Josh Howell, LEI President, Mark Reich, LEI Chief Engineer Strategy, and Art Smalley discuss the four basic types of problem-solving. Art is a well-known expert in leadership, management, and the Toyota Way. He worked at Toyota Motor Corp. in Japan; helped to transform Donnelly Corp. in Michigan; was a consultant with McKinsey & Co.; and has authored several award-winning books, including Four Types of Problems. The trio set out to discuss how the framework of the four types of problems maps onto the lean management system explained in Mark's recent book about hoshin kanri, Managing on Purpose, as well as daily management in Toyota, leadership, culture, and other related topics. The systematic intersection of these topics is a complex subject beyond just the simpler notion of “tools.” Art and Mark share respective viewpoints from their time at Toyota in Japan and what made the system so unique while trying to connect the dots of four types of problems, hoshin kanri, and other areas. Josh kicks off the podcast by asking Art and Mark to examine in detail troubleshooting — the most frequent and possibly most misunderstood type of problem-solving. A good troubleshooting environment involves quickly attacking known problems with known solutions to get operations back to normal (i.e., how to mitigate issues that prevent achievement of near-term goals). They also review troubleshooting's relationship with the other types of problem-solving and the “flavors” of the types — gap from standard (how to prevent a problem from recurring by eliminating its underlying root causes), target condition (kaizen to elevate the standard), and open-ended (innovations and breakthrough thinking) — as well as the complex interaction of the four types with daily management and hoshin kanri. The types of attachment were theorized by British psychologist John Bowlby in the 1950s. They are widely used to help us understand how we react to situations in our relationships, whether it be with romantic partners, friends or family members. Bowlby relied on research on the impact of early separations between infants and their mothers, and emphasized the importance of attachment relationships in the social and emotional development of children, as well as their long-term mental health. What exactly is an attachment style? And what about the other two types? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions ! Connection, both with others and with oneself, really is the answer to so many of life's woes. We know that investing in our relationships helps us become happier, healthier, and more fulfilled. Dr. Adam Dorsay, author of the book Super Psyched: Unleash the Power of the 4 Types of Connection and Live the Life You Love, walks us through this straightforward but vital idea in this episode: that the antidote to the uniquely modern angst so much of us experience today is connection. Connection forms the foundation of mental health and happiness, with disconnection from ourselves, others, the world, and something greater underlying virtually every psychological struggle we face.• Four types of connection: with self (authenticity), others (relationships), the world (nature/art), and something greater (awe/spirituality)• Modern distractions like social media, FOMO, and constant digital interruptions actively prevent meaningful connection• Self-connection provides the foundation for all other connections - if disconnected from ourselves, we can't truly connect elsewhere• Personal "connection formulas" vary widely - activities that energize one person may drain another• Novel shared experiences allow families and couples to see each other through fresh eyes and strengthen bonds• Friendships serve vital roles that romantic relationships cannot replace - no single relationship can meet all our connection needs• Workplace connection can be found by developing valued skills and experiencing flow states even in less-than-ideal jobs• Loneliness impacts physical health more than smoking, highlighting connection as a fundamental human needThe book "Super Psyched: Unleash the Power of the Four Types of Connection and Live the Life You Love" is available now on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, and you can learn more at DrAdamDorsay.com.Visit our site for FREE relationship resources and regular giveaways: Strongermarriage.org Podcast.stongermarriage.org Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/strongermarriage/ Facebook Marriage Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/770019130329579 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/strongermarriagelife/ Dr. Dave Schramm: http://drdaveschramm.com http://drdavespeaks.com Dr. Liz Hale: http://www.drlizhale.com

On this episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, we get a Pirates Perspective with our favorite fellow Category Pirates Eddie Yoon and Katrina Kirsch on how personal capital—financial resources, reputation, creativity, and relationships—can empower individuals to design a career and life on their own terms. Many people wake up every day working for someone else's dream, relying on a paycheck while wondering, “Is this all there is?” The truth is, breaking free from this cycle requires more than just ambition—it takes Personal Capital. We hope that this episode helps fellow Pirates see how they can build up their personal capital rather than mindlessly selling their time for money. You're listening to Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go. The Four Types of Personal Capital To build a career that provides true freedom, you need more than just money. The four types of personal capital include: Financial Capital – Savings, investments, and income sources that give you the flexibility to take risks and invest in yourself. Reputation Capital – Your personal brand, expertise, and credibility that open doors to new opportunities. Creator Capital – The ability to generate unique ideas and create scalable value, especially in a digital-first world. Relationship Capital – A strong network of mentors, collaborators, and supporters who propel you forward. The hosts discuss that understanding and investing in these four areas allows individuals to shift from merely selling their time for money to leveraging their skills and resources for long-term independence. The Emotional Journey of Breaking Free Leaving behind a traditional career path is not just a financial challenge—it's an emotional one. Fear, self-doubt, and the weight of societal expectations can make this transition overwhelming. Each of the hosts then share their journey from restarting again to launching a successful business despite having no money or connections and the uncertainty of success. Entrepreneurs and career changers often grapple with fear of failure and imposter syndrome. However, taking control of one's career means embracing the discomfort of uncertainty and learning from failures rather than fearing them. The key is to develop radical agency—the mindset that you are the author of your own future. Adapting to the Changing Work Landscape The hosts then get to the topic of AI. The digital revolution, particularly the rise of AI and automation, is reshaping how we work. Traditional knowledge-based careers are being disrupted as AI makes existing information more accessible and commoditized. The new competitive edge lies in creative and entrepreneurial thinking. All three agree that in order to thrive in this evolving landscape, professionals must learn to shift from knowledge work to creator work, producing unique and scalable value. One must also leverage digital tools and platforms to build their brand and reach a global audience. And finally, one must continuously learn and reinvent themselves to stay ahead of industry shifts. The key takeaway? Now is the best time to embrace digital opportunities and take control of your career. Those who do will find greater flexibility, fulfillment, and financial independence. Daniel Pink joins Blue Sky for a lively and wide-ranging discussion. He describes the importance of what he sees as a personal portfolio that includes a predominance of optimism that's balanced by a healthy and helpful dose of pessimism. He also forceful debunks “the cynical genius illusion,” which leads to an undue bias towards those with cynical, negative viewpoints. He and Bill also discuss the connections between curiosity and optimism and Daniel describes the research and powerful conclusions from his latest bestseller, The Power of Regret: How Looking Backward Moves Us Forward. Chapters: 02:36 Exploring Flexible Optimism Daniel Pink discusses the concept of flexible optimism, emphasizing the balance between optimism and pessimism. He explains how both perspectives can contribute to better decision-making and leadership. 04:18 The Role of Purpose in Motivation The conversation shifts to the importance of purpose over profit in motivating individuals. Daniel argues that a compelling purpose can inspire employees more effectively than mere financial goals. 07:27 Optimism vs. Pessimism in Today's World Daniel shares his perspective on the current state of the world, acknowledging both progress and significant challenges. He believes that it's possible to hold both optimism and realism simultaneously. 12:19 Predictions for the Future Daniel reflects on past predictions made about the future, highlighting how most extreme forecasts missed the mark. He emphasizes the value of moderate optimism in forecasting outcomes. 17:41 Understanding Regret The discussion transitions to Daniel's book, ‘The Power of Regret,' where he challenges the notion of living without regrets. He explains how acknowledging and learning from regrets can lead to personal growth. 20:02 The Four Types of Regrets Daniel categorizes regrets into four types: foundation, boldness, moral, and connection regrets. Each type reflects different aspects of life and decisions that people often reflect upon. 25:01 Learning from Regrets The conversation explores how recognizing and confronting regrets can provide valuable insights into personal values and life choices. 30:04 Navigating Regret: A Path to Growth In this chapter, the discussion centers around how to differentiate between wallowing in regret and using it as a learning tool. 33:01 The Future: What Will Matter Most? Here, the conversation shifts to the long-term perspective on regrets and the decisions we make today. 34:24 Understanding Regrets of Omission Daniel Pink shares insights on how our fears of risks can lead to regrets of omission, particularly among pessimists. This chapter explores the value of understanding our regrets to align with our core values and make better decisions. 36:01 Curiosity as an Optimistic Act The dialogue delves into the relationship between curiosity and optimism, with Daniel asserting that curiosity stems from a sense of possibility. 39:02 The ‘Why Not?' Approach Daniel discusses his ‘Why Not?' series, which encourages open-mindedness and exploration of unconventional ideas. The chapter emphasizes the importance of fostering possibilities rather than simply sharing opinions. 42:00 The Illusion of Cynical Intelligence In this segment, the conversation tackles the misconception that cynicism equates to intelligence. Daniel explains the ‘cynical genius illusion' and advocates for openness as a more accurate marker of intelligence. 45:26 What's Next for Daniel Pink? As the conversation wraps up, Daniel shares his current state of exploration and curiosity rather than focusing on a new book project.
Should Christians get involved in politics? Aren't we supposed to keep church and state separate? What does the Bible say about all of this? In our last lesson we talked about the biblical principles upon which America was founded. When we think of this word, we usually apply it only to civil governance, but the Bible shows us that there's so much more to it. Let's start with a basic definition: Governance is directing the affairs of an individual or group under established principles and laws. The opposite of governance can be described as anarchy or chaos, where there is a lack of structure, direction, or control. Anarchy implies the absence of authority or established principles to guide behavior and decision-making. In a biblical sense, the absence of governance often leads to disorder and the breakdown of societal harmony, as seen in instances like the time of the judges when "everyone did what was right in their own eyes" (Judges 21:25). This highlights the necessity of God-ordained governance – linked to his fixed moral law – for maintaining order and flourishing. At the heart of this framework is the foundational truth that God created humanity to govern the earth under His authority. In Genesis 1:28, God commands Adam and Eve to “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” Genesis 2:15 highlights their role as stewards: “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” This divine mandate establishes humanity's responsibility to exercise wise and faithful governance over creation. That plays out through four distinct types of governance listed in the Bible: self-government, family government, civil government, and church government. Each plays an important role in God's design for order and flourishing. 1. Self-Government: The Foundation of All GovernanceThe concept of self-government is first introduced in Genesis 3, when God places Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden with a clear mandate: to tend the garden and to abstain from eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:16-17). This command required personal responsibility and moral accountability. When Adam and Eve failed to govern themselves, sin entered the world (Genesis 3:6-7), highlighting the critical role of self-governance in maintaining harmony with God and creation.Self-government is the cornerstone of biblical governance. Proverbs 16:32...

Most people wait until 65 to enjoy life, saving in retirement accounts they can't touch for decades. After working with hundreds of clients, we've learned there's a better way to build wealth while maintaining your current lifestyle. In today's episode, we sit down with Shane Thompson from RP Capital to explore how turnkey real estate investing can create passive income streams and accelerate your path to financial independence. We dive deep into why traditional retirement planning falls short, how to leverage other people's money through infinite banking, and why focusing on cash flow rather than net worth could transform your financial future. We explore practical strategies for building a real estate portfolio without becoming a full-time investor, how to evaluate markets for stable returns, and why passive income gives you the freedom to pursue what truly matters in life. Passive Real Estate Done Right: The turnkey model eliminates common real estate headaches by providing vetted properties, professional management, and established systems. Focus on stable markets with steady growth rather than chasing explosive returns that could crash. The Power of Leverage and Cash Flow: Using tools like infinite banking to finance properties can dramatically increase returns while maintaining control. Focus on monthly cash flow rather than trying to pay off properties early - this creates options and accelerates portfolio growth. From Net Worth to Cash Flow Thinking: Traditional retirement planning focuses on building a nest egg you can't touch for decades. Real estate provides immediate cash flow that can fund lifestyle changes now while appreciating over time. The Compounding Portfolio Strategy: Start with one property generating a few hundred in monthly cash flow. Reinvest gains and leverage equity to acquire more properties over 4-7 years. Eventually, one property can turn into multiple without additional capital. What to listen for:In today's episode of K9 Detection Collaborative, our hosts Robin Greubel, Stacy Barnett, and Crystal Wing discuss the keys to cleaning up your dog's behavior chain to help them stay on track and avoid distractions in the field. When it comes to reinforcing behavior, it's just as important to get clear on when not to train particular habits. Their rule of thumb? Avoid reinforcing tactics during moments of frustration in your dog. It's important to be systematic when training for search & rescue scenarios, setting clear boundaries and expectations for your dog, all while respecting their autonomy so that they can make snap decisions with confidence in high-stakes situations. With Deb Jones's Focus Unified Field Theory as their guide, the Dames of Detection navigate the complexities of canine focus in four areas—external, self, trainer, and task focuses. Understanding these focus types is crucial for managing distractions and maintaining a dog's attention during challenging search tasks. They dive into strategies that build a strong reinforcement system, allowing dogs to handle complex searches without becoming overwhelmed. They also explain why it's crucial to actively train blank areas with the intention of striking a balance between engagement and overwhelm for both handler and dog. Finally, Robin, Stacy, and Crystal define “self-employing” actions, and why it's a good idea to steer clear from reinforcing such behaviors, as well as the keys to nurturing understanding when building on and optimizing your dog's behavior chain.Key Topics:Why You Shouldn't Try Reinforcing Behaviors During Moments of Frustration (00:00)Systematic Searching and Maintaining Your Dog's Autonomy (05:51)When and When Not to Praise Your Dog (10:53)Four Types of Focus (17:52)The Importance of Actively Training Blank Areas (25:50)“Don't Reinforce Them For Self-Employing” (29:30)Building the Desire to do the Job Right (35:13)Building Understanding (41:03)Dames of Detection Takeaways (50:48)Resources:Deb Jones and the F.O.C.U.S Dog Training System: https://k9infocus.com/shiny-new-thoughts-on-focus/ | https://k9infocus.com/Join Robin for her winter webinar series!FENZI WebinarsFENZI CampWe want to hear from you:Check out the K9 Detection Collaborative FB page and comment on the episode post!K9Sensus Foundation can be found on Facebook and Instagram. Are you curious about the power of curiosity itself? If so, this conversation with Emily Aborn, an experienced copywriter, speaker, and podcast host, will draw you in. Emily shares her insights on the art of curiosity marketing—a strategy that builds intrigue by inviting people to wonder, engage, and connect deeper. In our interview, she unveils the process of creating content that is compelling, relatable, and keeps people coming back for more. Key Takeaways: Curiosity Marketing Defined: Emily describes curiosity marketing as the creation of a gap between what we know and what others are curious about. She emphasizes that striking the right balance between curiosity and clarity avoids confusion and keeps audiences engaged and wanting to know more. Knowing Your Audience: Understanding your audience's background is essential. Emily shares that by grasping what your audience already knows, as well as their challenges, you can build content that speaks directly to their interests and keeps them intrigued. Four Types of Curiosity: Emily outlines four curiosity styles—fascinated, empathizer, problem solver, and avoider. These styles provide insight into how individuals engage with content. By identifying your audience's curiosity style, you can create more tailored, compelling content. The Power of Specificity: Using vivid, specific examples creates memorable and engaging content. Specificity resonates with readers by evoking real emotions and imagery, which, as Emily explains, is often what sets human-created content apart from AI-generated content. Leaving Loops Open: Good content doesn't close every loop or answer every question. By inviting readers to draw their own conclusions or reflect, curiosity marketing allows individuals to connect personally with content, making them eager for the next post, episode, or story. Curiosity isn't just about asking questions but about fostering a genuine connection that makes people want to return for more.

With each of the Four Nutriments – edible foods, sense impressions, volition or aspiration, and consciousness – the Buddha gave a little story which the presenters explore and bring into the reality of our times. The ensuing conversation touches many topics and ideas, like how and why to invest in our spiritual dimension; individual and collective consciousness; shifting consciousness, generating community and a fairer society; practicing moderation; cultivating compassion; habit energies; rebuilding our connection to food; changing the way stories are told; suffering as a bell of mindfulness; and more. Brother Phap Huu shares deeply about experiencing burnout; speaking our minds; and adapting Buddhist teaching for each new generation. Jo complements this episode's theme with personal stories and a new approach to what it is to be courageous. And if young people can invest in it earlier, then the future has a greater hope and a more wonderful and sustainable livelihood that we can lead ourselves towards.” “Consuming is not just what we eat and drink but what we listen to, what we smell, what we taste, and so on.” “It’s not that wanting a state of peace means that we can suddenly have peace; we have to nurture the peace inside of us.” “Mindfulness gives us the lens of awareness to go inwards and see what we are consuming on a daily basis. What is intentional and what are we consuming that we’re not even aware of?” “Our way of being is also food for elements that are outside of us.” “We’re creating a cacophony of thoughts, feelings, and actions that form an individual basis, then create a collective. Often, people don’t feel that their individual behavior has an impact on the collective; often, they think that the collective is the only thing influencing them.” “Trust the seeds that you plant, but don’t expect them to grow right away.” “The Buddha says every action has an impact on the past, the present, and the future. So our actions today actually have an impact 1,000 years later.” “When we practice a vegetarian or a vegan diet, it is because we are aspiring to cultivate our compassion.” “Vulnerability opens support.” “We know that habit energy is not ours alone: it’s society’s habit, it is our ancestors’ habit. So if we come from a family that has addictions, we know we have addictions in us.” “Once we know where food comes from, our gratitude manifests; it is born. And when you have gratitude, food automatically tastes better.” “The Buddha says that our world is lived by our shared consciousness.” “The work that we are doing in Plum Village is helping, wanting to shift consciousness, and showing that love is possible and that love is there and that peace is action.” “Sense impressions are also teachers. And this is why, for us, the Dharma is not just spoken Dharma, but the way we live, how we show up. That is a sense impression. That is a teaching in itself.” “When it’s all about the money, we lose our ethical compass and we lose our connection; we lose our sense of responsibility and accountability. And if money is the object, then there’s going to be a lot of suffering.” “Why don’t we like good news? Because we’re so conditioned to suffering.” “The Buddha says that we have to reflect and shine our light onto our views, that we are striving towards. And if that view, goal, or aspiration is destroying our well-being, we have to have the courage to walk away.” “Courage is being prepared to not be like everybody else.” “What is our worldview? Are we limited? Are we expanding? I think coming to retreats like Plum Village, or traveling, is so helpful for expanding our consciousness that maybe our way of thinking about what is right is very limited. That’s why, when we learn about ethics, we have to be very open. And in Buddhism, one of the greatest foundations is openness, because what we think is right may be totally different in a different culture. So, consciousness: we have to allow it to expand, be flexible, transform, grow.”

Did you spend too much this Labor Day weekend? Yeah...us too. Marketers are smart and they're only getting smarter. These days, there is so much targeted marketing based on what we like on Instagram, what we're watching on TikTok, or even (more creepy) the conversations we're having with friends. Sometimes it can be really difficult not to just click buy when the recommendations are SO spot on. So, how do we resist? And how do we know when it's really the best time to buy the mattress, or the TV, or the couch, or whatever is featured in that back-to-school special? Mindy Weinstein, marketing and psychology expert, and author of: “The Power of Scarcity, Leveraging Urgency and Demand to Influence Customer Decisions,” says it's all about figuring out if you actually need that thing or if you're a target of what she calls scarcity marketing. Takeaways: Scarcity is a powerful marketing tool that taps into our primal instincts and influences our decision-making process. Scarcity triggers a sense of urgency and fear of missing out (FOMO), leading to impulsive purchases. There are four types of scarcity: demand-related scarcity, supply-related scarcity, limited edition scarcity, and time-related scarcity. Scarcity can be used by individuals to improve their personal and professional lives. Understanding the tactics of scarcity marketing can help make smarter financial decisions.
