This weeks podcast critically reviews the wording of possible amendments to the Constitution to enable expropriation without compensation. We report on a story from the University of Cape Town which has been involved in a process to restore the skeletons of former farmworkers which were unlawfully exhumed in the 1920s. We examine the social impacts associated with the loss of access to ancestral graves associated with forced removals and mining. We review opinion pieces analysing government support for traditional leadership and the Traditional Courts Bill currently being fast tracked through the National Council of Provinces and the ways in which this fundamentally undermines the rights of 18 million rural citizen.s We provide different perspectives on some of the challenges being experienced in the land restitution programme highlighting the strange and complex case of the Vhembe communal Property Association as well as the limited benefits accruing to communities who made restitution claims on land which had been converted to the growing of sugarcane. There are also segments on rural development and urban land issues.
