Talking everything sports with The Sports Fanatics, Ross Peterson and Chris Williams, weekdays Monday-Friday, 4pm-7pm
To kick off the final hour of Fanatics today Trent Condon reports live from the high school baseball state tournament... which somehow leads into a conversation about Dyersville, spirits and ghosts. The guys also laugh at Kyrie Irving taking a shot at his own athletic shoes. Then Charlies Bales, the co-General Manager of the Des Moines Menace joins Bruno as they talk about the team playing in the USL2 Championship for the second time in franchise history and hosting it for the first time ever.
Derek from New Sharon kicks off the 4:00 hour pointing out that Oklahoma and Texas players may have headhunters out for them this season and gives away a couple of surprising universities he can't stand. Chris then breaks news that Russell Westbrook may be traded... and to a team that's already got some star power. Chris and Ross get into more Big 12 and college football news before Bruno and Mindy come in to promote an upcoming event. To end the hour it's official: the SEC welcomes in Oklahoma and Texas.
Ross Peterson is back from his trip to Wrigley Field and after filling Chris Williams, Erick Zamora and the audience in on how that went the guys get into the latest of Bob Bowlsby's tactics, development of the Big 12 and college athletics in general. Chris breaks that it is being reported Max Scherzer is being dealt to the San Diego Padres but Zamora, the resident Dodgers fan, explains why he's ok that LA lost out on Scherzer. Then Jay Jordan joins the program to chat about what is going on with the Big 12 and college athletics.
Live from Ken's Not So Secret Speakeasy Chris Williams chats with Andrew Downs about everything going on with conference realignment as they focus on the Cease & Desist Letter that the Big 12 hits ESPN with. They also get into even more recent details such as alleged ESPN dealings and Big 12 commissioner, a guy Chris wishes would be more of a shark, does come out and bite as he claims he has evidence of some wrongdoings.
The 4 @ 4 kicks off talking about the football field at Kinnick Stadium changing its field's name and Chris Williams and Andrew Downs explain why that's a good thing and the whooping USA gave Iran in Olympic basketball. From Ken's Not So Secret Speakeasy Chris chats with Bruno and friends about Iowa Drinks Whiskey event. Then after more NCAA conference realignment Chris chats with Tyler Courtney in the weekly Knoxville Raceway segment.
Chris Williams and Trent Condon, a man who is despised by much of Cyclone nation for voicing the opinion that the Big Ten won't welcome in ISU, chat from an Iowa Drinks Whiskey event at Ken's Not So Secret Speakeasy. They get into a lot of college realignment thoughts and take calls for most of the first hour. They also put together an all MLB BetRivers parlay.
The guys keep rolling calls and thoughts on Simone Biles dropping out of the team portion of the gymnastics and that leads to a discussion about mental health, stress, and how much gymnastics has changed in 75 years as Ross brings up Aussie Man Reviews. They also make comparisons to Tom Brady as a caller pointed out Brady is the GOAT because he never gave up on his team, but the comparison was made of physical health getting a pass but mental health is not.
Chris Williams joins in studio to turn it back into a Honkey-Tonk Tuesday and he and Ross chat with Brad Howe about the West Virginia perspective of the Big 12 Conference situation and college athletics in general, including a near fist fight with the Big 12 ADs. Then the guys take calls, some tough to hear from people with a variety of opinions, on Simone Biles dropping out of team Olympics competition.
Scott Reister of KCCI joins in the first segment and kicks off the show giving his thoughts on the state softball tournament, promoting A Shot in the Dark Golf Tournament at Willow Creek and gives his vantage point of the Big 12 situation as a Texas alum. Then he, Ross Peterson and Erick Zamora break down their thoughts on Aaron Rodgers and Deshaun Watson. After talking about covering high school sports Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register talks all things baseball including the Chicago Cubs, the Minnesota Twins, the trade deadline, Max Scherzer and the Iowa Cubs. To end the hour Ross discusses Alex Gordon's unusual first pitch at Kaufmann Stadium the other night.
Erick Zamora starts off the hour with some awful news in the hockey world before explaining how eight years ago the college hockey world was flipped upside down but there are a number of comparisons to the Big 12 situation, with Iowa State currently eerily in a similar spot to how his St. Cloud State was then. He also gets into the MLB trade deadline approaching and how he doesn't want his Dodgers to make any big moves. Erick wraps up the show talking about more of the college athletics uncertainty.
Chris and Ross get into another hour of talk about the what ifs, the ramifications and the ideal dream scenarios of the callers. Chris also brings up a meteor, which of course brings up some intelligent conversation about Uranus.
The guys keep the college football realignment conversation going, keeping callers and new ideas top of mind. Several callers suggestion a European soccer style relegation system and they debate that and Zamora points out that while the NCAA model is broken, that doesn't mean it doesn't work.
The Big 12 Missile Crisis is the heavy topic of the day and with Ross back he weighs in with his thoughts on the situation. The guys open up the phone lines and talk to callers about their thoughts, ideas and concerns. Somehow the conversation also runs into early Bush albums and the Latvian volleyball team.
To kick off the 5:00 hour Chris has an abbreviated Quick Hits segment before welcoming in the Des Moines Register's Chad Leistikow discussing Big Ten Media Days and a look at the Hawkeyes. Chris takes more calls on the Missile Crisis and the Fanatics end the week playing the audio from Iowa Football Coach Kirk Ferentz at Big Ten Media Days.
Chris Williams keeps the calls, tweets and analysis going with the Big 12 Missile Crisis and brings in a few friends to discuss it. Scott Dochterman from the Athletic to discuss Big Ten Media Days and the landscape of college football and the hour gets closed with Pete Mundo from Heartland College Sports with more on the Missile Crisis.
Chris Williams is joined by Andrew Downs and they chat about the Big 12 Missile Crisis 3.0 and fallout from what Oklahoma and Texas have done, not to mention how it will affect Iowa State. Chip Brown from Horns 247 gives his thoughts on this whole situation and producer Erick Zamora poses a couple big questions for Chris regarding Iowa State football's future. The guys take calls and also talk about what all this could mean for Matt Campbell.
Travis HInes joins Chris Williams to chat about the upcoming Missile Crisis in college athletics and how it could affect the landscape of all sports as well as debate if football should branch off into it's own entity. Then Chris bets against his and the BetRivers Parlay Contestant's favorite teams. Finally Erick Zamora reacts to the Seattle Kraken Expansion Draft and compares this expansion to expansions in other sports.
Chris kicks off the 4 at 4 with the big story of the week and the potential ripple effects if Oklahoma and Texas leave for the SEC and what the landscape of college football and sports currently looks like. Then Teresa Ceretti from el Bait Shop joins to talk beer and upcoming events. To end the hour the Des Moines Register's Chad Leistikow chats with Chris from Big Ten Media Days and hints at PJ Fleck addressing an issue he had with Kirk Ferentz.
Chris Williams kicks off the show with Andrew Downs as they talk about the circulating reports that Oklahoma and Texas are Eastbound (SEC) and Down and explain why this feels like so much more than a money or TV push but rather the first of a series of moves. They discuss the upcoming Big 12 Board of Directors and ADs meeting tonight and listen to audio from Big Ten Media Day. Then Taylor Gaspar Estes the Managing Editor of Horns 247 from 247 Sports discusses this from a Texas standpoint and to end the first hour Chris welcomes Erick Zamora back and they discuss the State Softball Tournament and other IGHSAU state tournament events.
