancy in banking to rediscovering her "colour" after devastating setbacks, redundancy at Lloyds and a marriage breakdown. Through her "enough moment," she learned that conforming didn't bring success; authenticity did.   Perfect for senior leaders and aspiring professionals, this episode dives into the "silent middle", high-functioning leaders quietly unraveling and how to shed the mask of conformity. Thera's story will inspire you to embrace your true self, stay visible in midlife, and lead with resilience.   Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Learn how to break free from conformity and lead authentically, no matter the corporate pressure. Understand the "silent middle" and how to overcome burnout by embracing your true self. Gain insights from Thera Prins on staying visible as a woman in midlife through authentic leadership. Resources: Contact Angela Cox on LinkedIn Visit The Leader Unmasked Podcast Explore coaching at Paseda360 Episode Highlights: [00:02:22 - 00:04:22] Conforming to Fit In: Thera shares how she adopted a conformist persona—wearing navy suits and suppressing her vibrant personality—to succeed in banking, only to realize it dulled her true self. [00:04:51 - 00:06:17] The Enough Moment: Thera recounts her devastating redundancy at Lloyds and personal collapse, which forced her to confront how conformity led to a loss of authenticity and happiness. [00:08:17 - 00:08:53] Becoming a Role Model: Thera reflects on the shift from emulating others to being a role model by leading authentically, inspiring others to do the same. [00:35:10 - 00:45:23] Staying Visible in Midlife: Thera discusses staying visible as a woman in midlife by rejecting corporate constraints and embracing her energy, wisdom, and authentic leadership. Three Powerful Quotes: [00:06:18] “I slowly separated myself from the true person that I am… My mum would say to me, ‘You've lost your color.'” [00:06:39] “The big turning point for me was, well, you know, sod all this… I'd spent all this time adjusting to what I thought everybody else expected of me.” [00:45:23] “I've got nothing to lose anymore… I've got all that learning and all that confidence, plus a big network of people that I love. So let's go and do something good with it.” About the Guest: Thera Prins, a dynamic CEO, embodies the power of authentic leadership after a transformative journey through corporate conformity. With a career spanning banking and leadership roles, Thera once molded herself to fit expectations—wearing "boring" navy suits and suppressing her vibrant personality to climb the ranks. A devastating redundancy at Lloyds and personal challenges became her "enough moment," prompting her to reject conformity and rediscover her true self.   Now, as a leader, Thera inspires others to shed inauthentic masks and lead with courage and authenticity. Her story resonates with the "silent middle"—leaders quietly struggling under pressure, offering hope and strategies for resilience. Passionate about empowering women in midlife to stay visible, Thera combines her wisdom, energy, and colorful personality to foster human-centric leadership. Her insights make her a role model for executives and aspiring leaders seeking to lead well and live well.   Enjoy this Podcast? Failure is not the end of things. When Francesca Ebel, a Russia correspondent for The Post, returned to one of Moscow's most popular nightclubs after Russia's invasion of Ukraine began, she noticed differences. The physical structure was there, but there were fewer young artists. Something had changed. What Ebel noticed that night was just one example of a bigger shift. Her reporting has since found that young Russians are increasingly embracing a culture of ultranationalist patriotism and Orthodox Christian values. Online influencers and Kremlin-sanctioned artists are changing the narratives on war and identity. An independent poll this year found a majority of Russians ages 18 to 24 support Russia's war in Ukraine. Conforming can bring rewards and career advancement. Defiance can mean jail – or worse. Today on “Post Reports,” Ebel speaks with host Elahe Izadi about her reporting inside Russia on how Putin's propaganda strategies toward Russian youth are working – and creating a new generation to carry forward the Kremlin's anti-Western ideology. Born in the Bronx, New York, he honed his exceptional sales skills at Ameriprise and J.P. Morgan Chase before earning a B.A. in Economics from the University of Connecticut. Today, Andre is here to share some exciting insights and experiences from his remarkable journey.   (2:03) Background Story From a young age, Andre Swanston embraced a mindset that set him apart. Conforming never interested him; instead, he sought different approaches to everything, from tying his shoelaces to solving math problems in unique ways. This natural inclination to think differently laid the foundation for his entrepreneurial journey.   (8:17) First Steps In A Business The first crucial step in any business venture is recognizing your strengths and weaknesses. Once you have that clarity, the key is to surround yourself with people who excel in areas where you may not.   (12:24) Stepping Stones Three key moments shaped the company's journey: raising initial capital in 2014 to hire the first team, securing major enterprise deals in 2017 as connected TV gained traction, and anticipating competition from industry giants, which guided our successful execution strategy.   (16:27) The Future Of Digital Ads In the future of digital ads, impartiality and trust are key. As data privacy and regulations tighten, partnering with a neutral third party ensures transparent and compliant data analysis, avoiding conflicts of interest from media or device companies. This approach helps navigate industry challenges and build a reliable foundation for the evolving ad landscape.   (19:12) Selling A Company When preparing to sell a company, focus on securing multi-year contracts. These contracts significantly increase your company's valuation, often yielding a higher revenue multiple compared to one-time deals. Understanding this can strategically position your business for a more lucrative sale.   (21:31) Growing A Business When growing a business, maximize what you can do without external capital. This gives you control and flexibility to pivot and adapt early on, allowing for smoother growth before bringing in outside investors. It also demonstrates commitment and resilience to potential investors.   (26:19) Motivation The most important advice for entrepreneurs is to trust your instincts and understand your motivations. Your unique life experiences shape your perspective, and leveraging these insights is crucial. Remember, entrepreneurship is tough and success often comes from sheer ambition and perseverance, not from any inherent superiority.   Tags: Instagram: Andre Swanston @dreswan06
