Así vemos que cuando Antonio Flores, Alcalde Mayor de la Vega, quiso quitarle a Pablo Hernández una india yucaya, “éste la trajo a Santiago y hasta se casó con ella...” »Fue muy sonado el dramático caso del distinguido vecino de Santiago, Alonso de Sandoval, que, enamorado de una esclava de Bartolomé Rodríguez, de la Concepción de la Vega, fue acusado de mandarlo a acuchillar por un esclavo negro. Dicen los documentos textualmente “que aquella india le pesaba mucho”. »También andaban detrás de las indias yucayas en Santiago el vecino de la villa Alonso Pérez Herrero, quien le cambió a Sancho de Salcedo una nombrada Olaya; Alonso García, minero de Ayllón, en Guaurabo, que le compró a Belalcázar, a Catalinilla; García Gallego, que obtuvo otra yucaya de Juan de Zamora y la traspasó, después, a Ruiz de Tapia; Diego Morales, que compró a Elvira; Marcos y Juan Méndez, que compraron a Juanica; Francisco de Ceballos, distinguido vecino, que compró a Leonorica; y Gonzalo Núñez, que compró a otra india yucaya de la que no se da el nombre. »Para terminar, es interesante llamar la atención sobre que los españoles de Santiago convivieron maritalmente, y hasta se casaron, con estas indias yucayas, las cuales, por lo que puede deducirse de las noticias de la época, provocaron una gran conmoción en aquella “sociedad de hombres solitarios” que fue la de la Conquista. »Abundante sangre de estas impresionantes mujeres debe correr por las venas de los santiagueros de hoy... Aquellos presuntos «caballeros» de Santiago llegaban a poseer y a «conquistar» a sus mujeres o futuras esposas de igual forma en que poseían y domaban a sus preciados caballos. Al tal Alonso de Sandoval no le pesaba tomar como esclava a una mujer, privándola de su libertad y tratándola igual que a uno de sus caballos; por el contrario, lo que le pesaba era que esa indígena le perteneciera a otro hombre, tanto que mandó matarlo para poder quedarse con ella. Para él y sus «caballeros de armas», casarse con cualquiera de esas «indias» era hacerles un gran favor, ya que tenían el poder para obligarlas a vivir con ellos sin los beneficios del matrimonio. Y para colmo de males, todo eso lo hacían como presuntos «cristianos», a pesar de que fue Cristo quien nos dio la regla de oro, que nos manda que, en todo, tratemos a los demás tal y como queremos que nos traten a nosotros... lo cual incluye a toda mujer, cualquiera que sea su condición social.3 Gracias a Dios, ya hace bastante que no aprobamos, como sociedad, aquellos valores retrógrados de los conquistadores... Every year, the Multnomah County Library chooses one book they hope the whole city will read. Between January and April, the Library, and their partner organizations, host events based around the themes of the book, and they distribute thousands of free copies—thanks to the Library Foundation—to readers of all ages from across the county. At Literary Arts, our role is to bring the author to town for a talk in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. The 2025 Everybody Reads book was the memoir Solito by Javier Zamora. Written from the perspective of his nine-year-old self, Solito is a gripping and beautiful account of Zamora's three-thousand-mile journey from a small village in El Salvador to his new home in United States. Epic in scope and intimate in detail, it's a book about the family one comes from, the family one longs for, and the family one makes. Zamora conjures all the wonder, fear and imaginative capacity of his young self; clear-eyed in his depictions of cruelty and danger, insistent on recognizing kindness. He also renders his journey with vivid detail with breathtaking lyricism, paying close attention to the power of language – this comes as no surprise, given that Zamora is also an award-winning poet. The writer Sandra Cisneros said, “I have waited decades for a memoir like Solito.” But, Solito isn't simply a story of a migrant's harrowing journey, it's the story of a writer becoming a writer. It is also one of the most important American stories of our time. “Poetry and history were the first tools I had to begin to explain my life so far away from the land that watched me be born and grow up for the first nine years of my life.” Javier Zamora was born in La Herradura, El Salvador in 1990. When he was a year old, his father fled El Salvador due to the US-funded Salvadoran Civil War (1980-1992). His mother followed her husband's footsteps in 1995 when Javier was about to turn five. Zamora was left at the care of his grandparents who helped raise him until he migrated to the US when he was nine. His first poetry collection, Unaccompanied, explores some of these themes. In his debut New York Times bestselling memoir, SOLITO, Javier retells his nine-week odyssey across Guatemala, Mexico, and eventually through the Sonoran Desert. He travelled unaccompanied by boat, bus, and foot. After a coyote abandoned his group in Oaxaca, Javier managed to make it to Arizona with the aid of other migrants. Zamora is the winner of a 2024 Whiting Fellowship and the 2022 LA Times-Christopher Isherwood Prize. He holds fellowships from CantoMundo, Colgate University (Olive B. O’Connor), MacDowell, Macondo, the National Endowment for the Arts, Poetry Foundation (Ruth Lilly), Stanford University (Stegner), and Yaddo. He is the recipient of a 2018-2019 Radcliffe Fellowship at Harvard University, a 2017 Lannan Literary Fellowship, the 2017 Narrative Prize, the 2016 Barnes & Noble Writer for Writers Award for his work in the Undocupoets Campaign.

Felipe Camino Galicia de la Rosa un poeta que enseñó Literatura tanto en España como en EE. UU., es más conocido como León Felipe. John Manuel Kennedy Traverso interpreta uno de sus poemas preferidos de este poeta que murió exiliado en México en el año el 18 de septiembre de 1968. El poema: ¡Qué Lástima! León Felipe nació el 11 de abril, de 1884, en Tábara, Zamora. Es de la Generación del 27′, escribió también algunas obras de teatro, y es conocido a nivel mundial por haber sido traductor de la obra del poeta estadounidense Son muchos los piesan que León Felipe debe ser considerado y recordado mucho más de lo que es actualmente, debido a que León Felipe ha superado muchas dificultades, puesto que el poeta determinó su independencia de todas las corrientes literarias de su tiempo y en su condición de exiliado escribió bellos poemas de suma importancia.

This was a very inspirational conversation and I was very curious to learn about what you was doing today. Let's get started. Hello and welcome to this new podcast episode. Today I'm talking to Priscilla Zamora. Welcome, Priscilla. [00:01:41] Priscilla Zamora: Thank you so much for having me. [00:01:43] Erno Hannink: Yeah, and I'm wondering, 'cause we met on a conversation where we talked about, well the common topic was about, the transition of the. Systems of inner development goals that the foundation and all the, everything around that. And you explained to me in a later conversation that you are now living in Dubai. How did you get to Dubai? Because you're not coming from Dubai. [00:02:11] Priscilla Zamora: no. Yeah, I mean, today I'm living between three continents. I do have, I'm originally from Chile, so I have a lot of projects in my family. My networks are most of them in Latin America still. And on 2025 I find out about this community called Emerge Lakefront, which is very related to the inner development goals. And I stayed there for five months. but I've been related to the IDGs for almost three years when I co-founded with two other friends, the first half in Teale regarding to that, and I've been in Dubai a couple of times before, but it wasn't until January of this year that I came for like a personal development conference. And I was supposed to be here for a week, which ended up being three months. And it actually ended up, getting a. Residency and, coming to live here and having a base related to, I think that environments that support entrepreneurship in a fast paced environment. I don't think that there's a place in the world today like Dubai and also regarding too many biases that people may have. There is a lot of personal development, inner work and transformational changes, structural changes happening here to a lot of the conversations. So I love to have that mix. A little bit of Europe, the Middle East and Latin America. [00:03:33] Erno Hannink: And, you were going there for a self development project. It's probably not a project, but what ignited that? What started that [00:03:43] Priscilla Zamora: there? Well, I think that in the personal development slash spiritual path, however, one wants to call it, 'cause for me, are very related. You find different authors, networks, platforms. Experiences and for me, one that helped me a lot in the last, I would say five, seven years has been Mindvalley, which is a platform for personal development, but also has different approaches on business, physical health and mindfulness. And they had this conference called Future Human in January on 2025. And that was the reason on, I don't know, I think six months before on 2024 when I just read it, I was like, I have to be there. I don't know how I'm gonna get to Dubai and be there in January. But it was like I, I always have this expression of when something pulls you, like you read something and it's like, oh, I have to be there. That happened to me with Future Human and Little, I know that was going to be like a series of react, a chain reaction on many things that will happen in my life. It was the same how I read about lakefront on LinkedIn. It was the same, like I had to be there. I'm trying to lead my life now that way, like following a little bit of calling intuition, something that is not always intellectual. we can go a little bit more on that, but, that's how I gotta Dubai and that's how, why I'm here. [00:05:10] Erno Hannink: Okay, so the title piques my interest, right? So Future Human. What did you learn there? [00:05:20] Priscilla Zamora: It's been, I think that as many people maybe I developed my life very related to academic achievement, societal expectation.

En Haïti, l'Unicef estime que les enrôlements d'enfants par les gangs ont triplé en un an et qu'aujourd'hui, les moins de 18 ans représenteraient jusqu'à la moitié de leurs membres. Plus de 80% de Port-au-Prince sont aux mains des gangs. Mais qui compose ces groupes criminels ? Comment sont-ils recrutés ? Et peuvent-ils en sortir ? D'après les chiffres de l'Unicef, 30 à 50 % d'entre eux ont moins de 18 ans. Ils sont donc des milliers à avoir été recrutés de force. Et seule une poignée d'entre eux parvient parfois à en sortir. Dans la capitale, un « centre de transit » pour enfants et adolescents les accompagne pour les aider à se réinsérer dans la société haïtienne. Un reportage de Justine Fontaine et Achim Lippold. Au-delà de ces enfants qui échappent aux gangs, les autres ne sont pas non plus épargnés par les violences. Au contraire. Beaucoup sont traumatisés, non seulement par les groupes criminels mais aussi par la police. C'est ce qu'explique Patrick Joseph, qui œuvre en tant que travailleur social dans plusieurs quartiers sous contrôle des gangs. Il a déménagé avec sa famille à quatre reprises ces dernières années. « Ce qui est difficile, c'est de se réveiller le matin sans savoir à quoi s'attendre ni ce que l'enfant va voir sur le chemin. Un jour, mon fils a vu trois, quatre cadavres sur la route de l'école. Quand je suis allé le chercher, il m'a demandé si l'on avait retiré les corps qu'il avait vus par terre », raconte Patrick Joseph au micro de RFI. La question de la police haïtienne est justement abordée par Le Nouvelliste, qui appelle à se pencher sur son fonctionnement. Il faut sauver son âme pour sauver la République, estime le rédacteur en chef du quotidien, Frantz Duval. Nouveau revers judiciaire pour Donald Trump La presse du continent nous conduit aussi aux États-Unis, où Donald Trump vient d'enregistrer une nouvelle défaite sur le terrain judiciaire. Un grand jury de Washington a refusé mardi (10 février 2026) d'inculper six élus démocrates, deux sénateurs et quatre membres de la Chambre qui, en novembre 2025, avaient appelé l'armée à désobéir « aux ordres illégaux ». Cela avait déclenché la fureur de Donald Trump qui les avait accusés sur son réseau Truth Social de trahison, et réclamé la peine de mort. Et aux États-Unis, aujourd'hui, quand le président ordonne, le ministère de la Justice exécute. « De nos jours, écrit le Washington Post, personne au ministère de la Justice n'a la réputation ou le courage de dissuader efficacement le président de donner des ordres contre-productifs ou illégaux. C'est pourquoi les procureurs ont tenté de faire ce que Trump leur demandait. » Le FBI a commencé à enquêter. Le bureau du procureur de Washington a tenté de faire inculper les six élus. Il a affirmé qu'ils avaient enfreint une loi interdisant toute atteinte à la loyauté, au moral ou à la discipline des forces armées. Sauf qu'une telle loi, estime le Washington Post, « violerait évidemment le Premier Amendement », celui sur la liberté d'expression, « si elle criminalisait les discours politiques exhortant les membres de l'armée à respecter la loi ». « La provocation politique n'est pas un crime, rappelle le quotidien. Les membres du Congrès doivent pouvoir critiquer l'utilisation de l'armée par le pouvoir exécutif. ». Échec donc. Ce n'est pas la première fois qu'un grand jury rejette une telle demande d'inculpation. C'est même de plus en plus fréquent depuis le retour de Donald Trump à la Maison Blanche. C'est ce que relève le New York Times. Pourtant, rappelle le quotidien, ces jurys composés de citoyens ordinaires étaient jusque-là plutôt connus pour suivre les demandes des procureurs. Ou, comme l'écrit ironiquement The Nation, pour leur capacité à « inculper un sandwich au jambon ». Mais ça, c'était avant. Aujourd'hui, titre l'hebdomadaire, « les grands jurys sauvent la démocratie ». Car avant l'épisode de mardi, d'autres grands jurys locaux ont refusé d'inculper la procureure générale de New York ou des citoyens surveillant les opérations de l'ICE à Chicago. Au Venezuela, le pari d'Harry Sargeant et l'espoir d'une jeune femme En visite au Venezuela, le ministre états-unien de l'Énergie Chris Wright a promis une « hausse spectaculaire » de la production de pétrole. Cela ferait bien les affaires du magnat de l'Énergie Harry Sargeant, qui lorgne depuis des années sur les réserves du pays et qui est donc en passe de remporter son pari. Le Wall Street Journal consacre un long portrait à ce milliardaire de 68 ans qui, avant le raid du 3 janvier conduisant à l'enlèvement de Nicolas Maduro, était le seul à faire régulièrement la navette entre la résidence floridienne de Donald Trump et le palais présidentiel vénézuélien. Au point que le président déchu le surnommait affectueusement « abuelo » - « grand-père ». Au point aussi que l'activiste vénézuélien Thor Halvorssen le qualifie de « super-méchant » qui donne la priorité à son profit personnel. Toujours au Venezuela, le Parlement doit adopter ce jeudi (12 février 2026) une loi d'amnistie historique. Cela redonne de l'espoir à Angel Gomez. Elle se souvient de ce matin du 15 avril 2022, où elle avait regardé sa mère se préparer pour aller au travail. Ses bottes bien lustrées, cet insigne de la police municipale de Zamora cousu sur la manche de son uniforme. Elle pensait assister à ce moment où sa mère se transforme en super-héroïne pour affronter sa journée. C'était en fait le début d'un cauchemar qui dure depuis quatre ans. Et que nous raconte TalCual. La mère d'Angel Gomez a été inculpée notamment d'abus de pouvoir et de corruption. Treize chefs d'accusation au total, en lien avec une sombre affaire d'expropriation ordonnée par le maire de Zamora et de lutte politique. Quatre ans, donc, pendant lesquels Angel Gomez s'est tue par peur des représailles. Jusqu'au 8 janvier 2026, lorsque le président de l'Assemblée nationale a promis la libération des prisonniers politiques. Alors Angel Gomez a pris son téléphone pour raconter son histoire sur les réseaux sociaux. C'était à son tour de sauver sa super-héroïne. Aujourd'hui, à l'heure où l'Assemblée s'apprête à voter, elle se prend donc à rêver.
