In De Nacht van KRO-NCRV gaat Elif Kan in gesprek met Steffie van der Steen, adjunct-hoogleraar Inclusieve Ontwikkelings- en Onderwijsinterventies met een speciale focus op mens-dierinteractie. Steffie doet al jaren onderzoek naar de inzet van hulpdieren in therapie en onderwijs, en pleit voor meer erkenning én betere regelgeving. Hulpdieren blijken vooral waardevol voor mensen bij wie reguliere therapie niet altijd voldoende werkt. Ze kunnen helpen bij zelfvertrouwen, communicatie en het bespreekbaar maken van problemen, zeker bij kinderen en mensen die moeite hebben om te praten. Volgens Steffie is therapie met dieren allesbehalve zweverig: er is wetenschappelijk bewijs, al zijn de onderzochte groepen vaak nog klein. Toch is het krijgen van een hulphond of ander hulpdier ingewikkeld. Zorgverzekeraars wijzen aanvragen vrijwel standaard af en gemeenten bepalen streng wie in aanmerking komt. Dat terwijl een hulpdier op de lange termijn vaak goedkoper is dan alternatieve zorgtrajecten. Steffie pleit daarom voor meer onderzoek en duidelijke overheidsregels. Ook robotdieren komen aan bod. Die worden steeds vaker ingezet in zorginstellingen en bij kinderen met spraakproblemen. De interactie met een robothond blijkt drempelverlagend: kinderen durven makkelijker te praten en geven duidelijker commando's. Volgens Steffie laten zowel echte als robotdieren zien hoe krachtig mens-dierinteractie kan zijn, mits die serieus wordt genomen.

Nederland huivert na een gruweldaad in de donkerste dagen van december 1872. De daders zijn ontkomen. Het volk begint te morren. Ondertussen klinkt de roep om herinvoering van de kort daarvoor afgeschafte doodstraf. Goedvolk en de kop van Jut reconstrueert het moordonderzoek, de ophef, het proces en de lange nasleep van de misdaad. Het voert de lezer over vier continenten en langs jarenlang in het duister tastende politieagenten, spiritisten, kermisattracties, een wezendorp en prominente negentiende-eeuwers als Aletta Jacobs en Multatuli. Historische true crime van eigen bodem, omdat een waargebeurd verhaal soms elke fictie overtreft. Paul van der Steen is journalist en onder meer correspondent Limburg van NRC Handelsblad. Remove from heat. Set a dozen dried corn husks into the pan and let steep for thirty minutes. Remove husks and discard. Add 1 tablespoon of Everclear. 1980s Dublin wasn't all emigration and recession. There was great music, mad nights out and a capital city bursting with homegrown talent. Irish rock icons Leslie Dowdall of In Tua Nua and Flo McSweeney of Toy With Rhythm and Moving Hearts were at the epicentre of it and now they have teamed up to present Natural Women, a collaboration which will see them covering songs by 1970s songwriting legends Carole King and Linda Ronstadt in Vicar Street. They came in to talk to host Roisin Ingle about their 1980s heyday, the scene in the Pink Elephant nightclub and why they wanted to make music together after all these years.
