But first, he checks in with TommyFreezePops (Tom Carroll) for this week's edition of the “Opening Kick” (01:16 – 06:04). With the 2021 NFL season only hours away, the COVID-19 vaccination rollout in the U.S. is still front-of-mind for many around the football world. Morten weighs in, urging Americans to get vaccinated. We then move to our interview with Roger Goodell, where he discusses a wide range of topics: why he's uncomfortable being called “the most powerful man in sports” (06:34); his excitement level as the league returns to full capacity across the board (07:40); reflecting back on a challenging 2020, and why he thinks it might be the proudest he has ever been to be commissioner (10:58); why one of his biggest regrets in life was never pursuing a college football career, as he was a star athlete in high school (14:25); going from an intern at the NFL league offices to commissioner of the league (14:55); his great respect for both Pete Rozelle and Paul Tagliabue, and their differing leadership styles (16:40); why he believes relocating an NFL team should be hard (19:34); the importance of globalizing the game of American football, and why he doesn't think a franchise will call London home for the foreseeable future (22:04); why there's never been a better time to be a football fan, and why the NFL views legal sports betting as a way to grow their audience (25:52); the many positives of adding a 17th game to the regular season (32:11); Morten pitches some rule changes to his old friend (33:39); the brilliance of Tom Brady (40:21); and this week's edition of “The Name Game,” featuring Paul Tagliabue, Pete Rozelle, Adam Silver, Rob Manfred, Gary Bettman, Jerry Jones and Robert Kraft (47:26).Then we move to this week's edition of “Morten's Fast 5,” where our Hall of Famer makes picks for the five biggest games of the football weekend (57:46 – 01:03:10). Negotiations will continue and they will hopefully work on keeping the A's in Oakland. A's president Dave Kaval didn't sound as optimistic with the 6-1 approval vote and Steve explains why. MLB and Rob Manfred said recently that the A's moving is a real legit possibility if things can't be figured out in Oakland. In this re-heat of a 2019 episode, Bobby and Alex discuss their jealousy for the way that other sports dominate holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, and try to envision how baseball could do the same. What holiday should we choose? Would it turn into tanks rolling across the outfield no matter what? How much should we invoice Rob Manfred for in consulting fees?    Who doesn't love former Mizzou pitcher Max Scherzer?  He's gifted, smart, fiery and will grind until the job is done.  Scherzer has decided to grind on MLB commish Rob Manfred, umpires and even Phillies manager Joe Girardi.  Scherzer dropped his glove and hat and unbuckled his pants mocking the new substance checking system on Tuesday night and it was EPIC!    Royals pitches got checked too, and while it's too early, some stud pitchers have struggled already knowing they will get checked.  Gerrit Cole of the Yankees walked a bunch of Royals as KC scored 6 and beat the Yankees.  It's going to be interesting to see if getting rid of a substance called Spider Tack creates more offense.   In Virginia, a school board meeting is chaotic as parents are fighting back against crazy liberal board members.  This meeting featured arrests, a suspended teacher and left over 200 parents that signed up to be heard being silenced.  Public Schools are ground zero in the fight to keep America great.

Gerrit Cole was very good for 8 innings and then further voiced his frustration with MLB's stupid new sticky substance rules. Cashman had some interesting quotes about Boone. Giancarlo is trying to play the outfield next month. Yankee Stadium is re-opening with full capacity on Friday. We talk about all that and more including a breakdown of how stupid Rob Manfred continues to be on this episode. Outro Song: “Life Here Now Forever” (Via APM Music Library)

We Gotta Believe

We've got Kevin Pillar hitting 2 HRs with his bloody bat like he's Negan from 'The Walking Dead,' Rob Manfred and the owners changing baseballs and conspiring against the pitchers AND hitters hitting free agency and absolutely no facts to back any of it up! It's been a wild week since our last episode and the team has only played two games. We had David Peterson take another step towards becoming the new Steven Matz, we had the offense wake up in a BIG WAY to salvage the 2-game series with the Orioles and we had conspiracies galore. We've been saying it all along, but this team's DNA just knows how to win. When you can turn the page that easily from a loss to an inferior team and not dwell on the past, that's when you know you've got staying power. Bench players, hurt super stars, unsung heroes- doesn't matter, winners win. Jacob deGrom rightfully gets all the hype for being the best pitcher in baseball, but in the shadow of his greatness sits not one, but two elite, all-star caliber pitchers who are in the top 15 in ERA. Taijuan Walker is not only pitching like an ace, he's the steal of the offseason. Trevor Bauer is making $102 million for 3 years, while Walker is making 23 pitching to a lower ERA. He's been a revelation to the rotation and a much needed boost during these tough times. Speaking of the times, the team has held first place for 40+ days and that number isn't resetting any time soon. Even with the June Swoon Gauntlet, it's not really conceivable that any skid can last with the way the pitching staff is built because 1-3 are solid and help is (hopefully) on the way. The guys discuss who in the BenchMob has earned a staring title even when the big names come back, which relievers and Triple-A players should be re-called to take over for Peterson and Luchessi and whether or not it's too premature to plan for October. Some might call it luck, we'd like to call it- well luck we guess so what? We can't help it if every team in the division gives up ground when we win. It's not every day the the pieces fall into place the way they have, but we gotta believe that when push comes to shove and we go head to head that we'll only further the distance on our way to the promise land and 96 wins!
