Having conversations that Every Church Leader needs to hear.
One of the biggest hurdles that churches face is the revolving door regarding staffing. Statistics show that ministry leaders and pastors are switching jobs or leaving ministry altogether in large numbers. Matt Steen of Chemistry Staffing works daily with churches and potential staff members to help churches have a healthy staff culture and ensure their next hire is excellent. In this episode, Matt talks about the parts of the process you cannot skip when hiring, how to treat people well even when they aren't your choice, and why slowing down your process might be the best decision you make. As always, let us know what you think! In this week's episode, I'm sitting down with Rev. Dr. Brian Fraser. Brian has ministered with Presbyterian congregations in Ontario, served as the Dean of St. Andrew's Hall at the University of British Columbia, and professor of history at Vancouver School of Theology, and is the founder of Jazzthink. In this episode, Brian and I dig deep into what it means to be a disciple and ambassador of Christ and how to consider those terms practically when developing ideas for evangelism in today's cultural context. In this episode, Mike sits down with John Borthwick. John has been the minister at St. Andrew's Guelph for 17 years. If you asked him about his ministry, he'd simply tell you that he feels called to the places where he believes Jesus would be found today. His new project The Abbey, has already started shaping how churches look at hybrid ministries and other important topics of the day, so let's get into it! . . . . . . #churchhelper #churchconsulting #sotrytelling #kidsministry #churchconsultant #churchgrowth #attendancegrowth #growingattendance #churchleader #elders #eldertraining #sessiontraining #sessionleadership #sessions #churchleader #churchleadertraining #ministry #ministrytraining #churchstrategy #churchcommunication #teambuilding #churchteams #mikewasyluk #northamericanchurch #canadianchurch #churchleadertraining #churchleaderpodcast #churchpodcast #churchcoach #leadpastor #pastortraining #pastorcoaching #ministercoaching #leadminister #ministertraining #sessionmembers #trainyourelders #churchwebsite #churchsocialmedia #onlineengagement #churchnewsletter #onlineengagement #eldertraining #sessionmember #elderboard #churchelder #churchboard #clerkofsession #disciples #churchbuilding
Today I'm having a conversation with Leah Logan and Mark Willcock from Indwell. Indwell is a faith-based non-profit that partners with churches and communities to create affordable housing that supports people seeking health, wellness and belonging. They've got a fantastic backstory, and if you're a church that wants to help support those without sustainable living or a church looking to move out of its building, then this episode is for you! One area that churches are really struggling to become resourced in, and are starting to feel the pressure in the areas of mental health and suicide. So many pastors and elders don't know where to turn for good resources and helpful advice. With that struggle in mind, we tried to do something that would help you out. Today, I'm presenting to you my interview with Mark Stromenberg. As someone who battles mental illness himself, Mark is passionate about communicating hope and help to the one-fifth of Canadians who will struggle with a mental illness and to those who have a friend or family member that is hurting. Through his own life, training, and professional experience, Mark seeks to bring the Light of Hope to those struggling with depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts in a holistic and practical way. Mark specializes in motivational speaking, leading educational workshops, and suicide intervention instruction. In this episode, we discuss the importance of not skipping ahead to the "fun parts" of growth without first making sure you lay a solid foundation. For as long as I can remember, people have been talking to me about church growth. As a staff member, I remember people asking me how I would plan to "grow our youth group" or what the church planned to do to "find new people to attend." We would talk about outreach strategies, new programming ideas, and advertising our upcoming holiday services. Upon reflection, I think there's a conversation I often forgot to initiate because I took the answer for granted in many cases. A conversation that started with the question, how do we define growth? So today, I'm to briefly chat about how your church could or should define growth, three different types of growth in your church, and why the answers are likely different from church to church. In this episode, we're going to start a conversation around the one word that I've heard a lot of churches use, but often it's used as a kind of catch-all term, and if you read the title of this episode, you know that word is "relevant."
As churches continue to regather in person, each one is, on one level or another, is asking the same question: "What are we going to do now?" If you asked, I'm sure you'd find that most churches would like to make an impact on their communities, teach more people about Jesus, and find a way to grow a little bit. Where do we start? So in this episode, we're going to talk about four conversations you can start with your church or elders that can lead to making an impact in 2021. I know it's more than half over, but it's certainly not too late.
With restrictions lifting at a pace that seems like it may stay consistent, we might finally be working ourselves towards a more predictable ministry calendar. And as you start to plan it out, you may find while looking at your ministries, staff positions, and goals that they might not all match. You might have noticed already that some Christians have started moving from congregation to congregation fueled by the pandemic. That's going to mean a lot of moves that come with big feelings and strong opinions. And churches will be on both ends of this. People might leave their church because they are upset, leaving you sad. But others may join your church because they were upset, leaving you with expectations. And I think church staffs and elders need to be talking about this and preparing for it now. Whether you talk about it openly or not, everyone on your staff team, elders team or on the membership roll takes stalk of what's happening at the church and decides for themselves whether or not things are working. If you've ever heard anyone talk about an event or ministry that used to run well in the past but doesn't now, that person is saying, "back when we did this, we were more successful." Everyone in your church measures success somehow- and that's not a bad thing. It's a good thing. When someone measures success, it means they're looking to see if what they're doing is working. One of the biggest balancing acts that a leader has to deal with daily is walking the line between bringing a Leader and being a Manager. Both approaches are important, and both have their time, but if you're the wrong one at the wrong moment, your team can get a little confused. Have you ever worked with someone who always seemed open to ideas and suggestions but all of a sudden got locked in on a task and didn't want to hear about anything other than progress? It's likely either you've worked for or been that person. It's also likely that the people around you noticed the switch. So in this episode, we're going to talk about the difference between Leading and managing. Both approaches are needed to finish a job, but they are quite different. When leading a team, sooner or later, you're going to run into conflict. Whether it's something someone said or did, eventually, there will be a moment when your team isn't on the same page. And the type of leader you are, combined with your personality, will influence when you notice it, how you deal with it, and how your team makes it through. And because this is so important, and there are different ways a team deals with conflict, we're going to focus on that today. So if you want to manage conflict better on whatever team you're leading, please stick around because the Church Helper podcast starts right now.
Maybe you're a church staff member, leading teams that oversee ministries, strategic planning or even your next hire. Maybe you're an elder that's heading up a committee, overseeing staff reviews or organizing a handful of events this year. Or you could be a volunteer tasked with leading offsite outreach projects or your youth group. No matter what type of size of team you are leading or what they're tasked with, I'll bet somewhere along the way your run into a couple of the hurdles we're going to talk about today. And so, if you'd like a couple of insights on how to lead your team a little better, then I'd stick around because the church helper Podcast starts right now!
In this episode of the Church Helper Podcast, we're looking at how to find out if your church is as welcoming a place as you likely feel it is! Sometimes we can all be blind to some of the everyday things in our churches that don't help others feel like they're a part of the family. Dodgeball. Retreats. Putting a Happy Meal in a Blender. These are just a few of the things that may come to mind first when thinking about Student Ministry. But Student Ministry is one of the most interesting areas of church leadership for this season. It's so fluid. The people leading it are often changing. The students themselves age in and out of the ministry. And with the fast evolution of technology and ever-changing culture, Student Leaders constantly need to reinvent themselves and their ministry. And even though Student Leaders are used to the idea that change is the only constant in their job, there are still a few things they all have in common that elders should know about.
While people can make assumptions about Sr. Leaders or Children's Ministry Leaders based on their exposure, rarely is the average congregation member, or elder, regularly exposed to the church administrator. So today, we're going to talk about three things your elders need to know about church administrators that will help you all work better together. I hope that's a good enough tease because, honestly, this might be our most exciting episode yet. So hang on because the Church Helper Podcast starts right now.
It's a BIG ONE today on the Church Helper Podcast because we're diving into three things that every Sr. Leader wishes their elder's team understood about their job. And this topic is important because even though Elders and Sr. Leaders spend a lot of time together, there's often still a gap in understanding what the job of a Sr. Leader includes. So, if you're an elder or a staff member and you'd like to have a better working relationship between your two teams, then stick around because the church helper podcast starts right now.
Today on the Church Helper Podcast, we're going to dive deeper into what it takes to be a worship leader in a church by looking at some of the parts of the job that everyone might not know about but definitely should know about. So, if you're a church staff member or an elder, and you'd like to share a more common language between your groups so you can work well together as a team, then stick around because the Church Helper Podcast starts right now.
Working at a church is a unique mix of worldview, employment and lifestyle that is hard to describe unless you've done it. And because we at Church Helper know that most elders haven't worked in a church before, we would like to pull back the curtain just a little and help elders understand and empathize with their staff. We know that there are some things elders just don't think about, not because they aren't thoughtful, but because Ministry is so different than any other workplace. So we're going to spend a bit of time helping you Get To Know Your Staff. This week, we're starting with Children's Ministry Staff. So, if you're a staff member or an elder who would like to share a more common language, and work together as a more tightly knit team, then stick around because the Church Helper Podcast starts right now.
This week Mike gives a quick update on where Church Helper is headed, why we think supporting Elders is so important, and what you can do to support your church next.
We've spent our last few episodes of the Church Helper Podcast talking about Mission Drift. In this video, we finish our series on Mission Drift with a short story. This Podcast isn't going to be a long one, so I hope you stick around. Here we go!
There's this phrase that goes, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." Now, eating an apple a day doesn't really keep the doctor away, but we all know that's not the meaning of the phrase anyway. The meaning behind the phrase is, "if you make healthy decisions every day, you're going to be healthier." In today's episode of the Church Helper Podcast, I'm going to give you a few ways your church can make healthier decisions every day and avoid that sneaky problem we call Mission Drift. So, you're up for it, then stick around because we're going to start right now.
Mission Drift. It's sneaky. It's sneaky because it can disguise itself in many different ways. It's easy for your church to feel like it's on Mission when it's busy, but unfortunately, that's not always the case. We've talked about Mission Drift before, but today I'm going to give you a few specific things to look out for and things you can do right away.
If you've ever been in an elders meeting, a staff meeting or on a committee, and you feel like you just keep coming up with lots of ideas, but none of them seem to go anywhere, then I've got a suggestion as to what might be happing. In today's episode, we tackle Mission Drift and how it's affecting your ministry - so let's get after it! Also... a little Easter Egg here, we're having a baby tomorrow, and the Church Helper team grows by one!
Today I've got a quick story to share about a time a church got their mission and method confused, and what happened next. If that sounds interesting to you then stick around, because the next episode of the Church Helper Podcast is here!
So you understand the difference between a church's mission and a church's methods. But what are you supposed to do with that? How and where does it show up, and when should you be paying attention? Big or small, Mission and Method show themselves in every church meeting you have, so you should know what to look for. So settle in, because this week's episode of the Church Helper Podcast is here!
In every church, and in every ministry, there are two things that are in constant competition with each other. Your Mission, and Your Methods. And if you don't know how to tell the difference between the two, then you're in for some frustrating days, and your church will be less effective in sharing the message of Jesus and loving your neighbours than it should be. So today we're going to start a conversation about the difference between Mission and Method and going to help you, big time. I'm ready to go, are you? The first episode of the church helper podcast starts right now.
