Munaf Manji and Dave Essler talk betting for Thursday. Munaf Manji and Dave Essler open Thursday's episode by working through a three game getaway day slate before turning their attention to two of the more closely watched NFL win totals on the board. The night's headline game is the Field of Dreams matchup between the Phillies and Twins in Dyersville, Iowa, streaming on Netflix, with Aaron Nola starting for Philadelphia against Taj Bradley for Minnesota. Rain is the real storyline here, with chances climbing through the evening and threatening to shorten or postpone the game entirely, a factor the hosts believe is keeping the total pinned at eight and a half even as public money piles onto the over. Dave leans the under and toward Minnesota given his skepticism of Nola's recent form, while Munaf backs up the same concerns with Nola's home and road numbers this season. From there the show moves to Rangers at Angels, where Jacob deGrom's rough recent stretch against Houston and the White Sox opens the door for a high variance read on Walbert Urena and a shaky Los Angeles bullpen, with Dave favoring an Angels first five look and a Rangers team total over, while Munaf reveals he is the featured dollar capper on Pregame.com with a three star play on the game. The nightcap pits Shane Drohan against Roki Sasaki as the Brewers visit the Dodgers, with a Freddie Freeman injury scare from the previous night hanging over the Los Angeles lineup. Both hosts lean under the total, with Dave adding the Brewers on the run line given Milwaukee's bullpen depth and Drohan's tendency to limit home runs. After a quick pass through the day's earlier getaway games, including a Red Sox and Blue Jays pitching matchup between Payton Tolle and Max Scherzer, the conversation shifts fully into football. The Philadelphia Eagles carry a win total of ten and a half after an eleven and six season and a second straight NFC East title, and both hosts take the under, pointing to the trade of A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots, first year offensive coordinator Sean Mannion learning on the job, lingering questions in the secondary beyond Cooper DeJean, and a stronger projected NFC East. They still see Philadelphia as a ten win caliber team capable of winning the division, with DeVonta Smith, Dontayvion Wicks, and rookie Makai Lemon absorbing a larger share of the passing game behind Saquon Barkley. The Detroit Lions carry the same ten and a half win total after a nine and eight season that saw the best point differential in the NFC North undone by a losing divisional record. Dave leans under given injuries to both projected starting safeties and a tougher slate of divisional quarterbacks, while Munaf takes the over, betting on Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Aidan Hutchinson returning to full strength on defense. The two hosts close the show with their daily best bets, Dave backing the Green Bay Packers minus three and a half in the first half of their preseason opener against Pittsburgh, and Munaf taking the over in Texans at Chargers behind Houston's deep receiver room and Mike McDaniel's new offense in Los Angeles. Listeners are reminded to use promo code NFL50 for fifty dollars off a full NFL season access package on Pregame.com, and the crew previews tomorrow's episode, which continues the NFL win total series with a look at the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. After that long stop in the Hawkeye State, the guys turn their attention to creating an "All-Teen" prospect team in advance of the new Top 100 coming this week, headlined by Jesús Made of the Brewers and the A's Leo De Vries, then break down a trio of MLB debuts, all in the AL Central: the Twins' Kaelen Culpepper, the Guardians' Angel Genao and White Sox lefty Hagen Smith. They finish up with a question from the Mailbag asking to compare Minnesota top pick Vahn Lackey to its 2001 No. 1 overall selection, Joe Mauer. Learn more about your ad choices. You likely recognize the quote “If you build it, he will come.” It took off in the American lexicon from the 1989 Iowa baseball film, "Field of Dreams." People have been coming to that Iowa baseball diamond in the middle of a cornfield for more than 30 years now — to visit the movie site. Now, Major League Baseball and the town of Dyersville, Iowa have built something new. It's a professional field alongside the film set. On Thursday evening the Twins and the Phillies will face off on it, and the game will stream live on Netflix. The St. Paul Saints will play at the field Tuesday evening against the Iowa Cubs. Jacque Rahe knows the field well. She's the executive director of the Dyersville Economic Development Corporation and has been helping manage the “Field of Dreams” site for years. She talked to MPR News host Nina Moini about the first game at the new field, and why “Field of Dreams” has resonated with fans for so long.

"Field of Dreams," directed by Phil Alden Robinson and released in 1989, is a film that transcends the boundaries of sports and delves into the heart of human experience. Starring Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta, and Burt Lancaster in his final film role, this cinematic gem explores themes of redemption, the power of belief, and the importance of following one's dreams. Set against the backdrop of America's favourite pastime, baseball, "Field of Dreams" is not just a movie about the sport; it's a poignant story about family, reconciliation, and the magic that can happen when you dare to dream.Plot SummaryThe story begins with Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner), a novice Iowa farmer who lives with his wife, Annie (Amy Madigan), and their daughter, Karin (Gaby Hoffmann). Ray is haunted by the unresolved issues with his late father, John Kinsella, a baseball enthusiast who dreamed of becoming a professional player. Ray's peaceful life takes a dramatic turn when he hears a mysterious voice whispering, "If you build it, he will come." Despite the absurdity of the message, Ray interprets it as an instruction to build a baseball diamond in his cornfield, believing it will somehow bring back his father's spirit.Cinematography and VisualsJohn Lindley's cinematography captures the bucolic beauty of the Iowa landscape, transforming it into a timeless, almost mythical place where the impossible becomes possible. The scenes of the baseball diamond at dusk, with its perfectly manicured grass and ethereal lighting, evoke a sense of nostalgia and wonder. The visual contrast between the golden cornfields and the lush green of the baseball field symbolises the intersection of reality and fantasy, grounding the film's magical realism in a tangible world.Character DevelopmentKevin Costner's portrayal of Ray Kinsella is a perfect blend of earnestness and vulnerability. His journey from scepticism to belief is the emotional core of the film. Costner's performance is subtle yet powerful, conveying Ray's internal struggle and ultimate redemption with a quiet intensity. Amy Madigan's Annie is a supportive and fiery counterpart, providing comic relief and grounding the story in reality. Her unwavering belief in Ray's vision is a testament to the strength of their relationship.James Earl Jones delivers a standout performance as Terence Mann, a reclusive author who becomes an unlikely ally in Ray's quest. Initially cynical and disillusioned, Mann's character undergoes a transformation that parallels Ray's, culminating in a poignant speech about the enduring power of baseball. Ray Liotta's portrayal of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson is haunting and enigmatic, embodying the unresolved injustices of the past. In his final role, Burt Lancaster brings a touching grace to the character of Dr. Archibald "Moonlight" Graham, a man whose dreams of playing baseball were never realised.Themes and Symbolism"Field of Dreams" has rich themes that resonate deeply with audiences. The film explores the concept of redemption, not just for individuals but for entire communities. The ghostly baseball players who emerge from the cornfield represent not only the past legends but also the dreams and aspirations that never came to fruition. Ray's act of building the baseball field becomes a form of penance, a way to atone for his estrangement from his father and to honour the unfulfilled dreams of others. The film also delves into belief and the courage to follow one's dreams, even when they seem irrational or impossible. Ray's leap of faith in building the baseball diamond is a powerful metaphor for the risks we take in pursuing our passions. The voice that guides Ray is never fully explained, adding to the film's mystical quality and leaving the interpretation open to the audience.Historical and Cultural Significance"Field of Dreams" is steeped in American cultural history, particularly the lore of baseball. Including "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and the Black Sox Scandal of 1919 adds historical depth to the story. The film pays homage to baseball as a unifying force in American culture, a sport that connects generations and embodies the nation's spirit. The movie's release in 1989 coincided with a renewed interest in baseball films, with other notable releases like "Major League" and "Eight Men Out." However, "Field of Dreams" stands out for its introspective and philosophical approach, appealing to sports fans and those who appreciate good human drama.Impact and LegacyOver three decades since its release, "Field of Dreams" has cemented its status as a classic, continually referenced in popular culture and often cited as one of the greatest sports movies ever made.
