Jeff Blair and Kevin Barker share their reaction to the Blue Jays' roster moves including reinstating Alejandro Kirk, recalling Davis Schneider, Daulton Varsho placed on the IL and designating Tyler Henieman for assignment before bringing on the Jays' manager John Schneider (2:24). The skipper explains some of the moves, Shane Bieber's status, how he will balance the workload for Kirk and Brandon Valenzuela, if he would consider moving George Springer back to the outfield, Vlad Jr.'s struggles against the breaking ball, if he's had conversations with Max Scherzer about his future, and Trey Yesavage's second outing against the New York Yankees. Then, Jeff and Kevin chat about Bieber's recent rehab start and why fans should trust the management team to handle Scherzer's next steps. Buffalo Bisons manager Casey Candaele (2:27) joins Jeff Blair and Kevin Barker following some rehab starts from Dylan Cease, Max Scherzer and Shane Bieber. Later, Jeff and Kevin open the Back Leg Line to answer your calls and questions, including what to expect from Alejandro Kirk when he returns, and what the Jays should do with Scherzer. Justin and Patrick are back following a series win for the Toronto Blue Jays over the Baltimore Orioles. Ernie Clement and Brandon Valenzuela came up big with the bats, and Louis Varland picked up two more saves. The guys dicuss the current lineup construction, bullpen roster spots, and what the team will do when they activate Cease and Scherzer. With the Phillies coming to town for three games, the Blue Jays will see one of the best pitching staffs in the league and will face Christopher Sanchez in Monday's series opener.
The Blue Jays seem to be pointed in the right direction lately. They haven't lost a series to a team other than the Rays since they left Arizona back on April 19th. They seem to have escaped a nightmare injury scenario after Dylan Cease and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. both exited their finale against the Pirates back on Sunday. George Springer might be starting to figure it out. Jesús Sánchez is off of Bumwatch (TM) (OR IS HE?). Louis Varland is a demon. And reinforcements—Kirk, Barger, Bieber, Scherzer(?)—are on the way.But at the fringes of the roster things are fluid. Davis Schneider is gone, Nathan Lukes is back, Brandon Valenzuela is legit, Charles McAdoo is on his way in, and there's been much churn in the bullpen—as there will continue to be as the team tries to figure out a way to cover for the (hopefully brief) loss of Cease as they push through their current stretch of 17 games in 17 days. And that's where our focus mostly lies this week, as we talk about all of it! Plus, a check in on Sánchez, a look at how Daulton Varsho suddenly has become a more complete hitter (albeit worse than last year), and a whole lot more! Hosted on Acast. They take your calls and texts, and get right to six innings of one-run ball from Max Scherzer - how needed is this with the rotation depth getting tested early in the season? We recorded this one before news broke that José Berríos will be seeing Dr. Keith Meister—the Keith-meister!—for a second opinion on his inflammed right elbow, but I don't think that changes a whole lot about the episode, or our concerns over the Jays' slow-building pitching depth. So have a listen as we discuss Berríos's flagged MRI, Trey Yesavage's deliberate ramp-up, the progression of Shane Bieber and Yimi García, Scherzer the potential saviour—and the dangers of believing in anyone's age-41 season—plus Vladdy continuing his October momentum at the WBC, an odd IKF-related announcement from MLB, and a whole lot more!** FOR AN AD-FREE VERSION OF THIS—AND EVERY—EPISODE, PLUS WEEKLY BONUS SHOWS, FIND US AT patreon.com/BJHH ** Hosted on Acast. Future Hall of Fame pitcher Max Scherzer joins Nick Alberga & Jay Rosehill for a wide-ranging conversation on his return to the Toronto Blue Jays and the mentality that's made him one of the fiercest competitors in professional sports.Scherzer discusses whether it was always Toronto in free agency, revealing that several teams were interested before ultimately deciding to return. He also shares a great family story about his daughter writing a letter to Santa asking for her dad to come back to the Blue Jays. From there, Max reflects on the club's heartbreaking Game 7 loss in the World Series and why he believes there's still unfinished business in Toronto. The conversation also touches on Scherzer's spring debut, where he's at physically, and the plan moving forward as he prepares for another season. Known for his legendary intensity, Scherzer dives into what accountability and leadership mean to him—something that naturally leads to a discussion about the pressure that comes with playing in Toronto, especially for teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs. With Toronto's leaders taking plenty of heat this season, Scherzer explains how great competitors stay confident, motivated, and hungry when their team is struggling. The guys also compare Scherzer's relentless edge to longtime NHL agitator Corey Perry, and Max talks about the pride he takes in still competing like a bulldog at 41.Plus, Scherzer reflects on what ultimately clicked inside the Blue Jays clubhouse last season after a slow start, the importance of culture for teams expected to win, and why he'd love to get out to a Leafs game in April to see Alex Ovechkin play in Toronto—potentially for the final time.#LeafsForever #LeafsMorningTake

Guests: Blue Jays outfielder Myles Straw, shortstop Andres Gimenez, infielder Leo Jimenez, outfielder Eloy Jimenez Deep Left Field returns to Dunedin, Florida for Blue Jays spring training and this week we present a confluence of *imenezes, each of whom has been making news in the early days of camp, but first, a chat with Myles Straw about the Jays repatriation of Max Scherzer, who agreed to a one-year deal early Thursday morning. Andres Gimenez will be the Jays' starting shortstop this season. It's a move back to his original position, and one he played very well in the absence of Bo Bichette down the stretch and into the playoffs. Gimenez talks to us about shifting back to the other side of second base and what he needs to do to improve his offence. Leo Jimenez is out of options, and in a make-or-break position to break camp as the back-up infielder or be put through waivers after a lost 2025 because of illness and injury. We catch up with the youngster, who was solid for the Jays in 2024, to talk about how he's dealing with the pressure. And we play "meet the new guy" with Eloy Jimenez, a one-time top prospect who exploded onto the big-league scene with 47 home runs over his first 173 career games before running into the injury bug - hard - for five years. Here on a minor-league contract, he's off to a sensational start to the spring. All this plus the mailbag at deepleftfield@thestar.ca!

The week in sports kicked off with chaos and drama across the NFL and MLB. The Bengals stunned the Steelers on a last-second FG, with Flacco and Rodgers lighting it up, though Rodgers lost it when an offensive lineman tackled him mid-celebration. Gio slammed the league's weak defenses, warning anyone can beat anyone, while the Broncos struggled returning from London. MLB action saw the Blue Jays even their series 2-2 with a Vlad homer, the Dodgers keep winning without Ohtani, and Scherzer refusing to leave the mound as the Brewers fall 3-0. Off the field, Cashman fired back at Jeter and A-Rod's digs at the Yankees, the Mets debate Pete Alonso's future. Jets face pressure this week with Justin Fields needing to deliver against the Panthers, and NFL QBs once again flop in New York only to shine elsewhere, much to Boomer's amusement that the Giants gave Dart time to watch before playing. The week closed with explosive leaked audio of Belichick getting micromanaged by Jordon Hudson and trashing the crew, Al & Eddie dropping a new Cam Skattebo song, and our revamped Week 7 NFL picks ready to shake things up.

Munaf Manji and Griffin Warner talk MLB betting for Tuesday. Munaf Manji (0:09–0:58) opens with excitement, noting most teams are 124–126 games deep and division races heating up. He promises best bets and promotions before introducing Griffin Warner. Griffin (0:59–1:13) admits they went 0–2 last episode but were 6–2 in the last eight and ready to build a new streak. Munaf (1:14–2:30) previews Brewers at Cubs, a doubleheader shifted by rain: Boyd vs Patrick, Cubs –130, Brewers +118, total 7.5. Griffin (2:31–3:03) jokes about losing his internet before asking about standings. Munaf (3:04–3:12) says Brewers lead Cubs by eight. Griffin (3:12–5:13) calls Milwaukee's 31 wins in 38 “incredible” while Cubs are under .500 since midseason and mentally damaged. Munaf (5:14–6:52) adds Brewers are 23–5 since the break, Cubs 13–15, their bats flat with Crow-Armstrong and Tucker slumping. Boyd has pitched well but Cubs have lost four straight of his starts due to no run support. He sticks with Milwaukee. Munaf (7:13–7:56) shifts to Cardinals at Marlins, McGreevy vs Cabrera, Miami –132. Griffin (7:58–9:27) says St. Louis sold at the deadline, bullpen shaky, GM retiring, so it's Marlins or nothing. Munaf (9:28–11:13) praises Cabrera's 2.86 ERA at home across 63 innings and sides Miami. Astros at Tigers (11:14–15:33) brings Hunter Brown at +149 against Skubal –165. Griffin calls that price shocking, noting Skubal has allowed three runs in three straight. Munaf confirms it's the first time Brown has been above +140, citing his 3–0 record with 2.93 ERA vs Detroit. They agree Astros ML and under seven. Blue Jays at Pirates (15:46–19:45): Griffin says Keller is untrustworthy while Scherzer has adjusted. Munaf notes Keller's struggles but Scherzer's strong three-game run and backs Jays on the run line. Mets at Nationals (19:47–22:23): Griffin leans over nine, citing poor bullpens. Munaf recalls Peterson's complete game shutout vs Washington and his 2.43 ERA against them since 2023, while Irvin has allowed 14 runs in three August starts, backing Mets. Mariners at Phillies (22:24–25:34): Griffin doubts Miller's return, Munaf stresses Sanchez's 9–1 home record, both back Philadelphia. Orioles at Red Sox (25:35–28:53): Griffin finds Buehler unreliable, Munaf says he struggles to string good starts, both lean over 9.5. White Sox at Braves (28:54–32:06): little faith in either side, White Sox bullpen dismissed. Yankees at Rays (33:11–37:46): Griffin praises Boz but doubts Yankees' management; Munaf notes Rodon's 3.25 ERA, New York's seven wins in ten, and Rays' cooling bats, siding Yankees –140. Rangers at Royals (37:48–43:38): Lugo has allowed 13 runs in two starts, Griffin leans Rangers with Kelly, Munaf agrees. Athletics at Twins (43:39–47:04): Lopez hasn't allowed an earned run in 24 innings, Ryan is 12–5 with 2.72 ERA, both lean under but wary of regression. Brewers at Cubs Game 2 (47:06–51:15): Woodruff vs Taillon, Griffin surprised Brewers favored on road but won't fade them, Munaf notes they've won every Woodruff start. Dodgers at Rockies (51:17–53:15): Sheehan vs Gomber, both expect runs at Coors, backing the over. Reds at Angels (53:16–55:49): Griffin tired of Hendricks, Munaf impressed by Greene's six shutout innings vs Phillies, siding Reds. Giants at Padres (55:51–58:50): Tang gave up six runs in his last outing, Pavetta 12–4 with a 2.7 ERA, Munaf backs Padres team total. Guardians at Diamondbacks (58:58–1:03:18): Griffin distrusts Rodriguez but sees Arizona's bats dangerous; Munaf notes E-Rod's poor 5.73 ERA at home, both lean over. Best bets (1:03:44–1:07:35): Griffin locks Astros–Tigers under seven, saying two aces and shaky offenses make it valuable. Munaf selects Yankees ML with Rodon, trusting their form and urgency. They close (1:07:35–1:09:14) with promos and optimism, determined to keep putting money in listeners' pockets as the postseason nears. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
